Did you know?
• All objects on land are surrounded by an invisible ocean of air.
• Air = a mixture of gas molecules that exert pressure on the objects they surround.
![Page 4: The Physics of Bird Flight 5 th Grade. Objectives: To explain how a bird is able to fly To identify three types of flight that birds use.](https://reader030.fdocuments.us/reader030/viewer/2022032517/56649c915503460f9494c9b0/html5/thumbnails/4.jpg)
Air Pressure:
• When you blow into a balloon, it gets larger
• The pressure of the air molecules pushing on the sides of the balloon make it expand
![Page 5: The Physics of Bird Flight 5 th Grade. Objectives: To explain how a bird is able to fly To identify three types of flight that birds use.](https://reader030.fdocuments.us/reader030/viewer/2022032517/56649c915503460f9494c9b0/html5/thumbnails/5.jpg)
Air Pressure: How does it work?
![Page 6: The Physics of Bird Flight 5 th Grade. Objectives: To explain how a bird is able to fly To identify three types of flight that birds use.](https://reader030.fdocuments.us/reader030/viewer/2022032517/56649c915503460f9494c9b0/html5/thumbnails/6.jpg)
Air Pressure: How does it work?
![Page 7: The Physics of Bird Flight 5 th Grade. Objectives: To explain how a bird is able to fly To identify three types of flight that birds use.](https://reader030.fdocuments.us/reader030/viewer/2022032517/56649c915503460f9494c9b0/html5/thumbnails/7.jpg)
Air Pressure
• The faster air moves, the less pressure it exerts
![Page 8: The Physics of Bird Flight 5 th Grade. Objectives: To explain how a bird is able to fly To identify three types of flight that birds use.](https://reader030.fdocuments.us/reader030/viewer/2022032517/56649c915503460f9494c9b0/html5/thumbnails/8.jpg)
Movement and Air Pressure
For birds, fast-moving air above the wing exerts less pressure
Slower-moving air below the wing exerts more pressure
![Page 9: The Physics of Bird Flight 5 th Grade. Objectives: To explain how a bird is able to fly To identify three types of flight that birds use.](https://reader030.fdocuments.us/reader030/viewer/2022032517/56649c915503460f9494c9b0/html5/thumbnails/9.jpg)
Higher pressure keeps the bird in flight
![Page 10: The Physics of Bird Flight 5 th Grade. Objectives: To explain how a bird is able to fly To identify three types of flight that birds use.](https://reader030.fdocuments.us/reader030/viewer/2022032517/56649c915503460f9494c9b0/html5/thumbnails/10.jpg)
A bird’s angle and shape of the wing causes the air to move faster above the wing than below it
![Page 11: The Physics of Bird Flight 5 th Grade. Objectives: To explain how a bird is able to fly To identify three types of flight that birds use.](https://reader030.fdocuments.us/reader030/viewer/2022032517/56649c915503460f9494c9b0/html5/thumbnails/11.jpg)
Lift: an upward force that causes a bird to rise based on the difference in pressure above and below the wings as a bird moves
through the air
![Page 12: The Physics of Bird Flight 5 th Grade. Objectives: To explain how a bird is able to fly To identify three types of flight that birds use.](https://reader030.fdocuments.us/reader030/viewer/2022032517/56649c915503460f9494c9b0/html5/thumbnails/12.jpg)
What does a bird do to get off of the ground before it uses lift to fly?
![Page 13: The Physics of Bird Flight 5 th Grade. Objectives: To explain how a bird is able to fly To identify three types of flight that birds use.](https://reader030.fdocuments.us/reader030/viewer/2022032517/56649c915503460f9494c9b0/html5/thumbnails/13.jpg)
To get into the air….
• A bird moves forward to make air move over its wings
• A bird sharply pulls down its wing to provide the power that pushes the bird forward
![Page 14: The Physics of Bird Flight 5 th Grade. Objectives: To explain how a bird is able to fly To identify three types of flight that birds use.](https://reader030.fdocuments.us/reader030/viewer/2022032517/56649c915503460f9494c9b0/html5/thumbnails/14.jpg)
Once birds are in the air, there are 3 types of bird flight
• 1) ?
• 2) ?
• 3) ?
![Page 15: The Physics of Bird Flight 5 th Grade. Objectives: To explain how a bird is able to fly To identify three types of flight that birds use.](https://reader030.fdocuments.us/reader030/viewer/2022032517/56649c915503460f9494c9b0/html5/thumbnails/15.jpg)
Three types of bird flight:
• 1) Flapping
• 2) Soaring
• 3) Gliding
![Page 16: The Physics of Bird Flight 5 th Grade. Objectives: To explain how a bird is able to fly To identify three types of flight that birds use.](https://reader030.fdocuments.us/reader030/viewer/2022032517/56649c915503460f9494c9b0/html5/thumbnails/16.jpg)
Flapping: what does that do?
![Page 17: The Physics of Bird Flight 5 th Grade. Objectives: To explain how a bird is able to fly To identify three types of flight that birds use.](https://reader030.fdocuments.us/reader030/viewer/2022032517/56649c915503460f9494c9b0/html5/thumbnails/17.jpg)
Flapping
• All birds flap their wings (sharply pull down their wings)
• Certain birds rely on flapping more than others
![Page 18: The Physics of Bird Flight 5 th Grade. Objectives: To explain how a bird is able to fly To identify three types of flight that birds use.](https://reader030.fdocuments.us/reader030/viewer/2022032517/56649c915503460f9494c9b0/html5/thumbnails/18.jpg)
Soaring
• Involves little movement
• Birds use rising currents of warm air
• Used to move upward
![Page 19: The Physics of Bird Flight 5 th Grade. Objectives: To explain how a bird is able to fly To identify three types of flight that birds use.](https://reader030.fdocuments.us/reader030/viewer/2022032517/56649c915503460f9494c9b0/html5/thumbnails/19.jpg)
Gliding
• Involves little wing movement
• Birds use falling currents of cool air
• Used to move downward
![Page 20: The Physics of Bird Flight 5 th Grade. Objectives: To explain how a bird is able to fly To identify three types of flight that birds use.](https://reader030.fdocuments.us/reader030/viewer/2022032517/56649c915503460f9494c9b0/html5/thumbnails/20.jpg)
Question: Does Soaring or Flapping take more energy?
![Page 21: The Physics of Bird Flight 5 th Grade. Objectives: To explain how a bird is able to fly To identify three types of flight that birds use.](https://reader030.fdocuments.us/reader030/viewer/2022032517/56649c915503460f9494c9b0/html5/thumbnails/21.jpg)
Answer: Flapping…it takes a large amount of energy!
![Page 22: The Physics of Bird Flight 5 th Grade. Objectives: To explain how a bird is able to fly To identify three types of flight that birds use.](https://reader030.fdocuments.us/reader030/viewer/2022032517/56649c915503460f9494c9b0/html5/thumbnails/22.jpg)
What do birds use so that they do not need to waste too much energy on flapping?
![Page 23: The Physics of Bird Flight 5 th Grade. Objectives: To explain how a bird is able to fly To identify three types of flight that birds use.](https://reader030.fdocuments.us/reader030/viewer/2022032517/56649c915503460f9494c9b0/html5/thumbnails/23.jpg)
They use warm and cool air currents
![Page 24: The Physics of Bird Flight 5 th Grade. Objectives: To explain how a bird is able to fly To identify three types of flight that birds use.](https://reader030.fdocuments.us/reader030/viewer/2022032517/56649c915503460f9494c9b0/html5/thumbnails/24.jpg)
Did you know? Warm air rises and cool air sinks
![Page 25: The Physics of Bird Flight 5 th Grade. Objectives: To explain how a bird is able to fly To identify three types of flight that birds use.](https://reader030.fdocuments.us/reader030/viewer/2022032517/56649c915503460f9494c9b0/html5/thumbnails/25.jpg)
Remember that to soar, birds use warm air currents so that they can move upward
![Page 26: The Physics of Bird Flight 5 th Grade. Objectives: To explain how a bird is able to fly To identify three types of flight that birds use.](https://reader030.fdocuments.us/reader030/viewer/2022032517/56649c915503460f9494c9b0/html5/thumbnails/26.jpg)
Remember that to glide, birds use cold air currents so that they can move downward
![Page 27: The Physics of Bird Flight 5 th Grade. Objectives: To explain how a bird is able to fly To identify three types of flight that birds use.](https://reader030.fdocuments.us/reader030/viewer/2022032517/56649c915503460f9494c9b0/html5/thumbnails/27.jpg)
What is a type of flight that we have not yet talked about that doesn’t use any lift?
![Page 28: The Physics of Bird Flight 5 th Grade. Objectives: To explain how a bird is able to fly To identify three types of flight that birds use.](https://reader030.fdocuments.us/reader030/viewer/2022032517/56649c915503460f9494c9b0/html5/thumbnails/28.jpg)
Answer: Diving does not use any lift.
• How do birds use diving to their advantage?
![Page 29: The Physics of Bird Flight 5 th Grade. Objectives: To explain how a bird is able to fly To identify three types of flight that birds use.](https://reader030.fdocuments.us/reader030/viewer/2022032517/56649c915503460f9494c9b0/html5/thumbnails/29.jpg)
Diving is used for…
• Hunting for prey
![Page 30: The Physics of Bird Flight 5 th Grade. Objectives: To explain how a bird is able to fly To identify three types of flight that birds use.](https://reader030.fdocuments.us/reader030/viewer/2022032517/56649c915503460f9494c9b0/html5/thumbnails/30.jpg)
What does a bird do with its wings so that it can effectively dive?
![Page 31: The Physics of Bird Flight 5 th Grade. Objectives: To explain how a bird is able to fly To identify three types of flight that birds use.](https://reader030.fdocuments.us/reader030/viewer/2022032517/56649c915503460f9494c9b0/html5/thumbnails/31.jpg)
Birds pull their wings in close to their bodies so that there is no more lift
• The result: gravity pulls them down!
• Fun fact: Peregrine Falcons can dive up to 300 kilometers per hour
![Page 32: The Physics of Bird Flight 5 th Grade. Objectives: To explain how a bird is able to fly To identify three types of flight that birds use.](https://reader030.fdocuments.us/reader030/viewer/2022032517/56649c915503460f9494c9b0/html5/thumbnails/32.jpg)
