For most people, Pentecost marks the beginning (or birthday) of the church. It is the day that we remember the coming of the Holy Spirit to empower the disciples to go out and spread the message of God's saving grace, Jesus Christ. It is the single event that changed the disciples into apostles. A disciple is a student, someone who is learning at the feet of a master. An apostle is "one who is sent" - who takes the message he has heard, all that he has learned and goes out into the world to teach others. It was 9 o'clock in the morning when the disciples were gathered in the upper room. People often think that there were only 12 of them since Matthias had been added to the eleven. But scripture talks about 120 who gathered for prayer in the upper room. They were empowered and given the ability to speak in other languages, so that they could go out and to spread the word concerning Jesus Christ. From Jerusalem, the apostles spread out into all the known world, convincing and converting the people they met along the way. The color for the day is red indicating the Holy Spirit and to remind us of the flames that rested on each person's head. It also reminds us of the boldness with which they preached and that most of these apostles were eventually put to death for the sake of the gospel. Pentecost is a time of great rejoicing remembering that the Holy Spirit also empowers us to be bold for the sake of the good news of Jesus Christ. SUNDAY, JUNE 4TH. Sam and I have enjoyed visiting a variety of churches during our vacations from Boston to San Jose and even in Hawaii. As you visit churches around the country, please remember to bring home a bulletin to share with the office. It is always interesting to see what others are doing in their worship of God. Remember, also, to keep up your pledge. During the summer, the finances of the church often suffer as people are gone on their vacations and travels. It is much easier to stay up to date rather than playing "catch up" later.

Grace Episcopal Church

One God One Family One Table

Vision

Grace Episcopal Church seeks to deepen relationships with God, bring

individuals together into a family that builds up one another in love and support, and actively serve our

neighbors and community. Mission

In this family of faith God brings together individuals in all stages of

their spiritual life to form an inclusive family. As a family, we encourage

growth in relationships with God, others, ourselves, and the creation, in that we:

Practice invitation to God’s table,

Welcome and incorporate those who come,

Work together to worship the Lord in powerful liturgy,

Challenge, encourage and teach one another, and

Build one another up for ministry in and beyond the church.

Our Numbers:

As of April 30th.

From The Rector…

The Life-Changer

Francis Martin, professor of New Testament at the Dominican House of Studies in Washington, D.C., wrote this little book on how you can experience freedom, power and refreshment in the Holy Spirit. His principle claim is "The Spirit can do - what you can't." He claims that God wants friendship with us - each one of us. Friendship with God begins with God - not us. In the Bible, Abraham is the called by God to leave his home and his family and he is promised land and descendants. It is often debated why Abraham was called. I believe that God calls everyone - the stories that we hear are of the people who answered that call. There are still many people who are called, but never answer that call. Even today, God calls everyone. The Bible tells us, "While we were still sinners, Christ died for us." (Rom. 5:8). But how many actually answer that call? And if we don't answer that call immediately, are we lost forever? The answer to that is a resounding, "NO." You may have heard of St. Augustine. Augustine was the product of a pagan father and a Christian mother. He was raised in the Christian faith, but as a young lad, he was lured away from his Christian upbringing by the wiles of the world. He lived life pursuing sensual pleasures and illicit relationships until he was about 33 years old. The Holy Spirit finally broke through his debauchery, and drew him back into the heart of God. When we say, "YES!" to God's call, there should be a change in our life. Often it is a subtle change at first. When I finally consciously said, "yes," I didn't notice any change from several days. But the following Sunday morning I woke up early with a desire to go to church that day. It started as simply as that, and the Holy Spirit guided me slowly to grow in faith, to study God's word, and to follow Him, reaching out to those around me. Not everyone is called to go as far as I did, but everyone is called to do something. It might be as simple as writing encouraging messages to people around us, to cook meals for others, or to pray for those in need. It might be as simple as repairing a damaged handicap ramp at church, weeding the garden, or greeting people as they come to church. God calls us and the Holy Spirit guides us. Jesus Christ was and is the visible witness to the Father's love for us. Through Jesus Christ we see God reaching out to his broken and hurting people. Through Jesus Christ we see the sacrifice that God was willing to go through in order to draw us into his loving embrace. How have you answered the call of God? How has he blessed you through his loving presence?

Glory in God,

Mother Nan +

DEGEORGE FOOD DRIVE It’s time again for Grace Guild’s annual food drive for the veterans who reside at the DeGeorge Center in Houston. The Center’s census varies, but since it can accommodate 100 veterans, our food drive aims to provide food for that number for a month. You can start bringing your donations immediately to place on a designated table in the parish hall. During the first week of July, Phyllis and Dottie, with Danny’s help and that of anyone else who would volunteer (no offer turned away!), will load up the goods, and Phyllis and Dottie will deliver everything to a grateful staff and bunch of residents at the Center. Residents have microwaves and small refrigerators in their room, so donations can include microwaveable meals, canned meats and meals, snacks such as popcorn and cookies. Dottie will post a list of grocery items on the bulletin board in the parish hall to give you inspiration in your shopping for our vets during June.

Thanks to all for joining us in this effort. In

service to our vets: we can’t do enough, but

we can do something.

ALTAR FLOWER

DEDICATIONS

Dedications are being taken for altar flowers. Open dates are now available. The sign-up book is located in the Narthex. The cost is $35.

THE GATHERING

PLACE

Since coming to Grace, I have become involved in the Gathering Place minis-try. It is a joint ministry that reaches out to the victims of Alzheimer's and their caregivers. Once a month on the 3rd Wednesday, members of several local churches gather to care for, feed and entertain Alzheimer's patients so their caregivers can enjoy 4 hours of respite. I have been really impressed with the planning and care that goes into these days and the response from the wonderful people gathered. They laugh and sing and have a good time. Most are bright, responsive adults who appreciate the time and care given by the volunteers. Essentially this is like vacation bible school for adults. There is a different focus every month that is supplemented with crafts, music, games, and a devotional. This ministry could use more volunteers. There will be two training opportunities available in May. If you would like more information, talk to Sandra Green or Janice Bell. Or call Brenda Maust at 979-849-5051.

BIRTHDAY CAKE

SUNDAYS Don’t forget, the first Sunday of each month is Birthday Cake Sunday sponsored by the Rossanos’. Join us on June 4th. for cake and fellowship.

PRAYER AND MEDITATION

Wednesdays @ 6:00pm

Everyone is invited to join us for this time spent with the Lord. We will use a number of ways to connect with God including prayer beads, centering prayer, and lectio divina among others. Each session will run from 30 to 45 minutes long and will include a brief time of sharing before we pray. This is not intercessory prayer, but a time to connect with God on a personal level. If you have prayer beads, bring them. If not, we will have beads that you can use.
