Second Sunday in Ordinary Time January 18–19, 2020

A Note from Our Pastor,

As mentioned at our Masses last weekend and as you can read below, in anticipation of our Parish’s Centennial in 2022 we are conducting a planning study to address some fiscal needs

of our parish. We are hoping to receive input on this mat-ter from as many parishioners as possible. This is only one part, but a very important part, of marking our Centennial in two years time. The Parish Pastoral Council is begin-ning the planning stages of a variety of spiritual and social events to celebrate our Centennial. Of course, we all want to get this right. It is highly unlikely that any of us will be around for our Parish’s Bicentennial in 2122!

As I mentioned last week, this is currently the week of Prayer for Unity among Christians. Let us ask our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ to guide us all in recognizing the gift of Christian faith and baptism that all Christians share, and in our efforts to bring the principles of Christ’s Gospel to bear in our society: especially amid the variety of threats to human life on so many levels, particularly among the most innocent and vulnerable; in the face of frightening challenges to world peace; and to come to the aid of those in our midst who are in need and who are ne-glected or discriminated against by others.

Tomorrow being the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Holi-day, there will be just one daily Mass in our chapel—at 8am. In addition, the Milton Interfaith Clergy Association is honored to collaborate once again with the Milton Public and Parochial Schools, including our own St. Agatha School, to present our annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Me-morial Celebration on Monday, January 20th at 6:30pm at the Concord Baptist Church, 180 Blue Hill Avenue. The sanctuary will once again be adorned with creative works by students of our public and parochial schools in image and word exploring this year’s theme: The Challenge of Change. All parishioners are warmly invited to this service.

Beginning this Tuesday January 21st after the 9am Mass and continuing for the next 2 Tuesdays our Pastoral Asso-ciate Lisa Gulino will be leading a discussion of Matthew Kelly’s book Rediscover the Saints which was distributed at our Christmas Eve and Christmas Day Masses. Come and share your insights and deepen your faith!

On Wednesday January 22nd we mark the 47th Anniversary of the Supreme Court’s Roe vs. Wade decision which le-galized abortion in our country. There are 2 local opportu-nities to share in a Holy Hour for Life, Forgiveness, and Healing—on Wednesday the 22nd at 6:30pm at Sacred Heart Church in North Quincy, and on Wednesday the 29th at St. Elizabeth’s Church in Milton.

Our 6th, 7th, and 8th grade Edge Program will resume this Thursday from 6:30 to 8pm.

Please pray for the youngsters in our Faith Formation Pro-gram and in St. Agatha School who will be celebrating the Sacrament of Reconciliation for the first time here on Sat-urday the 25th at 11am and 1pm. May their experience in receiving the loving forgiveness of God in this Sacrament draw them and their families ever closer to our merciful Savior Jesus Christ.

Finally, as our parish enters Disciples in Mission and em-barks upon the ALPHA program, all are invited to detach the Prayer to the Holy Spirit which you can find on the “Sacred Pause” page of this bulletin, and pray it regularly for both these important initiatives of our parish.

Have a blessed week!

Fr. Palardy

Planning Study to Begin

Father Palardy and our parish leadership would like to make you aware of a parish-wide Planning Study to formu-late a strategy for addressing some needs we have at the parish in anticipation of our Centennial celebration in 2022. This includes completing the funding for the preservation work done to the exterior of our beautiful Church and begin-ning restoration work on our church organ. Additionally, we are also considering establishing an endowment fund for innovative outreach and pastoral programs for both youth and adults. We would also like to update the technology at our school.

Careful consideration and thoughtful planning are required for us to take this step. This is why feedback from our pa-rishioners is of the utmost importance at this time. Your opinions and suggestions will enable us to form a final plan that will help meet the needs of our entire parish.

During the next several weeks, you will be asked to take part in a study process to be conducted by Cornerstone Fundraising, a professional religious fundraising firm. Mem-bers of the Cornerstone team will be conducting one-on-one personal interviews with randomly selected families and individuals of the parish, parish-wide focus groups, and an on-line survey.

Please make every effort to participate in the survey pro-cess so that we may complete this study with your open and honest input.

Focus Groups

Wednesday, February 5th after the 7:00 AM and 9:00 AM Daily Masses

Thursday, February 6th at 1:00 PM and 7:00 PM

Tuesday, February 18th at 1:00 PM and 7:00 PM

Focus Groups will be held at the church and are open to all parishioners.

Please select a date and time that is most convenient for you.

Thank you for your continued support.

THEME: God’s plan in Christ begins to unfold in human history.

As you listen to this familiar story again today, what one word or thought really struck you? What image do you take away from this reading?

Gospel : John 1:29-34

John the Baptist saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world. He is the one of whom I said, ‘A man is coming after me who ranks ahead of me because he existed before me.’ I did not know him, but the reason why I came baptizing with water was that he might be made known to Israel.” John testified further, saying, “I saw the Spirit come down like a dove from heaven and remain upon him. I did not know him, but the one who sent me to baptize with water told me, ‘On whomever you see the Spirit come down and remain, he is the one who will baptize with the Holy Spirit.’ Now I have seen and testified that he is the Son of God.”

Pastoral Planning

January 19 ~ Second Sunday in Ordinary Time In today’s gospel, John the Baptist testifies that Jesus is the Son of God. Our faith and Sacred Scripture confirm this for us—Jesus is the Son of God. Pray today’s Psalm with an open heart and open mind: “Here am I, Lord; I come to do your will.” What is God’s will for us—for you? It is to speak the name of Jesus and tell of His work in your life. It is Jesus’ will that you make disciples. Not everyone will do this the same way. Ask for the grace to find the best way you can to testify—talk about—Jesus.

Certain things seem to happen with regularity each year at this time. Usually the weather has turned cold and we’re looking forward excitedly to the Patriots charging into the Super bowl yet again. This year, however, we had the warmest January day ever recorded in Boston and the Pa-triots were eliminated in the very first round. But one thing that has not changed—although we all probably wish it would—is the onset of tax season! As we do each year, to help you prepare, we will be sending out Annual Contribu-tion Statements that will include any Weekly Offertory or Special Collection contributions made using our envelope system, contributions to the Grand Annual Appeal and any contributions made to specific projects such as the Tower Restoration Fund. If you made contributions to the Weekly Offertory or Special Collections using a loose check with-out a Giving Envelope, those are not included in the state-ment. Since these are mailed out, please make sure the Parish Office has been notified of any address changes since last year so you receive your statement in a timely manner. Although we expect to have the statements out by the end of the month, they may be a bit later than usual because the Archdiocese mandated a new software system which we have not used for annual statements in the past.

Father Palardy, in his column for Christmas day, shared that we have a new initiative starting on Wednesday, March 4, 2020 called ALPHA. ALPHA gatherings are based on hospitality, sharing and open conversation, and allow us together to encounter Jesus as friend and Lord. The ALPHA talks are designed to engage people from all walks of life and inspire conversation. ALPHA explores:

the big issues of life and faith

unpacks the basics of Christian belief,

addresses questions like “Who is Jesus?”, “Why and how do I pray?” and “How does God guide us?”

We are called to see life through the lens of faith and to sharpen our spiritual vision. ALPHA is an initiative allow-ing us to get in touch with our spiritual side—an oppor-tunity to learn from others—and a fun way to explore the questions we often “Google” because deep down we know we search for answers to all types of life’s ques-tions. God created us to search and wonder, ponder and seek—it is in our DNA to do so!

To help successfully launch ALPHA a committee has been formed—in the weeks ahead you will be hearing from our priests and fellow parishioners about ALPHA. This commit-tee met with people from ALPHA who gave us tips for a cre-ating a “strategic” plan. We were told that we need to have people praying now for our efforts and to have a concert-ed effort to ask God to bless this ministry and our parish.

Our efforts are being supported by a wonderful and integral group of parishioners—our homebound parishioners—who have personally pledged and have already started to pray for this initiative and for all of us! We owe these folks a debt of gratitude for their years of building a strong foundation for our parish and their continued support of our parish’s mission through prayer. Thank you!

Would you please join in praying for our parish and pa-rishioners that the year 2020 is a year of discovery—of God’s presence in our daily life and new found under-standing of the Scriptures and Sacraments of the Church. Today’s first reading highlights what it means when we come to know the Lord: “I am made glorious in the sight of the LORD, and my God is now my strength!” Faith matters—God’s love is a personal love which is to be lived and strengthened through the community found in the Catholic Church.

Will you commit to praying the prayer for this Parish’s efforts and a new time of discovery of our Catholic Faith?

You donate a week of your time and you receive a healthy dose of work and laughter. The high school kids you lead will make you proud to the point of tears, with their energy and kindness.

The West Virginia residents will welcome you with sincere warmth and hospitality. You will live and work with other St. Agatha parents, who are promoting strong charitable values. At the end of the week, you will be exhausted but thrilled that you made a difference for people in need.
