PLENARY SESSIONS

OPENING PLENARY – GARETH DAVIES Oxford University Press

CHANGING WITH THE TIMES We are living in a digital age, but how does this affect the learning styles and expectations of our students? Can we continue teaching in the same manner or should our teaching reflect the changing environment around us? In this talk we will look at some of the habits of the digital generation, discuss what lessons we can learn from them and consider if we can apply these in our classroom. N.B. this is NOT a session about technology although it has some technology integrated into it. GARETH DAVIES – biodata: Gareth Davies is a teacher and teacher trainer based in Prague, Czech Republic. He has been involved in the ELT industry since 1995 teaching in Portugal, Spain, the Czech Republic and the UK. From 2001 to 2008 he ran a Trinity CertTESOL course and since 2005 has been developing and delivering teacher training for Oxford University Press. Gareth also contributes to some OUP material, including local editions of Headway and Solutions. Gareth has recently completed a 3 month sabbatical teaching in San Sebastian where he reminded

himself about the challenges of teaching groups of teens. CLOSING PLENARY – JAMIE KEDDIE Oxford University Press

TAKING VIDEO APART

In this presentation, we will look at the medium of video as if it were a car engine. We will take it apart and consider each individual component in isolation. In doing so, we will see possibilities for language production and language study along the way. We will also look at a number of guiding principles that will be of use to any teacher who wishes to make the most of the medium in the classroom.

JAMIE KEDDIE – biodata Jamie Keddie is a European-based teacher trainer, storyteller, Oxford University Press author, and British Council ELTon award winner. He is the founder of LessonStream.org - a resource site for teachers which explores possibilities for image and video in the classroom. His publications include Images in the Resource Books for Teachers series (OUP, 2009) and Bringing Online Video into the Classrooom (OUP, 2014). Jamie is an associate trainer at Norwich Institute for Language Education in the United Kingdom.

LIST OF SEMINARS/WORKSHOPS:

SEMINAR 1 – PAVLA MILERSKI Freelance TEFL Teacher MEANINGFUL LANGUAGE PRACTICE Are your students overwhelmed by the amount of material they have access to? Can they cope with matching pictures and recognizing definitions adequately? How about active versus passive knowledge? And the quality of their production? This session focuses on practical ideas for exploiting materials, training learners to notice language, and making language practice and revision lessons more memorable. Level:all levels Age: Young Adults, Adults Course type: General English SEMINAR 2 – NIKKI FORTOVA Oxford University Press FUNCTION IN ENGLISH If you're ever fortunate enough to be addressed with the lesser spotted "how do you do?" or more commonly, "how's it going?", "what's up?" or "alright?", do you respond by telling the truth? If someone says "let's do lunch sometime" should you whip out your diary and tentatively pencil in a date? And why do the Brits say "sorry" when someone else bumps into them with their trolley in the supermarket? As language teachers one of our main aims is to equip learners with the tools to be effective communicators in English. In our quest, we often teach vocabulary and grammar as separate items, but this doesn't help our learners know that the response to "how do you do?" is "how do you do?". Knowing how to react to certain phrases, that is, functional language, in certain situations is key for effective communication to take place. In this practical session we'll explore functions of the language and how they can be taught in the classroom using examples from the new International Express. This session will give you several ideas to help you help your learners function in English. Level: Pre-Intermediate, Intermediate, Upper-Intermediate Age: Young adults, Adults Course type: General English, Soft Business English

Page 7: The P.A.R.K. Conference€¦ · The P.A.R.K. Conference Spring 2014 14thTEACHERS PARK International Conference for Teachers of English March 29th 2014 arvičova 85, 602 00 rno CONFERENCE

SEMINAR 3 – JEREMY TAYLOR Freelance Writer/ TEFL Teacher FUN COOPERATIVE ACTIVITIES IN THE LANGUAGE CLASSROOM In my seminar I’ll demonstrate some fun ways of getting a group to work as a team to achieve a common goal. These will include: 1. Ranking exercises of hotel reviews. 2. Sequencing a historical event (Operation Mincemeat). 3. Working out a murder mystery 4. Have fun with mobile phones 5. Musical questions and answers. There are some activities for primary teachers, some for secondary, but everyone is welcome to come along and have fun. Level: Intermediate, Upper-Intermediate, Advanced+ Age: Teens, Young adults, Adults, Mature Course type: General English

SEMINAR 4 – KATEŘINA ANNA JOSELOVÁ P.A.R.K. School of English A CREATIVE WAY TO LEARN We all create them every day without even realizing it: while making a shopping list, deciding what to wear, or indeed planning our lessons. So how can we help our students to use a technique that they commonly call upon outside of the classroom - making connections between ideas through associations - to revise and learn effectively? In the seminar we will look at how to benefit from and make mind-maps on paper and on a computer, and you will be given the chance to create your own as well. Level:all levels Age: all ages Course type: all types

SEMINAR 5 – HANA BABINCOVÁ P.A.R.K. School of English EXPLOITING SONGS Songs are fun and students like them, but they are often used only to practise listening skills through gap-fills - and that can get a bit dull. In this seminar we will look at some other types of listening activity and also at how songs can be

Page 8: The P.A.R.K. Conference€¦ · The P.A.R.K. Conference Spring 2014 14thTEACHERS PARK International Conference for Teachers of English March 29th 2014 arvičova 85, 602 00 rno CONFERENCE

exploited for teaching other skills as well as grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation. The activities will be demonstrated through an old English ballad, and are adaptable for all levels. Level:all levels Age: all ages Course type: General English

SEMINAR 6 – ANETTE IGEL Oxford University Press ALL MIXED UP… More or less all of us teach mixed-ability and /or mixed-level classes, but what does that actually mean? Is it the same or something different? How can make our lessons interesting and challenging for stronger students without forgetting about the weaker ones? And where does a course book which seems to be too easy for some students and too challenging for others fit into this? In this session we will look at some of the implications of teaching mixed-level and/or -ability classes, and look at ways to adapt coursebook activities so that our students get the most out of their lessons. Level: Elementary, Pre-Intermediate Age: Young learners, Teens Course type: General English

SEMINAR 7 – DAVE CLEARY Oxford University Press DOING IT FOR THEMSELVES Teachers spend a lot of time in the classroom telling students about grammar and explaining individual items of vocabulary - wouldn't it be great if students could do this for themselves and access the language they personally need? In this session we will go step-by-step through an activity that teaches students, from teens to adults, to find interesting language in a reading or listening text before providing practice through personalisation. Learning this skill allows students to find and use the language they want from the material they are interested in. Level: Intermediate, Upper-Intermediate, Advanced Age: Young adults, Adults Course type: General English

Page 9: The P.A.R.K. Conference€¦ · The P.A.R.K. Conference Spring 2014 14thTEACHERS PARK International Conference for Teachers of English March 29th 2014 arvičova 85, 602 00 rno CONFERENCE

SEMINAR 8 – TEREZA JANÍČKOVÁ P.A.R.K. School of English BORED PUPILS? NOT IN MY (AND YOUR) CLASSROOM! Do your pupils want more interactive and dynamic lessons? Do they like to compete and have fun in their classroom? Are they tired of routine grammar exercises? Do you want your lessons to be more communicative and practical? Do you want to be able to measure your pupils’ progress easily? Do you want to be sure your pupils are good at all four language skills? Did you know that when you prepare your pupils for Cambridge YLE exams, you are able to achieve all these things? Come and find out how easily and effectively this can be done by joining in with the practical activities presented in this seminar. Level:Elementary Age: Young Learners Course type: General English

SEMINAR 9– ELEANOR LURRING Freelance TEFL teacher AN INTRODUCTION TO USING CORPORA It is no exaggeration to say that corpora have revolutionised the study of language over the last few decades" (Hunston 2002). Corpora provide naturally occurring examples of language stored electronically. Essentially, they tell us what real-life language is like, allowing us to examine for lexical collocation, or the frequency of words and typical structural patterns. This introductory session will suggest ways in which teachers can exploit corpora as a reference resource, and for classroom use.

Level: Pre-Intermediate, Intermediate, Upper-Intermediate, Advanced+ Age: Teens, Young adults, Adults, Mature Course type: General English, Business

SEMINAR 10 – JAMIE KEDDIE Oxford University Press STORYTELLING SKILLS FOR LANGUAGE LEARNERS It is often teachers of young learners who are the quickest to embrace teacher-led storytelling as a way of engaging students and structuring sessions. But we

Page 10: The P.A.R.K. Conference€¦ · The P.A.R.K. Conference Spring 2014 14thTEACHERS PARK International Conference for Teachers of English March 29th 2014 arvičova 85, 602 00 rno CONFERENCE

are considering a classroom art which is far too valuable and versatile to be associated exclusively with one group alone. In this practical workshop, we will look at ways in which a short narrative can be used to generate a whole-class dialogue with language-learning opportunities along the way. Level: all levels Age: all ages Course type: General English

SEMINAR 11 – LOUEL ROSS CALLEJA P.A.R.K. School of English YOUR STUDENTS SAY THE RIGHT WORDS, BUT DO THEY SAY THEM RIGHT? Most teachers give short shrift to the teaching of pronunciation. But, come to think of it, isn't language primarily a phenomenon of sounds? Isn't our pronunciation the main thing people notice when we speak? We’ll be looking at some fun, practical, and effective strategies I've used to help my students overcome lingering pronunciation problems, which many teachers largely ignore. There's more to teaching pronunciation than just choral repetitions!

Level:all levels Age: all ages Course type: all types

SEMINAR 12 – JAMES PAGLIARO P.A.R.K. School of English HELPING LEARNERS WITH A, AN AND THE.

It’s a fact that in this part of the world, learners of all levels often use a, an, and the inaccurately. So what can we do to help them? This is a practical session that presents simple ideas and approaches which will help you train your learners to notice, understand and use articles. Level:all levels Age: all ages Course type: all types

Page 11: The P.A.R.K. Conference€¦ · The P.A.R.K. Conference Spring 2014 14thTEACHERS PARK International Conference for Teachers of English March 29th 2014 arvičova 85, 602 00 rno CONFERENCE

SEMINAR 13 – PŘEMEK ŠOUREK P.A.R.K. School of English HEY DUDE HOWS U? – INFORMAL ENGLISH AND HOW TO LEARN/TEACH IT Hey dude hows u? Yeah defo catch up sometime, remember u will av to show me round… Can’t get your head around language like this? And what about your students - will they succeed in a world where this is the norm? The language taught in the classroom often does not correspond to what is actually spoken by native speakers. With the use of authentic texts, this seminar will look into the different levels of informality in English, what the core features of informal register actually are, and how spelling and pronunciation are entwined. Also, some activities on teaching/understanding these language forms will be presented. Level: Intermediate, Upper-Intermediate, Advanced+ Age: Teens, Young Adults, Adults Course type: General English

SEMINAR 14 – DAVID KOSTER P.A.R.K. School of English DEALING WITH ERRORS When, what, and how should we correct? Dealing with errors is an important part of our job as a teacher and not always that straightforward. In this session, we will look at various ways of exploiting spoken and written errors in and outside the classroom. Level:all levels Age: Teens, Young adults, Adults, Mature Course type: all types
