• Nikolaus Otto, German engineer

• Born in Holzhausen an de Haide, 1832

• Developed the first functioning 4-stroke engine (Otto cycle)

Engine• One of the first successful

gasoline powered engine, produced in 1876

• Uses a spark plug to ignite compressed fuel/air mixture

• Regulated by a centrifugal governor controlling intake of fuel

• Water jacket around cylinder for cooling
