HISTORIC SIGN EXHIBIT NOW THROUGH OCTOBER 12The Southold Historical Society is hosting an exhibition of historic signs that were cre-ated on Long Island between 1830 and 1930 at the Society’s Ann Currie-Bell House - Mayne Memorial Gallery, 55200 Main Road, Southold. Unlike many other regions of the northeast, surviving period signs from Long Island are unusual. It appears that once no longer useful, signs on Long Island were more regularly stripped and re-used for other purposes than in other regions. This exhibition will feature signs dating from 1830 to 1930. The majority are from eastern Suffolk County. The fea-tured signs come from the Society’s collection, other local museum collections, as well as those loaned by private owners. The exhibit will be on display Saturday, Sunday, and Wednesdays, 1-4pm. For more info contact the Southold Historical Society at (631) 765-5500.

“RHYTHM & BLUES” ART EXHIBITION THROUGH AUGUST 2This Southold Historical Society exhibition at the Reichert Family Center, Cosden-Price Gallery, 54127 Main Road, Southold, features the artworks of award winning artist Bar-bara Bilotta. Artist reception Thursday, July 3, 5-7pm. Barbara Bilotta considers herself an Abstract Expressionist, and her vibrant paintings certainly have the visual and emotional power that is so much a part of that school of painting. The majority of her different works will be for sale. For more info contact the Southold Historical Society at (631) 765-5500.

Mattituck Post Office and Walter C. Grabie’s Appliance Store In May of 1938, James D. Norris of Nassau Point purchased the plot of land known as the Gables Grill Corner. James D. Norris was a major sports promoter who lived in Mattituck on Peconic Bay. He was the head of the International Boxing Club and owner of the NHL Detroit Red Wings. Rumors surfaced that he would open a renowned New York restaurant at the site, but this plan never

materialized. Albert H. Silkworth, a Mattituck Real Estate broker, purchased the building in 1951 and proposed to remodel it as a suitable site for a new Post Office. The Chamber of Commerce, however, objected to the site, arguing that the increase in pedestrian traffic would make the intersection on Main Road too dangerous. In 1961, Walter C. Grabie relocated his appliance and TV store from Love Lane to the Gables building.

Harry DePetris and His Wife, Jennie. The original owner of the Gables build-ing, Harry DePetris, came to this country in 1908 from Italy with his wife, Vincenza, known as “Jennie.” In 1910, they came to Mattituck and opened a fruit and vegetable store on the west side of Love Lane, located about where the Sweet Shoppe is today. Harry and his wife worked hard building up their business and their establishment prospered. Later, DePetris ventured into the real estate field, developing a tract on Peconic Bay in Laurel. Many people will remember Harry and Jennie’s son, Larry DePetris, who was the pharmacist for many years at Barker’s Pharmacy on Love Lane.
