2. Worship in the Old Testament

  • SHACHAH (pronounced shah kah): to bow down; prostrate oneself.
  • ABAD (pronounced ah bahd): to labor or to work

3. Worship in the New Testament

  • PROSKUNEO (pronounced pros - coo- nay oh): to protstrate oneself; to bow down.
    • Matthew 28:9
  • SEBOMAI (pronounced seb oh my): to shrink away from; be in awe
    • Acts 16:14
  • LATREUO (pronounced lah true oh): to serve (This word is similar to the Hebrew word abad.)
    • Philippians 3:3
  • PHOBEO (pronounced foe beh oh): to fear
    • 2 Corinthians 7:1

4. THE WORDS USED TO DESCRIBE WORSHIP SEEM TO FALL INTO TWO CATEGORIES:

  • THEY SPEAK OF OURATTITUDES .
    • We are to be humbled in the presence of God and be filled with a sense of fear, devotion, and allegiance to Him because He is our master.
  • THEY SPEAK OF OURACTIONS .
    • Worship is the act of falling down before God and of committing ones whole self in service to God.
