The symptoms and management of sleep disorders in children/adolescents may be different from adults – children are not just little adults. Children’s Hospitals and Clinics of Minnesota Pediatric Sleep Disorders Program specializes in the diagnosis, testing and intervention for problems falling asleep, staying asleep, breathing during sleep, and excessive daytime sleepiness. The Pediatric Sleep Disorders Program is staffed by: 1. Physicians Gerald Rosen, MD; John Garcia, MD; Keith Cavanaugh, MD; and Laurel Wills, MD are pediatric board certified sleep specialists. Their focus is on evaluation and treatment of all types of pediatric sleep disorders. These include but may not be limited to: • Obstructive sleep apnea • Insomnia • Narcolepsy • Night terrors • Excessive daytime sleepiness • Circadian rhythm disorder • Enuresis The Pediatric Sleep Disorders Program

The Pediatric Sleep Disorders Program is staffed by:

Referral/scheduling appointmentCall for an appointment with the Pediatric Sleep Disorders Program at (651) 220-6258.This appointment may require a referral from your child’s primary provider.

Following referralOneofourphysiciansandthepediatricnursespecialistwillmeetwithyourfamilyinourclinictodeterminetheneed for future testing and a sleep management plan. You should expect to be in sleep clinic for at least one hour.

Your clinic appointment will include: •Reviewofpastmedicalhistory •Reviewofcurrentmedicalhistory •Reviewoffamilysleephistory •Physicalexamination •Reviewofcurrentsleeproutine

If diagnostic testing is neededYou will be referred to the Special Diagnostic Sleep Lab for a future overnight sleep recording if diagnostic testing is needed. This recording is called a Polysomnogram (PSG) and is useful in diagnosing many sleep disorders.

Daytime nap studies are sometimes also necessary in conjunction with the overnight recording to evaluate daytime sleepiness.

IfaPSGisnecessary,immediatelyfollowingyourclinicappointment,youwillbegivenatouroftheSpecialDiagnosticSleep Lab. At that time, an appointment for the overnight test will be made.

Notallsleepdisordersrequiretesting.Othertreatmentsmayincludebehaviormodificationsand/ormedications. Iftestingisrequired,theresultswillbeavailablewithinoneweekfollowingcompletionofthetest.

Following your appointment:The Pediatric Sleep Disorders Program nurses will review the sleep management plan, obtain prior authorizations for future testing, provide support and answer any questions.
