WHO wouldn’t want to go tent camping in a spacious Woodytent, enjoying its large living room, outdoor deck, fully equipped kitchen and luxurious bathroom?

A fortunate bidder at the KOA Care Camps live auction will have the chance to win that special camping experience for themselves. The tent, valued at $27,000, will be up for bid at the Care Camps auction on the final day of the KOA Annual Convention in Fort Worth, Texas, Nov. 12-15, 2018.

“Woodytent’s generous donation will allow us to send even more children with cancer to camp,” said Karen McAndrew, Executive Director of KOA Care Camps and owner of Cardinal/Ottawa South KOA in Canada. “We can’t thank them enough.”

Rendy Regtuit, sales consultant at Woodytent, said

the company believes that finding time to vacation, relax and connect with nature are important for everyone, but especially for children who are ill.

“It is necessary on occasion to retreat from the stresses of daily life and immerse ourselves in the beauty of the natural world,” Regtuit said. “This is especially true for children battling cancer.”

“The least we can do is provide these children a place away from the hospital, where they can be silly kids instead of patients,” she said. “We donated the Woodytent M, our favorite tent design, with love to the Care Camps Aucdtion so that these children will have the funds available to create joyous memories with their friends and forget their worries for a time while at camp.”

The Woodytent M can sleep up to six people. It features

one queen bed, one bunk bed and a cabin bed. It has a full bathroom, tent and deck furniture, and lots of storage space.

“Gifts, like this amazing one from Woodytent, have a major impact on the lives of kids with cancer, allowing them to attend one of the 133 oncology camps that we support. These camps are provided at no cost to their families,” McAndrew said. "Their camp experience provides them with lifelong friends, a respite from their daily challenges and a chance to be a kid again. The healing power of camp is amazing.”

McAndrew said that the cost to operate these camps continues to grow and the average cost to send a child to camp has risen to $1,800 per week.

The KOA Owners’

Association created KOA Care Camps in 1984. Over $13 million has been raised. In 2017, $1.15 million in operating and capital grants was disbursed serving 42,000 people.

Woodytent Glamping Inc., with offices in Plattsburgh, N.Y., sells its tents for personal and commercial use in the U.S, and Canada. The tents are fabricated in Europe from highest quality material available and feature barnwood walls and furniture and a partially covered porch. Woodytents can be installed on any surface.

Woodytents come in many different layouts with sleeping accommodations for two to eight guests. The tents offer large living rooms and outdoor decks, fully equipped kitchens and roomy bathrooms.

The company also sells more rustic models designed for no running water or electricity, and models that comply with ADA standards. All layouts include storage space, closet space for luggage and clothes, and cupboard space for utensils.

NORTH CAROLINA - Hurricane Florence caused between $2.8 billion and $5 billion in insured losses when it blew into North Carolina earlier this month, according to an estimate from global risk modeling firm RMS.

Wind alone caused damage worth between $1.3 billion and $2.6 billion, with storm-surge and inland flooding damages totaling between $700 million and $1.2 billion. The company's Monday estimates also include losses to the National Flood Insurance Program, which is expected to lose between $800 million and $1.2 billion.

These estimations include property damage and business interruption in residential, commercial, industrial and automobile businesses. That also includes damage to infrastructure and blocked access to damaged areas, which delay businesses reopening and prevent residents from returning.

Florence's worst damage stemmed from heavy rains and floods.

"While wind-driven damages

will still be sizable, the story of this storm is the flood impacts," said Mohsen Rahnama, chief risk modeling officer at RMS. "Florence's slow-moving nature brought historic rainfall and flooding to the Carolinas."

The firm expects some 70 percent of the region's total losses to be uninsured.

Factoring in uninsured losses, RMS expects the total economic loss to range between $6 billion and $11 billion. That doesn't even include roads, utilities and government-owned property, which usually are not insured or self-insured.

"Florence is yet another large inland flood event that exposes the protection gap for flood insurance in the U.S.," Rahnama said. "Thus, we expect much of the losses in interior portions of the region to be largely uninsured."

Hurricane Florence, which came ashore as a Category

1 storm, has already been compared to some of the most devastating hurricanes in recent history. It was the first hurricane to make landfall in North Carolina since Hurricane Irene in 2011.

When it was still churning in the Atlantic, Florence was a Category 3, sustaining winds of 127 miles per hour and making Florence one of the most intense storms in recent history.

SOCIAL media can deliver some pretty powerful revenue-generating opportunities for your park, but only if you know how to use it. We asked Erin Thiem, who co-owns ARVC member-park Inn Town Campground in Nevada City, Calif. with her husband Dan Thiem, to share a few of the secrets of her online success.

Even though Inn Town Campground has only been open for two years, Thiem honed her social media skills with the other business she and her husband own, the Outside Inn, also in Nevada City.

“Outside Inn is a remodeled 1930s motor court motel that’s been in the family for 20 years, but we've owned it for the last seven-and-a-half years. When we took over ownership, I decided that my creative

outlet would be to write a blog for the motel on things to do in our area.“

“I think my most recent one was about a local craft fair,” she says. “The one before that was about an indoor climbing gym. It doesn’t really have much to do with the motel itself, but it helps draw people there.”

Thiem started blogging about their new campground while it was still in the construction phase. “I took all of those skills that I already had from being an active local blogger and using social media, and just applied them to telling the story about our campground.”

GENERATING INTEREST WITH INSTAGRAM

We live in a visual world,

so social media channels like Instagram are enjoying massive popularity right now with campers.

It’s because of this that Instagram plays a big role in the Inn Town Campground owner Erin Thiem’s social media strategy.

“I think what's unique about our Instagram story is that it’s a really a fun visual platform. Because it took us three years to build our campground, we had the opportunity to share the process with people through our Instagram account.”

“It really helped create a unique community of people who are passionate about the project and find us real paying customers. It also helped educate people about what we were doing and what our campground was going to look

like once it opened. I really utilized that tool to help get the word out.”

Now that the campground has been open for two years, Thiem uses Instagram to share what’s going on at the park.

“It’s a great way to show and remind customers or potential customers what we’re up to.”

Inn Town Campground’s recent Instagram posts showcased things to do at the campground as well as suggestions for side trips guests can take. Thiem also posted a video to tease “something fun” that they were soon adding to the park. Her followers quickly weighed in with guesses on what it could possibly be. A trampoline? A tee pee? Yurts? Time will tell, but with just a single post, Thiem was able to build interest and excitement and get her followers engaged.

“I never seem to run out of things to share,” she says.

CHULA VISTA, CALI. – After 35-years in business, the Chula Vista RV Resort will be shutting its doors on February 1, 2019.

The RV resort sent out a notice to customers this week informing them the park will close and anyone with reservations after February 2019, will be issued a full refund.

Cathy Butler said she has come to the RV resort for years. “Everybody is sad it is going to be gone. We are definitely going to miss this place. We come down here once a year with our group. We potluck, we swim, we

play games.”The park will be closing to

make way for the new billion dollar Bayfront project that was approved by the Chula Vista City Council and the Port of San Diego. The project will include a 1,600 room hotel, a 275,000-square-foot convention center, two parks and a fire station.

The makeover has been in the works for several years.

“I hope they bring in industry that will help the community of Chula Vista financially, but I also hope they take into consideration [that] people have worked here for many, many years,”

said Butler.Another RV park is expected

to be build a few blocks away by the group Sun

Communities Inc.; however, some fear it just won’t be the same.

WASHINGTON - America’s national parks are warming up and drying out faster than other U.S. landscapes, threatening iconic ecosystems from the Everglades in Florida to Joshua Tree in California to Denali in Alaska.

That’s the conclusion of a new climate change study published Monday, the first to examine rainfall and temperatures in all 417 national parks sites. The study also forecasts the degree that

parks could become hotter and more drought-stricken by century’s end, depending on whether nations undertake efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, or continue with business as usual.

“U.S. national parks protect some of the most irreplaceable ecosystems in the world,” said the study, published in Environmental Research Letters, a peer-reviewed scientific journal. Reductions in industrial

emissions could “substantially reduce the magnitude” of expected impacts, the study added, “offering hope for the future of the U.S. national parks.”

It is hardly news that climate change is challenging

numerous national parks. In the Everglades, rising sea levels and saltwater intrusion threaten habitat and wildlife that depend upon fresh flows of water. Catastrophic wildfires threaten Yosemite and other national parks in California. In Montana, there is online debate about whether Glacier National Park should soon rename itself, or face accusations of false advertising.

Yet Monday’s study is the first to analyze how a warming climate affects the entire 85-million-acre national park system, a collection of particularly dynamic landscapes.

“A higher fraction of national parks are in extreme environments,” said Patrick

Gonzalez, a forest ecologist at University of California, Berkeley who authored the study with UC Berkeley colleagues and scientists at the University of Wisconsin, Madison.

Photos taken in 1920, left, and 2010 show how the Grinnell Glacier in Montana’s Glacier National park has shrunk over 90 years, as the world has warmed. A study published Monday adds to the fears that glaciers could completely disappear in this park by the end of the century.

National parks are getting hotter and drier. What’s the outlook for 2100?

Page 9: THE PAPER-THIN LINE BETWEEN RV AND CORE OUTDOOR … · from heavy rains and floods. "While wind-driven damages will still be sizable, the story of this storm is the flood impacts,"

National parks tend to be relatively high in elevation, where warming occurs more quickly because of the thinner atmosphere, Gonzalez said. In addition, a large proportion of park land is located in the desert Southwest and Alaska - regions feeling the strongest impacts of climate change.

The study found that, between 1885 and the year

2010, areas that are now national parks warmed by 1.8 degrees Fahrenheit, twice the U.S. rate. It also found that annual precipitation in national parks declined 12 percent, compared to 3 percent drop in the United States overall, during that same period.

At current rates of greenhouse gas emissions, temperatures in the most

exposed national parks - particularly in Alaska - could rise by as much as 16 degrees Fahrenheit by 2100, according to the study.

-With that level of increase, arctic permafrost could further melt, trees will replace tundra and wildfires will be more common and damaging. Many rare species would be unable to migrate to more comfortable climes, bringing some to the brink of extinction.

-Individual parks face varying threats, according to Monday’s study and other research it cites:

-- In Yellowstone National Park, outbreaks of bark beetle due to climate change have killed half the park’s whitebark pine in areas that increased 3.4 degrees since the 1950s.

-- In Joshua Tree National Park, managers are concerned that climate change could eventually make the park too warm for the park’s namesake Joshua trees. This form of

yucca was spread around the Southwest in the dung of giant sloth that went extinct 13,000 years ago, and have adapted to certain elevations and temperatures. While it might be able survive at higher elevations outside the park, that would require human intervention to disperse seeds as the extinct sloth once did.

-- In Glacier National Park, average temperatures have risen nearly 4 degrees Fahrenheit since 1950, one cause of the park’s shrinking glacial fields. According to Monday’s study, temperatures in the park could rise as much as 9 degrees by 2100. “At this point, it is likely that the glaciers in Glacier National park will ultimately disappear,” said John Williams, a University of Wisconsin geography professor who contributed to the study.

THIS is an anniversary article for us at MCPS for Campgrounds. It is article #400 that carries our name. I felt it was time to explain HOW MCPS of Central PA became MCPS for Campgrounds.

MCPS of Central PA started in 2000 in a spare bedroom in my home in New Berlin, PA. I solicited local businesses for credit cards and it was easy. The reason was that although local banks offered credit card services there was no one who was actually soliciting prospective customers door-to-door. If a retailer asked the bank about credit cards, they would sign him up.

But their rates were not competitive. The reason was, and is, that there are only

50 banks that are Acquiring Banks who deal will the card companies directly and get rates from them. But there are literally thousands of banks that offer credit cards and they are called Agent Banks. They get their rates from the acquiring banks. My rates came directly from Visa, Mastercard, Discover and American Express so there was no middleman.

I was doing rather well here in Central PA, I even sold a local campground; Shangri-La on the Creek. They were my first seasonal business. Three months later the owner informed me that she had sold the campground and the new owner had his own credit card processor, I called him and convinced him my rates were better than he was getting and

he switched the processing back to me. Several months later he called and asked me about other campground he owned and, accidently, I had discovered a wonderful new market for credit card services.

First we joined the PCOA and then joined 17 associations of different states or regions including ARVC. During the 12 years that MCPS for campgrounds has been in business we attended nearly 50 trade shows, have advertised in many publications, given seminars at dozens of meetings of campground owners and called over 6,000 campgrounds.

We are now serving over 650 campgrounds with

credit/debit card processing and Deanne Bower, one of the three who started this business is, perhaps, one of the most knowledge women in the industry.

We enjoy the telemarketing experience but, of course, it does have its drawbacks. Calling at the right time is important. Who you speak to is important and, most importantly, be respectful to the owners who simply say “NO”.

For all these years we’ve been representing only our credit card services. But at a trade show two years ago, other suppliers told us they’d love to tele-market but didn’t have the where-with-all. It occurred to us that we did and we might incorporate these businesses into one presentation. But we needed to find the best suppliers in the industry, the most notable, that furnished essential services. So we started to tele-market them. We finally came up with 6 others that most campgrounds will require or do utilize right now. We formed CAMPGROUND ADVOCATE and under that brand have been calling campgrounds representing these businesses.

Advocate began in August and will continue on a trial basis until the end of November when our participating businesses can either opt out or continue

for an additional period. It IS working for them and instead of getting 3 new leads a week for MCPS for campgrounds we are getting about 8-10 new total leads a week for our participants. These are potential customers that they might never have had by advertising or by attending trade shows.

The participants are: CampgroundViews.com; Leavitt Recreation and Hospitality Insurance; Conestoga Log Cabins; ParksandPlaces.com; Randy Isaacson - Campground Loan Coordinator; The Jump Pad and, of course, us.

If you don’t know who these suppliers are, shame on you. They can build your website

and advertise your business, get you the exact insurance you need, get you kits for cabins, bathhouses, pavilions and more, help you sell your campground or find one to buy, get you loans up to many millions of dollars, sell you the most popular inflatable available and lower your rates on credit cards while providing the best service in the industry.

Perhaps, more importantly, it will be ONLY one phone call for all SEVEN of these businesses. Think of it, now

you can concentrate on your campers more than salespeople.

SOUTH CAROLINA - On the weather maps, the last trace of Hurricane Florence disappeared more than a week ago. But the South Carolina port city of Georgetown, where five rivers flow into the sea, is bracing for the worst of its aftermath Wednesday and preparing for floodwaters in downtown areas.

The colonial-era seaport town of 9,000 is particularly vulnerable at the junction where waters from the Intracoastal Waterway and the Black, Great Pee Dee, Waccamaw and Sampit rivers pour into the sea. So much water is flowing downriver that it is backing up other rivers that are not even flooding and could split the county nearly in two.

The latest forecast, however, offered a glimmer of hope. Georgetown County officials said the river flow had slowed

and the worst of the flooding is now expected to come on Friday and likely will be in the 2- to 4-foot range, instead of 10.

"That is still above Hurricane Matthew levels, and is very significant and can do a lot of damage. But it's definitely an improvement on previous expectations," county officials said on Twitter. On Friday, the Macammay surpassed the previous record high of 17.9 feet set in 2016 by Matthew.

Officials cautioned, however, that forecasts could shift again

and return to the original 10-foot levels.

County officials urged nearly 8,000 Georgetown County residents to evacuate ahead of the "record event," The Associated Press said. The SCE&G utility service has turned off all natural gas service to about 200 customers in downtown Georgetown as a precaution. Several shelters were set up at local hospitals.

“The work has been done,” Georgetown Mayor Brendon Barber said. “We just need

to pray.”The South Carolina

Department of Natural Resources released a map showing likely areas of flooding around Georgetown.

“Residents who live in flood zones along the Intracoastal Waterway, Waccamaw River and Pee Dee River, or who live in areas that may not be in a flood zone but may become isolated due to deteriorating

road conditions, are strongly urged to consider evacuation for their own safety and the safety of first responders,” officials said in a statement.

Walls of sandbags protected many shops on Front Street in downtown Georgetown, The Sun News reports. Except for those attending a prayer service Tuesday at a downtown park, the only people in the center

of the city were emergency responders and media.

National Guard crews installed a temporary system and sandbags along Highway 17 near the bridge over the Pee Dee and Waccamaw rivers. The guard also has a boat ferry to shuttle goods into Georgetown if the road closes, the newspaper reports.

On Tuesday, in Conway, South Carolina, just 35 miles or so north of Georgetown, multiple feet of water had already filled the streets.

TENNESSEE - Great Smoky Mountains National Park officials Friday announces

upcoming fall “Smokies Service Days” volunteer projects.

The opportunities allow community members and park visitors to get involved and become stewards of Great Smoky Mountains National Park by signing up for any of the scheduled service projects, which include caring for park campgrounds, historic buildings and other natural and cultural resources within the park boundaries.

The volunteer program helps complete needed work across the park and is ideal for those seeking to fulfill community service

requirements, including high school and college

students, Scout troops, civic organizations, visitors, families and working adults with busy schedules, the park said in a news release.

Each project will provide tasks appropriate for a wide range of ages. Volunteer projects will begin at 9 a.m. and last until noon on Saturday mornings, except for the Nov. 23 service date. In addition, each project will be followed by an optional enrichment adventure to immerse participants in the abundant natural and cultural resources of the park.

16 CAMPGROUND NEWS | September 28th, 2018 industrye-news.com

ACCORDING to Frank Hugelmeyer, the outdoor industry has an elitism problem. The president of the RV Industry Association - and former CEO of Outdoor Industry Association (OIA) - believes that both groups need to relax how they define themselves, because the outdoor and RV worlds are much closer than brands and retailers are willing to believe.

“Each of the segments of outdoor is very tribal,” said Hugelmeyer. As an example, consider the self-righteous notion of “earn your turns,” which has come to not only refer to superiority of backcountry skiers over resort skiers, but can be extrapolated. E-bikes are scoffed at by mountain bikers, some trad climbers would refuse to ever clip a bolt, and rifts even form between whitewater and flatwater kayakers.

These fissures are divisive, however, and many of these disciplines have grown closer together in recent years as we all realize that we’re fighting for and supporting the same things. But one category of outdoor adventure remains isolated: RVing.

“RVing was always viewed as something that’s not hard core enough,” said Hugelmeyer. In reality, the

outdoor industry is a pretty exclusive club. To join, you’ll have to adhere to a certain human-powered ethic, which makes it easy for the backpacker to scoff at the RV camper, or at least to see the differences

between the two worlds as more than they might actually be. According to Hugelmeyer, in a world like the outdoors, where what you do is so critical to your self-identity, it’s easy to disassociate from the other.

But Frank Hugelmeyer isn’t just an RV proponent. He considers himself, first, a climber. Having spent years at the helm of the Outdoor

Industry Association, his transition to the motorized world of giant campers confuses some of his own friends and coworkers. “I had a lot of old colleagues [in the outdoor industry] who wouldn’t be caught dead in an RV back in the day,” he said. “Yet they’re all in Sprinter vans right now.” He believes it's a telltale sign that the two industries are, in reality, much more aligned than most people realize.

Blurring the lines between traditional outdoor and RV industries

“A wide variety of experiences and a life well lived is now the currency,” Hugelmeyer said. According to him, consumers are moving toward a diversity of activities. As consumers trend toward the desire to do more across those different silos, the silos break down.

Stemming from social media promotion, the resurgence of the “American Road Trip” idea, and improved off-road and power technology, van life has blended the line between RVing and traditional camping. The paper-thin line between RV and core outdoor consumers

Hugelmeyer, wheels have become an obvious extension of more “hardcore” outdoor activities, both as a mobile basecamp getting adventurers to and from the trailhead, a more comfortable campsite, and an activity all its own.

Dean Wiltshire, the founder of Colorado Teardrops, is also watching the lines blur from a unique position at what he calls the confluence of two great rivers: outdoor and RV. According to him, when he started the company four years ago, teardrops were an oddity, the butt of an RV trade show joke that saw friends pushing others toward his tiny campers encouraging them to try and fit. “Now we get a lot more respect,” Wiltshire said.

He attributes the change to the overcrowding of both the nation’s backpacking and RV campgrounds, while smaller tow-alongs and vans open up new areas to access. “You can start a little further from the crowd,” he said, “get a good night’s sleep, get up early for an adventure, and crash when you get back in warm comfort.”

The company’s first

model - the Base Camp - acknowledged one of the biggest roles the new blended mobile and human-powered genre serves: As a comfortable, mobile, economic, and environmental launching pad for more rugged human-powered adventures. “You can still have your human powered experience - you can still hike that 14er - but sleep well, off the ground afterward.”

We need a broader definition of the outdoor consumer

“[Consumers] want hard adventure by day and soft adventure by night and that is absolutely a trend,” Hugelmeyer argues, and the Outdoor Industry Association agrees.

“Outdoor has essentially always been known as human powered,” said Samantha Searles, the director of research for the Outdoor Industry Association, but she and Hugelmeyer agree that the human-powered versus motorized distinction doesn’t matter to actual outdoor enthusiasts.
