November is off to a great start! Our teachers have been working diligently to plan and teach engaging lessons that make our students work hard and get smart! In every classroom, our students should be reading, writing, and speaking about grade level content. Families can support student learning at home by making sure students are attending class and turning their cameras on! We love to see your beautiful faces every day! Middle School report cards will be distributed at the end of this month and teachers will be reaching out to schedule Parent/Teacher Conferences, so keep your eyes peeled! Thank You Bob the Bike Man!

Thank You Bob the Bike Man: A special thank you goes out to Robert Charland, a.k.a. “Bob the Bike Man”, and Pedal Thru Youth for the donation of two bikes for Peck School. All students who attended our Back to School Drive Thru Event were put into a raffle for the bikes. Congratulations to our winners, Mirleysha, in grade 5 and Ethan, in grade 8!

Equity & Anti-Racism: At Peck, we are committed to promoting learning from different perspectives, incorporating the voices of those not historically heard, and recognizing untold stories. As the Thanksgiving holiday approaches, we want to encourage our community to rethink the traditional teaching of Thanksgiving that leaves out the Native American perspective. The day after Thanksgiving has been proclaimed as Native American Heritage Day and November as Native American Heritage Month. Let’s celebrate by learning about cultures, breaking stereotypes, and teaching how Native Americans’ lives have been impacted through history.

¡Saludos Amigos y Familiares de la Escuela Peck!¡Noviembre ha empezado muy bien! Nuestros maestros han estado trabajando diligentemente para planear y enseñar lecciones atractivas que hagan a nuestros estudiantes trabajar duro y ser inteligentes. Un agradecimiento especial a Robert Charland, alias "Bob el hombre de las bicis", y Pedalea a través de la juventud por la donación de dos bicis para la escuela Peck. ELA: This month in ELA we have started our new poetry unit! We are learning about how poems are different from stories, we are learning about figurative language, and we are identifying rhyme scheme! We also are reading Love That Dog and using our own poetry journals!

Specials: Artists are exploring new digital programs used to create art! We are investigating different methods to create Texture, Pattern and Symmetry in our art. Currently, we are studying the creation of Tibetan Sand Mandalas. We are practicing creating our own symmetrical works of art while being mindful and present.

Gym News: We have been working very hard in Physical Education class, we have been learning about the components of fitness as well as trying to remain as active as possible in order to deal with this stressful period in our lives. So far we have covered cardiovascular endurance and we are currently working through muscular strength and endurance. Our ultimate goal is to create our own individual Fitness video starring ourselves. The students have been very engaged and involved in the lessons. We look forward to see the fitness videos that will be showcased in the near future.

4th Grade News:

Math: In math, we have become Place Value Rockstars! We have focused on comparing numbers, writing numbers in standard, word, and expanded forms, rounding all the way up to the nearest ten thousand! I am so impressed with our students’ hard work on Zearn and their classwork. In November, we will work with adding and subtracting multi digit numbers with regrouping! Keep up the great work!

Science: This past month, our scientists had the opportunity to have a Columbian plant biologist from Cornell University join our Zoom! She taught us all about how she works with diseased plants to help them feel better.

Now, we have started our Earth Science unit and even took a virtual field trip to the Holyoke Dinosaur Footprints!

Clase de Especial: ¡Los artistas están explorando nuevos programas digitales usados para crear arte! Estamos investigando diferentes métodos para crear textura, patrón y simetría en nuestro arte. Actualmente, estamos estudiando la creación de Mandalas de Arena Tibetana. Estamos practicando la creación de nuestras propias obras de arte simétricas mientras estamos atentos y presentes.

Noticias del gimnasio: Hemos estado trabajando muy duro en la clase de Educación Física, hemos estado aprendiendo sobre los componentes de la aptitud física, así como tratando de mantenernos lo más activos posible para hacer frente a este período estresante de nuestras vidas. Hasta ahora hemos cubierto la resistencia cardiovascular y actualmente estamos trabajando en la fuerza y resistencia muscular. Matemáticas: ¡En matemáticas, nos hemos convertido en Estrellas en aprendizaje de valor posicional! Nos hemos centrado en comparar números, escribiendo los números en forma estándar, de palabra y expandida, redondeando todo el camino hasta la decena de miles más cercana! Estoy muy impresionado con el trabajo duro de nuestros estudiantes en Zearn y su trabajo de clase. En noviembre, trabajaremos con la adición y la sustracción de números de varios dígitos con reagrupación! ¡Sigan con el gran trabajo!

Ciencias: El mes pasado, nuestros científicos tuvieron la oportunidad de que un biólogo vegetal Colombiano de la Universidad de Cornell se uniera a nuestro Zoom! Nos enseñó cómo trabaja con plantas enfermas para ayudarlas a sentirse mejor.

Ahora, hemos empezado nuestra unidad de Ciencias de la Tierra e incluso hizo Un viaje virtual a las Huellasde Dinosaurio de Holyoke!

● On Nov. 6th we had our October celebration! Students did wonderful.

● Be on the lookout for announcements of events on class Dojo!

ELA: In Ela during the month of October we have continued with our exploration of community and uniqueness. Students have been asked to make inferences and relate a story that they were reading to their own lives. They also worked on a research project focusing on either the country of Japan, Italy or Columbia.

As we move forward into November we have started looking at poetry. We are using poems as another way to look into what makes us unique individuals, but also what connects us to our communities. We have also started working in guided reading groups. These groups are focused on improving reading skills by working with texts at individual students’ levels.


In music, they have been using the website BandLab to create their own musical compositions! They are recording their voices and adding loops and tracks to create their own spoken word project. They have also been working very hard on refining their skills in rhythm and note reading.

Math: During the month of October in Math, we have been working with Decimals. The specific place values that we have focused are Tenths and Hundredths, where students have learned to write the numbers out as Decimals, in Fraction Form and even using words. In November, we will continue with Decimals and expand in comparing decimals. Along with moving into Multiplicative Patterns on the Place Value Chart.

Science: In Science, the students have starting using Stemscopes as the Online Curriculum. Where all assignment will be completed when it comes to Science. The First Unit we are dealing with is titled, “Matter and Energy Flow in the Ecosystems”. At the end of the unit, the students will be able to explain the following: How can a self-sustaining garden be designed that would provide enough food for the community?

Se ha pedido a los estudiantes que hagan inferencias y relacionen una historia que estaban leyendo con sus propias vidas. También trabajaron en un proyecto de investigación centrado en el país de Japón, Italia o Colombia.

Matemáticas: Durante el mes de octubre en Matemáticas, hemos estado trabajando con Decimales. Los valores específicos que hemos enfocado son las Décimas y Centenas, donde los estudiantes han aprendido a escribir los números como decimales, en forma de fracciones e incluso usando palabras. En noviembre, continuaremos con los decimales y ampliaremos la comparación de los decimales. Además de pasar a los patrones multiplicativos en el cuadro de valor posicional.

Ciencias: En Ciencias, los estudiantes han empezado a usar los Stemscopes como plan de estudios en línea. Donde todas las tareas serán completadas cuando se trate de Ciencias.

La primera unidad que estamos tratando se titula "Flujo de materia y energía en los ecosistemas". Al final de la unidad, los estudiantes serán capaces de explicar lo siguiente: ¿Cómo se puede diseñar un jardín autosuficiente que proporcione suficiente comida para la comunidad?

ELA: We have finally jumped into unit 1! Your 6th grade authors have started to read a new novel titled, “Bud, Not Buddy”. They have been putting their close reading skills to good use-finding the main idea, points of view, and character traits as we read. Your 7th grade authors on the other hand, have started a novel titled, “A Long Walk to Water”. They are also using their close reading strategies to find the main idea, points of view, and character traits!

6th/7th Grade News

Math: Grade 6 has been working hard on finding surface area and are getting ready for their first unit assessment. In unit 2 they will be introduced to ratios.Grade 7 is working hard interpreting proportional relationships and extrapolating the data.Students have Freckle accounts and should log in to student.freckle.com and enter their class code to practice their math facts and concepts.

Science: In Science, 6th graders are doing a deep dive into fossils! We are learning all about different types of fossils, how they are created, and where you can find them! In 7th grade, students are continuing our work on habitats and ecosystems. Recently, we have been looking at environmental disasters and how they impact the food webs!

ELA: 7th Grade has recently started their new unit! We are finally able to dive into our first text of the year with A Long Walk to Water. We will be deep diving into our text to look at our characters and how their culture, time, and place has played a part in their identity. 8th Grade students have started reading a really unique book that is not only told in diary entries, but also in poems! Inside out and Back again focuses on a young girls experience trying to flee Vietnam during the war. We will be using our close reading skills to do character analysis on our main character in the upcoming weeks!

7th/8th Grade News

Math: Peck students have been working hard to improve their math skills. 7th graders are currently interpreting proportional relationships and extrapolating the data, and will soon be exploring circles. 8th graders have been studying similarity, and will soon be introduced to and interpret slope, and will learn about linear equations and use them to model real-life situations.

Science: We have been investigating Ocean Currents, Weather Patterns and having a great time experimenting with condensation, humidity and air pressure! Also exploring how meteorologists actually go about predicting the weather. By the end of our Unit we will be able to consult with oil companies and let them know if they are safe from oncoming hurricanes. Real life skills happening here!

ELA:In SHINE this month we are talkingabout turkey’s because we all lovethe fall season and Thanksgiving. Our first book of the month was “There was an old lady that swallowed a turkey”. Our students love participating. Our students areable to participate using hand overhand or hand under hand assistance with adult support. We love to make our books come to life…. Math:

In Math the SHINE class is learning about probability. We like to Check our luck. So we spun a spinnerto see what colors we landed on and filled in a graph, then we all compared graphs. Woweveryone's was so different.

Updates from Nurse Kalie: During the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, our in-person SHINE students have been practicing hand washing, learning about wearing masks, and safe distancing from others. These skills are very important to our students and our staff, and we are having fun mastering our techniques! With flu season just around the corner, we want to make sure we all protect ourselves and others by getting our flu shot before December 31, 2020. Our students and staff are adapting to our new safe practices so wonderfully, and we should all be proud of ourselves!

Science:

The SHINE kids in science made balloon turkeys and had a turkey race using different materials. They used the force of air rushing out of aballoon to push it across the room! This was also a great demonstrationof Newton’sThird Law! Nurse Kalie

Matemáticas:En matemáticas,la clase SHINE está aprendiendosobre probabilidad. Nos gusta comprobar nuestra suerte. Entonces hicimosgirar una ruleta para ver en qué colores aterrizamos y rellenamos un gráfico, luego todos comparamos los gráficos. Wow, todos eran tan diferentes.

Actualizaciones de la enfermera Kalie: Durante la pandemia de COVID-19 en curso, nuestros estudiantes SHINE en persona han estado practicando el lavado de manos, aprendiendo sobre el uso de máscaras y distanciamiento seguro de los demás. Estas habilidades son muy importantes para nuestros estudiantes y nuestro personal, ¡y nos divertimos dominando nuestras técnicas! Ciencias:Los niños de SHINE en ciencias hicieron pavos con globos y tuvieron una carrera de pavos usando diferentes materiales. ¡Usaron la fuerza del aire que salía de un globo para empujarlo por la habitación! ¡Esta fue también una gran demostración de la Tercera Ley de Newton!
