OBJECTIVES ___________________________________________________________________________________________________

• Increase opportunities for student researchers to gain practical research experience by proposing, managing, and conducting independent research

• Empower individuals and communities to actively participate in solving the problems they, and the world at large, face - through innovation and scientific exploration

• Encourage student researchers to communicate – and directly interact - with individuals beyond the research community in order to develop a more comprehensive understanding of the broader context within which all research is done

PLATFORM OVERVIEW___________________________________________________________________________________________________

1. Student submits research project/budget proposal*

2. Proposal reviewed by academic faculty

3. If approved: proposal posted online

4. Proposal funded by investor(s)

5. If funded: investments transferred to student

6. Student conducts research – creates/maintains Research Log

7. When completed: student publishes an informal ‘reflective summary’ through The OSSP and may elect to submit a formal manuscript to one or more scholarly journals

___________________________________________Student must also identify any/all faculty mentors; declare whether their proposed research will be submitted as a Basic Research, Applied Research or Non-Commercial Applied Research project; and under which license their IP and data will be released

FUNDING OVERVIEW___________________________________________________________________________________________________

• Microinvestments will be provided by the broader online community (the model investor will be an individual, company, or community with an interest in the research being conducted)

• Microinvestments will be stored in a central account if/until the total requested budget is satisfied

• If budget is not satisfied within a pre-determined period of time; microinvestments will be refunded and the proposed research project will be removed from the website: for pilot program, the funding period will extend to the last day of the spring academic term 2011

BASIC RESEARCH

__________________________________________

• Research that is driven by a researcher's curiosity or interest in a particular scientific question

• Microinvestments will be considered grants – with no expectation of repayment

• IP must be released under a Creative Commons BY-NC-ND 3.0 license

APPLIED RESEARCH

__________________________________________

• Research that is conducted in order to solve a practical problem with the underlying goal of developing a commercially-valuable good

• Microinvestments will be considered loans – with expectation of repayment

• IP may be released under a unique institutional license or under terms negotiated by the student

NON-COMMERCIAL APPLIED RESEARCH

__________________________________________

• Research conducted to address a practical challenge/problem posed by a non-profit, charitable, or non-governmental organization

• Microinvestments will be considered grants – with no expectation of repayment

• IP may be released under a Creative Commons BY-NC-ND 3.0 license, a non-exclusive unique institutional license, or under terms negotiated by the student

BUDGET MANAGEMENT___________________________________________________________________________________________________

Student will be responsible for

conducting preliminary research

to calculate their projected budget - and

for administering funds received

BASIC/N-C APPLIED RESEARCH__________________________________________

• If project is not completed, student must refund all investments, and issue a statement to their investors explaining why the study was abandoned

APPLIED RESEARCH__________________________________________

• If project is not completed, student must refund all investments, and issue a statement to their investors explaining why the study was abandoned

• If project is completed, but is not successful, the total loan amount will be forgiven; the student will be responsible for informing their investors of the project outcome; and the student will be required to publish their IP and data under a Creative Commons BY-NC-ND 3.0 license
