Born in Purkersdorf near Vienna shortly after the Second World War into a family of noble descent, Peter Fadanelli moved to Stockholm, Sweden as a young man immediately after finis-hing his university education. He soon became an avid collector of books and manuscripts from many fields, eventually forming the largest known collection of so-called ‘Exilliteratur’ – books published abroad by the German and Austrian cultural elite who had been forced into emigration worldwide by Nazi persecution. His library included the greatest rarities by the most eminent German authors, printed in the Netherlands, Scandinavia, Shanghai, and the U.S. It was disper-sed through our company in the early 1990s, and some of the books and the unique manuscript material found a new home in the German National Library, Frankfurt am Main, while the re-mainder went to the Österreichische Exilbibliothek im Literaturhaus, Vienna, where it still forms the nucleus of their collection.

A true football fan since his early youth (his favourite club is Rapid Wien, whose matches he still attends regularly when visiting his hometown) and himself an amateur player for most of his life, Peter Fadanelli was a regular buyer of books on football, as well. He maintains residences in Austria, Sweden, Spain and Italy and travels a good part of the year, which has presented him with some unique opportunities to acquire truly outstanding rarities, some of which are not to be found in any other private or institutional collection worldwide. To our knowledge the library of Peter Fadanelli is the only one of its kind to boast a complete collection of all editions of the earliest monograph on the game of football (Nos. 1 f.), the breathtakingly rare earliest manuscript record of an actual team lineup (No. 4), and all important early depictions of the game, including Zocchi’s monumental print of a 17th century football field (No. 7). The Football League (No. 23), published annually by the chief editor of FC Arsenal’s programme in only 25 complete copies, is a veritable treasure trove of information, but is neither recorded in the British Library nor held in any other institution. Also, the Fadanelli Collection is home to virtually all the early standard reference works on the history of the game (Nos. 13, 16, 17, 25, 26 and 31), the principal training manuals (Nos. 15, 24, 43 and 51), some of the very rare annual programmes of English football clubs (Nos. 20 and 22, inter alia), and a few unique signed copies (Nos. 41, 59 and 70). Altogether the collection comprises a little more than 100 volumes of books, and nearly double that figure in autographs, prints and manuscripts.

Due not only to the uniqueness of the collection and to the many rarities included, but also because of the fact that the owner divides his life between so many countries, it proved a diffi-cult task to obtain all the export licenses necessary to dispose of this collection. With this issue resolved only recently (all licenses were finally granted in early 2017), we have been entrusted by the collector to find a new home for his library and are proud now to offer his collection for sale. For this purpose we have added but a small number of items so as to close a few minor gaps in the Fadanelli corpus (including some of the official World Cup publications, now forming a complete set from 1950 to 2014, cf. Nos. 65 through 82; an original photograph of Qatar’s first football stadium, No. 55; and a collection of more than 160 autographs by famous football play-ers of the last decades, No. 53).

The first book entirely devoted to football: a complete collection of all editions ever published

1 Bardi, Giovanni de’. Discorso sopra il giuoco del calcio fiorentino: a collection of all editions of the first monograph on football. Florence, 1580–1688. Includes the first (1580), second (1615), third (1673), and fourth and definitive edition (1688), the latter in two different copies.

A rare opportunity to acquire the entire publishing history of this incunable of football literature and to investigate the editorial treatment of this crucial text throughout a century of political developments.

This is the earliest treatise (and only early monograph) on the historical precursor to the modern game of association football. Florentine “calcio” developed as an aristocratic sport practiced by the youths of the city’s great noble families – a rough game for young men bred in the old chivalric ‘condottiere’ tradition but living in an age of relative peace and affluence. Much more than a mere pastime, “calcio” was linked to important festivities, such as the exuberant Carnival season that preceded the period of religious fasting, but also great celebrations and weddings. Held in the central Piazza di Santa Croce, the games served the Florentine elite as a means of self-display and to strengthen civic virtues – and at the same time provided a welcome emotional outlet to the frenzied masses who flocked in tens of thousands to see the matches.

The collection comprises:

a [Bardi, Giovanni de’]. Discorso sopra il giuoco del calcio fiorentino. Del puro Accademico Al-terato. Florence, nella Stamperia de’ Giunti, 1580. 4to. 36 pp. With armorial woodcut on t. p. and folding engraved plate. 19th c. half calf with marbled covers and giltstamped spine on four raised bands. Occasional browning; a single underlining. In all a charming copy of the very rare edition princeps.

The detailed description of the game was written by Giovanni de’ Bardi and first published anonymously in 1580 with a dedication to Francesco I de’ Medici, Grand Duke of Tuscany. It contains a remarkable large engraved plate showing the Piazza with the players on the field immediately before kick-off.

b (Bardi, Giovanni de’). Discorso sopra ’l giuoco del calcio fiorentino. Del puro Accademico Alterato. Di nuovo ristampato. Florence, appresso Co-simo Giunti, 1615. 4to. 48 pp. With armorial woodcut (Medici arms) on t. p. and folding engraved plate. 19th c. half calf with marbled covers and giltstamped spine on four raised bands.

The book was reprinted in 1615 without major changes, save for a new dedication and preface by the printer, Cosimo Giunti, who also reveals the author’s name as Giovanni de’ Bardi, Conte di Vernio. The book was now dedicated to Archduchess Maria Maddalena of Austria, Grand Duchess of Tuscany as wife of Cosimo II de’ Medici. The fact that all editions were dedicated to the Grand Ducal family underlines how closely the game of “calcio” was interwoven with the prestige of the ruling house of Tuscany and the Florentine elite.

c Bardi, Giovanni de’. Giovanni de’. Discorso sopra il giuoco del calcio fiorentino. [...] Nuovamente ristampato coll’ aggiunta de’ capitoli del me-desimo giuoco. Florence, all’ Insegna della Stella, 1673. 4to. (4), 36 pp. Title page printed in red and black. With 2 folding engraved plates and large armorial engraving on t. p. Contemporary half vellum with coloured paper boards. Some browning and brownstaining throughout, with an unobtru-sive waterstain to the first two leaves. Binding rubbed.

The rare 1673 edition, prepared by Orazio Capponi and dedicated to Co-simo III de’ Medici, was the first to include the set of rules, condensed to 33 “capitoli”, inserted before the text. As befits an edition apparently concerned with formalizing the game’s regulations, it also included a new engraving with a top-view diagram of the participants in starting position.

c (Bardi, Giovanni de’/Bini, Pietro di Lorenzo [ed.]). Memorie del calcio Fiorentino tratte da diverse scritture. Florence, nella Stamperia di S. A. S. alla Condotta, 1688. Large 4to. (12), 118 pp. With 2 folding engraved plates (one signed by Alessandro Cecchini), large armorial engraving on t. p. (with figures, the coat of arms of the dedicatees, and other elements, engraved by Francesco Nacci), woodcut initials, and type ornaments. Con-temporary marbled boards. All edges sprinkled in red. Flyleaf and title page show stamps of historical collections (one monogrammed “MD”). Preliminaries loosened; slight browning throughout as common. Some chipping to spine.

d (The same). Bound in contemporary full vellum with giltstamped spine label. All edges sprinkled in red. Slight browning throughout as common, but a beautiful copy overall.

Pietro Bini’s definitive 1688 edition was greatly expanded and better illus-trated with newly engraved plates. Dedicated to Fernando de’ Medici and Violante Beatrice of Bavaria, it was published on the occasion of their marriage festivities in December and January 1688/89, in which at least one calcio match figured. The engraved title page shows the arms of the dedicatees flanked on one side by a figure holding a football and on the other by a player or match official holding a flag, and with the open tents used as “goal posts” behind. This edition introduces a new rule no. 32 (thus raising the total number of official rules to 34), a sort of “offside” rule concerning the alfiere (flag-bearer). Much in the manner of a pro-gramme book, the contents are a typically Baroque, highly erudite miscel-lany: apart from Bardi’s “Discorso”, it includes a learned disquisition in Latin by the Jesuit Giambattista Ferrari on the game’s ancient antecedents; a Greek poem about the sport by Giorgio Coresio, a Pisan Greek scholar who enjoyed the patronage of the Medici (previously published separately in Venice in 1611), along with its translation into Tuscan dialect; notices of the game in ancient as well as in 16th century Italian sources, and several records of historical games played. While the first copy, in contemporary marbled boards, is fairly unsophisticated, with stamps of several historical collections on the title page, the second is a tighter copy, appealingly bound in contemporary full vellum with a giltstamped spine label.

The definitive edition, from the library of a noble enthusiast of the game

2 (Bardi, Giovanni de’/Bini, Pietro di Lorenzo [ed.]). Memorie del cal-cio Fiorentino tratte da diverse scritture. Florence, nella Stamperia di S. A. S. alla Condotta, 1688. Large 4to. (12), 118 pp. With 2 folding engraved plates (one signed by Alessandro Cecchini), large armo-rial engraving on t. p. (with figures, the coat of arms of the type ornaments. Fine 19th c. green morocco binding, spine and covers elaborately gilt with title to upper cover and crowned monogram to lower cover.

First edition thus (and fourth overall): the present, greatly expanded and bet-ter-illustrated edition is dedicated to Fernando de’ Medici and Violante Be-atrice of Bavaria, as it was published on the occasion of their marriage fes-tivities in December and January 1688/89, in which at least one calcio match figured. Much in the manner of a programme book, the contents are a typi-cally Baroque, highly erudite miscellany. This edition with fine and newly en-graved plates and edited by Bini includes, apart from Bardi’s “Discorso”, a learned disquisition in Latin by the Jesuit Giambattista Ferrari on the game’s ancient antecedents; a learned Greek poem about the sport by Giorgio Core-sio, a Pisan Greek scholar who enjoyed the patronage of the Medici (previ-ously published separately in Venice in 1611), along with its translation into Tuscan dialect; notices of the game in ancient as well as in 16th century Italian sources, and several records of historical games played. The first of the two double-page plates depicts the beginning of a match in the Piazza Santa Croce, and the second is a diagram of participants in starting position. As in all cop-ies, a colophon on p. 64, naming Piero Matini as printer, has been cancelled with a slip printed with woodcut decoration.

An elaborately bound, large copy on strong paper with the ownership stamp of “Prince” Dimitrios Rhodocanakis (1840–1902), one of the most colourful characters of the learned Greek world in the 19th century. Born into a wealthy family of merchants, Rhodocanakis styled himself the 15th lineal scion of the last Byzantine emperors. All his life striving to substantiate his claims to descent from the Palaiologoi, he forged citations, invented entire books and falsely ascribed existing anonymous ones. One of the books he did write, how-ever, was an “Essay on the life and writings of Georgius Coressius”, pub-lished in Athens in 1872: his mother Argentou (Henrietta) was the daughter of Theodoros Coresio. It is therefore perhaps little surprise that on the spine and cover of his sumptuously bound personal copy of Bardi’s football book, Rhodocanakis chose to ascribe the authorship to his relative Coresio, in fact a mere contributor and long dead in 1688.

After his own passing, Rhodocanakis’s vast library was auctioned off by Rossi in Rome in 1904. It almost exclusively comprised books which were of in-terest to him historically or for his genealogy, and for most of them he had commissioned splendid bindings by the foremost French and British binders of his age (cf. Kekule, p. 196 f.). The present volume is a particularly fine and characteristic example.

An ode to football3 Rinuccini, Ottavio. Lodi de’ giocatori di pallone. Florence, Zanobi

Pignoni, 1619. 4to. (24) pp. With printer’s woodcut device on title page. Contemporary limp vellum with traces of ties. Stored in cus-tom-made half morocco case with gilt title to spine.

An ode composed in celebration of “calcio”, the early form of football played by young aristocrats in Florence since the Renaissance. The author Rinuccini (1562–1621) is famous as the librettist of “Euridice”, the first opera in the his-tory of music.

The work is dedicated to Matteo Botti (1570–1621), marchese di Campiglia, an influential Medici ambassador to the court of France who had returned to Flor-ence in 1615 and likely was a football enthusiast and himself a former player. The long poem (consisting of no less than 69 six-line verses) is preceded by the printer’s dedication to the Grand Duke, Cosimo II de’ Medici, and two sonnets to the same, composed for the “Ballo de’ Cavalli”, a ball held in the Piazza Santa Croce in honour of the ladies of the court during the Carneval of 1615/16 (cf. Solerti). Football matches played an important role in the Florentine Carneval, forming the traditional climax of the season as the youths of the city’s noble families would compete in the rough sport on Giovedì Grasso (Fat Thursday). “Sembra, che allora su Piazza di S. Trinita fusse il luogo destinato per il giuoco del Pallone [...] bellissimi, e bizzarrissimi versi del Rinuccini” (Moreni). – Slightly browned and stained; sewing professionall repaired. Very rare; a single copy in Italian libraries (Biblioteca sportiva nazionale di Roma).

All the players of both teams of a 17th century football match: the earliest surviving manuscript of an actual team lineup

4 [The Florence Match of 1673]. “Calcio bal [?] di 9 Feb. 1672 a fin di Giovedì Grasso.” Florence, 9 February 1672 (i.e., 1673 – in Florence the New Year began on 25 March until 1749/50). Folio (207 × 298 mm). Manuscript on paper in brown ink. 1 page on bifolium.

Unique document of a historical football match played in Baroque Florence, listing the complete lineup of both teams, “Rosino” (light pink) and “Mavì” (sky blue). All the players of the 1673 match recorded in this manuscript are members of the famous noble families of Florence: Alamanno and Averardo Medici (as Blue forward and Pink midfielder, respectively), as well as Tommaso Alamanni, Amerigo Antinori, Ferdinando, Luigi, Piero, and Vincenzio Capponi (likely sons and nephews of Orazio Capponi, the editor of the 1673 edition of Bardi’s book, cf. No. 1 c above), Francesco Corsini, Carlo Frescobaldi, Fran-cesco Gherardini, Giuseppe and Jacopo Marucchelli, Clemente Pazzi, Francesco Strozzi, and Luigi and Pier Francesco Del Turco, to name but a few. The second fullback on the pink team was Piero Bini, and it is tempting to speculate that he is the same man who fifteen years later, in 1688, would publish the definitive edi-tion of Bardi’s work, with much additional material and a new rule introduced to the regulations (cf. Nos. 1 d/e and 2 above).

The big game of February 9th, 1673 formed the climax of the traditional Shrovetide festivities: the competition regularly held on “Fat Thursday” (the last Thursday before Lent). The rules of Renaissance Florentine football, or “calcio”, were somewhat different from those of the modern game: specifically, players on each team numbered no fewer than 27 (with a 28th man in the role of “alfiere”, a non-participating captain, or flag-bearer). Also, the game was noticeably more aggressive, as each team consisted of 15 forwards (“innanzi”), five midfielders (“sconciatori”), four halfbacks (“datori innanzi”), and three full-backs (“datori addietro”), who doubled as keepers.

Florentine “calcio”, the original model on which Association Football is based, developed as an aristocratic sport practiced by the youths of the city’s great no-ble families – a rough game for young men bred in the old chivalric ‘condottiere’ tradition but living in an age of relative peace and affluence. Much more than a mere pastime, “calcio” was linked to important festivals, such as the exuberant Pre-Lenten Season that preceded the period of religious fasting, but also great weddings. Held in the central Piazza di Santa Croce, the games served the Flo-rentine elite as a means of self-display and to strengthen civic virtues – and at the same time provided a welcome emotional outlet to the frenzied masses who flocked in tens of thousands to see the matches.

While in 1673 the power of the Medici, Grand Dukes of Tuscany, was gradually waning, this was an important time for Florentine football: in this year, the aristocrat Orazio Capponi published his new edition of Giovanni de’ Bardi’s classic 1580 book on “calcio”, for the first time including the regulations of the game in 33 rules.

While player lists such as these must have been a common thing – indeed, such a “lista” is mentioned explicitly in rule number seven, and Bini publishes a very similar lineup at the end of his book – they constituted ephemera in the truest sense of the word: indispensable for their purpose at a given time, and casually discarded after the event. Very few can have survived; this is the only specimen we could trace in the trade or in collections. – Traces of old folds; a few slight edge flaws with minor loss to the final line; minor duststaining, otherwise finely preserved.

The great value placed on this unique survival by its former owner is evident from the elaborate case in which it is housed: a massive, 45 × 70 cm storage portfolio fashioned out of a precious 17th century Italian light-coloured leather binding over wooden boards, showing a fine blindstamped design of meshed quatrefoils, with 24 brass open-work fittings and bosses accented by underlaid red leather, incorporating striking “football” fittings on both covers and enclosing a red satin casing for the manuscript.

5 Merian, Matthäus. Football players inflating a ball. No place, 1620s? Engraving. 110 × 85 mm. Matted.

An uncommon scene of two gentlemen inflating a ball before the walls of a Renaissance city, with several children playing football in the back-ground and a lady looking on. The image is captioned in Latin and Ger-man: “Ecce tumescentem follem quae caussa tumoris? Cum spiritu in-fusus liquor. / Wiltu den Ballon schlagen gschwind, Must sehen das du habest Wind.” The scene’s double entendre becomes obvious when one considers it in the context of the Dutch book of emblematic riddles (“Incogniti scriptoris nova Poemata”, 1624) in which it was used.

Well-preserved with generous margins.

6 Callot, Jacques. Parterre du Palais de Nanci. Taille en eau forte et dedié à Madame la Duchesse de Lorraine. Nancy, 1625. Etch-ing with engraving. 430 × 300 mm. Matted.

The great ball game as played under Charles IV of Lorraine, in the for-mal garden of the Palace of Nancy. The view is peopled by a multitude of figures: at bottom centre, watching the match, are the Duke and his wife Nicole, the daughter of Henry II of Lorraine, holding a parasol, surrounded by members of the court, soldiers and a crowd of onlookers.

Slight browning and foxing, with tiny marginal tears. A fine impression in good condition.

con la festa del Calcio fatta l’anno 1738 alla Real Presenza de Regnanti Sovrani. Florence, Carlo Gregori, [1744]. Etching with engraving, 700 × 537 mm. Matted.

Lively scene showing the Piazza di Santa Croce in Florence with a foot-ball (“calcio”) match in progress. Among the noble spectators is the Viceroy of Tuscany, Marc de Beauvau, Prince of Craon, who admin-istrated the Grand Duchy from 1737 to 1754 for Francois de Lorraine (later Emperor Francis I), who had been declared successor of the last Medici ruler Gian Gastone.

This was issued as the final plate in the famous series entitled “Scelta di XXIV Vedute delle principali contrade, piazze, chiese, e palazzi della Cit-tà di Firenze”, a set of engravings after the drawings of famous Floren-tine landmarks which Zocchi had been commissioned to record by the Marchese Andrea Gerini (his drawings now rest in New York’s Pierpont Morgan Library). Occasional reinforcements and repairs; a few marginal tears. A masterpiece by Giuseppe Zocchi, considered an important doc-ument of eighteenth century Florence.

A monumental lithograph in the style of Toulouse-Lautrec10 [Juventus F.C.]. Turin, Pietro Cassina, ca. 1900. Lithograph,

700 × 1000 mm. Rolled.

A charming and very rare football poster, lithographed by Cassina in Tu-rin in the early twentieth century: a dynamic scene, completely focused on the action that takes place in the foreground with two players com-peting for possession of the ball. The players may be members of Juven-tus (in red – actually, pink – and black home kit) and Internazionale F.C. Torino (in their white away colours). The teams of Turin (and Genoa) are usually credited with first bringing Anglo-Saxon style football to Italy.

A few horizontal and vertical fold marks; very well preserved.

The history of the game explained17 Wall, Frederick J./Alcock, Charles William (et al.). The Book of Foot-

ball. London, Amalgamated Press, 1906. Folio. XII, 292 pp. With frontispiece, showing England-Scotland match, Bramall Lane, Shef-field, 1903. Numerous illustrations in the text. Half vellum over pur-ple boards, top edge gilt.

First edition of this important early work that traces the history of the game and the foremost clubs of the time. With contributions from C. W. Alcock, F. W. Wall, William McGregor, A. J. Gould and many others, it traces the history of the game and the foremost clubs of the time. Amongst a hatful of gems are a feature on the new Chelsea FC, founded the previous year; a discussion of the famous 1905 All Blacks rugby team; and an article on American football. All the major clubs of the day are covered by a brief history over at least three pages with an accompanying team photograph. Without doubt, one of the classics of football literature, originally published in 12 monthly parts in 1905. “A vital contribution to football history” (Seddon).

Contents thumbed in places, a couple of very short closed tears. A superb copy of one of the great football books.

Includes: The same. Facsimile edition. Basildon, Association of Football Statisticians, 1987. 4to. 292, (16) pp.

The “black tulip” of football books, the only complete set known23 Johnston, W. M. The Football League. The Competitions of the Sea-

son 1931[–1939]. London, [for the author], 1932–1940. 8vo. 8 vols. Original red cloth, title gilt to the spines of all but the first year, and the upper boards of all, blind panel to the front board of the last five volumes.

First editions, extremely rare. Only 25 sets can possibly exist, and we can trace no set, not even single individual annual copies, institutionally. “For eight sea-sons during the thirties Billy Johnston, editor of the Arsenal FC programme for many years, kept his own hand-written records on a season-by-season basis. He then privately published them in eight volumes, each limited to forty copies – results, scorers, transfers and much else of interest is presented in these unique and extremely scarce records, later published in facsimile by the Association of Football Statisticians” (Seddon). The limitation was in fact variable through the publication’s brief history. No limitation is stated for the first year; 1932–33 has a label mounted on the front pastedown to the effect that “The Edition is limited to Twenty-Five Presentation Copies”, and 1933–34 has a similar label to the front free stating that “This Book is confined to 35 Presentation Copies”; 1934–35, 1935–36, and 1936–37 have stated limitations of “40 Presentation Copies”, which in 1937–38 and 1938–39 becomes “50 Presentation Copies”. Evidently the outbreak of the Second World War ended production for the duration, and it was never resumed.

Somewhat sunned, rubbed, soiled, spines starting to split and chip head and tail, all hinges sound, endpapers browning and contents lightly toned, but still an excellent set of this highly desirable “black tulip” of football collecting: one of only 25 such sets printed and likely the only complete set to have survived.

24 Jack, David. Soccer. Experiences of the game with practical instruction on training and on play in each position. London, Putnam, 1934. 8vo. VIII, (4), 336 pp. With portrait frontispiece, 15 other plates and 2 dia-grams. Original pale green cloth lettered in red on spine and front board with dust jacket.

First and only edition of one of the first football personality technique books. Born in Bolton in 1899, David Jack played first for Plymouth Argyle, the club that his father managed. In 1920 he signed for Bolton Wanderers where he spent eight seasons, forming a partnership with Joe Smith, scoring 300 goals between them. Jack made history with the first goal at Wembley Stadium in the 1923 FA Cup Final when Bolton beat West Ham 2–0. In 1928, with Bolton in financial trouble, he was signed by Herbert Chapman for Arsenal for £10,890. The fee was twice the then record, but considered a bargain by Chapman, who often recounted the tale of his getting the Bolton directors drunk, while he himself drank gin-free gin and tonics. Jack was a great success at Highbury and was the club’s top scorer through one of its most prolific periods, winning the 1929–30 FA Cup and Championships in 1930–31, 1932–33, and 1933–34. He scored 124 times in 208 matches, making him the eighth highest scorer in the history of the club.

Jacket somewhat rubbed and with a few minor chips, price-clipped but textually and pictorially largely complete, a very good copy. An extremely uncommon book, very rarely encountered in the jacket.

The first football encyclopaedia25 Johnston, Frank (ed.). The Football Encyclopaedia. London,

Associated Sporting Press, 1934. 8vo. 320 pp. With frontispiece and 28 plates. Original red cloth. Dustjacket.

First edition. – The first attempt to publish a comprehensive handbook to the game, for the first time laying out in alphabetical order the technical terms, major names of clubs and competitions and other football jargon so vital to under-standing the game. Includes references to many little-known clubs and players of lesser profile. With a preface by George Allison, the former Arsenal manager. “A gem of a volume likely to yield an unknown snippet or two even to the most knowledgeable historian.”

Rubbed with chips to head and tail of spine. A very good copy, very unusual to find in original wrapper.
