Fr. Rene’s Letter Dear Parishioners,
In the Sermon on the Mount our Lord Jesus acts as a new Moses, not as lawgiver but as a teacher, a guide who
shows the way to a life worthy of God and full of blessings. Today’s Matthean Gospel presents the Lord giving new
signposts for his disciples and all people through them to a life worth living. Clearly, his signposts go beyond the Ten
Commandments that God gave to his people on Mt. Sinai. They go beyond wrongful conduct, to the sources of evil
deeds which, arising from evil thoughts, manifest themselves in evil words and, eventually, to evil actions. Above all, he
draws attention to the spirit behind the law, which is love, and prescribes a cure that goes to the root. There are several areas in which the Lord Jesus makes clear his new signposts. While it is not simply enough to
abstain from physical killing, he insists that a disciple has to recognize and need to combat the common killing that takes
place in the heart—the thoughts of hate, the displeasure at another person, the character assassination, which express
themselves in spiteful, wound causing, harmful words. Very understandably, he asserts that the key to a good marital
relationship is the loving and constant trust between husbands and wives, and not simply the avoidance of adultery—
which begins with the lust of the eyes, then, goes to the heart, disdaining marriage. He equally insists on having not only
a good prudent judgment—a healthy, dependable sense of right and wrong, but also strong convictions that immediately
overpower temptation’s initial movement. Our Lord’s new road signs demands obedience of faith. Obeying his commands simply to avoid punishment, or to
keep oneself out of trouble, is purely egoistic. But obeying them from an upright heart—loving God, walking in his ways,
heeding his voice, holding fast to him— leads to a life worthy of God and his infinite blessings. This is life! Are you willing
to choose it? Congratulations to all our First Communion young disciples for learning the Act of Contrition, and our special thanks
to parish catechists who prepared them very well. Also, many thanks to Joe Conlangi for providing the lights to the outside statue of our Blessed Mother, and to Jose and Freddie, our maintenance crew, for their patient and wonderful labor.
The 2017 Catholic ministries Appeal (CMA) officially begins this weekend in our parish. This annual appeal enables
us a parish Church to be involved and engaged in Christ’s mission. It funds not only religious education, vocations, housing for the disadvantaged, food distribution programs, outreach ministries, the homeless and the homebound, but also our own parish. Last year, your profound generosity merited our parish $20,700 dollars. As I, your pastor, deeply thank you, I also encourage you to support this year’s appeal. With our school kitchen renovation work done, we now look forward to expanding our pantry program. Right now, it calls for a bigger space and greater accessibility.
Our new bishop, Most Rev. John Barres, will meet with the pastors and priests of the North Hempstead Deanery, our
deanery, on February 22nd
, at St. Mary’s Church in Manhasset. Prior to the clergy meeting, he will celebrate the 5:00PM. If you’re moved by the Spirit, come and join him at this Eucharistic celebration and have the opportunity to meet him.
For this Lent 2017, we have two planned spiritual growth sessions: April 10, Holy Monday, Lenten Recollection
(9AM-3PM) by Fr. Kenan Peters; every Monday of Lent (March 6, 13, 20, 27, April 3), Biblical Study/Reflection on the Passion of Christ according to St. Matthew (7:30PM, Social Hall) by Fr. Rene. Please mark your calendars.
And finally, a lady in her early 70’s walks into a bank in New York City and asks for the loan officer. She says she's
going to Europe on business for two weeks and needs to borrow $5,000. The bank officer says the bank will need some kind of security for such a loan, so the lady hands over the keys to a new Rolls Royce parked on the street in front of the bank. Everything checks out, and the bank agrees to accept the car as collateral for the loan. An employee drives the Rolls into the bank's underground garage and parks it there. Two weeks later, the lady returns, repays the $5,000 and the interest, which comes to $15.41. The loan officer says, "We are very happy to have had your business, and this transaction has worked out very nicely, but we are a little puzzled. While you were away, we checked you out and found that you are a multimillionaire. What puzzles us is why would you bother to borrow $5,000?" The lady replied, "Where else in New York can I park my car for two weeks for 15 bucks?"
Peace!
Fr. Rene

“To walk in the light is to have a daily commitment to living out a righteous life…”
- Pope Francis
Your CMA gift supports the education of our spiritual leaders, changing the lives of those called to serve, and chang-ing the lives of those with whom these leaders will share and strengthen our Catholic faith. Ordained in June of 2016, Fr. Jiha Lim heard the call to serve as a priest when he was an altar boy at his parish in South Korea. At ten, Fr. Lim and his family moved to Long Island. His desire to be a priest continued to grow, and with the support of his family and the priests that mentored him, he entered the Seminary.
“Now as a priest in our Diocese, and Associate Pastor at St. Mary in Manhasset, my goal is to bring joy and hope to the people of God – and to reach out to others who are discerning becoming priests in our Diocese – to walk with them on their journey as other priests walked with me on mine.”
