Community Services and Drop In and Sew

The times they are a changing and so is Community Service. At the May Guild meeting I gave you a “heads up” on the changes. Here they are in more detail.

Your response to “Kathy’s Kits” has been wonderful and overwhelming. So much so that Community Services has 100+, yes 100+, quilt tops in need of quilting. We do not have enough space to store these because more come in every month and some of our loyal volunteers are not available. Therefore . . . beginning in June, all kits that are checked out will include batt,

back, and binding. Kits must be returned as a completed quilt. What does this mean? It means that you, or someone you know (friend? mini group?, or guild member?), will work with you to quilt and bind the quilt.

People who will bind: Mary Serpa, Joyce Yaksick, Jeanne Rupp Quilters: if you will help quilt, please let me know and I will share your name.

Seventeen – 17 – quilts need binding at this time. Call me if you are interested in helping with this project.

THE GOOD NEWS . . . CS has several events for you to learn simple quilting techniques. Space is limited for these events so sign up by calling me or at the June meeting . . .

25 July – QUILTAPALOOZA at Sugar Pine Quilt Shop, Noon to 9:00 p.m. This all day event allows you to select the hours you want to sew. Quilt tops, batt and backs will be provided. Munchies, chocolate, and drinks also provided. PRIZES throughout the day. Potluck or contribute to Miner Moe’s Pizza.

19 September – Ina Gibson returns with “Envelope Quilting”, an easy, breezy way to complete a quilt. Practice on a CS quilt and gain ideas for you to use on your own quilt.

19 November – Lorna Straka: Easy Binding 2015 Community Service Dates September 17 October 15 November 19 December Distribution on Wednesday, 2nd

REMEMBER, there is NO CS in June, July, August, or December

Thank you, Marjorie McConnell CS and DIS meet at the Seventh Day Adventist Church, Osborne Hill Road, Grass Valley. There are a variety of projects to

help with, support available, homemade treats to keep you fortified – do bring a lunch if you stay for the day. Want to

help but cannot attend CS Thursday or a Guild meeting? I can deliver a kit to you to work on at home – call or email me.

Thank you, Marjorie

A big thank you goes out to all members, husbands, and friends of the Guild who have given so generously of their time, energy and skills to put on our wonderful 2015 quilt show.  Our enthusiastic members made and donated items and baskets to our Raffle Baskets and Silent Auction, the delicious desserts in the lunchroom, and used their physical skills to move, set up, take down all the equipment, and even do the clean up!  Local DeMolay teens brought their energy to keep everything clean, and help with take down. Our wonderful vendors donated door prizes for the lucky winners.

We had fun with the Quilt Show and are looking forward to helping next year’s

Chairperson, Marjorie McConnell.  Save the date – April 30 – May 1, 2016!

Someone purchased a 102” x 102” pieced maple leaf quilt top at the country store.  Unfortunately, I did not include the unbleached muslin that was supposed to be used for the

backing.  If someone reading the newsletter bought this, contact me.  Cora Hughes

Cora Hughes Patchwork Star June 2015

All the way to South Lake Tahoe, Cora's and Dave's blissful retreat owns a panoramic view of pristine forest, their passport to nirvana. Built in 1980, their sprawling home has a sizable attached granny unit, now occupied by Cora's quilting studio. Each wall displays a bountiful supply of original paintings by Dave's famous father, the late Alan Hughes from Long Island, New York. Ambitious pen and ink renderings of ships and factories as well as oil portraits and modern abstracts were a delight to behold. Too, Cora's wall quilts were artfully interspersed, giving their home an exhaustive cornucopia of carefully curated objets d' art.

Mild mannered Cora is not a bit player in the realm of quilting, exclaiming: “ I made 30 quilts last year!” Although she gleans inspiration from magazines and others' patterns, she never follows them. Cora likes to “quilt outside the bee”. Shrugging good-naturedly, she claimed: “I do my own thing. I don't follow patterns.” Adding: “ I can't stand to leave a mistake. I'm a stickler for matching my points, even if I have to rip it out 6 times!” With the precision of a Swiss watch, Cora's points are impeccable.

Cora is worried, however, about utilizing her enormous stash before she dies. So many of us can relate to this, amen? Candidly admitting, “my mother never met a fabric store she didn't love”, Cora herself has had to put on the brakes a little. Exhaustive flowered Kaffes, cerise flavored dots, flaming gold go-withs and tantalizing sapphires were stacked neatly and beckoningly in an open cabinet. Lonni Rossi prints peeked out at me, light and dark rusts imprinted with this maxim: “Chrysanthemums are the Symbol of Long Life and Harmony”. How can you not be just itching to use this as as your next winning quilt theme?

A floor-to-ceiling design wall 12 feet wide is always available for Cora's 5 grandchildren, ranging from ages 4-12, to accomplish their weekly planning strategies. Four machines: 2 Berninas, a Janome and a Brother sit handily in a super large studio. Admittedly, Cora demurred, “I just can't give stuff away!” Perhaps we could help Cora out with a private mini-group stash sale?? It's all here—Cora has no favorite color.

Cora's forte is in hand quilting. Traditional bed quilts average an even 12 stitches to the inch. She comfortably uses a large lap frame, expediently and accurately. Themes vary, but as she candidly remarked: “ I never passed a sunflower I didn't like.” When not quilting her own, Karla and John Rogers come to the rescue. The guest bed was covered with 16 quilts! Of course, kids and grandkids have already received their share.

Having traveled to Japan, Cora and Dave have acquired Japanese dolls, art pieces, fabrics and techniques. If all began with their hosting a Japanese exchange student. Unbelievable cathedral window-ish table runners blew me away! You gotta see it to believe it!

Cora is very focused. When she sets her mind to do a quilt or other project, she is tenacious. A passionate newer interest has her focused on helping her daughter, Lisa, to develop and sell life-like therapeutic baby dolls. They can be beneficial for Alzheimer patients, reducing a patient's use of medications from as much as 92% to 28%. Each hand made baby doll is one-of-a-kind and totally real looking. Cora can explain more.

It is evident the Hughes' family heritage is fantastically rich! Cora hails from two quilting grandmothers. Dave's father was a famous painter and Dave himself is a wood sculptor. We now look forward to Cora's next greatest quilting exploit. Go get 'em Cora!
