Brothers and Sisters, I want to take a few moments and talk about change. Certainly “change” is a word common to FBC’s experience over the last few years, and it’s one particularly relevant to the last six months. “Change” is a good word when it reflects our ready willingness to follow the Chief Shep- herd and Overseer, Jesus, into new contexts of Gospel ministry. But, change is also a difficult thing to wel- come at times, a difficult thing to pace, and difficult thing to engage well. As we together walk through change, my prayer is that we will be a people who embody Psalm 133. In order to help this process, may I share a few thoughts? First, I think for some of us it feels as if we’ve made huge transitions in a short time across many areas of our body life. And while that is true to a point, may I also gently suggest that we’ve made only a few substantive changes thus far? By way of review, here are the areas in which we’ve made actual noteworthy change: We’ve (You’ve) welcomed a new pastor and preacher/teacher (for which I am very grateful). We expanded our Youth Director role into a full-time Youth Direc- tor/Ministry Coordinator position. A small group, followed by the Ministry Team, recently concluded a fresh look at our Mission and Vision statements. The Ministry Team has now ratified these statements as part of a strategic plan for 2018. We’ve done a little to freshen and reorganize our sanctuary space, without doing much that is drastically different. We’ve done a few things differ- ent in terms of celebrating com- munion, but nothing that FBC has- n’t practiced before in the past. I’ve discontinued our previous manner of employing the prayer chain, and instead suggested a new role for a Prayer Coordina- tor. We’ve added one additional Sunday School opportunity, and a bi-monthly Sunday evening gath- ering. Also, one of our families has begun hosting a monthly Sun- day afternoon game time. As part of caring for our children, we’ve established one additional step in screening our Children’s Ministry volunteers. To be clear, most of these changes have been limited, and more of an “adding to,” than a “taking from.” Now, what probably feels more over- whelming to some is that we’ve also begun discussing change in several key areas. These include the follow- ing: Pastoral Leadership at FBC - We’ve begun thinking about, studying, and discussing the issue of biblical eldership. This is the first step in a long-term process of seeking the Lord with respect to pastoral leadership in this local church. Children and Youth Ministries - We’ve conducted a workshop and established a team to consid- er how we effectively steward our gifts and opportunities in min- istry to children and youth. I’m hopeful that this process will result in short and long-term steps of joyful obedience as we respond to Jesus’ leading. World Outreach - The World Outreach team has begun a process of study and discussion with respect to our fu- ture as an evangelizing church. Brothers and Sisters,

I want to take a few moments and talk about change. Certainly “change” is a word common to FBC’s experience over the last few years, and it’s one particularly relevant to the last six months. “Change” is a good word when it reflects our ready willingness to follow the Chief Shep-herd and Overseer, Jesus, into new contexts of Gospel ministry. But, change is also a difficult thing to wel-come at times, a difficult thing to pace, and difficult thing to engage well. As we together walk through change, my prayer is that we will be a people who embody Psalm 133. In order to help this process, may I share

a few thoughts?

First, I think for some of us it feels as if we’ve made huge transitions in a short time across many areas of our body life. And while that is true to a point, may I also gently suggest that we’ve made only a few substantive changes thus far? By way of review, here are the areas in which we’ve made actual

noteworthy change:

• We’ve (You’ve) welcomed a new pastor and preacher/teacher (for

which I am very grateful).

• We expanded our Youth Director

role into a full-time Youth Direc-

tor/Ministry Coordinator position.

• A small group, followed by the Ministry Team, recently concluded a fresh look at our Mission and Vision statements. The Ministry Team has now ratified these statements as part of a strategic

plan for 2018.

• We’ve done a little to freshen and reorganize our sanctuary space, without doing much that is

drastically different.

• We’ve done a few things differ-ent in terms of celebrating com-munion, but nothing that FBC has-

n’t practiced before in the past.

• I’ve discontinued our previous

manner of employing the prayer chain, and instead suggested a new role for a Prayer Coordina-

tor.

• We’ve added one additional Sunday School opportunity, and a bi-monthly Sunday evening gath-ering. Also, one of our families has begun hosting a monthly Sun-

day afternoon game time.

• As part of caring for our children,

we’ve established one additional step in screening our Children’s

Ministry volunteers.

To be clear, most of these changes have been limited, and more of an

“adding to,” than a “taking from.”

Now, what probably feels more over-whelming to some is that we’ve also begun discussing change in several key areas. These include the follow-

ing:

Pastoral Leadership at FBC - We’ve begun thinking about, studying, and discussing the issue of biblical eldership. This is the first step in a long-term process of seeking the Lord with respect to pastoral leadership in this local

church.

Children and Youth Ministries - We’ve conducted a workshop and established a team to consid-er how we effectively steward our gifts and opportunities in min-istry to children and youth. I’m hopeful that this process will result in short and long-term steps of joyful obedience as we respond

to Jesus’ leading.

World Outreach - The World Outreach team has begun a process of study and discussion with respect to our fu-ture as an evangelizing church.

To be clear, change in these areas is still a matter of study, discussion, and prayer. I believe that God intends for us to take steps of obedience pertinent to each, steps that will necessitate change. But, I also believe that he means us to take those steps in his timing, and not mine. Our mission as the church is urgent - we are ambassadors for Christ in a rapidly changing world with mil-lions around us who to whom the Gospel must come. Thus, our need for change is also urgent. That said, our mission is not frantic. We work at God’s pace, led by the Spirit, in his time. Thus, we need not pursue frantic change. Rather, we can take inten-tional, obedient, and careful steps as the

Spirit leads.

Finally, let me emphasize that change is not essentially a repudiation of the past. Ra-ther, it is an appreciative embrace of our history, and then a faithful response to the present with an eye toward the future. As we walk this process of change, let’s be re-ally excited about all that Jesus intends to

do in-and-through us for the glory of God!

In Christ,

PJ

Dear FBC Family,

This year I am leading a team of students

and adults from Felton Bible Church to

Puerto Rico the first week of July, 2018 to

work alongside others in the effort to re-

store homes, communities, and hope for a

return to normal life for those hit hardest by

the 2017 hurricane season. Felton Bible

Church Students and adults will go under

the umbrella of Group Missions Trips to serve the needs of the most desperate

Puerto Rican communities. The purpose of this trip is to minister both materially

and spiritually. We will be challenged to grow new eyes for service, new ears

for compassion, new thoughts for responding, and new hearts for people in

need. It will be a powerful experience getting to know those who have lost

their homes and their livelihood and just seeing how God is working in all their

lives in spite of the struggles they face.

We will also bond as a group, building relationships across generations and

geography through the workdays and in the evening discussions about what

happened each day. I am excited we can take advantage of the blessings that

we have been given. God works wonders in every corner of the world and

through people that are willing to help with it, and I am grateful for the oppor-

tunities I have been given, to glorify Him and to do my part.

Please pray for me and my team, as we prepare to embark on this exciting

trip. If you are interested in supporting us, would you prayerfully consider do-

nating financially to this trip? If you are unable, thank you for

reading and sharing my joy at what the Lord is doing in

the hearts of our Students.

Thank you and God Bless,

Isaac Eryavec
