Roger Harper’s Letter

“I just knew she was OK.’ A man fairly new to church was talking about a meditation at church in which he had had a picture of his mother, who had died some time before, tending a garden. The same message has come to different people in different ways – a sense of light, a bird in a special place, and many others. These experiences which just come, unexpectedly, are fairly common. To each person, God is saying ‘She or he is fine, she is with me. You can leave her with me and turn back to life. I am looking after her. You now look after other people, and enjoy life.’

After these experiences people feel they can leave those they love in God’s hands. They don’t need to talk to them or ask help from them. They concentrate on relationships with the living.

These experiences do not come to everyone, but the message they convey is for everyone. It is a message that fits in with Jesus and His Father as the Bible shows them to be.

Some people would love to have such an experience to assure them that those who have died are OK, but it doesn’t come. These things are unpredictable. With or without an experience, because of Jesus and His Father God, we can all be assured that beyond this life is a love greater than we can imagine, reaching out in ways we hardly understand, ready to embrace every person on and from our planet.

This is why I, and other Christian leaders, encourage people not to talk to and seek messages from those who have died. God wants us to leave those we love still, but see no longer, with him. They have a better life, the life of Paradise, to enjoy with Jesus. Trying to be in touch with them now does not help them, nor us. It makes life more difficult in the end.

Jesus, who has himself been through death, is the best person to care for those who have died. If we have important messages we want to convey to them, we ask Jesus to pass the message on. Jesus is also the best person to help us with the worries and decisions of this life, and to send us people to be our companions. Let’s contact Jesus and know that those who have died are fine with him .

Lent is here – from Ash Wednesday, March 5. 40 days to freshen up, tone up, wake up, measure up, grow up. I love it.

Detoxing is now fashionable. Skipping a meal twice a week has been a well promoted health discovery. Lent has always been about detoxing. John Wesley, the Methodist pioneer, in the 18th Century encouraged his followers to fast twice a week.

Lent is time to stop being self-indulgent. We can say ‘no’ to desires for things that are not healthy, whether it is crisps, or late night TV, or swearing. We can be strong enough to say ‘no’ and keep to it. We can develop self-control. At least for 40 days we can. Then the habit is formed and we decide whether to keep it. We can do this with Jesus’ help. Ask for His Spirit of self-control and you will come through to Easter healthier and happier. Roger [email protected] 931 2109

Church & Diocesan News

MYTH OR REALITY… ST HELEN’S CHURCH CHOIR

Myth: The Church Choir is an elitist group of old fuddy-duddies who dress up on Sundays and sing the same old hymns. Reality: We are a group of musicians who choose to sing in church on Sundays, who are friendly and caring and enjoy upholding the traditions of church music, and trying out new music. Sadly, like all established groups we are obviously not getting younger… some choir members have long service medals from the bishop…( they are the ones with the purple ribbons..) the rest of us are relative youngsters! We all have other commitments and cannot always make it to services… nor are we expected to. We would welcome help and interest from willing and able singers who could spare an hour on two or three Thursday evenings per month, and about an hour and a half on two or three Sunday mornings a month. An ability to sing is obviously a requirement, and an ability to read music is an obvious advantage but not a necessity. If you are interested please call me or speak to any choir members.(0115 9312803) Mary Simpson (relative youngster and stand in choir director!!)

BULCOTE PARISH COUNCIL REPORT

Minutes of the Council Meeting held on 21st January 2014 at 7.00 pm in Bulcote Farm Committee Room Present: - Councillors G. Homan, K. Hutson, P. Mountain and A. Washbrooke. Clerk: - Mr. R. J. Aston In attendance: - County/District Councillor R. Jackson and 14 members of the public 1. Apologies Councillor Mrs. K. Jackson sent apologies. 2. Minutes of the previous meeting The Minutes of the meeting held on 19th November 2013 were approved as a true record of the meeting and signed by the Chairman. 3. Questions from the public a. Telephone boxes on the A612 The siting of the boxes is within the permitted road safety limits and the telephone company cannot be made to move them. The only way to have them removed would be to pay for it and this could prove to be costly. b. Bulcote Garage Apparently the planning conditions do allow a full scale garage operation to be run from the garage and the tyre operation would fall within the conditions. c. Willow Cottage, Old Main Road. Concern was expressed at the degree of development taking place and it was agreed that the plans would be consulted to ensure that the planning consent was being followed. d. 20, The Leas, Bulcote A great amount of disquiet amongst neighbours was expressed by 12 residents in connection with a planning application to extend the above property by increasing the garage and building an office over it. The applicant, who was at the meeting, agreed that up to 5 vans were operating from the house together with delivery vans calling from time to time. A sign written vehicle had appeared this very week indicating that staff training was taking place. The applicant stated that he had an industrial unit in Gunthorpe but seemed unwilling to operate from there. The residents drew attention to the fact that the road is narrow and ends in a cul-de-sac and it is not appropriate for vans to be regularly calling. The Council noted the comments and deferred a decision to a later date. 4. Matters arising from the minutes There was nothing not arising elsewhere in the minutes. 5. Report of the District/County Councillor Speed limit on the A612 The 40 mph speed limit is in force to the edge of Bulcote and resumes at the edge of Lowdham. The proposal is to reduce the speed limit to 40 mph for the length of road between. This would be supported by Lowdham Parish Council. It was agreed to inform the Highways Authority of the Council’s support for the reduction in the speed limit. 6. Highways a. Bulcote water course It was noted that the waterway had been inspected and the County Council considered that no clearance was necessary. However, the Parish Council had inspected it and found that the upstream owners needed to clear debris, that the silt under the bridge was 18 inches deep, and that a metal drum had been dumped. This will be reported. Pipes under the bridge are thought to be a gas main and electric cabling. However, the area will be excavated to find out. Continued ...

b. Fencing at the pumping station Plans for alternative fencing have been received and appear to be satisfactory. c. A612 speed restriction It was noted the speed of traffic in the 40 mph buffer zone is still too high. The Police have been asked to send a speed van which they claim that they have, but no results have been received from the Police. There have been 2 recent accidents, one a fatality. d. Ridings hedges These have been cut but the ditches need to be cleared of the debris. The contractor will be contacted. e. Street cleaning A team visited recently but the results in The Ridings, The Leas, and Old Main Road are far from satisfactory. Cllr. Mountain will follow up. d. Roadside footpath outside Oaklands, Old Main Road The path has subsided at this location and will be reported. e. Path cleaning The path at the A612 needs cleaning following the cutting of the hedge. Cllr. Homan agreed to instruct the village handyman. 7. Footpaths There was nothing to report. 8. Planning Matters Planning applications received Consideration of the application in respect of 20, The Leas was deferred. Planning decisions There were none. Other planning matters a. Parking of vans at White Cottage District Councillor Jackson agreed to follow this up with the Planning Enforcement department at Newark & Sherwood District Council. b. Bulcote Garage Complaints of noise will be referred to District Councillor Jackson. 9. Community Matters a. Multi-role dog bins A lack of response from Newark & Sherwood District Council will be followed up. Cllr. Washbrooke agreed to provide information on sourcing these. b. Payment of the Clerk’s salary for past and current month and expenses of £51.80 was approved. b. Accounts for the 9 months ended 31st December 2014 Noted c. BURTON JOYCE PARISH COUNCIL REPORT

VILLAGE CENTRE Following the withdrawal of previously approved funding from Notts County Council, the Parish Council continues to look for ways in which the improvements to the village centre can be funded. The County Council has advised that 500 bids are being considered for by them for funding in 2014/15 – the combined total of these bids is £9.4 million and only £0.5 million is available

The new County Council funding scheme has 5 scored criteria areas, including deprivation, external funding, community cohesion, economic viability and other local benefits. It is understood that all existing bids – including the Village Centre refurbishment and car parking improvements - have been appraised against this criteria and will go before NCC committee on 6th March. Local NCC councillors will receive copy of bids on 25th February. It is disappointing that applicants were not given the opportunity to re-submit their application this financial year based on the new criteria.

The County Council has confirmed that the bids which have scored well are the ones with a high deprivation score and those with a high level of match funding in place, on that basis it is unlikely that the Burton Joyce bid will be successful 2014/15 but the Parish Council will be looking at the bidding criteria and re-submitting the application again in 2015/16.

The Village Plan recently contacted the Parish Council to explore ways in which the community might be involved in fund-raising to contribute towards the cost of getting the work done and anyone interested in helping with this should contact Chris Helmore on 9312667.

PUBLIC TOILETS Gedling Borough Council has now completed the registration for absolute freehold title with the Land Registry which means it should be possible for them to transfer ownership of the public toilets to the Parish Council shortly. The Parish Council has already resolved to demolish the existing building and a working group to consider the options available for future use of the site will be discussed by a working group on Tuesday 25th February.

BUDGET 2014-15 The budget for 2014-15 was approved by the Parish Council at its meeting held on 4th February 2014 and the annual precept was set at £75.76 per household. Since 2012 the Parish Council has lost over £30,000 (20% of Parish Council’s total budget) of annual funding from Gedling Borough Council. Last year the Parish Council used £10,000 of its own reserves to ‘cushion’ the blow to residents and to keep the precept as low as possible but this situation is not sustainable.

BURTON JOYCE PARISH COUNCIL REPORT (Continued)

EMERGENCY PLAN The Emergency Plan for Burton Joyce is due for review and it has been suggested that a working group be set up (Chaired by a Parish Councillor) to update and improve the arrangements in place should an emergency strike the village. Given the level of flooding in certain parts of the country this is a highly topical issue and the Parish Council and Village Plan committee would urge anyone with an interest in helping to develop the plan to contact the Parish Office. ALLOTMENTS There has never been a better time for Burton Joyce residents who want an allotment to put their name on the waiting list – the waiting list is at its lowest level for a significant number of years. Requests are also welcome from residents of Bulcote and Stoke Bardolph who are eligible to take on an allot-ment on a non-resident basis at a slightly higher fee. Please contact the Parish Office to register. BURTON JOYCE PRIMARY SCHOOL Councillors attended a parents evening at the school in January and were impressed by the significant improvements achieved through the hard work of the new team. It is hoped a further inspection by HM Inspectorate will move the school a stage closer to exiting special measures.

The Parish Council has written to the Local Authority to seek clarification on a number of points surrounding the dismissal of Miss Gretton - a reply has been received but, as this failed to answer all queries, the matter is being pursued. Members of the public are welcome to attend meetings of the Parish Coun-cil and its committees – copies of all agendas and minutes are available on line at www.burtonjoyceparishcouncil.org.uk or from Jackie Dawn, Parish Clerk at the Parish Office, Library Building, Meadow Lane, Burton Joyce, Nottingham, NG14 5EX. Ada Codling

We are sad to announce the death of our mother, Mrs Ada Codling (nee Elliott) of 40 Church Road, Burton Joyce. She passed away suddenly but peacefully in her sleep on the 19th January 2014. It was a huge shock for all of us, as she had only recently celebrated her 70th Wedding Anniversary on the 4th December.

What made the celebration extra special for our parents was a beautiful photo and article in the Nottingham Post. Also in a later edition of the paper, there was a double page spread of some of the family taken at the party we had with family and friends on the 7th December. A reporter was writing about family relationships at Christmas time, and he was intrigued at the longevity of our parent’s marriage, and what their secret was.

Mum was born and brought up in Carlton with her two brothers Albert and William. Although Mum and Dad only lived a few houses away on Cavendish Road and attended the same school from the age of five they only started dating from the age of twenty-two. They married on the 4th December 1943. After leaving school and a short time at Players factory, Mum trained as a touch typist and worked for the Post Office in Nottingham. During the War years Mum served in the Land Army in Collingham.

Mum and Dad moved to 40 Church Road on the 1st January 1948 with one year old Catherine and in 1952 Josephine was born. In 1969 after being a housewife and mother for many years Mum became a Carer working at Braybrook old peoples home in the village. She worked there for eleven years until she retired at the age of 59.

As mentioned in the December issue, my mother was a very active member of the British Legion Women’s section and had been a member of the Mothers’ Union for over 40 years. She was greatly involved in many activities in the village and a regular church go-er, singing in the Mothers Union Choir, especially at Bulcote Church.

Thank you to all those who attended the funeral at Bulcote Church on the 3rd of February 2014 and for all their kind thoughts and condolences. Thanks also to Mark and Lyn Carr of the Woodpeckers for providing a prefect venue and excellent food. Our deepest thanks go to Steve Stephenson who conducted the service. He remembered our mother and spoke so warmly of her in his address. His warmth, kindness and compassion helped us all through a very difficult time. you need advice on what vaccinations you need or the cost of vaccinations please call our reception on 01159312500

This service is open to patients registered at other practices.

without letting us know. These appointments could have been offered to others if they had been cancelled in time. Don’t forget to get your prescriptions to us in plenty of time; we need 48 hours’ notice to process them. Please be aware when you book your appointment to only ask the doctor about one ailment at a time, if you have more than one thing to ask the doctor then please ask for a double appointment. But you may have to wait some time for one of these due to the volume of appointments required. When calling for an appointment please don’t ask for a particular GP, you will be offered the next available appointment with the duty doctor, all our doctors can see your previous notes and are highly qualified.

TLC for your PC

Online safety General speaking the Internet is pretty safe but there are dangers you should be aware of - Viruses, Trojans and Worms can infect your computer & cause a number of problems.

Trojans - often email attachments or internet downloads disguised as useful software, their sole purpose is to provide outside entities access to spy on and/or control your system. These programs can record keyboard input, hijack your webcam and even operate your PC/Laptop by remote control. Always install software from trusted sources, any antivirus software is never 100% effective at catching all threats, so if in doubt, avoid it.

Viruses are hidden in programs and infect systems in order to disrupt and destroy system software and data. They are often introduced via harmless looking email attachments, through the internet or an infected software installation. Always have up to date antivirus software installed, there are free antivirus software downloads available from AVG, Comodo, BitDefender and Avast so there is no excuse not to have at least some protection. Also if in doubt about a file you can use an online virus scanner like www.virustotal.com. Make sure you backup your important data regularly on an external hard disk, writable DVD or an online storage solution such as DropBox.com or Google Drive.

Worms - malicious software (malware) is spread to computers via the internet by exploiting security weaknesses. Once on your system they can hijack your email account and send spam messages to your contacts or can initiate ‘phishing’ messages designed to look legitimate and trick you into some kind of scam to harvest your bank details or gain payment from you. To avoid such issues, make sure you keep windows updates and security software up to date. Try to avoid websites or links that look suspicious.

Fake Microsoft Support Calls - If you ever get a phone call from someone claiming to be from Microsoft or anyone out of the blue claiming something is wrong with your computer then this is a scam, hang up the phone immediately.

FOR THERE IS ALWAYS A COMPANION TO WALK WITH

….Continued from last month’s issue Anyway, as I continued along Glen Rd and down Lambley Lane, listening to the song of some birds and the squawking of others, a tiny field mouse came from under a hedgerow, took one look at me and went back to hide. Into my mind came the words of God when He spoke about the creatures that would “move along the ground”. Down to the bottom of the lane now and making for Station Road and the footpath, which gives access to the bank of the river. Sometimes there would be a small herd of cows grazing in the grass, and as I made my way between them I noticed how the slight noise of gentle chewing from one animal becomes a cacophony when 20 or 30 are close together. During the springtime there would sometimes be an unusual scene over the water. As the sun began to rise over the river a mist would build up over the water and so a good length of the River Trent was hidden from my view. This mist would be quite still and dense, but tinged with a red reflection from the sky above. It was a beautiful sight to look upon, but this only happened five or six times during the year when I was out walking early in the morning. Continuing along the river bank I would move on to the footpath beside the allotments where some ladies as well as gentlemen of Burton Joyce till the land to grow vegetables and flowers. At the end of these gardens, some of which are very pleasing to the eye, and across the railway lines there were, and perhaps still are, two donkeys. They were very much in happy retirement, seeming to live a peaceful and well cared for existence, and my thoughts would turn to the similar animal our Lord Jesus chose to ride on into Jerusalem. And now after this part of the walk my thoughts would be disturbed by the crowing of a cockerel, coming, it seemed, from a small clutch of houses at the Bulcote end of our village. Continued……. Page 31 The Burton Joyce, Bulcote & Stoke Bardolph Parish Magazine 2014

...continued.. Now my mind would be filled with thoughts of our Saviour, who knew He was to die on that cross so that our lives would not be ruled by Satan, and so that we should live throughout eternity. And of course I would be conscious of the sorrow and shame of Peter, who, not unlike some of us today, thought he was stronger than he really was. So now it was back home to breakfast and as I enjoyed a slice of toast and a mug of steaming hot tea I could reflect on all I had seen in this beautiful place God had brought me to. He created a world of beauty, and in His own image a people of beauty as well. But sin has got into our lives and a barrier has been created between God and His people. Only the agony of sacrifice and the freely given love of God the Father and God the Son could break through that barrier—and it has done for many. And so I believe that if we take our part in the Sacrifice and if we live in that freely given love, then we shall surely know the Kingdom of God when our time comes. There is more to walking around Burton Joyce than wearing out shoe leather and getting out of breath by climbing up Padley’s Lane.

Set the bowl over a pan of gently simmering water until almost melted. Remove the bowl carefully from the pan & stir the chocolate with a wooden spoon until it’s smooth. Leave to cool for about 15 minutes but don’t let the chocolate set. Stir the custard into the melted chocolate until smooth. Whisk the egg whites in a large bowl with an electric whisk until fairly stiff but not dry. Stir 1/3 of the egg whites into the melted chocolate with a large metal spoon to loosen, then fold in the rest. Divide the mixture between 6 dessert dishes or coffee cups. Cover them with cling film & chill for at least 1 hour. When you’re ready to eat, take the dishes out of the fridge & uncover them. Tumble a few raspberries into the centre of each one & dust with sifted icing sugar. Grate the remaining chocolate over the top. Serve on day of making. Note: this recipe contains raw egg whites

Nottinghamshire Police alert PCSO James Lievesley has sent out a message about card fraud in Carlton and asks residents to remain vigilant. An individual received a phone call in the evening supposedly from “Card Fraud” and was told that someone had tried to use her card to buy a computer. She was instructed to cut up her card and a courier would arrive at her house to collect it. The lady cut up her card and placed it in an envelope. 15 minutes later a taxi arrived and collected it. The next day the lady contacted her bank to tell them what had happened and the bank informed her that the sum of £470 had been taken out of the account. If you receive any calls of this nature DO NOT pass any information over the phone. And do not give your card to anyone.

Anna Sims, CMS mission partner update While we have been sloshing through an exceptionally muddy February Anna has spent a hot and steamy February in tents with young people in Peru enjoying summer camps, building bonds amongst the community, and exploring Christianity together. Thanks to plenty of support, particularly at the St Helen’s Coffee Morning in December, we have been able to contribute £300 towards the cost of tents and supplies. Anna loved the photographs of Paddington Bear at the coffee morning. Christmas in Peru for Anna involved plenty of hot chocolate, panettone and fireworks so it sounds as though she is settling in well! There will be more feedback on Anna’s work in the next Parish Magazine. SS

Burton Joyce Players Our pantomime this year was a great success with a near full house for every performance. Humpty Dumpty was scripted by local Chris Mercer

from Lowdhamstein and directed by Patrick Mc Donough from Jurton Boyce. A production of this size takes in the region of 50 people to get it on the stage. Many of these people never appear on stage, and include people

like Jenny and Roger Harwood, who with helpers were responsible for half a dozen sets and around a hundred costumes. Together with a team for

front of house, props and a trio of technicians led by David Page controlling light and sound.

Our spring production is a comedy by Richard Harris, “Foot in the Door”, May 1st to 3rd. As the title suggests it’s about door to door salesmen and women trying to sell a variety of services to May, which she doesn’t really

want! See next month’s magazine for more details. For the autumn we are planning something really special recognising the

100th Anniversary of the start of WW1 We welcome new members, on or off stage . Interested? Give our

secretary a call - Mr Mel Reynolds on 9871306.

Mothering Sunday is on March 30th

Visitors share talents at Carlton le Willows

YEAR 9 students at Carlton le Willows are set to enjoy a Shakespearian production right on their doorstep this month, thanks to a visit from an internationally acclaimed theatre troupe. Actors from the Propeller Theatre Company are stopping off to perform a private showing of their pint-sized adaptation of the Bard’s Henry V in the Academy’s very own West Hall. The all-male cast will bring their own set, costumes and lighting rig for the 60-minute show Pocket Henry, which is also showing to public audiences on a nationwide tour. Carlton le Willows is one of just two schools in Nottingham lucky enough to enjoy the private performance, thanks to subsidy from Theatre Royal Nottingham.

And just last week, 260 Year 7 pupils joined together to be put through their paces in a street dance workshop run by Nottingham dancer and Britain’s Got Talent semi-finalist Joseph Hall. The charismatic dancer’s visit was organised by Lepra to thank students for their fundraising efforts on behalf of the international charity, which works to fight disease, poverty and prejudice. This year – Lepra’s 90th anniversary – is the 20th year that Year 7 students have got involved in a fundraising fortnight, with a massive £12,945 raised by Academy pupils over that time to help people in India and Bangladesh living on the margins of society, often in extreme poverty. Another visitor bringing his own special talents to Carlton le Willows Academy this month, was Paralympic athlete Sam Ruddock.

Sam, who represented Britain in the 100m and 200m sprint at the London 2012 Olympics, worked as an ‘athlete mentor’ with a group of students sharing tips on how to achieve your best in everything. During a whole day at the Academy, Sam showed them important life skills that can be used in sport - and all other aspects of life – to help overcome challenges.

The scheme, run by Sky Sports’ ‘Living for Sports’, will culminate with two inter-house sports tournaments – table tennis and badminton – which will be organised and promoted by the students themselves.

March Spring is in full swing! We have had a fairly mild start to this year, and have been lucky

enough to have avoided the snow, experiencing just s few sharp frosts. Spring is now in full swing with trees and shrubs coming into bud

and leaf, evening s are lighter, mornings are brighter and we can look forward to the gardening year ahead. There is something magical about this time of year when plants start to grow and bloom. March is the most important month to feed your garden birds, so continue to put out feed first thing in the morning when they need the energy most! It is truly an encouraging time of year and there is no better time to be getting out in the garden. Here are our top tips on what to be doing in your garden this month. Prune Winter flowering shrubs now they have finished flowering Plant seed potatoes, shallots and onion sets Plant perennials and divide existing clumps that have become overgrown Get ready for a colourful summer display by planting summer bulbs now Continue to feed birds Cultivate your beds and borders ready for planting Sow green manure now to nourish your vegetable beds ready for growing Look out for weeds as they come back into growth and keep them under control On drier days cut the lawn Plant roses. Avoid planting in the same area as roses have previously been grown as

they will not establish as well Prune established bush and standard roses to an outward facing bud Feed trees and shrubs with a general fertiliser such as growmore Keep an eye out for late frosts, as they may still occur

Be vigilant of late frosts! It is easy to become complacent with the milder temperatures and forget about the possible threat, but one sharp late frost can be enough to damage tender young plants. Now is a great time to apply a good fertiliser to your soil as high rainfall washes away nutrients. Also use a soil conditioner to help improve the structure of your soil.

Got a vegetable patch? Why not sow a green manure? These are fast growing plants sown to cover bare soil, by doing this they smother weeds and help prevent soil erosion. Whilst the plants are still green, they can be dug back into the soil to put back nutrients and improve the soil structure, creating the ideal foundations for successful crop production.

Plant of the Month A new and exciting plant to look out for this month is Daphne ‘Rebecca’. An absolutely stunning new variety, of this popular shade lover. The leaves are broad and variegated, and it is in flower now. Look out for this new plant in your local garden centre.

Make the most of the spring sun, and get out in your garden today!

Fun and Flower Arranging at Dover Beck Flower Club

As you can see from the picture a good time was had by all at the December meeting of the club! Various m e m b e r s d e m o n s t r a t e d flower arrangements for Christmas table centres and there was a grand finale arrangement by Barbara Smith.

We are fortunate to have Barbara on hand, a founder member of the club, who is a former NAFAS qualified demonstrator. We then had a very social time with mulled wine and mince pies courtesy of Christine Preston and Pippa Handley.

In January we had our AGM which was followed by a quiz, supper and more wine……….something of a theme here?

We now look forward to our next NAFAS demonstration of the year on Thursday March 20th. We have June Borrowdale with “Seasonal Serendipity”, this is a repeat visit for June, who is one of our most popular and talented demonstrators in the midlands area. If you would like to come along just turn up between 7.00 and 7.30 pm at Burton Joyce Village Hall. We are a very welcoming group!

We meet again on April 17th for Rachel Poole’s demonstration entitled “Something a bit willow”. Visitors pay £5. If you would like more information give Carolyn a call on 0115 9664771.

On May 15th we really have the big guns out for our “Open Meeting” which is again in the village hall. This year we have Tom Hodge who is a renowned National demonstrator. His title is “Nature’s Magic” and tickets will be £9 to include a welcome drink. On this evening there will also be a bottle tombola, raffle and mammoth plant stall before the meeting begins at 7.30 pm. Tom is well worth seeing so do come along. You can get tickets by phoning Carolyn as above or by coming to our March or April meetings.

PAST PERSONALITIES OF BURTON JOYCE

Elijah Linley -Parish Clerk “There died on Saturday night at Burton Joyce, one of the oldest residents in the person of Mr Elijah Linley, who was born on 30th July 1824, thus being in his 90th year. For over 60 years he held the office of Parish Clerk, having been appointed on August 4th 1844. The deceased was a framework knitter working for many years at his own frame. He was born in the same cottage in which he died. He had lived in the reign of five Sovereigns and had tolled the bell for four.” Elijah’s grandfather, John was the first of the family to settle in Burton Joyce in the eighteenth century and he founded a prolific family. There are still descendents of John Linley living in the village today. Elijah succeeded his father, also John, to the post of Parish Clerk, an important position in the church [not to be confused with today’s Clerk to the Parish Council.] He was aged twenty, a young age to be given such a responsible position. John Rolleston, the vicar, had baptised Elijah and would have watched him grow up and may even have taught him in the school which was held in a room in the church, so would have known his capabilities. We know Elizabeth, the vicar’s wife, taught in this school, which gave some of the village children an opportunity of education, so it is more than likely that Elijah would have been a pupil. The following is taken from “Burton Joyce & Bulcote”, Sutton, 1993 “The appointment of the Parish Clerk was in the hands of the vicar….who presumably approved the succession of Elijah to his father’s position….By the nineteenth century the work of the parish clerk was to arrange Baptisms , communions, weddings and burials, and to keep the registers. He also acted as sexton, ringing the bells and sometimes even leading the responses, and digging the graves. Elijah was also the verger, so he had to clean the church, wash the surplices, stoke the boiler and maintain the churchyard. It is stated that he dug 1,100 graves and attended 400 marriages and 1,500 baptisms! He is reputed to have been very agile in his younger days. The church then had three bells and he managed to ring all three, jumping about on the steps of the font which, at that time stood under the tower.

Page 39 The Burton Joyce, Bulcote & Stoke Bardolph Parish Magazine 2014

...Continued Between 1885 and 1895 the parish magazine published the church accounts. These show that Elijah was paid £13 a year as parish clerk, and that in 1889 he also received £2 for cleaning the church, £2.3s.6d* for the churchyard and £2.12s.6d* for washing the surplices. In addition he received a small fee for each wedding, baptism and burial as well as payment for digging graves.” On the 50th anniversary of his appointment the parishioners “in token of their kindly feelings towards him”, clubbed together and presented him with a purse containing £22.5s.* “In spite of his increasing infirmity, Elijah continued to hold the appointment until his death, although for a number of years he was not able to undertake the more active jobs, but he apparently still worked his knitting frame and pottered in his garden.” In his obituary in the Nottingham Evening News it was said that his memories of things which had happened in his younger days were remarkably interesting, and he used to talk very pleasantly of the various vicars under whom he had served [five altogether]…..Although not a great traveller, he was one of the earliest passengers on the opening of the Midland line from Nottingham to Lincoln. After an illness of only a few days, Elijah died at the age of eighty-nine and was buried at Burton Joyce on 15th November 1913. There are more details about Elijah’s life in the publication mentioned above. Mary Gardiner and Margaret Exley Thanks to the History Society for the use of the photograph of Elijah. Editors Note* In today’s value £2.3s.6d = £226.58, £2.12s.6d = £273.45 & £22.5s = £2317.84

Abigail’s World Challenge Expedition to Borneo - Barn Dance, Village Hall , Saturday 22nd March, 7.30pm.

The prospect of flying half way round the world brings excitement and trepidation, especially when you are just 15 years old and undertaking a month-long expedition to Borneo. This World Challenge expedition by our grand-daughter, Abigail Moggridge, includes a PADI scuba-diving course, a jungle trek requiring navigation skills, sleeping in the open in a hammock and cooking over open fires, as well as, importantly, working on projects within the local village community which can range from conservation work, helping at the village school and building a new classroom. To achieve this, Abigail has to raise around £3,800. She is doing well in her efforts, but to help give her funds a boost we are promoting a Barn Dance in the Village Hall on Saturday 22nd March at 7.30pm including a bar and hot supper. Music is by the well-known and popular Fred’s Folks. Please see the half-page advertisement on page 25 for all the details. So do come along and bring a group of relatives and friends to an excellent social evening where everyone can enjoy themselves. Abigail will be most appreciative and she will be there to greet you all!

Christine and Alwyn Foster.

Adam and Eve’s true nationality

A Brit, a Frenchman and a Russian were viewing a painting of Adam and Eve frolicking in the Garden of Eden. "Look at that garden they are maintaining so well," mused the Brit. "They must be British."

"Nonsense," the Frenchman disagreed. "They're naked, and so beautiful. Clearly, they are French."

"Ah, but no clothes, no shoes, no shelter," the Russian pointed out, "they have only an apple to eat, and they're being told this is paradise. They are Russian." Parish Pump

Happy Families After the dedication of his baby brother in church, Jason sobbed all the way home in the back seat of the car. His father asked him three times what was wrong.
