Building Awareness for Alzheimer’s and
Recognizing Family Caregivers this
November
A growing epidemic in the United States and the
world, Alzheimer’s disease affects one in three seniors
over the age of 65. In 1983 Ronald Reagan designated
November as National Alzheimer’s Disease Awareness
Month. In the past 32 years the numbers of those diag-
nosed with Alzheimer’s disease has increased by over
three million Americans. The drive to increase aware-
ness includes work to help fund research into the dis-
ease, possible treatments, and care.
Alzheimer’s disease was discovered in 1906 af-
ter Dr. Alois Alzheimer noticed changes in brain tissue
of a woman who had died of what was then diagnosed
as an unusual mental illness. Here we are nearly 110
years later and Alzheimer’s disease is the sixth leading
cause of death in the United States and still does not
have a cure. Though a larger problem than ever before,
we do know a lot more about Alzheimer’s than we did
one hundred years ago, partially due to the increased of
awareness of the disease.
The impact on those who experience the symp-
toms of memory loss and Alzheimer’s disease is great
and includes frustrating situations for the diagnosed.
The impact does not end at those who have been diag-
nosed however, but includes family and loved ones who
often take over as caregiver. Over the past year the Alz-
heimer’s Association estimates that nearly 17.9 billion
hours of unpaid care were provided by friends and fam-
ily of people with Alzheimer’s and other dementias.
Rightfully so, National Alzheimer’s Disease
Awareness Month coincides with National Family
Caregiver’s Month which is a time to recognize the role
of family members and loved ones who take on the re-
sponsibilities of caregiver.
At Pioneer Village we work hard throughout the
year to support the drive of awareness and fundraising
to help those in our lives affected by Alzheimer’s dis-
ease. We are proud to say that as a community we’ve
participated in the Alzheimer’s Walk and raised $1,900
throughout the year to be donated to the Alzheimer’s
Association.-and Southern Oregon as a whole raised
$67,000!!!!!
Throughout the month we’ll be sharing opportu-
nities to learn more about Alzheimer’s disease, demen-
tia and caregiving with community events, on our com-
munity Facebook page, and the Radiant Senior Living
blog. Visit our blog at: blog.radiantseniorliving.com.

Alzheimer’s disease:
Quick Facts about Alzheimer’s from Alz.org:
It is the only cause of death in the top ten in
America that cannot be prevented, cured
or slowed.
Only 45% of people with Alzheimer’s or
their caregivers report being told of their
diagnosis.
Almost two thirds of Americans with Alz-
heimer’s disease are women.
Every 67 seconds someone in the United
States develops the disease.
An estimated 5.3 million Americans of all
ages have Alzheimer’s disease in 2015.
In 2014, friends and family of people with
Alzheimer’s and other dementias pro-
vided an estimated 17.9 billion hours of
unpaid care.
