From the Desk of G. Yvonne Pérez, President & Co-Founder
Why send your child to the Pharr Oratory of St. Philip Neri School System, a Catholic dual-language elementary and secondary institution? Many parents ask themselves this question as their child becomes of age to attend a day care or school. Friends and family of these same parents also ask . . . “Why send them to a Catholic school and not take advantage of a free education in the public schools?” “What makes an Oratorian education different?” “Why pay tuition?” “Why worry so about participating in fund raising, campus activities, and why bother with learning a second language?” After serving for over 26 years as Directress and President of this school system, these are questions I continue to address to this day. This is my response.
As Catholics, we have an obligation and enjoy the right to educate our children. According to Cannon Law, 793, “ Catholic parents also have the duty and the right to select those means and institutions through which they can provide more suitably for the Catholic education of the children according to local circumstances.”1 In other words, if parents have the means to afford a Catholic education for their children, they have the duty to educate them in the faith. In a Christian atmosphere, the children are molded in a prayerful setting enhanced with traditional Christian values. Therefore, through religious instruction, prayer, the sacraments, mutual respect, and the weekly liturgy, your children are rooted in their faith and come to know the message of the Gospel. This is our primary reason for existing as a Catholic School.
As Oratorians, the difference is in the spirituality of its founder, St. Philip Neri, a 16th century saint born in Florence and known as the Apostle of Rome and the Saint of Joy. His distinctive characteristics were his charisma and spirit of joy. His focus during his lifetime was to recognize the gifts and the role of the laity in making the world a better place. Today, there are over 80 Oratorian communities worldwide. Ours is the Congregation of the Pharr Oratory of St. Philip Neri, which directs our schools under the auspices of the Holy See. To know the work and the gifts of St. Philip is to know how to serve God joyfully as teachers, youth leaders, counselors, healers, patrons, and caretakers of the disenfranchised and forgotten.
The reasons for paying tuition and fund-raising are clear: Catholic formation, high academic standards, Christian morals and values, self-discipline, safety, dual language instruction, and a sense of Christian community and belonging. The purchase of 34 acres of land, obtaining qualified instructional personnel and building a school environment, brick by brick, that reflects and respects the languages, traditions, and culture of its surrounding communities, does not come without a high cost. It happened with great sacrifice by parents and staff alike.
In conclusion, the Oratory of St. Philip Neri School System is a spirit-filled Catholic dual-language educational community. To quote Vatican Council II, “The fundamental difference between religious and other forms of education is that its aim is not simply intellectual assent to religious truths but also a total commitment of one’s whole being to the person of Christ.”2 As you can see, the gift of a Catholic education is worth the effort and the sacrifice!

SENI
ORS
St. Philip Neri was one of the noble line of Saints raised up by God in the sixteenth century to console and bless His Church. After a childhood of angelic beauty the Holy Spirit drew him away from Florence, the place of his birth, showed him the world, that he might freely renounce it, led him to Rome, modeled him in mind and heart and will, and then, as by a second Pentecost, came down in visible form and filled his soul with light and peace and joy. He would have gone to India, but God reserved him for Rome. There he went on simply from day to day, drawing souls to Jesus, exercising them in mortification and charity, and binding them together by cheerful devotions. His life was a continuous miracle as was his habitual state of ecstasy. He read the hearts of men, foretold their future, knew their eternal destiny. His touch gave health of body; his very look calmed souls in trouble and drove away temptations. He was genial, and irresistibly winning; neither insult nor wrong could dim the brightness of his joy.
The Future of Catholic Education is in Our HandsIn giving life to our children, “parents have a most serious obligation and enjoy the right to educate them; therefore, Christian parents are especially to care for the Christian education of their children according to the teachings handed on by the Church.” (Canon 226)
Fund Raising ActivitiesIn accordance with the Code of Canon Law, which guides the Christian faithful, Canon 800 states one must “foster Catholic Schools by supporting their establishment and their maintenance in proportion to their resources.” Parent participation in fund raising allows the school to enrich the student experience in ways that would otherwise not be possible.
