THE OREGON FEB EXECUTIVE FORUM:
VETERANS’ EMPLOYMENT Many new initiatives and resources have been launched in recent years to help veterans
integrate back into the workforce after their service to our nation. Still, they seem to meet
obstacles while looking for jobs and at times adjusting to work life. It is up to us as federal
employers to do everything we can to assist them to be successful.
With this in mind, the Oregon Federal Executive Board is proud to present an Executive
Forum on veterans’ federal employment. The forum will include a featured presentation by a
nationally known expert, stories of employment challenges shared by veterans, and a panel
discussion addressing questions about federal veterans hiring and workplace challenges.
Featured Speaker:
Suzanne Best, Clinical Psychologist, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) expert
and co-author of Courage After Fire: Coping Strategies for Returning Iraq and Afghani-
stan Veterans.

The Pacific Northwest Combined Federal Campaign will officially kick-off the 2014 Campaign
on September 1st! Annual Campaign Coordinator Training will be held throughout Oregon in September, so be sure to
check the official website to see when training is scheduled in your area. Along with e-giving platforms for every federal
office, the CFC is proud to debut “Universal Giving” this year nationwide. This will allow donors to now give to Local
Approved Charities in any CFC in the country. Please check the online databases on the official website for listings of
Local Approved Charities outside of the Pacific NW CFC. We look forward to a fun, energetic, and successful campaign!
Message from the CFC Chair
It is time to kick off the 2014 Combined Federal Campaign! This year we are all going to focus on
opportunities to Be Everyday Community Heroes, both within our own community and across the
world.
I am calling all of us to look around and see how we can be heroes, no matter what the scale,
and to try to make the world around us a better place.
I know that we can all find an area of need that touches our hearts and that allows us to Be
Everyday Community Heroes, providing positive support and assistance to that organization and
community. It does not take much to make a difference, and I would ask that all of you thought-
fully consider donating to a worthwhile cause of your choice.
In the spirit of this year’s campaign, I would also remind you that we all can make a difference in the lives of those around
us with the gift of time. So please, look for ways to make a difference for the better, no matter how small, and “be the
change you wish to see in the world.”
“Be an Everyday Community Hero”
Respectfully,
Captain Patrick A. Ropp, Commanding Officer , United States Coast Guard, Marine Safety Unit Portland

Want more training opportunities?
Check out the Oregon FEB’s new Training Exchange
Calendar on our website! It is located under the
“Training” menu item at the top of the Home page.
This calendar features training opportunities not only from
the Oregon FEB, but also those offered by various federal
agencies or Oregon FEB partners. It provides:
a place where a federal agency can post an internal
training event with extra seats they’d be willing to offer
to other federal agency employees.
a place where federal employees can explore vari-
ous training opportunities for their own professional
enrichment.
The direct link to the calendar is http://www.oregonfeb.us/
training-exchange-forum/
The training exchange is still in it’s introductory stage of
development, so check back often for new additions!
If your agency has training opportunities to share, please
contact our office or go to the training exchange web page
for instructions.

The Oregon FEB looks back at FY14
Federal Executive Boards (FEBs), established by Presidential Directive in 1961, are a forum for communication
and collaboration among federal agencies outside of Washington, DC. Approximately 85 percent of all federal employ-
ees work outside the National Capital Region. Federal programs have their impact largely through the actions of the field
representatives of the departments and agencies. The National network of 28 FEBs serves as the cornerstone for strate-
gic partnering between federal agencies and other levels of government, non-profits and other stakeholders.
The Oregon Federal Executive Board’s mission is to Create value to the public by fostering communication, coordi-
nation and collaboration with Federal, state, and local government agencies.
FEBs are required to focus their efforts in three primary initiative areas, noted below. Many of the Oregon FEB’s
achievements would not be possible without the dedication and commitment of the federal employees and other part-
ners who volunteer their time, talents and resources. They serve on various committees and planning teams, have led
training sessions, and have provided financial or other support to FEB activities. The Oregon FEB is proud of and grate-
ful for their contributions.

Ready Report Emergency Preparedness Announcements and Activities
SEPTEMBER IS NATIONAL PREPAREDNESS MONTH!
“Be Disaster Aware, Take Action to Prepare”
The Ready Campaign established four universal building blocks of emergency
preparedness: Be informed, Make a Plan, Build a Kit, and Get Involved. Ameri-
ca’s PrepareAthon! builds on this foundation by encouraging millions of Ameri-
cans to focus on a simple, specific activity that will increase preparedness.
America’s PrepareAthon! a new national community-based campaign for ac-
tion that focuses on increasing emergency preparedness through hazard-specific drills, group discussions and exercis-
es. National PrepareAthon! Days are held every spring and fall. During National Preparedness Month we ask you, your
family, community and workplace to take action by planning a National PrepareAthon! Day on or around September
30th. We recommend using digital media tools as a way to promote National Preparedness Month, September 1st-
30th.

Labor Day - Monday, September 1st
Labor Day is a holiday in the United States dedicated to workers. The intention of the holiday is to
recognize the contributions that laborers make to the country as a whole. The public holiday always
falls on the first Monday in September. The first federal observation occurred in 1894, however, the
first Labor Day observed in a state was in Oregon in 1887. Most federal employees and schoolchil-
dren are given the holiday off. There is no delivery of mail, but many businesses choose to stay
open for Labor Day.
