In the year "And the work of righteousness shall be"15 peace and the effect of righteousness, quietness and confidence forever.

A word of truth will stand firm forever and ever. She stretched out her hand to give charity to assist her husband also on

a bitter day. The utterance of her lips has she guarded to give the amount of fifty

dollars to the Chevra Mishnayes for the soul of her husband of blessed memory.

This monument and record is a witness that the woman Sima Bader, the daughter of the Rabbi Reb Moshe donated

With a willing spirit the fifty dollars on behalf of her husband's soul Mordecai Bereb Gev Bader.

For such a woman it is proper that her deed be inscribed and written in the book as a remembrance.

Let the following generation see her deeds and let the daughters praise her and extol her.

The congregation of the local Chevra Mishnayes will write this into the record with many thanks and blessings.

Many daughters have done virtuously, but thou excellest them all.

Have all of us,18 the Chevra Mishnaves of the Beth David Schul decided, and the Gabbai and the Secretary and also other members of the Chevra have signed that Reb Abraham Mordecai bereb Simcha Weinstein, a member of the Chevra, is giving ten dollars in cash for charity into the treasury of the Chevra. Then after a hundred years the Chevra is obli-gated according to lot, to recite Kaddish the whole year for his soul and always observe the Yahrzeit according to the rules written clearly in the record book. And we have received the ten dollars in full from his hand on the first day of the Sidra Shmos in the year 1919 (5679).1 ! )

She extended her hand to give charity to the Chevra Mishnaves. Lo, she is the pious woman Madame Zevia Blettel. In a spirit of good will, she directed twenty dollars to be given to the

Chevra for charity. For all generations will her soul be remembered for good and for a

blessing. The congregation of the Chevra Mishnayes here will write this in the

record book. The goodness of her deeds in life will bind her soul in a bond of life. May her soul rest in the Garden of Eden and the Master of all be her

inheritance. For good will her name be remembered among the congregation of the

We, the Chevra Mishnayes, have gathered together to plan and discuss concerning the Sefer Torah which the heart of the generous Reb Joseph bereb Isaiah Gershman has been willing enough to give the holy Sefer Torah to the Beth David Synagogue to the Chevra Mishnayes as an eternal contribution and even after a hundred years no fully empow-ered representative of his may be permitted to dispute this, for it is an eternal contribution.

And this is the record which our Chevra, the Chevra Mishnah, must give to the above Reb Joseph Gershman.

A ) We are required to read in the above Sefer Torah the entire first year from the day of the Sivyium and beginning which was on the First day of Parshas Re the year 1923 (5683) . 2 1

B) For the opening of the Ark for Kol Nidrei, the hand of the above Reb Joseph shall be first in the above Mitzvah.

C ) On Shcmini Atzereth and Simchas Torah it is his privilege to go the first Hakafu with the above Sefer Torah.

D) On Simchas Torah he may call his entire family to read in his Sefer Torah on the condition that he gives three dollars to the Schul and the donations belong to the above Schul.

E) Each and every year on Parshas Naso the members of the Chevra Mishna are required to read from the above Sefer Torah.

F ) After the hundred years of the above Reb Joseph or of his spouse the modest matron Beila, the daughter of Reb x\aron, the members are required to read in the above Sefer Torah on the Sabbath pre-ceding the Yahrzeit.

G) After a hundred years when the generous Reb Joseph Gershman or his spouse Beila, the daughter of Reb Aaron, shall have died we, the Chevra Mishnah, are obligated to read in his Sefer Torah every Sabbath of the blessing of the New Moon in that year for the entire year.

1. The tradit ional manner of mentioning a passage of scripture to i l lustrate a certain date is made use of in this record book. This passage is from Psalms I, 2. The date 5667 in the context here corresponds to 1906 and not to 1907 since we find on the next page that it is the ear ly part of the year 5667 which would correspond to the fal l of 1906.

2. When writ ing a date according to the Jewish or Hebrew ca lendar the date of the month was and is not a lways mentioned. Instead the day of the week and the title of the part icular Torah portion of the week, which is to be read the following Sabbath, are mentioned. In this part icular case a verse from the reading was mentioned instead of the title. The Sidra 's t it le is Lech Lecho and the passage is from Genesis XI I , 13.

3. Proverbs X I V , 28. This expression is used id iomat ica l ly chiefly in Rabbin ica l l i terature to describe the virtue of having a crowd at the performance of a mitzvah or rel igious ceremony.

4. Numbers X V I , 29. 5. The Sabbath following the festival of Shevuoth. 6. Meaning completion and used here to denote the completion of an order of

Mishnayes when it is customary to hold a party or celebration. 7. The rules on this page are written in Yiddish with a slight mixture of Hebrew

phrases. 8. The abbreviation is not c lear and it is the translator's guess that it refers to

Adar—The name of a Jewish month, sixth in order of sequence from the Jewish New Year .

After a hundred years—A euphemistic expression denoting a person's l ife span with the real ization that death must eventual ly c la im everyone.

Ain Yaacov—The entire collection of all of the homilet ical , exegetical , and l i terary parts of the Babylonian T a l m u d with certain selections from the Je rusa l em T a l m u d . This was done by Rabbi Jacob Ben Chabib in the early part of the 16th century. Because of its popular nature it has been and still is studied by groups of Jews organized for this purpose.

Anshei—Lit. "men of."

Beis—Lit. "house of . . ."

Bereb—Lit. "The son of Reb (so and so) . " This is an abbreviated form of the two words "ben"—son and "Reb"—rabb i or teacher.

Chevra—From Hebrew word "chaver" meaning friend or brother in the trans-ferred sense. Therefore, Chevra would mean a brotherhood.

Gabbai (pi . Gabbo im)—The word Gabbai coming from the Aramaic Gavo—to collect, original ly meant a collector or an appointee of the community to gather charity or food. It is now commonly used to denote the two appointees of a congregation who have the privilege of standing at the desk where the Torah is read and choosing those who arc to be cal led to the reading of the Torah .

Hakafa—Lit. "a circle." It is here used to describe the ceremony of Hakafoth or parad ing with the Scrolls of the Torah within the Synagogue on S imchas Torah.

Hamidrash—Lit. "of exposit ion." The word is used here to denote the Beis Harnidrash or House of Study where the Torah is expounded and studied. In ear l ier times the Beis Hamidrash wras distinguished from the Synagogue or Beis Hacnesseth since it was used for both study and worship whereas the latter was used only for worship.

Kaddish—Lit. "sanct if icat ion." The mourners' prayer recited by a son for eleven months following the demise of either father or mother. This is the meaning here and is not to be confused with the Kaddish prayer which is part of every service in the synagogue.

Kesher Israel—Lit. "The Bond of Israel ."

Kol Nidrei—Lit. "All Vows." The very famous l i turgical prayer and melody which begins the services on the Holiest Day of the Jewish ca lendar , Yom Kippur , or Day of Atonement. It is chanted on Yom Kippur Eve.

Minyan—Lit. "number ." Here referring to the quorum of ten males which is necessary to conduct group or community worship.

Mishnayes—Refers to the six orders of Jewish Oral Law redacted by Rabbi J u d a h the Prince about 175 C.E. It is the basis for both the Babylonian and Jeru-sa lem T a l m u d i m and all discussion in the T a l m u d originates from this ear l ier codification.

Mitzvah—Lit. "commandment . " It is used col loquial ly to designate the perform-ance of a worthy and meritorious action.

Moreinu—Lit. "our teacher ." However this term was used, especial ly among Chasidic Jews, to designate any responsible or worthy individual a l though he may not have been a scholar.

Naso—Lit. " l i f t up." The tit le of the portion of the Torah read after Pentecost or Shevuoth.

Parshas—Lit. "chapter of." The word Parshah designates the portion of the week to be read from the Torah. It also may be used in referring to specific sections of the Biblical text.

Reb—Reduced from word "rebi" or rabbi—teacher. Comes from word " r av" meaning large, great or much. Therefore, used to designate someone who was a superior or master. In eastern Europe after a young man marr ied he was accorded the tit le of Reb showing that he had passed beyond the stage of being a "buchur" or bachelor.

Rosh Chodesh—The first day of a Jewish month. In the synagogue special prayers arc recited commemorat ing the beginning of the month.

Sefer—Lit. "book." Here used to designate the Scroll of the Law.

Sfard—Lit. "Spa in . " Here it refers to the l i turgical variat ion cal led "Nusach S f a rd" which has its origin in Spain. This synagogue worshipped according to the Sefardic var iat ion as opposed to "Nusach Ashkenaz" or the German variation.

Shas—An abbreviation of the two words "Shisha Sidre"—or six Orders of the Mishnayes and Ta lmud . It refers to the Ta lmud in its entirety when used in conversation.

Shemini Atzereth—The Eighth Day of Assembly. This is the hol iday immedia te ly following the seventh day of Sukkos or Feast of Booths.

Shevat—The name of a month in the Jewish calendar , fifth in the order of sequence from the Jewish New Year .

Shiva—Lit. "seven." Refers here to the seven day period of mourning observed after a demise in a fami ly .

Shul—A German word l i teral ly meaning school. Since the Jewish house of worship was completely integrated later with the house of study this word is used to designate a synagogue.

Sidra—Comes from word "seder" or order. Denotes portion of Pentateuch read each Sabbath of the year .

Simchas Torah—"Rejoicing of the L a w . " The festival the day af ter Shemini Atzereth. On this day the Pentateuch is concluded and then begun from Genesis. Every male in the synagogue is cal led to the Torah .

Siyyium—Lit. "conclusion." When an order of Mishnayes or tractate of the Ta l -mud is completed a party ca l led a S i yy ium celebrates this event.

Torah—Refers to the Pentateuch specifical ly and used also as a general word for the entirety of Jewish law and tradit ion.

Yahrzeit—From German meaning lit. " a year 's t ime." This term refers to the annual commemorat ion of a loved one's demise. Candles are lit and the kaddish is recited.
