Fishing Report
Steelhead fishing is still good on the
Root River. Tube jigs with wax worms
have been the best of choice. Fish are
in all parts of the river. In Kenosha
Harbor brown trout are biting golden
roaches, gulp minnows and Berkley
Flicker Shad. On the fox chain, crap-
pies are biting small minnows in the
channels.

Protecting Lake Michigan While protecting Illinois taxpayers
Article courtesy of Chicago Tribune Feb. 24, 2017
Contract fisherman Jim Dickau, 49, right, and Damian Seidemann, 18, throw back a common carp as they catch Asian carp for the
Illinois DNR at Hanson Material Service quarry on the Illinois River near Morris on Monday, August 23, 2016. Justin Widloe, 34, left,
natural resources coordinator with the Illinois DNR counts the fish. They were removing Asian carp for disposal.
(Zbigniew Bzdak / Chicago Tribune)
No one has a bigger stake in the fight to keep Asian carp and other aquatic invasive species out of the Great
Lakes than the state of Illinois.
For the last 25 years, under each succeeding administration, the Illinois Department of Natural Resources has worked in partnership with other state and federal stakeholders and sportsmen to successfully stall Asian carp migration more than 60 miles below Lake Michigan near Dresden Island, in the Des Plaines River south of Joliet. These efforts have reduced the number of Asian bighead and silver carp by more than two-thirds. To date, no Asian carp has successfully passed through the three Army Corps-engineered electric fish barriers located in the Chicago Area Waterway System at Romeoville.
Despite this irrefutable record of success in keeping Asian carp far away from our lake, on Feb. 28 the U.S. Army Corps
of Engineers is expected to unveil the "next phase" in its ongoing strategy to do what it already has done: Keep the
Asian carp out of Lake Michigan.
The Corps of Engineers is excellent at what it does; it builds things. Yet should the Corps' Brandon Road Tentatively
Selected Plan recommend, as expected, the construction of "an engineered channel, another electric barrier, water jets
and noise cannons, and the first-of-its-kind flushing lock system," the price will be steep. Current estimates range be-
tween $230 million and $270 million for construction, plus $8 million to $10 million in annual operation and mainte-
nance costs.

APRIL 2017
The Kenosha Sport fishing and Conservation Association is a non-
profit organization dedicated to the protection and proper utiliza-
tion of the Great Lakes resources. Established in 1969 by local
family fisherman, we continue to focus on conservation of the Great
Lakes. For over 40 years the K.S.F.C.A. has worked to support our
community and the Great Lakes through various activities and edu-
cational programs. Some current examples include: kids fishing
programs, fly tying classes, Pike river clean-up efforts, and stock-
ing Lake Michigan with over 40,000 Chinook salmon annually.
If you would like to support these activities, please contact us by
phone, mail, or email. We welcome anyone interested in becoming
a member. If you are not interested in becoming a member, but
would still like to support these important activities in our commu-
nity, we do accept financial donations.
