welcome to ou r wedding issueTheres nothing quite like a wedding to stir the emotions. The ex-citement, anticipation, first glimpse of the dress and thats just the guests! The one thing you can be sure of is no two weddings are the same. With the enormous choice of venues, florists, photographers, and bridal wear designers out there all ready to give your special day that je ne sais quoi, planning a wedding can be a minefield. Thankfully, this special issue of The Oracle features the crme de la crme of wedding suppliers in the local area. Find our more on our double page feature (p20 & 21). But thats not the only reason this issue is so special. We are delighted to bring our magazine to the good people of Hartley Wintney and Winchfield, as we double distribution to 5,000 homes and businesses. This issue is now even bigger and better than before with a total of 40 pages of local news, events and information. Read our food review of Bel & the Dragon on page 6 & 7 to see what this new Odiham High Street eaterie has to offer. If youre looking for a new challenge, then the recently launched Jay Archer Floral Design Flower School (p30 & 31) has courses to suit all ages and abilities. And if you fancy messing about on the river, then Karen at Galleon Marine (p35) tells us about narrowboat holidays on Basingstoke Canal. We hope you enjoy this issue. • 5A group of Tweeters are clubbing together in a bid to sponsor a local football team - Hart-ley Wintney FC - while sending out a mes-sage of love for the Hart area.

Hartley play in the Combined Counties Pre-mier League and the wannabe-sponsors, who started off as a bunch of people chatting on Twitter, have set a fundraising target of 1,900 to enable them to sponsor the clubs shirts for the next season.

KeepHartBeautifuls Graham Stacey explained, A few of us were tweeting about the plans to concrete over Winchfield, which we think would be a travesty for such a beautiful little village, and we came up with a bit of a mantra; to remind people to Keep Hart Beautiful.

It soon became a Twitter hashtag, and we re-alised a lot of people were thinking the same. Then the idea came about that perhaps we could pass on the mantra beyond social media, and what better way to do so, than to spon-sor our local team? We are excited about the prospect, and believe its a win-win situation.

It seems that people from all walks of life, many with no connection to the area, agree. Graham asked a few people to get involved via Twitter and had a great response.

Residents, local councillors, football fans, en-vironmentalists and even a couple of Hamp-shires Election candidates all chipped in.

He admitted it was getting hard to cope on the social media site alone, so they called on the voluntary offers of help from individuals to quickly set up a logo and website.

After fourteen cash pledges within the first few hours on Twitter, organiser Graham is hop-ing the website and the new Kickstarter site will help attract more sponsors.

KeepHartBeautiful have set themselves a tar-get of 1,900 to sponsor the first teams shirts for the season and they have made a healthy start towards reaching it.

Of course, they still need more donations if they are to make it happen anything from 5 to 500 would help get them to where they would like to be.

Fundraiser Graham promises a warm glow awaits anyone who helps them get there: In return for your contribution, we can guaran-tee everyone a warm glow as they will be safe in the knowledge that they helped Keep Hart Beautiful. In addition, they will receive a men-tion in our Hall of Fame on the website.

Companies, pubs, footy fans and, of course, lo-cals are encouraged to GET INVOLVED!

Not only is it a great message to put out there, but it also helps a local team to progress and get the most out of their sport.

Who knows, if we were to hit 5,000 maybe the club could sign that star striker that gets them to Wembley, with our message across their shirts of course! If you are interested in pledging to help KeepHartBeautiful reach its target, visit keephartbeautiful.co.uk Tweet @MisterGLS or donate at www.kickstarter.com/projects/1141204679/keep-hart-beauti-ful

    The (Keep Hart) Beautiful Game

  • I was excited to learn that the boutique restaurant chain Bel & the Dragon was opening a new outlet in Odiham. Being a Reading girl born and bred, I was a fan of the one at Blakes Lock and have dined at the restaurant in Cookham. Having lived in this neck of the woods for the last five years, I was more than happy to give the new team on Odiham High Street the chance to preach to the converted.

    buzzing with pre-dinner customers

I imagine many of you will remember The George before it closed. For those who dont, this Grade-II listed building is rather striking. On entering, youre hit with a seductive blend of the old and the new. Intricately carved wooden panels and original features dating as far back as 1540 rub shoulders with shabby chic furniture and cosy, classic couches and soft furnishings. It was a Friday evening and after a long week we were in the mood for cocktails. The bar was gently buzzing with pre-dinner customers and others whod merely popped in for a drink to celebrate the weekend. As someone who enjoys a cocktail (or two) the ones at the Bel & the Dragon definitely deserve a mention. On this occasion I tried something new, the Elderbubble, a refreshing aperitif made with vodka, elderflower, and lemon juice topped with Champagne, which I highly recommend.

On the night we were there, I couldnt find fault with the waiting or bar staff: cool, calm and knowledgeable. Theres no denying its a professional outfit streamlined within an inch of its life. Our friendly waiter recommended the langoustines on a bed of watercress and samphire to get us started, which arrived, rather theatrically, on a platter of dry ice, much to our titillation. Juicy, plump and fresh we enjoyed getting our fingers dirty. The fishy theme continued with starters of light, crispy-coated Cornish whitebait served in chip shop

paper, and a mountain of pink peppercorn squid with sweet chilli jam. Marinated beetroot and burrata with basil pesto and pine nuts was fresh and creamy, but too much cheese for my dining companion who would have preferred a slice of sourdough bread instead. Mains were served on rustic wooden boards (nice touch); chargrilled veal chop was tender and the zucchini frites a revelation. Sirloin steak served rare was pink and bloody (just how I like it), and thrice cooked chips did exactly what they said on the tin. Serious food envy kicked in when Pollys roasted suckling pig with crispy crackling and spiced apple chutney arrived. Im salivating just thinking about it. Portions are generous and we certainly didnt need the avocado, bacon and spinach salad, but Id certainly have this for lunch the dressing was delicious. Even now, I cant quite believe we squeezed in dessert, but hey it was a Friday. By this point, the pre-dinner cocktails and bottle of fruity Burgundy were working their magic, so the mutual appreciation of the tiramisu and the gooey gluten free chocolate nemesis with salted caramel ice cream was close to orgasmic. At 6 a pop, theyre definitely worth holding out for.

couldnt find faultAfter dinner, we ended the night back in the bar (now heaving with Odihams great and the good) to sink into a sofa and sip on an Espresso Martini. If only wed booked a room for the night. Sigh.

Bel & the Dragon isnt the cheapest dining option in the area, but thanks to the quality of the food and drinks, the amenable service, ambience and finishing touches, you wont begrudge spending a single penny.

Upper back painUpper back pain is a very common complaint. In my experience the majority of upper back pain occurs as a result of short/tight Pectoralis muscles. One of the worst treatments for upper back pain is a back massage alone. A useful stretch for upper back pain is a chest stretch. Stand in a doorway and place your arm against the frame (as in the picture). Turn away slightly and hold the stretch for 60 seconds. Then stretch the other side. You should feel the stretch at the front of the hip. Be careful never to stretch when cold and never stretch if painful.

  • Jenny Knight writes and performs personal ceremonies. Here she tells us what being a celebrant is all about.

Jenny, what exactly is a celebrant?A celebrant is a fully trained officiant; a creative and confident professional that has the skills to design and conduct bespoke ceremonies.

What ceremonies do you perform?I currently conduct weddings, baby namings and vow renewals across Surrey, Hampshire and Berkshire.

Can you perform a legal marriage?I can in the USA, Scotland and Wales, but sadly not yet in England. With a celebrant-led cer-emony you separate your legal signing, and then hold your celebrations whenever and wherever you like! You can still walk up the aisle, exchange vows and rings, and retain the look and feel of a traditional wedding in terms of format and content. Did you know that George Clooney used an officiant at his wedding, and that Ian McKellan and Benedict Cumberbatch have both officiated wedding ceremonies? I am in very good company!

What are the benefits of using a celebrant? There are many, but the key benefits include being able to marry wherever you like and at any time. You are therefore not restricted by registrars availability, or indeed limited to licensed venues. Why not marry on the beach, in woodland, or overlooking your favourite view? What about a festival themed wedding in a field, or saying your vows in a hot air bal-loon? You really can have your dream wedding, and include as many personal elements as you wish. With a celebrant, you would have a pre-wedding meeting to discuss your ideas and

plans, you then sign-off on the script once you are completely happy with it, and also have the freedom to include any traditional, religious, or indeed quirky elements you wish.

Do you perform ceremonies at any local venues?Yes, I was at Tylney Hall in Hook in April, and at beach and barn locations across the county in the coming months, including the beautiful Tournerbury Estate on the South Coast. Baby naming ceremonies are often held at home in their own gardens, so there is a lovely variety of settings throughout this year.

What are your fees? These vary depending on what type of cer-emony you are booking, but my fees currently start at 295 for a baby naming, and 495 for a wedding. My fees are all at a lower price-point than the local registrars (who can charge around 550 no matter what the ceremony), so I guess this is also a benefit.

Visit Jennys website www.knightceremonies.co.uk for more details or keep up-to-date on Facebook www.facebook.com/knightceremonies.

  • Fall down the rabbit hole at Jay Archers Flower School

An exciting new floristry school that aims to challenge the status quo of traditional flower arranging has just opened outside Odiham.

At the helm is award-winning wedding and special event florist, Jay Archer, who hopes the school will inspire and empower students interested in floristry as a career or hobby.

As one of a new generation of exciting floral designers, Jays distinct style has been described as natural, abundant and eclectic, with an emphasis on home-grown, seasonal and locally sourced flowers, quirky textures and old-fashioned scents.

Her work has graced the pages of national wedding magazines and in 2012 Jay was the winner of the Hitched Breakthrough Award for Best New Wedding Florist. Last year, she was shortlisted for three awards: New Covent Garden Market Awards Florist of the Year, Perfect Wedding Florist of the Year, and the National Wedding Awards. Naturally, this has does wonders for her profile and kept the phone ringing off the hook, but Jay isnt a woman to rest on her laurels.

So how does a 27-year-old with a husband (Jay married long-term partner, Jamie, last September), two stepchildren, a boisterous pooch named Bobbi, and an expanding business, find the time to open a flower school?

Jay is modest about her achievements: I do it for the love, she tells me. Working with flowers, nature and being creative is all Ive ever wanted to do, and I just feel so blessed to do exactly what I love every day of my life.

Sometimes I find myself stopping the van by the side of the road, especially around here where the countryside is so pretty, just to breathe in the air and inspiration, and think how lucky I am.

Its this passion and zest for flowers and fauna that Jay wants to ignite in her students at the Flower School:

We tell them, forget everything you thought you knew about flower arranging and fall down the rabbit hole.

Ive spent a long time devising courses that will challenge and reinvigorate existing florists as well as inspire new ones. Were trying to create something really fresh and exciting with the Flower School. Well be working with predominately oasis-free methods, something practically unheard of on most courses, and theres an emphasis on locally sourced and British-grown flowers.

Its not just the natives who are seduced by Jays often eccentric, but altogether English, design aesthetic. When the Flower School officially opened this week, the first bookings were from America and Ireland.

So has the transatlantic fame gone to her head? Not in the slightest, she reassures me. Im still so thankful that people love what I do. Its the biggest compliment and I just hope this continues as my own style develops.

With her feet firmly on home soil, Jay is a keen supporter of the British Flower Industry and champions many UK growers. To raise awareness, shes partnered with two of the industrys major players, Claire Brown at Plant Passion, and Rosbie Morton, owner of The Real Flower Company.

Theres such a wonderful community of growers in Britain but due to high energy costs, supermarket price pressure and cheap imports from countries including Holland, there seems to be an apathy towards British flowers.

Wedding florists, in particular, should use this as an opportunity to really support UK growers and recommend seasonal alternatives to brides who insist on peonies in November. There are so many wonderful and unknown varieties of flora and fauna, as well as exciting grasses and even moss, that can be used to create dramatic, beautiful arrangements. Its just that many people arent aware of the options.

Messing about on the riverKAREN MCCAFFREY TELLS US MORE ABOUT LIFE ON THE CANAL AT GALLEON MARINE.

Tell us about Galleon Marine.Galleon Marine is a small boatyard on Colt Hill with a fleet of four narrowboats offering self-drive holidays on the Basingstoke Canal. In addition, we have rowboats, kayaks and traditional Canadian style canoes to take out for an hour or so to explore the canal, its wildlife and the countryside at close quarters. The more adventurous can go out for half or full days. Tea, coffee, snacks, cold drinks and ice creams are served from the kiosk, now named The Winding Hole. We have an interesting herb garden and a canal-side picnic area with undercover seating for less sunny days, and secure, CCTV protected boat storage.

What inspired you to start the business? We took over the business in August 2014. Having spent many happy times on the Oxford Canal and the Kennet and Avon, we thought it would be great to run our own narrowboat business. The scenery, the wildlife, the gentle activity, the interesting people you meet, and the tranquil water are a tonic and a recipe for inspiration. But it seemed like an impossible dream until we spotted Galleon Marine for sale just by chance on the internet.

Whats great about narrowboat holidays?A narrowboat break is a great holiday for all ages and families and can be whatever you want it to be. You have the independence of camping but with a well equipped kitchen, bathroom and heating. You have a means of transport which takes you through a variety of scenery, towns and villages with the flexibility of mooring up for a while to buy supplies, visit tourist attractions, go to a pub or explore by foot. Or you can just sit and read a book in a prime location by the water surrounded by wildlife.

What is there to see along the canal? Anywhere to stop for lunch?Along the route pubs include: The Barley Mow, Winchfield, The Exchequer in Crookham, The Fox and Hounds in Fleet, as well as a bounty of pubs and restaurants in Fleet town centre. Further afield is The Swan, The Kings Head and many more. Weve heard the Alpine Snowsports centre in Aldershot, The Canal Centre in Mytchett, Military Museums in Aldershot, and the steam railway in Frimley are all worth a visit.

What do you love about living and working in Odiham? We are very happy living in Odiham. It has a warm and traditional feel thanks to all the people actively working behind the scenes to create a well looked after, organised environment with plenty of opportunities for everyone to get involved. We feel well supported by the local community but particularly Accessible Boating, The Waterwitch Pub, The Basingstoke Canal Authority, and The Basingstoke Canal Society.
