What is OSI Model?• The Open Systems Interconnection Model (OSI Model) .

• An open system is a set of protocols that allow any two different systems to communicate.

The purpose of OSI model

7 Layers of OSI Model7. Application Layer

6. Presentation Layer

5. Session Layer

4. Transport Layer

3. Network Layer

2. Data Link Layer

1. Physical Layer

• All

• People

• Processing

Tasks involved in sending letter

LAYER 7 – The APPLICATION Layer

The top layer of the OSI model

Specific services:

networked file transfer

mail services

directory services

LAYER 6 – The PRESENTATION Layer

It is concerned with the syntax and semantics of the information exchanged between two systems.

The presentation layer is responsible for translation, compression, and encryption.

LAYER 5 – The SESSION Layer This layer is Responsible for :

1. initiating, maintaining and terminating sessions

2. security and access control to session information .

3. dialog control and synchronization.

LAYER 4 – The TRANSPORT Layer

The transport layer is responsible for the delivery of a message from one process to another.

Provides acknowledgements of successful transmissions and requests resends for packets which arrive with errors

LAYER 3 – The NETWORK Layer

The network layer is responsible for the delivery of individual packets from the source host to the destination host.

Responsible for route transmissions between computers.

LAYER 2 – The DATA LINK Layer

Handles special data frames (packets) between the Network layer and the Physical layer

At the receiving end, this layer packages raw data from the physical layer .

At the sending end this layer handles conversion of data into raw formats.

LAYER 1 – The PHYSICAL Layer

This layer manages the interface between the computer and the network medium .

Converts bits into electronic signals for outgoing messages

This layer define the direction of transmission

OSI Model vs. TCP/IP Model

Acknowledgement

We are very much thankful to ourfaculties of the EETP program; they taught usevery topic regarding the OSI Model andinspired us to make this short presentation.

Also, we want to thank our college Professorswho helped us to come up with thispresentation.
