January is a distant memory. We have ushered in February with our Catholic Schools Week Grandparents Day. Our day began with a Mass celebrated by Fr. Corey. The church was packed! After Mass, everyone gathered in the hall for donuts, coffee, and conversations. A good time was had by all. To the grandparents, I want to say, “Thank you!” for instilling in your children the importance of a Catholic Education. I also want to thank the PTG for setting everything up and making the event the success that it was. Catholic Schools Week 2019 may be over, but our mission is not! We continue to teach our students in a Christ-centered environment while guiding them to be the best version of themselves. Dear St. Pius X Families,

I want to let you know that our Open House was a rousing success. The hall was full of current and prospective parents. Families stopped by Mrs. Hernandez’s and Mrs. Lopez’s table inquiring about availability of positions in several classes. I felt so blessed. Most of the families were referrals from you! Families who already attend St. Pius X. I have always believed that my parents are my best marketing team. Your words ring far truer than mine. Please keep preaching the Gospel of St. Pius X. Your support of our efforts will keep us strong. Mr. Turskey

The Difficulty of Being and Hearing a Prophet

Claiming to be a prophet means claiming to be called by God; it is an awesome responsibility to say, “The word of the LORD came to me” (Jeremiah 1:4) or “The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me” (Isaiah 61:1), the saying that Jesus adopted. Nor is it easy for others to hear someone make this claim. Prophets look very ordinary. They don’t have physical evidence of a divine call, so it is tempting to respond with, “Who are they, to talk like that?”

The difference is that prophets have learned to see the world as God sees it, and their vocation is to

summon people to bring God’s justice and God’s mercy to that world. This is a difficult, even dangerous task. After all, prophets have to speak truth to power, to the kings and princes . . . its priests and people who resist

changing their ways. Jeremiah’s call is typical: God warns him of dangers to come, even as he promises him deliverance: “They will fight against you but not prevail over you, for I am with you to deliver you” (Jeremiah 1:19).

Jesus faces these same difficulties, as his fellow Nazarenes, who initially admired his gracious words (Luke 4:22), become skeptical, suspicious, and then openly hostile. Jesus understands these reactions: “Doubtless you will say to me . . . ”(4:23), and, just as God promised Jeremiah, Jesus is delivered. He passes through the crowd before they attempt, literally, to throw him out. As we are called to act as prophets in our world today, it is a comfort to know that God will likewise deliver us.

EDGE: Catholic middle school youth ministry program. EDGE provides a safe, fun place for youth to find solid Catholic community, to get answers to their questions about faith, and, most importantly, to experience Jesus in a profound and personal way. Edge resources speak to the physical, psychological, cognitive, relational, and spiritual maturation of middle school youth. Edge resources make it easier for youth ministers to plan out their semesters of Edge Night, retreats, and to train a team of adults, the Core Team, to assist them in the ministry. The resources present Catholic

teaching in a way that young people can understand. Here are the meeting dates for the reminder of the year:

• February: 5th; 19th • March: 5th; 19th • May:7th; 21st

Sharing the Gospel ~ Luke 4: 21-30

If Jesus lived next door to you, you might not believe in

him. People who lived in his hometown did not believe

that Jesus could heal. Everyone said, "He's just a

carpenter's son, he can not heal." Jesus got tired of

hearing those words. He left his hometown to go

where people believed in him. Believe in Jesus, and he

will be with you when you are sick. Jesus is our greatest

teacher. He teaches us how to live the way God wants

us to live.

Mission for the WeekMake a card for someone who is sick in your family or

neighborhood.

PrayerDear God, help me to keep on doing what you

want, no matter what other people say. Amen
