THE VITAL PRE-LAMBING PERIOD

Enhance lamb survival with your pre-lambing efforts

By looking after your ewes at pre-lambing, you’ve set a solid platform.

Then get your lambs thriving

Protect and build on this foundation with a comprehensive lamb health program

As the number and quality of lambs determines your profitability, it’s important to get lamb health right.

THREE KEY STEPS:

1. Plan Ahead and prevent unexpected deaths and production loss by having ewes:

• Lambing on the right feed levels

• In the right body condition

• Treated with the right animal health products.

2. Follow the vaccination program to ensure complete protection, lambs need:

• 1st ‘priming’ vaccine dose at marking

• 2nd ‘booster’ dose at weaning

• Annual booster (preferably at pre-lambing for ewes).

3. Select the right drench for the right class of stock:

• Minimise the impact of worms on those that need it most

• Minimise the development of resistance by not treating everything

• Reduce the overall cost of your drenching program.

FOR SUCCESSFUL LAMBING...

NUTRITION • Ensure adequate quality and quantity of nutrition

(minimum 1200kgDM/Ha)

BODY CONDITION SCOREEwes with better BCS (≥3) in late pregnancy have better:

• Lamb survival

• Colostrum and milk production

• Lamb growth rates and weaning weights

• Ewe weaning weights.

DISEASE PREVENTIONRoutinely vaccinate ewes pre-lamb to:

• Prevent death of ewes at lambing due to Clostridial disease

• Protect lambs for their first 6 to 8 weeks of life.

PARASITE MANAGEMENTTreating ewes for parasites based on feed cover, BCS and number of lambs scanned will:

• Maximise ewe BCS, weight and milk production

• Maximise lamb growth rate

• Minimise dags

• Minimise pasture contamination.

Sort your pre-lambing strategy with a Pre-Lamb Plan.

CHAPTER 1. CONQUER PARASITES AND DISEASE

THE BENEFITS OF A COMPLETE PRE-LAMB PLAN• On-going protection for your ewes against dangerous infectious Clostridial diseases

• Protects lambs against diseases via the ewe’s colostrum

• Controls worm in pre-lambing ewes when they’re highly vulnerable

• Lowers pasture contamination from worm larvae, so ewes raise lambs on lower risk paddocks*

• Optimised ewe health

• Improved lamb growth, survival and sustainable flock performance

• Increased productivity and profitability.

*Use drenching alongside non-chemical measures to reduce worm risk in lambing paddocks.

Fight parasites and worms: arm yourself with the right information and tools.

CHAPTER 2. DON’T GO IN UNARMED

WHICH DRENCH?Is your pre-lambing treatment hard to swallow? Use Cydectin® Long Acting with either Ultravac® 5 in 1 or Lifeguard® for protection against Clostridial disease. It is easy to administer, and provides extended protection against the parasites that are important in the pre-lambing and early lambing period. Cydectin Long Acting Injection delivers equivalent production gains to capsules.

CYDECTIN LONG ACTING INJECTION FOR SHEEPProvides persistent activity for improved worm control with Moxidectin, the most potent ML.

• No other product offers longer protection against Teladorsagia (Ostertagia circumcincta)

• NZ trial work demonstrated that treated ewes were 3.2kg heavier and produced lambs that were 2.6kg heavier at weaning

• Easier to administer and delivers the same production benefits as capsules

• Use with either Ultravac 5 in 1 or Lifeguard for protection against Clostridial disease.

CYDECTIN INJECTION FOR SHEEP AND CATTLEEngage ‘best practice’ FEC and BSC monitoring. If ewes are healthy and larval contamination is low, drench accordingly.

• Contains Moxidectin, the most potent ML

• An easy to use injection with a wide safety margin

• Prevents reinfection from Teladorsagia for 35 days

• Can be given at the same time as Lifeguard or Ultravac 5 in 1.

EWEGUARD®

Get around labour and time constraints – choose the convenient Eweguard 2 in 1 (Clostridial and Cheesy Gland protection and moxi drench treatment) for proven performance in one shot.

• Shown to increase ewe and lamb weaning weights in NZ field trials

• 6 in 1 vaccine protection (5 Clostridials + Cheesy Gland)

• Also available as Eweguard Plus Selenium

• Convenience of 2 jobs in 1 shot.

Optimise the health of pre-lambing ewes and set your lambs up for success early.

CHAPTER 3. THE STRATEGY FOR SUCCESS

WHICH VACCINE? Protect your ewes and your lambs will benefit too.

LIFEGUARD 5 IN 1 OR ULTRAVAC 5 IN 15 in 1 vaccines provide protection against the 5 main clostridial diseases. Lambs receive protective antibodies through a ewe’s colostrum, giving protection for the first 6-8 weeks of life.

• Can use in lambs from tailing

• Use up to 30 days after opening.

LIFEGUARD 5 IN 1 WITH SELENIUM OR ULTRAVAC 5 IN 1 WITH SELENIUMAdditional to the above benefits, 5 in 1 vaccines with Selenium prevents selenium deficiency in adult sheep.

Combine vaccination with a targeted drenching plan for your complete pre-lamb health package. For use in adult sheep only.
