Company: DAIMLER Student: Abhishek Ranjan

Daimler visited the very first day (interview was organized on second day)

Profile Offered: Research Profile on software like Abacus, Fluent, etc.

Company Profile: Daimler is a German company and leading manufacturer in automobile. It is world’s

one of the biggest manufacturer of truck. They are setting up their plant in Chennai and they wanted

people who can assist them in improving their design and technology according to Indian Roads and

environment.

Open for Programme: MTech and Dual Degree: ME, AE too.

Shortlisting: Resume and Projects (Solid Mechanics)

Actually they were looking for experienced guys, who already have a job experience of a year or two.

Though they asked for a written test initially but later on, them shortlisted the candidates based on.

They were keen to take students who had some kind of job experience (for MTech guys) or internship.

Interview Round:

No of Students: 15 Duration: 10-15 minutes

Panel: 2 (HR and Technical Head)

Questions:

Tell me about yourself.

My Answer: First introduced myself, my family background, my hobbies and my qualities my

hobbies E.g. I told them that I like to travel a lot and gave an example as when I was in Europe I travelled

some 6-7 countries even I had to spend my own money. Since they were first time in the campus so they

didn’t know about foreign internships. They were fascinated by the fact that I have international

exposure. They asked about my purpose of being in Europe. I told them about internship, they liked it

and asked questions related to that as of who paid for you and the university.

Thesis: Technical questions

They wanted to know how my work and thesis could be of their use. It was related to polymer and I told

them it will be of help in seat chamber design. You should be able to convince them that whatever you

are doing is of use to them. I was working in Abacus. They were impressed with this and asked if I am

asked to work on Ansys, Fluent, will I be able to do so. I gave them a positive reply.

Projects: They were highly impressed with one of my projects on “Adamas” which I did in my 2nd year.

This was the thing which they were looking for. They asked some technical questions as how did you

simulate the track and where did you apply force. I answered their questions with confidence and they

were impressed. You may like to give priorities to your projects based on company profile and

Page 29: The Placement Mantra...3) Why curing? 4) Name failure when building is blasted 5) Diff between concrete in a building and dam 6) Diff between bitumen for roads and for airstrips 7)

23

requirement. So by this time they were very impressed by me and I was kind of getting the feeling that

they will hire me.

HR: my strength and weaknesses

Another important point, it helps if you asked some questions to them during presentation or interview,

they value and remember it. I asked a question during presentation and about the job location during

interview. When I asked them this question in interview then they told me that you were the guy who

asked one question during presentation.

Finally they asked me if I would be comfortable in Chennai. I replied them positively and by this time.

Suggestions and guidelines:

Courses like ME 401, ESO202, ME 301, MOS, ME 361, and ME 461 are very important and revise their

notes.

If you are preparing for NTPC or any company for power plant, do read starting 4 chapters of “Power

plant Engineering” by P.K. Nag.

Organize mock GD’s in wings.

Prepare some common HR questions like “Tell me about yourself”, strengths and weakness, your

hobbies etc. - prepare this question in written

Do ask questions to them during interview or presentation in a different fashion, may be related to your

job profile or anything which is bothering you.

Works on Wi-Fi and Wi-Max Technology, It’s a great company for those who aim for research oriented

job in wireless communication.

Process of company

(1) Aptitude Test:

Duration of Test: 1hr Number of Questions: 30

There were some basic questions on probability theory, digital communication (mainly wireless

communication, like problem on GSM, CDMA, and OFDM). Some questions were from DSP (like DFT

etc.). Basics of information theory (EE 624) should be clear; there were some questions on calculating

capacity of a Gaussian channel, differential entropy etc. A single problem from C programming was

there and it was very simple.

Two sections 1) VLSI

2) Communications

For VLSI stream we had to solve only the first section

Type of questions and details

Questions were a mix of digital and analog

Most of the questions were on digital logic design

1) Given a current mirror circuit we had to identify and calculate what is the current through one

MOS Transistor

2) Question on timing analysis-setup time, hold time ----this very important---you have to be very

clear in this concept. Frequently asked.

3) Question on Op Amp. It was an integrator …had to calculate output voltage.

4) Many questions were on logic design.

5) Questions on devices like if doping increased, how would the other parameters vary..?

Page 31: The Placement Mantra...3) Why curing? 4) Name failure when building is blasted 5) Diff between concrete in a building and dam 6) Diff between bitumen for roads and for airstrips 7)

25

(2) Group Discussion:::::::No group discussion

(3) Interview Round 1 It was a telephonic interview

Type of Round: Technical + HR Duration: 1hr

(related to wireless communication). I was also asked about viterbi decoders, OFDM and MIMO (my

thesis was on MIMO).

View 2: Questions were mostly on timing analysis

What would you do to remove Setup violation, hold violation?

Timing analysis

Asked about my digital project in very detail

Courses I have done here …and their relevancy to the company

General Suggestions

Be well prepared with both digital and analog…Read chapter 10 of Rabaey completely. You must know

Verilog

One should try to keep himself focused during the whole time of written test and interview. Basics of

probability theory and communication theory should be very clear.

Come up with a proper point

They prefer quality of your solutions

There is no right or wrong answer in GD. Main point is that how you are supporting your points

If you are able to put useful data or statistics to prove your point in GD then it is highly

recommended

During GD of ITC, we did not need to match our rating with group rating which was a

misunderstanding. We need to defend our points

(3) Interview Round 1
