OUR SUMMER FINALLY MADE ITDear Sisters and Brothers:

I hope each and every member in our Jurisdiction had a wonderful sum-mer. I thought for a while that we were never going to have any Summer.Even though it arrived a little later than usual, it did end up with some nicedry weather in our Jurisdiction.

I would like to report that I had a very enjoyable family vacation in Mauiin July. I returned to my office and as the saying goes, I was ready and rar-ing to go back to work. I hope that those Rebekah Lodges that did not hold

meetings the last two months are also ready and raring to go,to always work together for the welfare of our Order and liveby the three links of Friendship, Love and Truth.

I would like to thank all the Sisters and Brothers for theirattendance at our Assembly Session and hope that your reportsto your several lodges will show that we had a very productive

Session and were still able to have a little fun. We had a number of newSister Past Noble Grands who received the Assembly Degree and somefirst-timers also in attendance.

I would like to congratulate Sister President Lena Swetz and all of herOfficers, Representatives, Alternate Representatives, Past Presidents,Committee Members and Past Noble Grands who made our Sessions verysuccessful.

THE GARDEN OF LIFEI would like to wish speedy recoveries to all of our Rebekah Sisters and

Brothers who have had medical issues or hardships over the last fewmonths, and hope all of you can reach your goals and are back to your fullcapabilities in your own lives and the lives of others. You are all the beauti-ful flowers in the Garden of Life.

Gauge the value of your garden by your friends, your good deeds, andyour generosity. Make your time in the Garden of Life one filled with gold-en hours recalling the best and the satisfying. Forget about those temporaryshadows caused by clouds. Judge your life by your stars of attainment andthe joyful times. These represent breathtaking moments never to be forgot-ten. Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by themoments that take our breath away. We must open ourselves to the unex-pected as joy often results from surprise. Be loyal to your friends and asso-ciates; make understanding a constant in your life; stick with your valuesand priorities; have enough faith to surpass your doubts and fears; recallthe rights and forgive the wrongs; be kind to everyone; let confidence andcourage influence your decisions and acts; always see the golden hours ineach day with a thankful spirit and regard life’s shadows as temporary.

Be loyal and understanding, value your faith, forgive and be kind andyou will have a Beautiful “Garden of Life!”

Our summer seems to have gone byrather quickly, at least that’s the way Isee it. Let’s go back and try it again.I’m sure we could find lots more todo. The coast, here where we live, wasbusy with festivals, picnics, gather-ings, reunions, concerts and you nameit, we had it. The Washington StateInternational Kite Festival is always abig occasion here.

On a smaller scale, a big reunionwas held by a family that includes ourown Donna Merrill and Opal Eaton. The matriarch of this family is BessieBraschuk, who turned 101 in July. Sheis Donna’s mother and Opal’s sister.

Betty Pierce enjoyed family fromout-of-town for a week and they allkept busy visiting and enjoying eachother.

Sandy Thissell also had daughters,a son and grandchildren during thesummer. A fun time is always hadwhen there are grandchildren around.Sandy’s seem to be growing up sofast.

Cathy Kary welcomed a new great-grandson in August. She and husbandDean will be visiting often, I am sure.

We are sad to see Olney Patch andhusband Bernie move to California, but they want to be closer to familyand will enjoy some warmer weatherthan what we have. Olney hasn’t beenfeeling well lately and we hope beingnear family will boost her spirits.

Bette Snyder has been stayingclose to home, as her husband Sid hasnot been doing well. Sister BeverlyGilpin has been in a nursing home in

Astoria, Oregon for several weeks. She has been improving, according toher husband, Eldred. (Our last reportwas in August.) Sister Frances O’Neilis good one day and not so good thenext. She has been in and out of thehospital, but has been home most ofthe time lately. Aletha Miller sported abum leg and foot for the summer. Thereason won’t be mentioned. She isdoing much better now and seems tobe getting around pretty good.

One of our past members, CarlaSchmidt from Yuma, Arizona, washere in Long Beach in August for avisit and several of our sistersgathered for lunch at our golf courserestaurant, The Cove, for lunch. Therewere lots of laughs and smiles allaround. The food is good there, too.

We enjoyed all of our visitorsand put them to work. They, in return, put us to work finding all of ourerrors, making it a true “School of Instruction.” Thinking it was over,we realized that all of those “kitchen round tables” don’t improve thememory of how to do it correctly.

Our Treasurer has run into the problem of finding a bank that willtake small accounts with little activity, without large charges. She willcontinue to check on this and make a report next year.

Elected officers for 2013 are President Sharron Park, Vice PresidentMick Schwartz, Secretary Linda Meadows, and Treasurer Jewel Zeihen.Next year’s host lodge will be Chewelah Rebekah Lodge #162.

We recessed for lunch and enjoyed baked ham, salads, buns, freshstrawberries and strawberry parfait.

During the afternoon session, Butch and Barbara Reitan were honoredfor traveling the greatest distance.

Four Rebekah Assembly Past Presidents were in attendance includingBarbara Reitan, Yvonne Haugeto, Sandy Moon and Jean Hartill. And, ofcourse, Butch Reitan is a Past Grand Master.

The alter was beautifully adorned with an arrangement of daffodilsfrom Arlie Emerson’s flower garden.

Cards were sent to 12 members who were reported ill.Barbara and Butch Reitan presented a very nice Memorial Service

with help from several members who were present. Thank you!Yvonne Haugeto spoke and brought a message from the Rebekah

Assembly of Washington. We heard a report regarding the Home Board from Mick Schwartz.

The report was short as the spring Home Board meeting was scheduledfor April 27-28.

The Spokane Lodges invited us to their District Meeting to be held onthe first Saturday of October.

The Brothers and Sisters of Sunrise #189 honored 2012 DistrictPresident Nadine Johnston for her great job as President. She was givena hanging basket full of pansies.

The 2013 officers were seated by Chewelah #162 members. The hostlodge resumed the chairs and closed the meeting in the Rebekah Degree.

Salmon Bay’s May was wonder-ful. Their support of the celebrationof Norwegian Constitution Day waswell-received in the historicallyScandinavian neighborhood ofBallard in Seattle. In partnership withthe Ballard/Alki Odd Fellows,Salmon Bay Rebekahs supplied afree coffee and cookie table in frontof the IOOF Hall from 2 p.m. to 6p.m. Thanks to the NoreenLucas/Frances Zimmerman team, even the cookies were well coordi-nated and presented beautifully onplatters.

Sister June Robinson, back inlodge after her recent cancer hospital-ization. She even stayed after ourlodge meeting to help. Her warmhugs of greeting are still as strongand welcome as ever. Sister

Genie and Brother Jean Coston

came to help after Genie’schemotherapy was over for the day. They contributed M & M mini-bagsto the cookie table. By the way, theroof is finally back on their burnedhouse and it looks like they might behome by summer’s end.

The Norwegian CelebrationParade was at 6 p.m. andBallard/Alki, families and friendsregistered and joined in. Salmon Baythought they’d have to freeze leftovercookies, but never fear, all were goneby parade time!

Our regular meetings have beenrather uneventful. Minutes read, nobills, little correspondence.

Sister Betty Young brought thenews that Spokane Sister BlancheBerry had passed away. LaterSpokane’s Ramona Sister SelmaLindor called our Noble Grand andthey shared memories of a truly greatand very active member of the Orderwho lived up to her Rebekah pledge.

This report dates back to mid-May when we were preparing for thesummer break. Now, after many days of warm weather, it is about time tohit the ground running as lodge activities for the coming year will be onour schedules once again.

On May 15, Joani Wicklund, Director of Admissions at the Odd FellowsHome, spoke to our group and told us of the remodeling projects that havebeen completed over the last two years. Almost all of the rooms have beenremodeled. She also explained the criteria for eligibility regarding apart-ment admission. The amenities available for independent living are MiriamStreet Apartments with 50 units, the Clinton Street Apartments, as well asthose units in the Brick Building and Administration Building that are bothlicensed for those with disabilities. There are 108 residents receivingassisted living services, including meals and different types of care. Thosewho reside in the two care centersreceive skilled nursing. The EastCare Center has two private roomsthat are available for those comingfrom the hospital and who mayrequire Medicare services.

We appreciate Joani’s presentationwhich was enlightening and makesus truly proud to have the IOOFHome in our community.

Following the meeting, we allenjoyed refreshments served by AlcoCanfield, Rosemary Hicks, and ElsieWells.

We are happy to report that Alice Davidson is our newly-adopted Sister. Barbara Tvrz conducted a Memorial Service for our departed Sisters.

Those who passed away during this past year and were remembered in thelovely service are Pauline Patterson, Virginia Thomas, Vada Heimbigner,Virginia Braden, Lois Graybeal, Ruth Phillips, Marie Turnbow and RuthGibson. We also undraped the Charter that had been draped in memory ofMarie Pryor Johnson, Past President of IARA.

Our picnic was held on June 19 at the Clinton Street Picnic Shelterwhere we were joined by members of Enterprise and Bee Hive. There were25 in attendance and a variety of salads and desserts were enjoyed by all.

Even though we did not meet during the summer, Rose Ringhoffer’sproject of delivering flowers to Home residents was carried out weekly byRose and a few of our faithful members.

Please pray for those who continue to deal with illness, post surgeryhealing, or are facing surgery. Aramae Buckingham, Pat Grigg, JaneHanson, Jacqueline Klicker, Elsie Wells and Judy Zohner are among thosewho are appreciative of prayers on their behalf.

The date for our Homecoming Dinner has been set for Saturday,October 13 at the Miriam Street Fireside Room. A 4 p.m. dinner will becatered and jewels will be presented.

The Grandview Rebekahs hope allof you had a restful break and time toenjoy the Olympics. To me theOlympics is a fine example of whatone can do when you set your mind toit.

The Grandview Rebekahs havebeen busy working on an Old FashionTea in celebration of their 100thAnniversary. Our event will takeplace on Saturday, September 29 from1 to 4 p.m. at The Church of theNazarene in Grandview. Other activi-ties along with the Tea are a CakeWalk, Photo Booth and SilentAuction. We have had lots of funputting this activity together.

Other projects we are working oninclude Back-to-School. We have

been collecting school supplies forelementary students. Our sponsorshipof a T-Ball Team was very successful. This was the first year our team’s tee-shirts were in Rebekah colors.

I am sad to report we lost aRebekah Sister, Alma Davenport, inJune. She was a willing helper and sokind. She will be missed by all of us.

On a happier note, I am happy toreport that PNG Freda Keelin hasresponded well to her cancer treat-ments and is getting better everyday. Thanks for all your prayers.

Until next month, stay healthy andhappy.
