THE COMMUNITY REJOICES The situation surrounding the birth of John the Baptist was not all that different from the one described above. Elizabeth and Zechariahs neighbors knew about the unusual circumstances of Elizabeths pregnancy (she was older and had been unable to conceive) and joyfully greeted the babys birth. The new baby was firmly rooted in his religious community. His parents observed the law of the covenant given to Abraham when they had him circumcised on the eighth day. They shared with everyone their sons special name, John, and Zechariah, who had been mute, immediately began to speak. The people were amazed and recognized that the Lords hand was on this special baby. The neighbors were also fearful, knowing that the life of Gods chosen is often difficult. We could ask about any infant, What will this child be?and imagine a world of possibilities. At the same time, we know that the gift of faith received in baptism and nurtured in families, neighborhoods, and parishes guarantees the greatest success of all—an eternal place in the reign of God. THE GIFT OF A CHILD

A sign goes up on the neighbor’s lawn: “Welcome Home Our New Baby Boy.” Bright balloons speak to the celebration. The neighborhood comes alive. One organizes a week of dinners for the mother and her family. Another collects for a month’s supply of diapers. The Great Plains Food Bank will be stopping in both Rugby and Towner on Thursday, June 28 with their Mobile Food Pantry. The Mobile Food Pantry consists of pre-packed shelf stable boxes, fresh produce, bakery items and usually one meat option. There is no pre-registration. Church, 503 1st St. SW, Towner. In the Gospel today, we celebrate the birth of John the Baptist and everyone pondered the question: “What, then, will this child be? For surely the hand of the Lord was with him.” In the past months “The hand of the Lord has been acting through you” as your gifts, to the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul brought his love and care to the poor by assisting three families, providing food and money for utilities and rent. Thank You! The St. Therese Conference of the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul book study will be June 28 at 7:00 PM in Dorothy’s Room. Wedding Banns: Father Tom has been meeting with Hannah Christenson and Scott Brossart who will be united in marriage on June 30, 2018. Mass on Wednesday, July 4, Independence Day, will be held at 9:00 AM at Little Flower. There will be no 5:00 PM Mass on Wednesday, July 4. Our “Little Way” of Faithful Stewardship Update. Within the next couple of weeks you will receive a summary report detailing the results of our increased offertory program. Several weeks ago we began this program. We are beginning to see signs that our Sunday offertory collections are growing through the generosity of many, many parishioners. Thank you so very much to all who have chosen to participate in this very important program. Your generosity shows your willingness as faithful stewards to be a part of the ongoing missions of Little Flower Catholic Church. Cemetery maintenance is greatly simplified by removing all flowers and other decorations not on the headstone. Anything left on the concrete base or in the lawn is subject to removal by cemetery personnel. Thank you for your cooperation in helping our loved ones’ final resting place looking its best.

Treasures from Our Tradition

It’s midsummer day! We have the advantage of celebrating one of the great hidden treasures of our liturgical calendar on a Sunday this year. There are only three “nativity” feasts on our calendar: for the Lord, the Blessed Mother (September 8), and today’s birth of the Baptist. Today’s date is anchored by the Annunciation (March 25), when Mary learns not only of her own child’s advent, but of Elizabeth’s child. We are exactly half a year away from Christmas Eve. There are strong traditions around this feast. Just as the winter solstice provides a rich vocabulary for Christmas, so does the abundance of light at midsummer inform this celebration. Just as at Christmas, a religious festival spills over into culture. As summer light reaches its peak, the sun-drenched zones of northern Europe see people staying up all night, lighting “St. John’s fires” in the long summer twilight. Bonfires seem to be the unifying force in all these celebrations, kindled along the shores of the St. Lawrence in Quebec and Montreal, with harbor illuminations in France. You may be most interested in the custom in San Juan, Puerto Rico, the Baptist’s own city. People there will leap into the sea between midnight and dawn to honor John. Why not find your way to a pool, a lake, or a sandy beach today and plunge in to recall your baptism? It’s a tradition! —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

It’s how we are called to live our lives twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week! It challenges us to live “God-centered” lives, not “self-centered” lives. Reflect on your daily activities, do you do them for the glory of God or for the glory of your own name?
