Os Arianos invadiram a India, por volta de 2000 a.C. e derrotaram os nativos Dravidianos. Os Dravidianos foram os fundadores da civilização Indiana. Os Arianos aprenderam com os Dravidianos dominados e criararm uma nova cultura, hoje conhecida como Civilização Hindu. Para perpetuar a escravidão do povo nativo, os Arianos criaram o sistema de castas e então os excluíram da nova sociedade. Os Arianos chamaram os nativos de shudras, que quer dizer escravos.

CASTAS E SUB-CASTAS
Um levantamento antropológico realizado nos anos 1985 a 1992 consta a existência de 2800 comunidades distintas, cada uma representando uma casta diferente na India. As castas são subdivididas em sub-castas conhecidas como Gotras ou jatis.

AS NORMAS GERAIS DO SISTEMA DE CASTA
O estado social de um indivíduo na sociedade é determinado pela casta na qual ele nasceu. A pessoa nascida numa determinada casta carrega o nome da casta no seu nome próprio.Ele é sujeito a obedecer os regulamentos internos da sua casta na vida cotidiana.A posição social de um indivíduo é fixada pela sua hereditariedade e não pela sua qualificação, capacidade pessoal ou consideração material.Os pais escolhem as esposas com as quais seus filhos vão casar, dentro da mesma casta e sub-casta.

A CRENÇA DOS HINDUS
A religião Hindu acredita na existência de muitos Deuses, porém aceita somente um Deus supremo.
Brahma, Vishnu e Shiva não são três Deuses independentes, mas três aspectos diferentes do mesmo Deus Supremo, que cuida dos processos de criação, proteção e transformação do universo.
Os Deuses locais, venerados nas diferentes comunidades são tão respeitados quanto a trindade: Brahma, Vishnu e Shiva, posto que cada um atende a propósitos específicos.

DIFERENÇA PRINCIPAL ENTRE AS CLASSES SOCIAIS
Brahmin, kshatria e vaisha possuem o direito de praticar rituais religiosos e espirituais. Eles são iniciados e purificados no primeiro mês de vida, então são reconhecidos como nascidos duas vezes.
Os intocáveis e os shudras são excluídos dos rituais espirituais e não têm privilégio de passar pelo ritual de purificação.
