Two weeks ago, this letter talked about the
youngsters of the parish who had made their First
Communion, and about the road that they have
set out on towards becoming compassionate and
caring persons and full members of the Body of
Christ. I know that all our parents want to be
proactive in this process, and attach great
importance to it, yet sometimes I believe we go
about it in the wrong way.
Studies have shown repeatedly that when adults
behave selfishly, children follow suit, even when
they are encouraged to act generously. We have
all said to our children; “Actions speak louder
than words.” Children know this exquisitely and
intuitively. When the adults around them act
generously and compassionately, studies show that
children acted in the same way, whether
generosity or selflessness was preached to them or
not.
In other words, children learn generosity and
caring and compassion not by listening to what
their parents, teachers or religious figures are
telling them, but by observing what they do. In
fact, these studies record that the most generous
and kind and compassionate children were those
who watched their parents and/or teacher give, or
act compassionately but say nothing.
The message is very clear for parents, as well as
for those of us who are cast in the role of
preachers: If we don’t model generosity, caring
and compassion, preaching it may not help in the
short run, and in the long run, preaching is less
effective that doing while saying nothing.

Mother’s Day Tea with Mom The St. Catharine School classrooms were filled with moms last week. The PreK and kindergarten students invited their mothers for a very special Mother’s Day Tea to show them just how special they are. In Mrs. Ford's PreK classroom, students baked treats and served iced tea and lemonade to their moms. Mrs. Nelson's kindergarten students, dressed in their fancy clothes, shared stories about their mothers, sang songs and presented them with a special handmade gift (priceless!) It was a day our SCS moms will never forget!

Students Prove Catholic Schools
Can Do It All
On April 29th, St. Catharine School students participated in Bishop O’Connell's second annual Catholic Schools Day of Service. Along with nearly 9,000 K-8 students across Burlington, Mercer, Monmouth and Ocean Counties, the students proved that Catholic schools really can do it all!
Pre K through 8th grade students participated in projects around the Spring Lake community. Students hosted a breakfast for our first responders, cleaned up Divine Park and the Brown Avenue dunes, performed yard work around the convent and school grounds, wrote cards to our homebound Parishioners and letters to our troops. Even our youngest Pre K students got into the action by cleaning desks in the classrooms. It seems showing appreciation and giving back to the community are lessons you really can learn in school..
This month we are collecting for the Sisters of St. Catharine who minister in this Parish. The two communities that currently serve in the Parish are the Sisters of Charity of St. Elizabeth and the Sisters of Mercy of the Americas. Please use the pink envelopes in the pew and return it during the month of May. Thank you for your generosity in advance. Please be as generous as you can at this time. We will remember you in our prayers, The Sisters of St. Catharine

Music Ministry News
We continue our series of preludes and postludes this week, the Feast of the Holy Trinity. The following notes refer to the prelude/postlude at the 4pm, 9am, and 11:30 Masses.
Prelude: Prelude in E-flat, BWV 552/1. J. S. Bach (1685-1750)
Postlude: Fugue in E-flat, BWV 552/2
Today's prelude and postlude are the only organ prelude and fugue published during Bach's lifetime, in the volume Clavier-Ubung III ("third volume for keyboard-training"). Published in 1739, in these pieces Bach is demonstrating his mastery of every contemporary keyboard style, and his interest in depicting theology in music. In the prelude, with its three distinct motives, we can discern both Bach's interest in depicting the Trinity and his groundbreaking blending of three national styles. The piece opens with a grand overture in the French style, depicting the grandeur of God the Father. Jesus, who came down from heaven, is represented by a descending, gal ant figure derived from Italian styles, and the Holy Spirit is portrayed in a rushing wind of sixteenth notes, in traditional Germanic counterpoint. Further reference to the Trinity can be found in the key signature with its three flats, and the symmetrical proportions of the three sections (A/B/A).
The fugue, today's postlude, follows rather the same pattern. First comes a slow fugue, representative of the Father and in the ancient polyphonic style. Then the Son is represented by a faster fugue, full of cross-motives for the hands only. The Spirit is represented by a dance-like fugue, in which all three motives are combined, building an atmosphere of incredible joy.
The subject is identical to the first eight notes of the hymn "0 God Our Help in Ages Past", which has given the fugue the nickname "St. Anne," after the hymntune, but it is unlikely, and certainly unprovable, that Bach knew this tune or had it in mind.
