~ Interviews with PSIO Faculty, Alumni and Students ~

Dr. Zoe Cohen, PhD - Faculty - Cardiology and Immunology Professor

Dr. Zoe Cohen is an assistant professor on the educator scholar track, teachingcourses at both undergraduate and graduate levels. Dr. Cohen not onlyteaches at the UA College of Medicine, she also serves on the admissionscommittee. Her leadership experience also includes being the vice chair of theTucson Education Policy Committee and the Physiology Discipline Director, where her role is making sure physiology is covered properly at the medicalschool.

After getting her Bachelor’s degree, Dr. Cohen earned her Master’s in ExercisePhysiology from the University of Colorado Boulder. With interest formedicine, physical therapy, and research, Dr. Cohen spent the next four yearsgetting experience in all those areas to decide what career would be the best fitfor her. After working in a hospital and a physical therapy center, she realizedthat those clinical fields were not for her. After working in a research lab, Dr.Cohen found that she enjoyed trying different experiments and thetroubleshooting process that came with research. It was in the researchenvironment that Dr. Cohen also discovered her passion for teaching. Afterearning her Ph.D. and completing her post-docs at the U of A, Dr. Cohenwanted a job that incorporated this love for teaching and has been a memberof Physiology faculty ever since.

Dr. Cohen has advised many students with Honors theses and independent

studies, where projects are more “out of the box” than traditional research. Dr.Cohen enjoys working with students on these unique projects because itallows her to “go outside [her] box, too.” Dr. Cohen states that she would liketo be more involved with educational research, specifically regardingcollaborative spaces and studying how students learn.

Outside of her many roles as a Physiology faculty, Dr. Cohen enjoys doingCrossFit 6 days a week, biking, and reading. She states that her greatestmentor is her father, who is a immunologist and “an amazing teacher” withwhom she frequently exchanges insight about teaching.

Thinking back to her time in undergrad, Dr. Cohen wishes she knew that“teachers aren’t scary.” She states, "I never went to office hours… I was muchmore in awe and didn’t really think of [my professors] as people." She wishesshe would have taken the time to know her professors better and encouragesstudents to do so. Dr. Cohen also advises students to not rely on crammingbefore an exam in order to really learn the concepts. Taking the necessarytime and effort to truly grasp the material can be helpful for rememberingother concepts in higher education.

PSIO Survival GuideTip from an Ambassador

Tips for PSIO 201 The content in PSIO 201 is taught by multiple professors, with each professor

covering a different block. PSIO 201 serves as an introductory course on the bodysystems and covers musculature, the integumentary system, the nervous system, and bones. Succeeding in PSIO 201 requires visiting the study center in Gittings. In the study center, you will find models or microscope slides that will be taughtin the lab component of this course. Learning the different parts of the models

and their physiological function will help you ace your practicals! Make sure youstay on top of all your coursework which includes lecture exams, lab quizzes, and

practicals.~Samar, Class of 2020

Tips for PSIO 202 PSIO 202 covers the cardiovascular, respiratory, endocrine, lymphatic, digestive,

renal, and reproductive systems. While this may seem like an overwhelmingamount of material at first glance, the topics are grouped together in blocks

according to relevance (i.e. cardiovascular with respiratory, etc.). Make it a habitto visit the study center in Gittings because you will still be learning lots ofanatomy. However, there will be a greater conceptual focus on the actual

physiology of the systems, which makes the material easier to digest for some! Atip for success: review the material as often as possible, this helps break

everything up into smaller sections of information. Try to review the materialright after lecture or lab to reinforce understanding.

~ Shayla, Class of 2020

Useful Flashcard Resource: AnkiIf you don't already know, Anki is an awesome online flashcard resource that

helps teach you the material while helping you remember them at the same time. Its used by many medical students and will come in very handy! A link to
