June is the month of the Devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. It is a wonderful historical expression of the Church’s love for Christ. It calls for a conversion, love, and reparation to Christ.

This Sunday we have a wonderful event that helps us grow in our devotion to the Sacred Heart—Cross the Bridge for Life. Check out the details below right and please join us if you can!

Amen? Amen.

JUNE 2, 2019

THE SACRED HEART OF JESUS

Sat. june 15 5-11 PM

On Sunday, June 2, starting at 1 PM, thousands of people from the tri-state area will join together for the annual CROSS THE BRIDGE FOR LIFE. Participants of all ages will demonstrate support for protection for all human life from conception to natural death with a peaceful walk

across the “Purple People Bridge” spanning the Ohio River.Festivities begin at the Newport festival site on the river at the base of

the Purple People Bridge. Knights of Columbus, Hibernians, priests and seminarians will lead the walk after a brief program at 2 PM. There will be food trucks with items for sale before and after event, free t-shirts while they last ($5 donation appreciated to help defray cost), music by Easter Rising Band at the festival site, along with face painters and balloon artists for children. No signs of any kind permitted for this event. Join us and celebrate the gift that is LIFE.

There will be a regional mission appeal the weekend of June 29-30 by a representative of the Missionary Congregation of the Evangelizing Sisters of Mary. The con-gregation was founded in Uganda and has many missions in Africa, but is also now working in Europe, the U.S., and in Cuba. There will be a second collection that week-end for their missionary work. We ask you to be as generous as you can. Thank you!

CEMETERY CLEAN-UP: St. Anthony parishioners teamed up with some other neighborhood volunteers to clean up the Civil War-era St. Michael Cemetery on Settle Road in Madisonville (photos 1-2). 1 GRADUATES BLESSED: Fr. Jacob offered a blessing for gradu-ates Marie Schneider (University of Cincinnati) and Lanna DeBow (Ursuline Academy) at St. Anthony on Sunday (photo 3). If you have a student that is graduating from high school or college this year, please share a photo for the Pastor’s Ramblings. Email it to Marta at [email protected]. 1 2019 ORDINATION: This year’s ordination to the priesthood Mass for the largest class in 40 years (photo 4) was one of the most beautiful I’ve ever been a part of. It was so encouraging to see all of these new priests take their vows and to hear about the 17 new seminarians coming in next year! Please keep all of these men in your prayers. 1 WELCOME, CHILDREN OF GOD: Welcome James Edward Coomer, son of Bobby and Melanie Coomer (photo 5). And, welcome Lucy Jean Miller, daughter of Matthew and Shannon Miller (photo 6). Both were baptized by Monsignor Lane at St. Cecilia on May 19.

SUMMER WITH THE SAINTSVenerable Pierre Toussaint

Born in modern-day Haiti and brought to New York City as a slave, Pierre died a free man, a renowned hairdresser, and one of New York City’s most well-known Catholics.

Plantation owner Pierre Bérard made Toussaint a house slave and allowed his grand-mother to teach her grandson how to read and write. In his early 20s, Pierre, his younger sister, his aunt, and two other house slaves accompanied their master’s son to New York City because of political unrest at home. Apprenticed to a local hairdresser, Pierre learned the trade quickly and eventually worked very successfully in the homes of rich women in New York City.

When his master died, Pierre was determined to support himself, his master’s widow, and the other house slaves. He was freed shortly before the widow’s death in 1807.

Four years later, he married Marie Rose Juliette, whose freedom he had purchased. They later adopted Euphémie, his orphaned niece. Both preceded Pierre in death. He attended daily Mass at St. Peter’s Church on Barclay Street, the same parish that Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton had attended.

Pierre donated to various charities, generously assisting blacks and whites in need. He and his wife opened their home to or-phans and educated them. The couple also nursed abandoned people who were suffering from yellow fever. Urged to retire and en-joy the wealth he had accumulated, Pierre responded, “I have enough for myself, but if I stop working I have not enough for others.”

Pierre originally was buried outside St. Patrick’s Old Cathedral, where he was once refused entrance because of his race. His sanctity and the popular devotion to him caused his body to be moved to the present location of St. Patrick’s Cathedral on Fifth Avenue. Pierre Toussaint was declared Venerable in 1996.

Marriage Annulments The Catholic Church dedicates much time and effort to prepare couples for marriage. However, despite the couples’ best efforts, unfortunately a marriage union sometimes fails to reach fulfillment for both parties and may end in a civil divorce. The Catholic Church has mechanisms and processes in place to assist people in these situations, especially if they anticipate another marriage.

If you find yourself in this circumstance, we would like to help. To learn more about how to get assistance, please contact Joe Fondacaro in our pastoral region at 871-5757, ext. 222, or at [email protected]. All inquiries are kept in strict confidence.
