GOVERNMENT CUTS COULD RESULT IN RAPID RISE OF SUPERBUGS

Leading biohazard decontamination specialists Kays Medical has warned that funding cuts could ultimately be responsible for a rapid rise in fatal infections such as NDM-1, C. diff and norovirus.

Body uids such as blood, vomit and urine require a proven cleaning protocol which meets COSHH guidelines to guarantee that the site of the spill is cleaned effectively and can be certi ed as hygienically safe. However, many organisations are still employing cleaning methods which can spread potentially infected spills rather than containing them. This, coupled with a potential corner cutting mentality sparked by government cuts could have drastic implications.

David King, national sales and marketing manager of Kays Medical said: In the current climate buyers or managers are likely to be much more inclined to cut corners on existing products and cleaning practice rather than introduce new products or review current practice.

Cost cutting drives could easily result in cleaning solutions being diluted beyond their recommended limits or cleaners being given unachievable targets. With our research showing that using outdated methods can leave the risk of infection present and cost more, now is the time for organisations to think smart and embrace new technologies if they want to save money and reduce infections.

Using outdated cleaning methods such as a mop and bucket or paper towels not only risks spreading infection and causing cross contamination but can actually also prove to be more expensive than employing a system designed speci cally to cope with biohazards. For example, new research by Kays Medical into the use of the mop and bucket in the NHS has shown that decontamination cleaning can take an extra 20 minutes and cost 32p more per clean up than when a cleaning operative uses a speci cally designed spill kit and biocidal disinfectant cleaner.

With the Control of Substances hazardous to Health Regulations Regulation 2002 (COSHH) stating that employers must do all possible to prevent or control exposure to biohazards, there may be many companies who are failing to protect their employees and the public and so are risking expensive litigation.

Study backs chest compressions in resuscitation

Concentrating on chest compressions rather than mouth-to-mouth when giving emergency resuscitation can produce better results, says research published in The Lancet.A study of 3,000 patients found that chest compressions alone increased chances of survival by more than 22%.But training in how to give both chest compressions and mouth-to-mouth breaths is the best option, experts say.The UK Resuscitation Council is due to produce new CPR guidelines soon.Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is a combination of chest compressions and mouth-to-mouth breaths, given in the event of a cardiac arrest.The study, compiled by doctors from the Medical University of Vienna in Austria, looked at the survival rates of people treated by untrained members of the public taking instructions from the emergency services over the phone.Dr Peter Nagele, from the department of anaesthesiology, critical care and pain therapy at the Medical University of Vienna, said that if untrained bystanders avoided mouth-to-mouth breaths during CPR, they were more likely to perform uninterrupted chest compressions.That then increased the probability of CPR being successful.Different techniquesThe research in The Lancet involved two analyses.The rst used data from three randomised trials involving more than 3,000 patients.It showed that chest-compression-only CPR was associated with a slightly improved chance of survival compared with standard CPR (14% v 12%).In the second analysis of seven observational studies, researchers found no difference between the two CPR techniques.The study authors maintain that continuous, uninterrupted chest compressions are vital for successful CPR.Dr Jas Soar, chair of the Resuscitation Council from Southmead Hospital in Bristol, said: “Any CPR is better than no CPR. If you witness a cardiac arrest, dial 999 immediately. Those trained in CPR should follow existing guidance of 30 chest compressions followed by two rescue breaths.“Those not trained should start compressions and follow instructions until an expert arrives,” Dr Soar said.Dr Meng Aw-Yong, medical adviser at St John Ambulance, acknowledged that rescue breaths could be off-putting.“The current advice is that if you’re unwilling or unable to do full CPR then chest compressions are better than nothing.“The best solution, however, is for people to get trained in how to carry out chest compressions and rescue breaths so they can be the difference between a life lost and a life saved,” he said.The British Heart Foundation says that being able to do CPR more than doubles the chances of survival.Claire O’Neill, community resuscitation programme lead at the BHF, said: “For someone who is untrained in cardiopulmonary resuscitation, doing both chest compressions and rescue breaths really can be dif cult.“We also know that uninterrupted chest compressions are very important for increasing the chance of survival. So being directed to focus solely on chest compressions could make people more willing to attempt resuscitation, which could ultimately save lives,” she said.

Canadian Surgeons Perform World’s First Robotic Surgery and AnaesthesiaSurgeons at McGill University Health Centre (MUHC) in Canada have performed the world’s rst completely robotic surgery and anaesthesia.

The surgeons used the DaVinci surgical robot and the McSleepy anaesthesia robot to perform a prostatectomy at the Montreal General Hospital, a part of MUHC.

The DaVinci robot allows the surgeons to operate the robotic arms from a dedicated workstation via video control, while the McSleepy robot automates anaesthesia delivery.

The researchers are planning to combine the two robots and test all-robotic surgery and anaesthesia on a larger number of patients for various forms of surgery.

Studies say Covidien devices lower post-operative painA signi cant challenge of any surgical procedure but especially for hernia and abdominal wall repair procedures is postoperative pain and the risk of complications. According to studies presented at the 32nd International Congress of the European Hernia Society in Istanbul, Turkey, Covidien (Dublin, Ireland) may be on track to playing an important role in reducing such postoperative pain and complications in both open and laparoscopic procedures.

“We had a strong presence at this year’s EHS meeting,” said Scott Herring, president of EMEA surgical devices at Covidien. “The clinical presentations demonstrated Covidien’s commitment to deliver innovative products that offer proven bene ts and value to surgeons, patients and payors.”

Surgeons presented data from three multicenter clinical trials sponsored by Covidien. The data included preliminary results on two prospective randomized studies comparing the company’s Parietex ProGrip mesh and AbsorbaTack absorbable xation device to their respective standards of care.

Among the key ndings, one study found that the Parietex ProGrip Mesh “signi ciantly” reduced pain compared with gold standard Lichenstein sutured mesh repair at all time points measured from discharge to three months post-op. Results of this study also showed that use of the device shortened the surgery duration and reduced infection rates.

According to preliminary multicenter study data presented by principal investigator Andrew Norman Kingsnorth, professor of surgery at Derriford Hospital (Plymouth, UK) use of Parietex ProGrip mesh reduced pain compared with the gold standard sutured mesh repair at all time points measured from discharge to three months postoperatively. Pain was signi cantly reduced at discharge and day seven, Norman reported.

“By eliminating the need for abdominal wall sutures, Parietex ProGrip mesh makes hernia repair simple and fast, providing better outcomes for patients compared with the gold-standard Lichtenstein model,” said Kingsnorth. “We look forward to seeing additional data, including the nal results of the study, to con rm these promising results.”

ProGrip vs. gold standardAccording to study authors, the Lichtenstein method is the gold standard for open mesh inguinal hernia repair with low recurrences.

However, an unresolved problem is post-operative pain, which may be related to mesh xation. So investigators conducted the study to compare the self-gripping Parietex ProGrip sutureless mesh repair vs Lichtenstein sutured mesh repair in a randomized study evaluating herniorrhaphy postoperative pain.

In this study, 302 patients were randomized in eight centers. Among them, 153 patients were operated with Lichtenstein repair (L group) and 149 with Parietex ProGrip pre-cut mesh (P group) with or without xation. Patient pain (VAS scale) and other outcomes were assessed from the preoperative visit to the three-month follow-up visit.

When compared to the baseline, the pain was reduced in P group at discharge (-10%) and at seven days (-12.8%); and enhanced in L group at discharge (+38.6%) and at seven days (+20.6%). The difference between both groups was signi cant at discharge, the authors noted, and at seven days. In P group, the pain was reduced at one and three months for patient without xation compared to patient with 1-stich (-20,9% vs -6,15% at one month and -24,3% vs -7,7% at three months). Infection rates were signi cantly higher in L group (7.2%) than in P group (2%) during the three months follow-up, the researchers reported. Surgery duration was also shorter using the Paritex ProGrip device (32.4 minutes) compared to the Lichtenstein repair (39.1 minutes). No recurrence was observed at three months in both groups.

According to the study authors, these preliminary results are “promising” but need to be con rmed with longer follow-up and a larger population.

Is absorbable xation the answer?In the second randomized study, preliminary results from 10 sites showed that the Covidien AbsorbaTack absorbable xation device demonstrated a signi cant reduction in VAS pain scores compared with permanent xation at one month follow-up after inguinal hernia repair.

According to authors of that study, the ideal xation method for mesh placed during laparoscopic inguinal hernia repair remains unknown. An absorbable xation device might provide adequate initial xation strength while reducing long term postoperative discomfort, they noted.

The researchers conducted a prospective randomized double blind multi institutional study comparing outcomes of absorbable versus permanent mesh xation during laparoscopic inguinal hernia repair. Operative techniques were standardized and pain was assessed using VAS scoring system. Standard statistical analysis was used, they noted.

The investigators enrolled 89 patients in that study from 10 centers across the U.S., Germany, and France. Of those patients, 71 were available for one-month analysis (34 of them were treated with the AbsorbaTack device, 37 with the ProTack device). The prospective randomized double blind trial showed similar results of absorbable xation devices as compared to permanent xation devices for laparoscopic inguinal hernia repair.

The researchers concluded that patients with signi cant preoperative inguinal pain might bene t from absorbable xation during laparoscopic inguinal hernia repair, but they noted that long term follow up will be necessary to determine the ultimate bene t of an absorbable xation device for laparoscopic inguinal hernia repair.

‘Giant and complex’ incisional herniasIn the third multicenter clinical trial on Parietex composite mesh to treat giant incisional hernias, investigators reported a low recurrence rate (7% at two years) related to the device given the complexity of the indication. These ndings support the use of an intraperitoneal polyester protected mesh as a relevant and safe solution for the long-term treatment of complex incisional hernias.

The authors of that study noted that “giant and complex incisional hernias” represent a particular challenge for the surgeon, especially because it is frequently associated with a substance loss. In order to manage those severe patients, an intraperitoneal (IP) mesh positioning is the choice solution, they said.

The multicenter study aimed to assess the performance and tolerance of a polyester protected mesh in those particularly complicated patients.

Between March 2005 and July 2009, 54 patients with large, dif cult and recurred ventral hernias associated with additional pathologies were treated in ve academic centers with a polyester mesh protected on one side by a hydrophilic resorbable lm to prevent adhesions (Parietex Composite 37X28). Data were collected at one month (51 patients), one year (42 patients), two years (32 patients) and 3-4 years (24 patients).

According to the ndings, at one month roughly half (51%) of the patients experienced low residual pain. Short-term complications were minor, the researchers noted. Long-term complications also were minor, they said, and included: four minor residual pain (limited to scar), three enterocutaneous stulas, one absence of cutaneous healing, one super cial abscess and four recurrences.

Considering the complexity of treated hernias, the complications rate related to the use of the device is low, the researchers said. Open intraperitoneal repair using an IP polyester protected mesh appears to be a relevant solution for the long-term treatment of complex incisional hernias.

Feasibility of con rming drugs administered during anaesthesia(National Patient Safety Agency – National Reporting and Learning Service)

This report presents the results of a qualitative study to assess the feasibility of introducing the practice of con rmation of injectable drugs administered during anaesthesia, to reduce drug errors. The primary audience for the report is all members of the theatre team, particularly anaesthetists, operating department practitioners (ODPs) and theatre practitioners.

The report also aims to highlight practical issues related to the practice of con rming drugs administered during anaesthesia by exploring the perceived bene ts, barriers and practicalities of the two different methods of drug con rmation that were studied (second person con rmation and electronic barcode con rmation).

Perioperative professional bodys new president relishes challenges ahead

Building on a proud heritage and embracing the future will be crucial to enhancing patient care and professional development, according to the new president of the UKs leading body representing perioperative practitioners.

Tracy Coates, who has taken up the role of president of AfPP, believes the national charity is at one of the most exciting stages in its history. Its four-year strategy sets out to boost practitioner membership, grow its services, set standards of clinical excellence and shape the healthcare agenda.

Tracy, who joined the board of trustees in October 2005, has worked at the National Patient Safety Agency as patient safety lead anesthesia since July 2008, where she has been involved in a series of improvement initiatives. Tracy had previously worked in the perioperative environment, in anaesthetics and recovery for 21 years, undertaking a variety of roles in management, education and nally as a matron in perioperative care.

Tracy took over the role from current president Diane Gilmour after the charitys annual conference in October. As a past of cer Diane will continue to represent AfPP on the national decontamination agenda and act as an ambassador for AfPP, supporting its aims by providing valuable knowledge, guidance, contacts and ideas to the successive board.

Tracy said: Over the years, AfPP has made enormous strides in improving patient care by constantly developing and promoting the leading standards for perioperative practice and practitioners. The future years will be crucial as we build on those achievements while working within the ever changing healthcare and economic environments.

Transfusions occur on a daily basis across a wide range of hospital clinical settings, and in both elective and emergency situations. The urgent provision of blood for life threatening haemorrhages requires a rapid, focused approach as excessive blood loss can jeopardise the survival of patients. Early recognition of major blood loss and immediate effective interventions are vital to avoid hypovolaemic shock and its consequences. One such action is the rapid provision of blood and blood components, for which effective communication between all personnel involved in the provision and transportation of blood is key.

Noninvasive and Continuous Hemoglobin Monitoring in an Intensive Care Unit Patient with Low Hemoglobin

IntroductionTraditional invasive hemoglobin methods contain many drawbacks including their intermittent nature which may contribute to unnecessary blood transfusions and excessive blood loss contributing to iatrogenic anemia.[1] EHMC is a leading hospital that practices Patient Blood Management (PBM). PBM is a multi-modality approach to minimize the risk of blood loss and unnecessary blood transfusions to improve patient outcomes. Noninvasive and continuous hemoglobin monitoring is now available and has the potential to result in fewer blood draws and improved clinical management, especially in patients with very low hemoglobin values (<8g/dL).

This report describes a case of one patient over the course of four days in the intensive care unit (ICU) at a hospital practicing PBM, measuring both invasive hemoglobin (tHb) and noninvasive continuous hemoglobin (SpHb).

Materials and MethodsAn 84 y/o female patient being treated for pneumonia was admitted to the ICU with a hemoglobin value of 5.3g/dL. Once enrolled in this IRB-approved study, a Rainbow R2-25 ReSposable sensor (Rev E), attached to a Pulse CO-Oximeter (Radical-7, Masimo Corporation, Irvine, CA) was placed on the patient’s left middle nger, on the hand opposite the blood pressure cuff. The Pulse CO-Oximeter was attached to a laptop computer for the continuous recording of SpHb, pulse rate (PR), oxygen saturation (SpO2) and perfusion index (PI) at one data point per second, for the duration of the patient’s stay. The data were recorded for a period of 4 days (total of 92 hours) then downloaded into Excel for analysis. During the patient’s ICU stay, six invasive venous blood samples were obtained and the time of each blood sample was recorded. Blood samples were analyzed with a Beckman Coulter Counter LH 750 Analyzer. Laboratory hemoglobin values and continuous SpHb values were plotted against time to evaluate trending.

Results The tHb ranged from 5.2 to 8.1 g/dL in 6 measurements over four days and the continuous SpHb measurements ranged from 4.9 to 11.2 g/dL over four days. Compared to the intermittent measurements of tHb, the bias of SpHb was 1.26 g/dL and the standard deviation was 0.43 g/dL. Figure 1 shows the SpHb and tHb measurements over four days in the ICU.

Conclusion In this case, noninvasive continuous hemoglobin monitoring with SpHb exhibited a consistent trend compared to the changes in laboratory hemoglobin measurements over a period of four days. The ability to continuously monitor hemoglobin noninvasively may offer a new and effective strategy to facilitate blood conservation efforts and manage transfusions in the ICU and a variety of other medical applications.

Birmingham medics save lives of three children

in transplant mission to Trinidad

BIRMINGHAM surgical staff have saved the life of three children in a mercy mission to the Caribbean.

A team of seven surgeons and operating theatre technicians from Edgbaston’s Queen Elizabeth Hospital and Birmingham Children’s Hospital gave up their own holiday time to y to Trinidad and give the gift of life.

Surgeon Andrew Ready and his colleagues carried out kidney transplants that could not have gone ahead without their expertise.

The mission to perform kidney transplants on children Nyron, Aaron and Akila was organised by Transplant Links Charity (TLC).

With kidney dialysis barely available on the island, the transplant using parents as donors was their only hope of life.

Dr Jennie Jewitt-Harris, TLC’s founder and chief executive, said: “Thanks to team members from Birmingham, these three families have a very special Christmas to look forward to with the prospect of normal lives rather than trying to survive on kidney dialysis.

“One of the children, Nyron, and his mum, Nanda, are home and making a good recovery. Nyron had kidney failure for quite some time and badly needed a transplant.

“Kidney failure was affecting every aspect of his life, which meant a worrying time for his family. As with any transplant, the early months are crucial in ensuring the body does not reject the kidney.

“Nanda’s goal was to give her son, and her family, a normal life back again – and it looks very hopeful that this will be achieved.

“A vital aspect of our visit is the transferring of skills, and we worked closely with local doctors to ensure this happens.

“This is essential so that many more children will bene t in the future”

Operations took place at the Eric Williams Medical Centre at Mount Hope Hospital where local doctors picked up new skills to do transplants in the future.

Medical Robots Fighting the War Against Deafness

Smart robotic micro-drill to help combat deafness to be showcased

The world’s rst intelligent micro-drill for surgery, which can help save the hearing of patients, was showcased in London on Wednesday 3 November. Attendees caught a glimpse of the device, which could potentially revolutionise micro-surgery and signi cantly improve patient recovery.

The medical robot, which has been successfully trialled in cochlear implant surgery, can intelligently distinguish between different types of tissues, identify the exact point of perforation and drill autonomously to a precise depth, all without having to be programmed. The sophisticated device is able to respond to tissue type, behaviour and de ection in real time, and will be presented by Professor Peter Brett, who developed it.

It was among a number of cutting edge medical robots highlighted at the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) Robotics in Surgery conference at Birdcage Walk, London.

Surgical robots are increasingly being used as surgeons are demanding more accuracy with smaller incisions. The bene ts of utilising them, including allowing surgeons greater precision, less excess tissue damage and fewer complications all result in a reduced post-operative stay for patients.

Innovative medical technology being used to design swimming and crawling robots which can move freely within body cavities will be discussed at the conference, proving a fascinating insight into surgeries in the future.

Prof. Peter Brett, Brunel University, said: Medical robots are signi cantly improving the experience of surgery for patients. With the greater accuracy enabled by the devices, patients experience decrease blood loss, less pain and a quicker healing time. For example, the smart micro-drill can detect tissue interfaces before penetration and then intelligently either control penetration through such delicate structures or avoid penetrating altogether as required, reducing unnecessary tissue damage.

Dr Patrick Finlay, Chairman of the event, added: It’s a very exciting time for medical robotics. Some of the second generation robots showcased at the event can for the rst time enable procedures that are not possible by hand and eye.

TRUMPF PRODUCTS CHOSEN FOR ULSTER CRITICAL CARE

TRUMPF Medical Systems UK has recently completed the installation of a range of products at the £340 million critical care complex at the Ulster Hospital in Dundonald, Northern Ireland. Working with main contractor MET Healthcare, TRUMPF provided pendants, operating theatre lights, operating tables, workstations and associated engineering support.

For more than 20 years, TRUMPF has had a determining in uence over ceiling mounted workstation technology. Its systems are characterised by safe and hygienic design, high product quality and good ergonomics. The latest generation of these systems are now installed in seven operating theatres at the Ulster complex.

This prestigious order also included TRUMPF’s supply of pendants for 16 intensive care beds and 14 recovery beds. Intensive care, patient data management systems (PDMS) installed at the foot of each ICU bed and a complete endoscopy theatre project.

NURSES will be encouraged to blow the whistle on inadequate care of patients.

Monday (1st Nov) all registered nurses and preregistration nurses in the UK will receive information from the Nursing and Midwifery Council on how to raise any concerns they may have regarding a patient’s care.The aim of this initiative is to set out principles for best practice and work with local whistleblowing policies and safeguarding procedures.NMC Chief Executive and Registrar, Professor Dickon Weir-Hughes, said: “Poor care must never be tolerated.“This guidance will support nurses and midwives to effectively manage risk and empower them to speak out on behalf of the people in their care.“However, raising a concern is only the rst step. This guidance will only be effective if managers and senior staff are committed to a culture that openly encourages people to raise concerns.”Acting director of whistleblowing charity Public Concern at Work, Cathy James said the charity was in full support of this action taken by the NMC.She said: “Whether it be an elderly care ward, a maternity unit or in an operating theatre nursing and midwifery professionals should be able to speak up without fear of reprisal if a safe service is to be delivered.“This guidance will help and we hope employers will also take this issue seriously, providing a safe alternative to silence for their staff.”Policy of cer for the Council of Deans of Health, which represents university health faculties, Catherine Deakin, said: “Nurses, midwives and students should have access to clear information about steps that should be taken when raising or escalating a concern.“Importantly, the guidance emphasises the need to act promptly, safely and professionally, and to seek advice when uncertain about the process.”When compiling the guidance document, 16 different organisations were consulted including Care UK, Unison, the National Union of Nursing and NHS employers.The document explains the process of raising a concern, offers information about legislation and indicates where staff can get con dential support and advice.Employers will also receive details as to how they should implement the new guidance. Vernatray wins top award for patient safety in perioperative practice

Vernacares new Vernatray - a single-use anaesthetic medication safety tray - has won the Association for Perioperative Practice (AfPP) 2010 award for Best Innovation in Patient Safety.

The award celebrates a product innovation that contributes signi cantly to perioperative practitioners delivering safer patient care.

The Vernatray was developed by medical products manufacturer Vernacare (www.vernacare.co.uk) in partnership with NHS Innovations South West and front-line theatre practitioners to provide safer care in the hospital environment particularly for anaesthetists and perioperative care practitioners.

It is intended to replace plastic and stainless steel trays where the medication is stored in one single compartment. The Vernatray has six individual channels to ensure the correct alignment of syringes, with larger channels for 30ml+ syringes, and has a separate storage area for ampoules and sharps. This makes it easier for clinicians to locate the correct syringe and medication, therefore reducing the risk of errors.

The single-use Vernatray, made of biodegradable pulp, also helps avoids infection risks associated with re-using plastic and stainless steel receptacles. It saves cleaning time and improves environmental performance because the vessel can be simply disposed of in clinical waste or via maceration.

The Association for Perioperative Practice stated that the majority of critical incidents in anaesthesia arise from human error. They reported 128,000 patient safety incidents from surgical specialities from October 2006 to September 2007.

Jane Kent, New Product Development Manager for Vernacare: The Vernatray makes it easier for theatre staff to locate the relevant equipment and reduces the risk of incorrect medication being administered. It is a pulp product made from recycled newspaper, making it both robust and stable, as well as environmentally sustainable.

The Vernatray was developed to meet a critical safety need identi ed by theatre staff at Poole Hospital in Dorset. The need was also highlighted by many perioperative practitioners across the UK who raised concerns about the risk of medication error caused by the centuries old method of selecting syringes and ampoules using a pick and mix approach.

The design was prepared with input from clinicians and a model prototype was used to gain feedback from anaesthetists. Feedback was also obtained from theatre staff at the Infection Prevention Societys Surgical Site Infection Study Days, and delegates at the 2009 AfPP exhibition.

Chris Sawyer, Business Development Manager, NHS Innovations South West, said: The Vernatray has been designed by theatre staff for theatre staff. The original idea and thinking came from anaesthetists who identi ed the need to increase safety by organising medication better. Vernacare has taken their concepts to a new level and created a single-use tray that meets the safety needs of modern healthcare practice.

The new tray makes it easier to perform the Surgical Safety Checklist, following the WHO Safe Surgery Saves Lives Global Patient Safety Challenge. This recommends: Veri cation of the completion of an anaesthesia safety checklist is required to con rm the formal inspection of the anaesthetic equipment, medications and the patients anaesthetic risk.

Evaluation of the Vernatray has been carried out at four UK hospitals, with 99% of clinicians reporting that they found it easier to correctly identify labels on syringes and 100% of respondents stating that the syringes were stable in the tray.

Commenting on the Vernacare award, judges said: The Vernatray is user-led and the rst of its type. It addresses real clinical need and demonstrates value of clinical engagement in development and evaluation. The Vernatray is a good example of partnership working and innovation, and demonstrates evidence of customer participation in product development. It is a practical design, improves infection control and is environmentally friendly.

Prestigious surgical award winners announced

Theatre staff needed urgentlythroughout the country

sponsored charity event raises £26,000 for HAI researchMore funding is required to effectively ght the war against healthcare associated infections (HAIs). And support is needed by the Centre for Healthcare Associated Infections* (CHAI) whose groundbreaking research is taking that ght to the genetic level.

This has been acknowledged by infection control specialists Tristel plc. Tristel, with their high-level disinfection products, currently help hospitals worldwide to ght HAIs on the front line. On Thursday 30th September 2010, Tristel sponsored a fundraising gala dinner and charity auction for CHAI. Tristel made a considerable donation towards the total funds raised of £26,500, helping to make the evening a great success. The event was organised by CHAI supporter Graziella Kontkowski, whose grandmother contracted C.diff and died after initially having been admitted to hospital for a urinary tract infection.

Professor Richard James, Director of CHAI, said: “The support of fundraising events such as this is vital in providing us with a cash lifeline to underpin research, at a time when the future of funding from central government is uncertain, ahead of the awaited Comprehensive Spending Review. “Unlike other medical causes such as cancer, there is currently no national charity dedicated to raising money to fund research into these deadly bacteria.”

The talented charity auctioneer for the night was ITN’s Alastair Stewart OBE who skilfully sold many of the exclusive lots to the Tristel team. These included a tour of the BBC and the chance to see the national TV news air live. In his speech, Alastair Stewart said: “This is an enemy that does not stand still and does not rest on its laurels, with a death toll of 37,000 in the last 10 years.”

CHAI is aiming to raise £1.4 million to fund research into the clinical strains that cause serious infections such as Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), Clostridium dif cile and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, a gram-negative bacterium which is particularly dangerous to those with weak immune systems, such as babies and young children.

Professor Richard James, Director of CHAI, said: “This important research will examine the genetic differences between different strains of superbug, which will give us a greater insight into the mechanisms they use to multiply and attack the human body. It will be instrumental in helping us to develop rapid diagnostic tests for the detection of these evolving pathogens.”

CHAI also recognises that public awareness of HAIs is of paramount importance in turning the tide against HAIs, a view they share with Tristel.

Education and global understanding is needed regarding the overuse of antibiotics, and the practical methods to clean and disinfect the routes of transmission of HAIs. This education is needed for healthcare professionals as well as the general public. Tristel hope that they will be able to join forces with CHAI in the future to do this.
