MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL, MRS FISHBOURNE

This week we have been learning about Digital Competence. Many children throughout the school have been tak-ing part in the Hour of Code activities.

The Hour of Code is an internationally known concept where the importance of digital competence is highlighted. Digital competence is a set of skills, knowledge and attitudes that enable the confident, creative and critical use of technologies. It is essential for learn-ers if they are to be informed, capable and have the potential to be successful in today’s society.

Digital competence is based upon 5 ar-eas:

• Information and data literacy

• Communication and collabora-t ion

• Digital content creation

• Safety

• Problem Solving

Our enquiry based curriculum allows children to gain experience in a range of digital media. At The Pearl, we be-lieve that the development of digital competencies should start at a young age, however decisions as to the types of technologies and the amount of time spent with them should be carefully considered. For example, the principles of coding can be learned using paper cups or building blocks.

Current research has shown that 58% of all new STEM jobs are in computing, 8% of STEM graduates are in computer sci-ence. Therefore it is essential to prepare the next generation prepare for this so that they thrive in the digital economy.

Over the weekend, and the winter break, why not encourage your child to com-plete some activities on the hour of code website? Hour of code is available for everyone to access for free at hourof-code.com. For some activities you do not need to work on a computer.

Mrs Fishbourne

CHILDREN’S READING FOLDERS AND LIBRARY BAGS

Children from Pearl’s Eco Club had a wonderful idea about how the school could cut down on its use of plastic. After discussing the issue with Ms Cul-len and Ms Cockroft during Eco Club, the children wrote letters to Mrs Fish-bourne. Their idea was to stop using plastic wallets for home reading books and to use library bags instead. Here are some quotes from their letters:The Eco Club is really sad about all the plastic being used in school.”

“We have come up with a great idea. Instead of using plastic reading folders, everyone could just put their books in their library bags!”

Mrs Fishbourne thinks this is a fantastic idea from our children.

Next term, we ask that your child uses his or her library bag instead of the reading folders. If the folders are colour coded, the class teacher may tie a ribbon to the handle. The library book can remain at home for the week, just pop that one in the bag on library day.

We hope you will support our children in this initiative. It is wonderful to see how much the children care for our planet.

Ellie - For coming 1st place in the U8 Irish Dancing European and Asian Chamionships in Amstedam!

Congratulations Ellie!

Shamma and Khaled - For finish-ing stage 1 of (I read Arabic).
