Committees
The PCC operates in the main through full meetings of its members. As required by law there
is a Standing Committee which meets regularly in order to transact the business of the PCC,
subject to any direction given by the Council. Formal committees have been constituted to
direct and administer particular interests of the Council as follows:
LSM’s missionary work at home and abroad
Management of an annual Christian Giving Review
Social Responsibility
Administration of the Music Fund
The Friends’ of Little St Mary’s
Welcome Committee
Social events
Building and Maintenance
In addition, informal groups have been set up to:
represent work with children at LSM
organise the Summer Festival
maintain the churchyard garden
reflect on LSM’s work with the homeless and in particular the church’s
participation in the Cambridge Churches Homeless Project
ensure that health and safety standards are met in the kitchen
and Parish Centre, particularly with regard to lettings
facilitate payment of bills etc. during quinquennial building work
Two members of the congregation represent the parish on Churches Together in the centre of
Cambridge.
Church Electoral Roll – Susan Coote
187 members, of whom 9 are resident in the parish. During the year 12 new names have been
added; 31 removed (6 have died, 1 has been ordained, 24 have moved away). A net decrease
of 19 since the 2017 APCM.
Review of the Year
The PCC met six times during the year; committees and groups met between PCC meetings,
reporting discussions and making recommendations to the Council.
The particular objectives for 2018/19 remained unchanged from last year and discussion during
the year focussed upon them, namely: to develop a ministry for the Parish Centre for both the
Church and the wider community; work with children and young people; corporate prayer, and
welcome. In addition, there was ongoing discussion relating to poverty and homelessness in
Cambridge.
Churchwardens’ Report on the Fabric, Goods and Ornaments of the Church
After another busy year at Little St Mary’s (LSM) we wish to highlight the following
achievements.
It was a delight to worship in the completed Lady Chapel last Easter after the long
refurbishment period and continues to provide a quiet space for contemplation as well as the
services which are ongoing.
Prior to Lent this year we had the culmination of the work and appeal to provide the inspiring
and enhanced Stations of the Cross which are dedicated to the memory of Rev Dr John Hughes
loyal friend and supporter of LSM. These were blessed in a moving service conducted by the
Bishop of Ely. The Cardozo Kindersley Workshop did not disappoint with the quality of their
design and workmanship.
At LSM we no longer have to struggle to hear the services. The new sound enhancement
system has brought us into the 21st century in this respect. The sound link between the church
and parish centre has been restored. This work has made us think about projecting the services
into the Parish Centre visually to help parents who are in the creche.
We are pleased to report that the problem of the pigeon fouling between LSM and Peterhouse
have been solved by the installation of spikes to all horizontal surfaces in the affected area.
This was facilitated by the great cooperation of Peterhouse who organised the work.
The camomile lawn has not responded to nurturing and a decision has been made to replace
this with decorative gravelling. The necessary faculty has been obtained and the work will be
carried out this year in conjunction with the installation of a gate which will limit the
thoroughfare but not prevent those bereaved persons having access to this area where ashes
have been interred.
We have also received a faculty and quote for upgrading the drainage system around the south
and east sides of the church.
The parish centre was redecorated after Easter. In order to fulfil the requirements of Health
and Safety it was necessary to replace the ailing domestic dishwasher in the Parish Centre with
a catering quality one.
The South Porch has been cleared to provide the necessary fire escape during services.
A small band of volunteer gardeners have achieved an amazing clearance of weed and
undergrowth providing better access for all to enjoy the garden. Their work is highly valued
and we know they would appreciate more helpers with this ongoing task. Looking to the future
there is a need to consider a larger area in the garden for the congregation to assemble after
services during fine weather, close to the Parish Centre.
The churchwardens are indebted to so many people and we could not possibly list them all here
for fear of omitting someone who is highly valued. However, we are sure no one would object
to us mentioning Jo Wibberley, the deputy warden who provides amazing back-up for us in all
that she does in relation to health and safety, maintenance, and many other tasks.
Also, during this year, we have had the benefit of the competent work provided by Emma
Bourne as the Administrative Assistant. As she prepares to move on, we are now looking to
appoint a new person for this role from July and advertisements will be placed shortly.
It is an honour to serve as churchwardens at LSM and we would like to thank Fr Robert for his
continued support and counselling as we endeavour to carry out our duties for the benefit of
the parish.
Janet Nevitt and Adrian Savin
Music Report
It has been another extraordinarily busy year for the Choir at Little St Mary’s, and once again
I am delighted to report the consistently high standards that the choir maintains throughout the
church’s year, singing High Mass every Sunday and contributing choral music to the worship
at every red letter feast day of the Church’s calendar as well. We have recruited a number of
singers this year among the adults and the children—for the first time since I arrived at Little
St Mary’s, I can report we have more boy probationers than girls, which will help us to maintain
a good balance among the choristers in future years. The Choristers have performed on a
number of occasions in their own right—singing for the now traditional Christingle service at
Trinity College, and for the Nativity Service at St George’s Six Mile Bottom. Last Summer,
the choristers also joined forces with my other choir at Peterhouse to raise the roof in a
performance of Finzi’s Ascensiontide anthem God is gone up, and were hosted for dinner in
Upper Hall afterwards. The combined voices of the Parish Choir and Girton Musical Theatre,
joined by a number of come-and-singers, provided some rollicking Gilbert & Sullivan
entertainment at Gift Day in a Come-and-Sing performance of The Pirates of Penzance –
which included memorable solos from Edward Bellett-Travers as the pattering Major General,
Geoffrey Howe as the Pirate King, and Chessie Nour as Mabel.
In addition to its usual commitments, it was a particular honour to provide music for the service
on St David’s Day, dedicating the new Stations of the Cross in memory of Fr John Hughes.
Thanks to the generosity of the Music Fund, which helped to fund the commissioning of a new
piece of music in memory of Fr John, we were privileged to be able to perform Into the other
city, with words written specially for the occasion by Bishop Rowan Williams, set to music by
one of the leading contemporary composers of our day, Matthew Martin. It is a striking and
moving work, and one which I hope will find a place in the repertoire both at Little St Mary’s
and further afield.
I am hugely grateful for the work of a number of people, who help me with the musical
provision here at Little St Mary’s: Tricia Davies continues to help with the administrative side
of the role, and to look after the Choristers; Mary Ward and Bob De Wolf, who run our
wonderful Junior Choir (see below for the Junior Choir Report); and Alex Coplan (our Assistant Organist) and Sarah MacDonald (our Honorary Associate Organist), who help with
matters musical. And, as ever, I am hugely grateful to the LSM congregation more widely for
being so supportive of the music. Without your financial contributions, we couldn’t do what
we do; but more importantly, it is a real joy to know that so many of you care about the music,
and that the choir’s contribution to the worship of the services at LSM is held in such high
regard by so many of you. Many thanks.
Dr Simon Jackson, Director of Music
Social Responsibility Group
Throughout the year, we have met as a group to discuss ways in which we can continue to
support the following groups, through prayer, financial aid and our own personal involvement.
The following report gives an up to date account of our work.
Cambridge Churches Homeless Project
LSM hosted CCHP every Tuesday night (excepting Christmas) in December and January,
providing a warm welcome, hot meal and a safe warm space to sleep in in the church and Parish
Centre. The half way point report (written by the Core Team at the end of January) gives a
clear overview.
This winter, eleven churches and one synagogue provide our shelter for the night, and we give
thanks that, so far, we have been able to house an average of 14-15 homeless guests. Some of
our guests are well known from previous years, others are new to the project. One encouraging
development is that several men, who were our guests last year, have now moved on into more
settled accommodation.
This year we have accommodated several women as well as the men, in recognition of the
increasing number of women on the streets in Cambridge. We pray that we can give all our
guests a good welcome and a safe, warm and secure place to sleep over the cold winter months.
The recent death of one man, Sebastian, who had been accommodated by the project in
previous years was a sombre reminder of the need for the project.
CCHP would be not possible without our volunteers. We have only 2 part-time paid staff, the
rest is done by volunteers. This year we have had over 170 new volunteers, which is amazing.
However, it has been a challenge to co-ordinate the rotas with so many different people. We
give thanks for the co-ordinators who put the rotas together. The lead cooks have also had
additional responsibilities – environmental health requirements mean that we have to have a
complete list of all ingredients in each item on the night’s menu. The cooks have risen
magnificently to the challenges and produced satisfying meals in a variety of kitchens.
Please continue to pray for the smooth running of the project which operates until 31st March.
Pray also that it may be possible to help our guests to move on to more settled homes and work.
Mary Ward, Cape Town
Jimmy’s
“Jimmy's continues to serve a growing number of homeless people in Cambridge. We are
currently awaiting the outcome of our negotiations with the county council about our contract
to provide the Assessment Centre. Our current contract runs out at the end of March but the
council are not ready to retender it.
Instead they have extended it for two months while they decide what to do. They need to save
money and want to offer the contract for less if at all. They want to revise the finances for all
homeless provision but they have not done an impact assessment and are under pressure to
limit their cuts. Whitworth House is attracting their attention so Jimmy's will wait to see what
they will offer us.
We plan to continue and develop our other services (move on houses and support services) and
are grateful for excellent volunteer and donor support which reduces our dependence on this
one contract.
We have had a very harmonious and successful SWEP (Severe Weather Emergency Provision)
season. We have had less cold weather this year but what we did have come in one long bout.
The collaboration with the Salvation Army was excellent and it went really well.
Collaboration with statutory services and other charities to help homeless people is developing.
We all have to pull together to give homeless people the best chance of a settled and meaningful
life.”
Dr Fiona Blake, Chair of Trustees
Whitworth Trust
LSM has continued to support Whitworth Trust (which supports vulnerable women and victims
of domestic abuse) over the past year. The Sleep Out in January was a great success, raising
over £12, 000 for Whitworth Trust and CamCRAG, including Gift Aid. We have adopted
Whitworth Trust as the as our Lent Appeal as it is currently under threat from a lack of council
funding.
The House was founded after a funding campaign driven by Ann Whitworth and a committee
of other local people over 20 years ago. It is a hostel which is now threatened with closure. In
January, Orwell Housing Association – who own and manage the House – announced that
Cambridge County Council had notified them that they would be ceasing their funding for the
service in June, as part of a larger strategic review of housing-related services in the County.
In light of these funding cuts from the Council (£65,000 per annum), Orwell explained that
they could see no alternative other than to close the house and sell the property.
However, due to the strength of public opinion and pressure (as expressed both through the
petition set up by the residents of Whitworth House, which currently stands at over 45,000
signatures and also the Open Letter to the Council written by trustees of the Whitworth Trust)
the Council appear to be rethinking their proposal. The Council are open to dialogue over the
proposed funding cuts. Ruth had a constructive meeting on the 14th March with Orwell
Housing, councillors and Chris Jenkin of CCHP where ways forward were discussed. The
meeting was reminded of the unique nature of the House as a refuge for women, and the
strength of public feeling. It was felt that Whitworth deserved a second chance. Time is of the
essence, as there is a review in May and we are currently waiting for the outcome of the
extension.
Dr Ruth Jackson Chair of Trustees
Medaille Trust
LSM continues to support the Medaille Trust, both prayerfully and financially, and also by
attending the yearly Medaille Charity Concert, where City Centre Churches combine to raise
money for the Medaille Trust. The Medaille Trust provides safe homes across the UK for both
male and female victims of human trafficking.

Forum Lunch and Friends of Fulbourn Hospital and Community
In 2018 LSM Forum Lunch continued to provide a monthly mid-day meal and entertainment
for our members and their carers. Talks during 2018 included such diverse topic as "The
Sundials of Cambridge", "The Impressionists through the seasons" and "Building Ely
Cathedral" while musical entertainment included carolling by members of the University
Chorus.
The lunch operates in relation to Friends of Fulbourn Hospital and Community. Funds collected
over and above the cost of cooking go to the Friends. In 2018, half the cost of the new
dishwasher was contributed by the Friends, who continue to support the lunch with other
expenses as well as helping to keep links open with mental healthcare specialists. Forum's
referral form and fliers (for sharing with referring organizations) were updated during the year
with the help of the Friends. Bob DeWolf has joined the Friends as Trustee.
Christina Rowland-Jones of the Friends in particular has helped in putting us in touch with
interesting speakers. Christine Tipple and Bob DeWolf form the core Forum team and call
upon a pool of around 10 cooks to provide the lunch, all of whom are due great thanks for
serving up a varied and delicious meals. A larger group of helpers - mostly from the LSM
congregation - come to set up, welcome and enjoy the meal with our members and carers, and
to serve up. Thanks to all who help with this event.
Bob DeWolf
Cambridge City Foodbank
We continue to collect items for the Foodbank, both regularly (in the blue box in the parish
Centre. ) and also, at Christmas and Harvest. We respond to appeals on the website for foods
currently needed, and we also give financially on a regular basis.
CamTrust
CamTrust is a Histon based charity providing ‘specialist training and education for adults with
learning difficulties and physical disabilities.’ LSM continues to support CamTrust financially,
and when possible, we try to use Camtrust’s printing services.
Over the past year, Helen Medlock has put on several very well supported concerts, which have
raised over £12,000. The next concert is on the 12th May at Cottenham Church.
Cambridge Central Aid is an organisation which will quickly provide essential goods to
help vulnerable local individuals and families in crisis with small grants for basic necessities.
In the past year, 755 grants totalling £91,000 were provided. The report states that ‘most
typically help goes to someone leaving hospital or institution care and moving into unfurnished
council accommodation and in desperate need of basic furniture and white goods.’ The report
concludes that ‘we see no reduction in the pressures which result in people need our help.’
LSM gives financially to Cambridge Central Aid
Mary Ward, Cape Town
Junior Choir. 2018
The Junior Choir continues to grow in numbers and it is always very good to welcome new
families to Little St Mary’s. Most recently, children joined the choristers to sing Simon’s Mass
Setting on Mothering Sunday, and the children themselves chose the Offertory Proper ‘Give
me Joy in my Heart, Keep Me Praising.’
Over the course of last year, we have met regularly and as well as singing our favourite songs,
and learning new songs, both sacred and secular, we have observed the church’s calendar. The
children take part on the Children’s Stations of the Cross on Good Friday, and they sing a
special song on Harvest Sunday. They are encouraged to attend the Children’s service on
Christmas Eve as well as attending all the great festivals.
I would like to thank the families for their loyalty and commitment to the choir. It has been
lovely to welcome younger siblings and friends every Friday. Thank you too to our helpers.

Cambridge South Deanery Synod
The synod has met on 3 occasions since our last APCM. The Rural Dean has ensured that the
Synods are enjoyable and that members are given information on relevant local topics. We
began the year in June with a joint meeting with Cambridge North Deanery. A talk on the
workings of General Synod was given by our clerical representative, Canon Nick Moir, vicar
of St Andrew’s Chesterton. The Revd Jon Canessa spoke of his work among the homeless in
Cambridge and on the new estates in the railway station area in the parish of St Paul’s Hills
Road where he serves part-time as curate.
Our Deanery agreed to provide the Revd Jon Canessa £18,000 over the next 3 years as part of
his salary. £40,000 is needed each year for 3 years.
In October the Synod heard about the work done locally by Christian Aid; and by the Children’s
Society.
The Revd Rachel Nicholls, a former curate of St Bene’t’s was re-appointed for a further 3-year
term as a trustee for the Church Schools in Cambridge. The charity, known as The Old Schools,
(Charity No. 311326) owns 4 schools: Park Street, St Luke’s, St Paul’s, and St Philip’s – and
has a quarter interest in St Bede’s, Cherry Hinton.
The Synod is desirous of appointing a new Hon Secretary following the retirement of Lucy
McKitterick.
Richard Morgan, Deanery Lay Chairman
Ely Diocesan Synod
The Synod has met on 3 occasions since our last APCM. In June we held our last Synod of the
triennium at Witchford College.
The Bishop of Ely paid tribute to Shirley Dex who was retiring after 43 years. He said of
Shirley: “Here we have an extraordinary example of living service – I don’t know anybody
who can offer such continuity of service and such faithfulness and loyalty to the Church and
its Mission, and to have done so with such modesty but determination and perseverance.
Shirley, we salute you!”
On the Feast of the Assumption Fr Robert presented Shirley with a framed photograph of the
Archbishop of Canterbury who had written “Shirley, thank you for your life of service to Christ,
+Justin Cantuar”
Following elections Fr Robert, Fr Gregory, Sheila Bennett, Richard Morgan, and Jo Wibberley
were elected to serve as members of Diocesan Synod for the next 3 years.
Richard Morgan
General Synod
Since our last APCM I have attended Synods in York and Westminster and I have given a talk
on the work of General Synod to Fincham & Feltwell Deanery in Downham Market last
November.
My reports were circulated earlier so there is no need to republish them here but if you haven’t
received a copy I am happy to let you have one.

Joan was one our longest-serving members of the congregation, having
first worshipped here in the 1950s. We last saw Joan in church in the autumn and since then
she had been receiving Holy Communion at the Manor Care Home where she lived. She took
a marked decline and received the Last Rites on the Saturday before she died, holding out long
enough to see her son, Paul, arrive from America. She died peacefully the next day, Sunday
25th November, aged 95. Due to family commitments in the United States her funeral Mass
was delayed until now. We keep her sons Nick and Paul and their families in our prayers and,
of course, Joan herself. Joan was a stalwart of the faith and we commend her to Almighty God
with great trust and confidence. May she rest in peace.
