The World and India before Sri Guru Nanak Dev Jee Maharaj....

Caste System Brahman – scholars/pundits…had sole monopoly over the scriptures. They mis-used this knowledge for their own personal gain at the expense of bleeding the poor dry of their little earnings

Kshatry – Warriors…the protectors of India. They weren’t allowed to recite the scriptures but were allowed to listen to them. They did as they were told by the Brahmans

Shudra – Pesantry…they weren’t allowed to read or listen to the scriptures and lived in submission to the Brahmans of physical fear and fear that they would be condemned to bad karma

Vaish – Untouchables…they too couldn’t read or listen to the scriptures but they were considered the low lifes of the times and had to keep hidden from the rest of the world out of shame of their caste and did all meagre tasks.

Women in Indian Society....Were the property of men and the life of a woman was only as long as her husband was alive, otherwise she was a burden on societyHer sole aim was to serve her husband and childrenIrrespective of her caste, she could not attain salvation until she was born as a manIf her husband was to die before her, she was to jump into the funeral pyre of her husband (sati) as she was NOTHING without her husband

Dharma was now established on its four feet and all the four castes (through fraternal feeling) were converted into one caste (of humanity).

Guru Nanak came to redeem the Kalyug.(23)

Power for Humanity Guru Nanak came to end the suffering of the defenceless.

He gave the common man/woman hope and taught them that they have the power to take their own rights. Not only did he teach them, but he showed them!

The real spirit of religion (Hindu/Islam) was crushed by ritualism and the hearts of the people were filled with falsehood cunningness, selfishness and greed. Guru Nanak came to end falsehood and hypocrisy

As a Sikh you were BORN TO STAND OUT and be a beacon of light in this dark world.

What does Nanak Naam Chardikala, teraa bhanaa Sarbaht dah Bhalla mean?

Nanak asks for 'Naam' (name of God) with which comes well being, happiness and

positive spirit and with your blessings, Lord may everyone in the world prosper and be in

peace"

The Sikh concept of "Sarbaht dah Bhalla" which means "blessings for everyone" or literally "May everyone Prosper".

This statement is repeated by all practising Sikhs at least twice daily (if not more) as part of their Nitnem (daily prayers). This concept is central to Sikhism and forms a very important and essential role in the religious

philosophy of the Sikh Gurus.

Scientific Study on Group MeditationOne of the most famous scientific studies on the effects of group meditation was conducted by the National Demonstration Project to Reduce Violent Crime and Improve Governmental Effectiveness. The study brought approximately 4,000 participants in the Transcendental Meditation programs to the United States national capital from June 7 to July 30, 1993. In less than 2 months time, the effects of the group meditation had reduced violent crime in Washington D.C by 23%. And based on their statistics, if the program had continued with increased participation, they estimated they could have reduced the violent crime down by a whopping 48%!

Chaupai Sahib The Bani offers protection and security and many Sikhs recite this Bani to gain spiritual safety and defence from external and internal enemies, worries and afflictions.

The Gurmukhi text is very powerful and gives one self confidence and an upbeat feeling.

This Bani gives one the feeling of reliability and dependability on the Lord.

If one has negative feelings and a lack of confidence in the future, one should recite this Bani to get an instant boost.

A Buddhist perspective....

In Tibet, Guru Nanak is revered as an emanation of Guru Padmasambhava. Many of our pilgrims visited Amritsar and other holy places which they looked upon as equal in importance to Buddha-Gaya.

They always said that the Sikhs treated them with great respect and were very hospitable: " as our expression goes, they bowed down to their feet.“ It seems that the Sikhs really practice the doctrine of their religion; perhaps they are the only ones who give such wonderful dana to travellers.

Most Tibetans know that Guru Nanak visited Tibet, and the mystical ideas of our two religions are very similar. I have noticed that the Sikhs never worship images in their shrines, but that there is in the centre the book (living Guru), the Guru Granth Sahib. In our tradition, one of the last things that the Buddha said was that in the dark age after his death he would return in the form of books. "At that time," he said, "look up to me and respect me."

Both Guru Nanak and the Buddha said to their followers that the real nature of the universe should not be limited by the idea of personal god and gods. Those who made offerings at their shrines should remember that the whole universe was the power offering, offered before and to itself.

In conclusion.....
