College Council Chair 2000 Distinguished Alumnus
MacebearerThe origin of the mace can be traced to the early 17th century when it appeared at Oxford and Cambridge Universities. Traditionally borne by the senior-most member of the college faculty, the mace symbolizes academic freedom, excellence, and institutional authority.
SUNY Canton Cords and StolesGraduates wearing white cords were recognized at Honors Convocation for having earned the highest grade point average within their curriculum. The other cords or stoles signify that the graduate is a member of an academic honor society.
The Red, White, and Blue cords signify that the student is currently serving or has served in the United States Military.
Caps, Gowns, and Hoods
The caps, gowns, and hoods worn at college and univer-sity functions date back to the Middle Ages. Monks and students of those days wore them to keep warm in the damp and drafty 12th century castles and halls of learning. The gowns for the bachelor’s degree, earned after under-graduate study, have a semistiff yoke, long pleated front and intricate shirring across the shoulders and back. The bachelor’s gown is primarily distinguished by its long, pointed sleeves.
The holder of the master’s degree, earned by postgradu-ate work, wears a gown with the same yoke effect as the

ACADEMIC HERALDRYbachelor’s and the very long sleeve is square and closed at the end, the forearm coming through a slit near the elbow.
Gowns for the doctorate’s degree carry broad velvet panels down the front and three velvet bars on the full, round, open sleeves. This velvet trimming may be either black or the color distinctive of the field of learning to which the degree pertains.
Caps may be a serge, broadcloth or, for the doctorate’s outfit only, of velvet; the tassel of the doctorate’s cap may be of gold bullion.
It is the hood that gives color and real meaning to the academic costume. A black shell, of varying size for the three degrees, and of material to match the gown, is silk-lined with the color or colors of the institution conferring the degree. The hood is then bordered with velvet of the proper width to indicate the degree and of the color sig-nifying the field of learning to which the degree pertains.
It is important to note that the field of learning governs the color that is proper for the velvet of the hood. Thus a degree conferred as “bachelor of science in engineering” requires the golden yellow of science and not the orange of engineering. Similarly, the doctor of philosophy degree requires blue velvet, irrespective of the major field. If more than one degree is held, the gown and hood of the highest degree are naturally worn.
The colored silk lining of the hood tells which college granted the degree.
The colors indicative of the various fields of learning are as follows:

HONOR SOCIETIES
DAVID R. MAYNARD STUDENT ACTIVITIES AWARD
Rachel Dominique "Nikki" Zeitzmann ’18
Miss Zeitzmann was selected to receive the David R. Maynard Student Activities Award for her outstanding work as a leader and advocate for the entire student body.
In addition to earning President’s List and Dean’s List honors in her major, Applied Psychology, she served two terms as Student Government Association (SGA) President and is the student representative on the SUNY Canton College Council. Prior to that, she served as SGA Vice President and President of the Drama Club.
Miss Zeitzmann’s work as a Student Ambassador helped develop positive relationships with prospective students and their families, and as an Orientation Leader, she helped new students acclimate to college life.
In the community, she has volunteered as a sexual assault support service advocate in Cornwall, Ontario, and a mentor for the “Learn to Lead” program at Massena Central High School, which helps first-year students build leadership skills.
“Nikki is a true role model to students. She has encouraged her peers to take on leadership roles and practiced what she preached by demonstrating how it all can be accomplished,” said Director of Student Activities Priscilla Leggette. “She has earned the respect of the entire campus for all of the hard work and dedication she has exhibited.”
Following graduation, Miss Zeitzmann plans to enter the work force and eventually continue her education in neuropsychology.
CHANCELLOR’S AWARD FOR STUDENT EXCELLENCE
Jessica L. Fischer ’18
A champion of renewable energy is being recognized for her humanitarian efforts, commitment to advancing sustainable practices on campus, and academic excellence.
A graduate of the Mechanical Engineering Technology program, Miss Fischer was a founder and President of SUNY Canton’s Environmental Change Organization, which is dedicated to creating a more eco-friendly campus. In this capacity, she has spearheaded efforts to coordinate clean-up days, establish a pollinator garden, and organize recycling initiatives. She also obtained a grant to establish a campus food composting operation that has diverted tons of waste from landfills.
In 2016, Miss Fischer was selected by the WindAid Institute to build a wind turbine in Playa Blanca, Peru, and was also chosen to join a research team at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst in 2017 to study offshore wind desalination systems.
She has maintained a 4.0 GPA every semester and is a member of Tau Alpha Pi Honor Society. As a highly regarded peer mentor, she has shared her knowledge and experience by serving as a tutor, a guest speaker in the College’s first-year experience course for freshman, and an ambassador for the Mechanical Engineering program at open houses and admitted student days.
Her volunteer work extends beyond the SUNY Canton campus; she has been involved in many local and national fundraising initiatives, including the St. Lawrence County Walk to End Alzheimer’s and the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life. She has also helped maintain local hiking trails through a collaboration with the Nature Up North organization.
“During my tenure at SUNY Canton, I have not seen any other student accomplish as much as Jessica has,” said Assistant Professor Dr. Lucas Craig. “Her extracurricular activities throughout her academic career mirror that of a humanitarian, and she has made the entire campus proud.”
CHANCELLOR’S AWARD FOR STUDENT EXCELLENCE
Kaitlyn N. Tibbetts ’18
A Criminal Investigation student who is receiving her third SUNY Canton degree is being recognized for her academic achievements, community service endeavors, and campus leadership roles.
In addition to earning Dean’s List or President’s List honors every semester, Miss Tibbetts received SUNY Canton’s Outstanding Associate Graduate Award in 2016 upon completing a degree in Criminal Justice. She also holds an Associate Degree in Liberal Arts and Sciences: General Studies.
Her most notable contributions are as a founding member of the SUNY Canton Emergency Medical Service Squad and a volunteer
with the St. Lawrence County Canton Fire and Rescue organization, where she provided patient care and transport to local hospitals. Her outstanding efforts in support of law enforcement earned her the New York State University Police Chief’s Dr. McBride Criminal Justice Student Achievement Award.
Miss Tibbetts was hired by the U.S. Secret Service last fall to complete a pathway internship. Her duties include supporting criminal investigations and handling counterfeit currency.
“Having been in higher education for 17 years, and law enforcement prior to that, I recognize that Kaitlyn is the ideal person to have a career in law enforcement,” said SUNY Canton Criminal Justice Lecturer Lisa E. Colbert.
Upon graduation, Miss Tibbetts will continue her employment with the Secret Service while pursuing a Master’s Degree in Intelligence.
OUTSTANDING GRADUATE AWARDBACCALAUREATE LEVEL
Jamie Lynne Reed ’18
A mother of six who maintained full-time employment while completing her four-year degree in Applied Psychology was selected to receive the College’s Outstanding Graduate Award. Mrs. Reed works for the Canton Department of Social Services and completed her course work over her lunch breaks, between her children’s sporting events, and after her family had gone to bed.
“One of the things that makes Jamie so special is the way she juggles a very full life while earning some of the best grades in the history of the Applied Psychology program,” said Assistant Professor Barat Wolfe. “She cares so deeply about everything
she undertakes, whether it is writing a paper or an exam, running events for local sports teams, fundraising, working, or parenting.”
The civic-minded Canton resident is a foster parent, who is known for going out of her way to help children find a home and holding fundraisers for families in need. She serves on the Canton Pee Wee Association Board of Directors and the Canton Booster Club and runs the Canton Pee Wee girl’s lacrosse program. She has inspired other non-traditional students to continue their education at SUNY Canton and said she could not have done it without the continued support of her husband and children.
“I’m exceptionally grateful for the support of my family and the faculty at the College,” she said. “Determination to succeed was my motivator. I hope I have instilled those same goals in my children.”
Mrs. Reed plans to continue her education and get a Master’s Degree in Social Work.
OUTSTANDING GRADUATE AWARDASSOCIATE LEVEL
Michael J. Volpe ’18
A student who hopes to become a crime scene investigator is being recognized for his academic and extra service in the College’s Criminal Justice program.
Mr. Volpe is a member of Phi Theta Kappa International honor society, the treasurer for Alpha Phi Sigma, the honor society for Criminal Justice students, in addition to the Order of the Sword and Shield honor society. He is a tutor who mentors students taking Biology and has maintained President’s List Honors throughout his time at the College. He volunteers to represent his program and his organizations at admissions events.
“Michael is very serious about his academics,” said Professor Brian K. Harte, who taught Volpe in the Criminal Justice program. “He is very goal oriented and strives for academic excellence in each of his classes.”
Mr. Volpe is a member of the Cultural Competency Committee. As a youth with a hearing impairment, he experienced difficulties during his undergraduate education.
“I was met with open arms at this campus,” he said. “I hope to continue the supporting and welcoming environment and help new students feel the same way I do.”
He plans to continue in SUNY Canton’s four-year Criminal Investigation program with a minor in Forensic Science.
COMMENCEMENT KEYNOTE SPEAKER AND HONORARY DEGREE RECIPIENT
John G. Maines, III ’77
Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter John G. Maines, III began his career in journalism when he started writing for SUNY Canton’s student newspaper, the Insight, in the mid-1970s while studying Agricultural Engineering Technology.
After covering campus news for a year, he was offered a full-time job with the Massena Observer. Mr. Maines went on to work for the Ithaca Journal and the Clarion-Ledger in Jackson, Mississippi, before becoming a freelance writer based in Washington, D.C. In the late 1980s, he became interested in computer-assisted reporting, or CAR, a technique that reporters use to gather and organize data for articles.
Upon joining the reporting staff at the South Florida Sun Sentinel in 1993, he used his CAR background to assist the research team on a number of high-profile investigations, including voting irregularities in the 2000 presidential election, Florida’s connections to the September, 11 terrorists, and widespread FEMA fraud after Hurricane Frances in 2004.
His groundbreaking investigative report with colleague Sally Kestin about rampant speeding by off-duty police officers titled “Above the Law” not only earned the Sun Sentinel its first Pulitzer Prize for Public Service in 2013, but led to sweeping reform and disciplinary action by police departments across the state.
Mr. Maines is the recipient of numerous journalism honors, including the Associated Press Managing Editors Public Service and First Amendment awards, the Investigative Reporters and Editors Award, and the Roy W. Howard Award in Public Service Reporting from the Scripps Howard Foundation. He was also a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for Investigative Reporting in 2006 for the FEMA series.
He was inducted into the SUNY Canton Hall of Fame in 2016 and is being presented with a SUNY Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree in recognition of his accomplishments.
The mace is a symbol of dignity and authority that the senior-most faculty member carries at formal ceremonies, convocations, and commencements.
President Emeritus Earl W. MacArthur inspired the College’s current mace. Professor Emeritus John G. Boyden and Dale G. Fockler worked with students to design and construct it in 1981. Area companies, including Alcoa and Corning, donated the materials.
Each portion of the 29-inch tall scepter is symbolic of SUNY Canton. The arch at the top represents the overriding authority of the College president. The crystal inset bears the College logo, consisting of a leaf and parallelogram. The chrome studs inset into the copper bowl represent the academic departments of 1981.
It is said that the mace is a mobile time capsule and that students may have inserted materials into the hollow shaft when it was being assembled. Those contents will only be revealed if the mace is ever dismantled for service or redesign.
THE MACE
LEAF AND PARALLELOGRAMThe College emblem consists of a green leaf and blue parallelogram. The leaf represents life, growth, and sustainability. The parallelogram symbolizes the symmetry and exactness of technology.
