Dear Friends, It has been a wonderful summer here at St. John’s. I hope you all have had at least some opportunity to find time for rest and refreshment. As fall approaches, we are excited to welcome three new staff members to our team here: Jim Hepler, our new Music Minister, Susie Morrison, our new Children’s Minister, and Ryan Velasquez, our new Coordinator of Com-munications and Publications. As we approach this new season of ministry together, I wish to invite all of you to take advantage of the many opportunities for Christian faith formation and biblical teaching. We have a variety of offerings for all of our members both on Sundays and during the week. Please prayerfully consider joining us for a Sunday School class or one of our weekly bible studies. RYAN’S FIRST NEWSLETTER Dear St. John’s, I hope you find the first of what I hope will be many newsletters produced by yours truly to be informative, appealing and entertaining to the standard you’ve grown accustomed to over the years. I’ve spent the better part of my journalistic career telling stories from the world of sports, but I’m excited to have the privilege of providing you with any and all news concerning the St. John’s family. One of my professors at the University of South Carolina told me that the best editors and producers are the ones whose names go undiscussed among their readers. Though I hope everything I provide in our monthly newsletter comes across clearly, concisely and grammatically sound, I also hope to get to know you all better while allowing you all to get to know me in the process. Tammy Williams has left large shoes to fill, but I’m excited to take on this new role within a great congregation. All the best,

LEGAL UPDATE JULY 30, 2014

The non-jury Trial between the Diocese of South Carolina and

several of its parishes, including St. John’s against the National Epis-

copal Church (“TEC”) concluded on Friday, July 25, 2014. The trial

lasted three weeks and included testimony by numerous witnesses.

The Court asked the Diocese and each parish, including St. John’s to

submit within 30 days trial summaries describing certain corporate

actions. TEC will have the opportunity to respond to the summaries.

Consequently, the Court will probably not render a decision on the

merits of the case before the end of August.

After the Court issues a decision, the losing side will almost cer-

tainly appeal to the South Carolina Appellate Courts. The South

Carolina Supreme Court may take the appeal directly, which would

shorten the appeal time. Otherwise, the appeal will go through the

South Carolina Court of Appeals and then probably to the South

Carolina Supreme Court. This second described appellate path will

take a bit longer. We will keep you updated.

PASTORAL LETTER FROM BISHOP LAWRENCE

July 27, 2014 St. George, Utah

Dear Friends in Christ, "... suffering produces endurance and endurance produces hope and hope does not disappoint us for the love of God has been poured into our hearts by the Holy Spirit...." Romans 5:3-4 Having spent much of the last three weeks at the Dorchester Courthouse in St. George, South Carolina it is rather serendipitous to be sending this from a Star-bucks in St. George, Utah (a gateway to Zion National Park). Allison and I will be traveling during the next few weeks in Utah, Nevada and California on vaca-tion. She'll have some much needed time for relaxation and fun and I'll be climbing the mountains and hiking the trails. Nevertheless, I want to send you this report on the last three weeks. Firstly, I'm glad to say our legal team led by Mr. Alan Runyan and Ms. Henrietta

Golding, supported by a stellar cast of attorneys from the various congregations across the diocese, presented a strong case and did so in a professional, forthright, and convincing manner. The teamwork was marvelous to observe and was only exceeded by what seemed to be the outstretched arm and the mighty hand of God moving again and again in a most timely manner. I was proud to have them representing us from the Diocese of South Carolina. Frankly, having sat through all fourteen days I have to say it was a trial of tediously presented evidence by TEC fortu-nately punctuated during cross-examination by our attorneys with moments of sheer drama and stunning admissions. Secondly, the diocesan team of Canon Jim Lewis, Nancy Armstrong, Beth Snyder, Joy Hunter and Jan Pringle worked tirelessly and with a remarkable esprit de corps. It so often put me in mind of Psalm 133-"How good and pleasant it is when the brethren live together in unity." Then there was the strong cast of witnesses on behalf of the Diocese. Chancellor, Wade Logan, painted for the court a most helpful background of what a diocese is and how it functions both corporately and ecclesially. Canon Lewis re-ported on the various Diocesan Conventions and canonical changes which brought us to the place of dissociation from TEC. Mr. Robert Kunes testified on behalf of the Trustees of the Diocese. These three witnesses presented the foun-dation of our diocesan case. They were followed by a representative witness from every congregation participating in the law suit. I could hardly be more proud of them. Some endured quite vigorous cross-examination. It was moving (and at times for me a heavy burden) to hear parish witnesses again and again testify that they "...wanted to stay in communion with the Diocese of South Carolina and Bishop Lawrence." I wished their fellow parishioners could have seen the courage and clarity with which they represented them. We also had witnesses in rebuttal to the case made by TEC attorneys. Our diocesan administrator, Nancy Armstrong, combed through centuries of diocesan records to contrast monies that have come into the diocese from TEC and its various related agencies with monies sent by the diocese to TEC. This was in rebuttal to the one-sided presentations given by witnesses from the National Church (including UTO grants which any woman from our DCW can tell you are from contributions from the pews in congregations around the country and not from some National Church budget). In summary the court learned that for every 81 cents given by The Episcopal Church and its various entities to us in South Carolina and our congregations for ministry; the diocese sent $100 to TEC ($100 to 81 cent ratio), therein undermining the defendants' one-sided presentation of the "facts". In fifteen minutes of testimony she under-mined hours of tedium and an endless parade of documents from so-called experts for the National Church. When Mr. Runyan called to the stand the renowned professor and historian, Dr. Allen Guelzo, author of some 16 books and a foremost historian of the Civil War era and 18th and 19th centuries of American intellectual history we were treated to a breath-taking tour de force disputing the alleged hierarchical assumptions of the national Episcopal Church. Oth-ers in this rebuttal stage of the trial were Fr. Robert Lawrence from Camp St. Christopher, the Rev. Greg Kronz, who chaired the Bishop's search committee and Chancellor Wade Logan who once again punctuated our case. On the last day, I was called finally to the stand.

But I need to say, and can hardly say it enough, under girding it all-felt at times in palpable ways- were the prayers and intercessions from tens of thousands of the saints within the diocese and around the world upholding us in prayer. Some of these intercessors came to the courtroom to pray while testimonies and cross-examinations were taking place. Others of you prayed from home, perhaps on a lunch break, or while driving to and from your work place. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! After the final written submissions by the attorneys this case will lie in the careful judgment of the Honorable Diane Goodstein, who from my novice perspective was astonishingly competent, cheery and at times appropriately stern. This was not an easy case to try-yet she did it with aplomb. It may be several months before her judicial order is made. So please pray for her as she and her clerks sort through the testimonies and lengthy documents presented to the court and as she subsequently renders her ruling. I have learned much about the diocese during this process-its structure and history-as well as the rich heritage of our parishes and missions. All is more firmly rooted in my mind and has awakened in my heart a deeper gratitude to God for calling me to serve among you. I am eager to put this knowledge to good use. My prayer is that our Lord will use this season to prepare us for the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead as we seek to reach our communities for Jesus Christ- Making Biblical Anglicans for a Global Age here in South Carolina and around the world. We received $10,000 more in pledges for June than we did in May. Quarterly notices have been

mailed and this will give you the opportunity to update your pledge if you have not already done so.

The parishioners have generously donated $10,266 to the Sanctuary Society in honor of the 125th

anniversary of the laying of the cornerstone of our church building. The vestry will soon be announc-

ing plans for improvements to our sanctuary.

All of the Sunday school rooms upstairs in the Parish Hall have received a much needed coat of

paint. The front two rooms looking over the commons will be used by our financial secretary, Kitty

Daniels, and Ryan Velasquez. Ryan is in charge of all communications for St. John’s.

Painting and repair work will continue on the outside of the sanctuary, fellowship hall, youth

building, and garage. We should be finished well before Rally Sunday in September.

I especially want to thank Ed McGee and Harry Cantey for all their work in Cathy’s garden. We all

enjoy this lovely green space and appreciate the loving care it receives. - Allie Walker, Sr. Warden

YOUTH NEWS

Dear Friends,

Mission Florence has been an awesome time of ministry with our St. John’s family this summer. Our time

began at the House of Hope men’s shelter in Effingham. With our sights set on a vision for a sustainable gar-

den and chicken coop, we got to work. Using an old garage for a frame and

recycled materials from the property, we built a chicken house large enough

to house, we believe, at least 30 chickens. Without the spirit given contribu-

tions of time, talent and treasure we would have never accomplished this

task. I would like to give special thanks to Ron Harrelson, Bruce Smith, Clark

Reifsnider, Luke & Ashley Lucas, Carol McCree and a sundry of teens and

other adults who showed up, shared supplies, and donated products. It was

3 hot days of God’s people showing up and giving up. There are currently 4

chickens in the house with more to come. The garden is still being tilled and

prep with hopes of a spring

garden. If you are a gardener or

chicken farmer and would be

interested in getting involved in

that ministry please contact the

House of Hope at 667.9000.

The second part of Mission Florence included time at the Cen-

ter Day School. For three days we shared the gospel and loved

the East Florence neighborhood kids. And we are going to do it

again. And again. And again. These are the kids that live around

our church. The Key family (Peggy and Frank Key and their son

Charlie and wife Marilyn) have been teaching, leading and loving

those kids for the past 40 years. This is a ministry worth an investment. This year they will not continue their

school but will be offering tutoring after school Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Also, every Tuesday night

they serve a meal and have a teaching time for 80-100 kids. They are currently seeking volunteers interested

in helping with after school tutoring and seeking churches to host aTuesday night dinner on a regular rota-

tion. Please join me in praying for the Center Day School and how we at St. John’s can support that ministry. If

you are interested in getting involved with what they are doing please let me know. We are blessed beyond

measure. Thank you to all who have supported our efforts this summer, it has been awesome to watch the

Lord at work.

ACOLYTES Are you interested in helping with worship on Sundays? Have you ever wondered how heavy the processional cross is? Have you always wondered what Father Ken is doing up at the altar? Have you always wanted to light the candles up on the altar? Join us after the 10am service on August 24th for acolyte training and lunch. The training will be for all acolytes OLD and NEW-- a refresher course for the returners, as well as, a training course for the new students. PARENTS: This is a great way for students of all ages to serve in the worship service. However, please make sure your student is MATURE enough to handle this all-important ministry. WOMEN’S PRAYER GROUP Recently after Father Ken read a prayer for our country on the Sunday following the Fourth of July, I heard a pa-

rishioner ask him for a copy of the prayer. He told her it was in the Book of Common Prayer. It reminded me that

until I was almost 40 years old, I did not realize that The Book of Common Prayer housed thirty-one pages of

prayers which are organized in a way that is user friendly. The table of contents for those prayers can be found on

page 810-813. The actual prayers begin on page 814. One can find prayers for the world, the church, our na-

tional life, prayers for the Social Order, prayers for the Natural Order, prayers for Family and Personal Life,

and prayers of Thanksgiving. There are prayers for birthdays, for those we love, for guidance, for the victims of ad-

diction, for a person in trouble or bereavement.

If you would like to learn more about prayer and about the wealth of prayers in our Book of Common Prayer,

please come visit the Women's Prayer Group on Monday, Sept 8. We meet in the Poynor Room from 1-2

PM. We pray for our country, our Congress, our leaders both in the church and in the nation and for local commu-

nity, for our children and grandchildren, and for anything that the Holy Spirit places on our hearts.

Father Ken reminds us often of the vision God gave him of Acts 2:42: And they (the people who believed) de-

voted themselves to the apostles' teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers.

Our parish family is excellent with fellowship and the breaking of bread. Let's take the challenge this year to

commit to a Women's Bible Study (the apostles' teaching) and to an hour of prayer each week (Women's Prayer

Group). It has been my experience that prayer changes things! Several ladies attend the 10AM Bible study, go to

lunch with some of the ladies from the study, and return to St. John's at 1PM for an hour of prayer. We welcome

newcomers who could join us for one or all of these events. This discipline of devotion to the teaching, fellowship,

and prayers has created friendships and love among those who barely knew each other prior to taking this step,

and has brought us closer to our Lord.

We rejoice and give thanks for the safe delivery and birth

of Michael Kai Hepler, who was born to Amy Beth Hepler

on June 23, and Augusto Shepherd “Gus” Lin-Cantey, who

was born to Rebecca Cantey and Victor Lin-Arceo on July

7. Kai is Beth and Jim Hepler’s first grandchild.

Gus is the grandchild of Harry Cantey.

HELP 4 KIDS UPDATE Help 4 Kids Florence is a community project to provide

nutritious food for the elementary students in Florence

District One who are at risk of hunger over the weekends

during the school year. Through the generous support of

the members and vestry of St. John’s, this project is be-

ginning its second year.

We are excited to announce the following grants to

Help 4 Kids Florence: ADP of Florence, Carolina Pan-

thers.

MUSIC NOTES

It is good to be on board with the people of St. John's

Church! I am excited about the possibilities and the fu-

ture of this wonderful church. God has great things in

store!

The choir will resume Wednesday rehearsals

on August 20 from 6-7:30 p.m. If you would like to join

the choir's ranks, this is an excellent time to jump in! Give

me a call, a text or an email and we will be ready for

you. (My mobile is 843-862-3825.)

Exciting plans for our children's music ministry will be

announced in the September newsletter. Please let me

know if you have any ideas or dreams for this aspect of

our church's ministry.

I have met with Val Gleason to discuss plans for our

handbell choir. We will resume rehearsals in Septem-

ber. You will look forward to hearing this group in wor-

ship soon.

Sunday worship is at the center of the life of the

church. Do you have a favorite hymn that hasn't been

sung recently? Let me know! Our music is planned to

work with the lectionary texts of the day, and I will make a

note and try to use your favorite hymns whenever appro-

priate.

Finally, let me say what a wonderful welcome you have

given to Beth and me. We are happy to be in Florence at

864 Indian Drive. The warmth of our clergy, staff and par-

ish has been overwhelming! The time that Tammy Wil-

liams has given to help acclimate me to the job has been

far beyond her call of duty. Her service to this church has

been remarkable, and I am privileged to be able to pick

up the reins of such a capable and dedicated leader.

These verses are "life verses" for me, and in closing I

share them with you hope:

“The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mer-

cies never come to an end; they are new every morning;

great is your faithfulness" (Lamentations 3: 22-23).

MAKE YOUR BIRTHDAY COUNT

Do you know about the birthday golden apple? We

all know that weekly birthdays and anniversaries are

recognized during announcements on Sundays.

However, you may not have noticed that an acolyte

stands nearby holding a golden apple. Parishioners

are encouraged to place in the apple a gift of $1 for

each year being celebrated. The birthday funds are

accumulated and given for outreach purposes twice

a year. If you have an idea for an outreach ministry

that might be a good recipient of our birthday funds,

let one of the wardens know.
