The Craig Northrup Quintet was sonorous but subdued (as usual). Raja Guha Thakurta was recognized as the LGAA MJS 2009 People’s Choice Winner. Holly Van Hart was recognized as the LGAA Artist of the Year and Vernon Dittenbir was awarded the Second Place ribbon. The Los Gatos Art Association Newsletter January 9, 2010, 1-3pm Demonstration Artist Marian Gault www.flyingquill.com Watercolor and Calligraphy Marian, an LGAA Member, will demonstrate the art of beautiful writing. Also a watercolor painter, she will show how she often integrates the two art forms in the pieces she produces. She is a member of, and has taught at national conventions for the International Association of Master Penmen, Engrossers, and Teachers of Handwriting (IAMPETH). She also is a past president of Pacific Scribes, teaches classes locally, accepts commissions, and teaches workshops on various styles of calligraphy. During her demo Marian will give everyone an opportunity to try doing some calligraphy of their own. January meeting - Art Resource Table Clean out your art supplies and get rid of what you don’t want. You can sell it, donate it or give it away. Anything art related – books, paints, canvases, easels, frames etc. Pass unwanted items along and see if you can get a treasure from someone else. LGAA Fine Art Calendars 2010 will be available at the January meeting. They are also currently available at University Art in San Jose and Palo Alto, and the Queen’s Chest Gift Shops. After receiving a BFA, he moved to San Jose and worked as commercial artist and graphic designer for Lockheed Missiles and Space Co. and Eudyna Devices. His landscape painting is largely influenced by the works of Albert Bierstadt, Edwin Church, Thomas Hill, and Edgar Payne. He has entered many shows In Berkeley, Boise, Los Gatos,Yosemite National Park, and New York – as well as being published in the “International Dictionary of Modern and Contemporary Art” 2001/2002 in which he was awarded “Associated Academician” from the Academy of Verbano, Italy. Member NewsPastel painter Terri Ford was awarded Second Place and Third Place in the Landscape category at the Sierra Pastel Society 1st Annual Signature Members Exhibit. Two of her paintings were given Honorable Mentions in The Pastel Journal's Annual Competition and will be published in the March/April issue. In January Terri will judge the International Association of Pastel Societies Exhibit at the Brea Gallery in Brea, CA.

Deborah Matlack was awarded two Second Places and one HM for three paintings in the Sierra Pastel Society's Signature Exhibition. She was awarded the AirFloat Prize in the New Mexico Pastel Society's Exhibition.

Carole Rafferty won the Purchase Prize for the First Menlo College Paintout. Her plein air piece was purchased as the first in the college's permanent collection. As part of the prize, she will have a gallery show on the campus in January.

Donna Orme is showing work (by appointment only) at Art@Axis in San Jose.

Jeff Owen has made an exclusive agreement with Aunt Effie's Garden in Palm Springs to show and sell his sculptures starting in December. Jeff will be selling his sculptures at the San Francisco Flower and Garden Show from March 24th to 28th at the San Mateo Expo Center, and Indian Wells Arts Festival in Palm Desert from April 2nd to April 4th.

Peggy Hansen's solo show 'Bosque Spirits' will be featured in the front room at Michaels' on Main in Soquel through January 21.

Gary Coleman has abstracts and landscapes hanging through January at the Cafe Trieste in downtown San Jose. His work can be seen on a continuous basis at The Stone Griffin in Campbell, and at the Los Gatos Museum's Gallery.

Rochelle Carr has just published a fine art and poetry book: "Follow Your Heart Poetry" now available at Amazon.

Karen Garnett will be the Feature Artist January thru February at Naomi's Coffee & Tea in Morgan Hill.

Mark Woolbright has 3 etchings at the Triton Museum's "Statewide Drawing and Print Exhibition" through March 14. He also has work at the new Avenue Art Gallery in San Mateo.

Grace Tang has an art show of her montage paintings at the St. Mark's Episcopal  Church in Palo Alto through January 31st.

Carolina Mueller will be featured Artist of the Month at Gallery Saratoga in February.

Two of Jim Potterton’s impressionistic seascapes have been accepted into the Coastal Arts League’s 25th Annual Juried Show. The show will be up through December 30 at the CAL Gallery in Half Moon Bay.

Jim Potterton’s painting “Sur Surf”  won “Best Painting in Show” at the 25th Annual Coastal Arts League Juried Show. Jim also won an “Honorable Mention” for his painting “Sur Sun” at this Half Moon Bay exhibit.

OpportunitiesGloria Watson is looking for artists who would like to hang at the Saratoga Community Senior Center Approximately two months at a time.  The next hanging will be about the middle of December or beginning in January with a winter theme.  This room can take large paintings or grouping of smaller ones.  If anyone is interested they should contact me at [email protected], or 867-4757.

Karen Druker, art curator for the Town of Los Altos Hills would like to welcome members to an "Art Walk and Talk " with famed Architect/artist Goodwin"Goody" Steinberg at Los Altos Hills Town Hall , 10:30-12 noon on Thursday January 14, at LAH Town Hall , 26379 W. Fremont Road, LAH, as he explains the unique process by which he designs his oversize , computer generated original fine art prints. The process has been described as the perfect marriage of technology, art and music. He ties the 88 keys of the piano to his color selections.

January 4th – Picchetti Ranch & WineryTake Freeway 280 to the Foothill Grant Road exit in Cupertino. Travel southwest on Foothill Blvd. 3.5 miles (Foothill Blvd. changes names mid-point to Steven's Canyon Road). You'll travel through a residential section, pass Steven's Creek County Park, Stevens Creek Reservoir and Dam. Montebello Road will appear on your right. Travel up Montebello road 6/10th of mile to Picchetti Winery. The first left hand turn goes to the Picchetti Winery, the second, a very short distance away goes to a general parking area. The Winery does not open to the public until 11:00 am. OK to cross the split rail fence to paint. Lots of turn of the century winery buildings, small creek, tree lined hills and views of the valley.

January 11th – Mission San Juan Bautista, 9am to LunchOur return visit to this Historical Mission Town. 19th century buildings, Mission and Grounds to paint. Take 101 south ,well past Gilroy to Highway 156. Go South 3 miles to the Mission San Juan Bautista Turn 0ff. Follow to end and go right to Plaza Green in front of Mission, Allow 1 hour for Travel.

January 18th – Bernal-Gulnac-Joice Ranch – Santa Teresa ParkHistoric houses and barns with a California hills backdrop. Take 85 East to Cottle, go right to Santa Teresa left to Camino Verde Dr. Take a right and follow through neighborhood to end. Park on street.

January 25th – Home of Davie Stonesifer, 18000 Overlook Rd., Los GatosBeautiful Mission Style home with great garden and patios and ponds and all sorts of nooks and crannies. David and Larry hosted us twice in the past and this has become a club favorite. From Santa Cruz Ave. go west on Main to Bayview. Right on Bayview and left on Pennsylvania Ave. to Wissahickon go right then left on Overlook. David’s home is on left.

February 1st – Alviso, CA – 9am to Lunch at Maria’sFrom North 101, exit 237 East then exit onto Great America Pkwy, turn left at Yerba Buena Way, turn left at Lafayette St, continue on Gold St, turn right at E Taylor St. and meet in Alviso Marina Park, parking lot. There are levees between marshes and salt evaporation ponds. The Guadalupe River and Coyote Creek both travel north and meet the San Francisco Bay at Alviso. Turn of the century small town buildings, is a National Register Historic District. Because of its atmosphere resembling a small delta town, and many of the old early town structures, still in existence, the character of Alviso is unique. Maria Elena’s restaurant is known for wonderful Mexican lunches and is quite reasonable. Lunch there.

February 8th – Elkhorn Slough South of WatsonvilleBeautiful waterways looking back towards the west. Lots of color. Take Highway 1 to Watsonville. Go East on Riverside Drive to St. Porter Dr. take a right. It will become G12 or Salinas Rd. When Salinas Road curves back towards Highway 1 you will go left on Elkhorn Road. Follow past Kirby Park till you come to a parking lot on right. We will paint there.

February 15th – Guadalupe Oak Grove Park, Almaden ValleyOld limestone quarry, large oak grove, meadows, hiking trails and hilltop views! Take Almaden Blvd. south to Coleman. Go right, then left on Porto Alegra, right on Thorntree and right on Sterling Oak Dr. to Park entrance. This won’t look right until you park and walk into the park, past the parking lot and trees. It then opens up to hills, trees, rocks and trail vistas.

February 22nd – Carmel Mission, 3080 Rio Road Carmel, 9am – Noon to Sunset or OvernightContinue on Hwy 1 past Carmel to Carmel Valley Road, then Rio Road is the next right, proceed to 3080 and the mission, we will be in the parking lot. This site is a California classic subject as well as a staple image in the portfolio of most California Plein Air Artists. Paint in morning, if it’s foggy, paint anyway as it generally clears by 11:00 am; then after a short lunch paint in the afternoon for completely different light paths. Rooms for the 20th and the 21st at the Carmel Mission Inn (3665 Rio Road) run from $99.00 to 149.00. Email Sam Pearson …. to follow with additional information and details.

Open Juried Show ChairVoting Board Position This person coordinates the volunteers and activities between the Juror selection process and the Art out day of the show. You’ll find a lot of help in both learning the job and getting the volunteers.

Open Juried Show – Artist Reception CoordinatorThis is a one day event, Sunday March 28th. This person plans the drinks, tables, chairs, glasses etc. Perfect for the person who wants to help, but doesn’t have a lot of time.

Open Juried Show – “Food for Volunteers” Coordinator This is a two day event, Sunday March 21st and Monday March 22nd. This person plans the food and drinks for the volunteers. The Association pays for pre-made sandwiches, cookies, fruit, coffee, drinks etc. You do the ordering, shopping and pick-up and delivery. Perfect for the person who wants to help but doesn’t have a lot of time.

Data Manager for Juried Shows This person maintains and manipulates the data between art in-take and Show opening. The program we use is Microsoft Access. The database is all set up and ready to go. Training is available, but you will need your own computer with the Access program installed.
