The Panama Canal Museum as part of its series of mini exhibits during the "2006: Year of the Museum" will cooperate with SAMAAP (Sociedad de Amigos del Museo Afroantillano de Panama/Society of Friends of the West Indian Museum of Panama) to bring to the museum in Seminole an exhibit titled West Indians in Panama during the American Era. The exhibit will consist of photographs that illustrate the themes of- immigration, labor, education, religion and family as they pertain to the West Indian community in Panama. Karen Saum, a member of both SAMAAP and the Panama Canal Museum, has been coordinating the exhibit with Romy Lombardo, SAMAAP Museum Director, and the membership of SAMAAP in Panama and volunteers of the Panama Canal Museum in Seminole. She says, "It has been a moving experience working with these two communities that have so much in common, both descendants of those courageous people who built that Wonder of the World, the Panama Canal." This exhibit also coincides with International Museum Day on May 18 th , the theme of which this year is "Museums and Young People." All young people (and young at heart people!) are cordially invited to visit the Panama Canal Museum to see both this special mini exhibit from a museum in Panama and the Panama Canal Museum's permanent exhibit. Since 2001, the Museum has featured an annual calendar

with a specific theme each year. The calendars are sold through the museum store with proceeds going to the museum. We would like to highlight the talent of former Canal area artists in a future calendar (hopefully 2007). Therefore, if you are an artist who used to live in the Canal area and are willing to grant permission for us to use a photograph of your oil painting, water color, sketch, etc., please contact the Museum as soon as possible. The subject matter should relate to Panama, the Panama Canal, or the former Canal Zone. Please send either a hard copy glossy 8” x 10” photograph or a disc with CD resolution of 300 dpi JPEG or TIFF.

Museum Team participates in 2006 Walk to D’Feet ALS For the second year, the Panama Canal Museum fielded a team in the ALS

Walk to support President Emeritus, Chuck Hummer. The walk is

sponsored by the Florida Chapter of the ALS Association to raise funds for

research and patient care. ALS, also known a Lou Gehrig’s Disease in an

incurable neuromuscular disease. Chuck was joined by his wife, Sandra,

Kathy Egolf, Paul Glassburn, Gerry DeTore, Bob and Marguerite

Zumbado, Elizabeth Neilly and Shawn and Shannon Bales. The team

solicited donations and raised over $6,000 for the walk.

Out of the blue, Trustee Joan Ohman, received an email from an old friend, Peggy Huff, suggesting a fund raiser for the museum, “Would it be OK?” From that email grew a great grassroots fund raising project that can spread nation wide. The suggestion- have a Bunco party, invite all the friends in the local area, combine it with a covered dish pot luck, make it a fun party, and charge a $20 entry fee with all proceeds going to the museum.

The Museum Board, thrilled to get this spontaneous offer of support, said, ”By all means, go ahead. And the museum will provide some of the prizes from its Gift Store.” That started in motion a very successful event that combined a great social and fun game evening with food and refreshments. Zonian favorites, Johnny Mazzeti, ceviche and empanadas along with other goodies were served. What could be better?

The First Space Coast Bunco Party was hosted by Richard Lemon at his Dog 'n' Bone - British Pub, Cocoa Village. Peggy, with the help of Kathy McConnaughy and Fran Meyer, organized the event and it proved to be a true fun evening. The Winners of the 1st Space Coast Bunco Fund Raiser for the Panama Canal Museum are: Sheryl Alberga, Diane Croce, Laurie Simmons, Blythe Grossman. Janice Scott took the prize for the most buncos for the evening. Door prizes were donated by PC Museum, Joan Ohman, Joe & Bev Wood, Renee Krimminger, Diana Grimison, Janice Scott, Dennis & Peggy Huff, and the Dog 'n' Bone Pub.

The result; a $770 donation to the museum in the name of the Space Coast Panazonians getting them started on their first transit of the Museum’s Wall of Honor. On their first time out, the SCP are now at Gaillard Cut and headed for the Gold Coast “Bird Speed.”

They hope this will be an annual event and others across the U.S. and Panama will start their own Bunko tournament around the same week-end of the year. Maybe even have a Bunco Tournament at the Reunion! Peggy is willing to share what she did to put it together to anyone that wants to organize a tournament in their area. Peggy can be contacted by email at: [email protected]

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

One of the most rewarding aspects of being involved with the

museum for the past 8 years has been the opportunity to work with some truly dedicated and enthusiastic people striving to achieve a common goal – to preserve the history of the American Era of the Panama Canal.

The museum’s officers and members of the Board of Trustees work tirelessly and without compensation to carry out the numerous tasks and duties required to keep their and your museum going and growing. It is a tribute to their efforts that we have come so far in such little time.

Beyond that group, we are also fortunate that other individuals have come forward at various times with fund-raising ideas or to volunteer their skills, talents and creativity. A few examples of these are described below:

In 2004, Sarah Finkelstein came to us with her idea for creating a cookbook on Canal Cuisine. After

almost a year of hard work by Sarah and her team (Cissy Collins, Sis Medinger, Catherine Goodrich, Jerry Fields and Joey Zornes), the cookbook became a reality – and a huge success. Our first 500 sold out in three days at the Reunion. Our second printing has almost sold out and we have just ordered our third printing. As “Icing on the Cake,” the cookbook won first place (with a $3000 check for the museum) in the publisher’s annual nationwide cookbook contest! Last year, Cheryl Russell proposed a Mola exhibit for the museum. She canvassed the country to

gather a unique collection of Molas for our display. The exhibit was a rousing success! Now, Cheryl is working with Canal Zone and Panamanian artists to create a museum calendar of their works that will serve to preserve and acknowledge their contributions to the American Era. In April of this year, Peggy Huff and her "Blinky Bunco Babes" team came up with an idea to hold a

“Bunco” game as a Space Coast Fund-raiser for the museum. It was a great success and all who attended had a blast, so much so that they are already asking when they can do it again! June (Barlow) Reisz, working with Carlson-Wagonlit Travel Agency, came to us several years ago

with an idea for fund-raising cruises for the museum, which have proven to be very popular and have raised a lot of money for us. We plan to continue them and to keep looking for new and exciting destinations for our travelers. Lori (Stevenson) Snow is supporting the museum by donating a percentage of her proceeds from

Condor Outfitters Travel Agency on their tour-guided trips to Panama. These are but just a few examples of how creative and talented people can help the museum raise

much needed funds to keep our legacy going. If there are ways in which you can offer your time, talents or ideas in furtherance of our mission, we would love to have you on our team. I assure you, it is a very good feeling to be part of this extraordinary effort to preserve our history.

Born and raised in the Panama Canal Zone, Katherine E. Egolf attended Canal Zone schools, graduating from Balboa High School in 1961. She received a B.A. in 1965 from Western College, Oxford, Ohio, and a M.Ed. in 1968 from the University of New Hampshire. In 1973-1974 she attended the University of Texas at Austin on a sabbatical and participated in a program that involved the study and practice of school administration.

When Ms. Egolf returned to the Canal Zone to teach in 1967, she became the third generation of both her mother’s and father’s families to work for the Canal. In the course of her career there, she worked full-time as a teacher or administrator in four different elementary schools and Curundu Junior High School, taught music in eight elementary schools on both sides of the isthmus one year, and served as supervisor of instruction in all the U.S. elementary schools there for one year. In 1975-76 she was a representative to the Governor’s Advisory Committee on the Gifted and Talented; and she served as a teacher representative to the Advisory Council on Dependents’ Education, Department of Education, in Washington, DC, from 1981 until 1983, when she became a school administrator. At the time of her retirement in 1990, she had been Principal of Balboa Elementary School for four years.

Ms. Egolf’s outside-of-school activities during those years included membership in and service as president of the Isthmian College Club and the Isthmian Chapter of Phi Delta Kappa, an honorary educational fraternity. As a member and officer of the Isthmian College Club, she was instrumental in bringing book fairs to the Canal schools, which helped to fund scholarships for high school graduates there. She edited and co-edited the Phi Delta Kappa newsletter for many years and wrote the chapter on Balboa Elementary School for a 1979-1990 update of Phi Delta Kappa’s book on Schooling in the Panama Canal Zone. She also served as piano accompanist for a number of isthmian musical groups, productions, and events.

Since her 1990 retirement, Ms. Egolf worked in St. Petersburg, FL, for several years as a facilitator in the Great Explorations Hands On Museum and as a church pianist/organist. She has been active in the Mid-Pinellas Branch of the American Association of University Women, having served as its president in 1996-1998 and on its presidential steering committee now and in 2000-2001, and has been a member of the Pinellas Park Public Library Board since 1994. In addition to her work as a member of the Panama Canal Museum’s Board of Directors since 1998, her Panama Canal-related activities have included editing a book on the Union Churches of the Canal Zone and helping Donna Gillis research information on the small Canal Zone town of Gamboa in Washington, DC; Atlanta; and Panama.

Ms. Egolf has thoroughly enjoyed her work as the museum’s Collections Committee Chair and Vice President and Executive Vice President currently. “It is exciting being a part of our important mission to preserve the history of the Panama Canal and coming in contact so frequently with interesting and appreciative members and visitors. I want to thank all of you who are helping support the museum in so many ways,” Ms. Egolf says about her role with the museum.

Board Profile—KATHERINE E. EGOLF, Executive VP

In recognition of the Roosevelt Medal and its importance to honor the contributions of dedicated American workers, the museum established a Roosevelt Medal Certificate Program. Under the tutelage of trustee, J. Dorn Thomas, special custom certificates are available that list the medal holder, the number of his or her medal and the number of service bars, if any, are contained on the certificate along with the names of the descendent of the medal holder.

Certificates can be ordered directly from Thomas at the address below:

OUTREACH EFFORTS GROW Education a Main Mission

A primary function of any museum is to be an educational resource for the public. The outreach activities of the museum continue to grow with the establishment of the Speakers Bureau, organized museum visits by neighborhood and school groups and the traditional presence at the annual reunion of the Panama Canal Society. Additional initiatives to extend the outreach activities include organized luncheons, and special traveling exhibits to community centers.

Sun City Gatherings Continue

The second neighborhood luncheon at Sun City in Hillsborough County was held by museum volunteer, Cheryl Russell. Twenty eight attended this no-host pot luck where museum literature and a report of museum activities provided the theme. Cheryl says that the success of the first two Sun City luncheons makes it clear that this will be an excellent venue for one of the museum’s traveling exhibits.

Seminole Mall Exhibit a First

Trustee Gerry DeTore conceived of a traveling exhibit at the Seminole Mall. He coordinated the exhibit with the mall administration and the first major traveling exhibit outside the traditional presence at the Society reunion was held April 28-30 at the mall. The permanent exhibit of the history of the Panama Canal was carried and displayed at the mall. In addition, regular lectures on the history of the canal, videos were projected for the public. The Museum Gift Store was brought to the mall and staffed by volunteers. The three day event proved popular to mall visitors and interest in the artifacts and photographic exhibit panels mounted attractively in the mall food court. Advance publicity for the three-day event included window displays around the mall corridors and posters at each of the mall entrances. Hundreds of visitors enjoyed this initial educational foray into the community proving the value of this type of activity.

New Education Development Committee Formed

President Joe Wood established a new Education Development Committee and designated Trustee Al Lombana as its chair. Dr. Lombana brings a long career in education and the health industry in Florida. He brings his education with a masters and doctorate in education from Florida State University. The goal of the new committee is to broaden the educational outreach by the museum with an emphasis on the development of curriculum for grade and high school level students and to establish working collaboratives with local colleges and universities.

Museum Gift Store is popular feature of the Seminole Mall Panama Canal Museum Exhibit. Presentations were projected on screen to the right.

Entrance to museum exhibit is at the main entry to the Seminole Mall. Stein Mart Showcase has museum exhibit.

Main museum exhibit extends down side of the Seminole Mall Food Court.

THE PANAMA CANAL MUSEUM MISSION The mission of the Panama Canal Museum is to preserve the history of the American era of the Panama Canal (1904-1999). The museum collects artifacts, documents and other items of historical importance and interest, which are accessible in person and on the Internet. Its purpose is to enable research and education in the history of the accomplishments of the United States of America in the construction, operation, maintenance and defense of the Panama Canal as a service to the World’s maritime and naval communities in the twentieth century. It also collects, documents, catalogs, preserves, stores, exhibits, interprets and enables research on a variety of items illustrative of the lives and work of the Panama Canal workforce and supporting communities.
