THE year 1930 was, after the first month, free from the terrible storms which made 1929 memorable, but the need for an ever-vigilant Life-boat Service was again shown, and once more the Service was fully equal to the demands made upon it. In fact, though the year was much calmer, the number of lives rescued was actually a little larger than in 1929, and the record of rescues, month by month, shows that, in summer as in winter, there is scarcely a week in which, somewhere round our coasts, the services of the Life-boats are not required. Their busiest time was in the wild, weather of January. There were gales on sixteen days, and the wind in the English Channel rose to 103 miles an hour. During that month there were 34 launches, and the Life-boats rescued 54 lives. In September there were 31 launches, and 53 lives rescued ; and in December 30 launches and 41 lives rescued. These are the figures of rescues by Life-boats. They rescued 298 lives during the year, and in addition the Institution gave rewards for the rescue of 67 lives by shore boats and in other ways. Altogether 365 lives were rescued —one for each day of the year, and 30 boats and vessels were saved or helped to safety. Since the Institution was founded in 1824, up to the end of 1930, it has given rewards for the rescue of 62,487 lives—an average of 11 lives a week for nearly 107 years. Four Medal Services. The year was marked by a number of fine services. The outstanding service was performed by a Scottish Motor Life- boat, the one stationed at Longhope, in the Orkneys, for which Coxswain John Swanson was awarded the Silver Medal, while two other services only less note- worthy were performed by English Motor Life-boats, for which Bronze Medals were awarded to Coxswain Robert Hood of Hartlepool, and Cox- swain Frederick Barnes of Selsey. The Institution also awarded three Bronze Medals for one of the finest shore-boat services of recent years, the rescue by three Irish fishermen of the crew of a sinking steamer. The rescue was carried out in an open boat, and the rescuers themselves were in imminent peril of losing their own lives. The Longhope service was fully described in the issue of The Life-boat for last March, and accounts of the other three services will be found elsewhere in this issue.

The Life-boat Service in 1930.THE year 1930 was, after the firstmonth, free from the terrible stormswhich made 1929 memorable, but theneed for an ever-vigilant Life-boatService was again shown, and once morethe Service was fully equal to thedemands made upon it. In fact,though the year was much calmer, thenumber of lives rescued was actually alittle larger than in 1929, and the recordof rescues, month by month, shows that,in summer as in winter, there is scarcelya week in which, somewhere round ourcoasts, the services of the Life-boats arenot required.

Their busiest time was in the wild,weather of January. There were galeson sixteen days, and the wind in theEnglish Channel rose to 103 miles anhour. During that month there were34 launches, and the Life-boats rescued54 lives. In September there were31 launches, and 53 lives rescued ; andin December 30 launches and 41 livesrescued. These are the figures of rescuesby Life-boats. They rescued 298 livesduring the year, and in addition theInstitution gave rewards for the rescueof 67 lives by shore boats and in otherways. Four Medal Services.The year was marked by a number of

Services to Foreign Vessels.Although the majority of the 365 lives

rescued were British, the Life-boatsagain showed that they are a greatinternational as well as a great Britishservice. Altogether 16 foreign vessels,belonging to nine different countries,were succoured, and 71 lives wererescued from them. Three of thevessels were French, three Swedish,two German, two Danish, two Belgian,one was Norwegian, one Japanese, oneGreek, and one belonged to the FreeCity of Danzig.

Loss of Life.Unfortunately the year was not free

from loss of life in the Service. Duringa launch of the Filey Life-boat, at theend of August, to the help of a vesselwhich had gone ashore in a fog, amember of the Crew was run over bythe Life-boat Carriage and killed. Theman left a widow and two daughters.The widow has been granted a pensionas from the date of the accident, and aweekly allowance for one of the twodaughters, who is under sixteen.

During a gale at the end of December,the Motor Mechanic at Aranmore, Co.Donegal, the son of the HonorarySecretary, was blown over the end ofthe pier and killed, when he had gone tosee if the boarding-punt was secure. Hewas unmarried, and had no dependentrelatives, so that no pension wTill be given,but a memorial tablet is to be erected.

New Motor Life-boats.The year was noteworthy for the

sending to the coast of the first Life-boat which has been designed and builtin order to go to the help of aeroplaneswhich come down at sea. This boat,named Sir William Hillary, after thefounder of the Institution, is stationedat Dover, where she will serve thedouble purpose of protecting the aero- |

plane traffic and the heavy passengersteamer traffic across the Straits. Sheis 64 feet by 14 feet, with two 375 h.p.engines, giving her a speed of between17 and 18 knots, and is the largest andfastest Motor Life-boat in the world.

Altogether twelve new Motor Life-boats were completed and sent to theirStations. Of these boats, six went tothe English coast, Dover and Hythe(Kent), Berwick-on-Tweed, Newhaven(Sussex), Weymouth (Dorset), and Tor-bay (Devon) ; three went to Wales,Moelfre (Anglesey), and Fishguard andTenby (Pembroke) ; one went to Scot-land, Lerwick (Shetland Islands) ; oneto Ireland, Ba)lycotton (Cork) ; and oneto the St. Mary's (Isles of Scilly). Atthe end of the year there were ninetyMotor Life-boats in the Institution'sFleet 'of 194 boats ; and another fifteenwere under construction.

Help of the Royal Family.The Institution received during the

year remarkable proof of the personaland generous interest which the RoyalFamily have taken in the work of theLife-boat Service since its foundation.Their Majesties, the King and Queen, asPatrons of the Institution, H.R.H. thePrince of Wales, as its President, andH.R.H. Princess Louise, Duchess ofArgyll, as Patron of the Ladies' Life-boat Guild, attended a Variety Matineein London in aid of the Institution.H.R.H. the Prince of Wales named thenew Motor Life-boat at Dover ; H.R.H.the Duke of Gloucester named ThePrincess Mary, the new Motor Life-boatat Padstow ; H.R.H. Prince Georgenamed new Motor Life-boats at Walton-on-the-Naze and Clacton-on-Sea ; andH.R.H. the Duke of Connaught issueda special appeal to those regiments inthe Army of which he is Colonel orCoIonel-in-Chief.

Lectures to Training Ships.DURING the winter Captain G. C.Holloway, O.B.E., R.D., R.N.R., amember of the Committee of Manage-ment, has visited the principal SeaTraining Ships for boys and givenlectures, illustrated with films or slides,

on the Life-boat Service. The shipswhich he visited are the Cornwall,Warspite, Arethusa, Worcester, Conway,Indefatigable and Exmouth, and theNautical Training College at Pang-bourne.

Two Bronze Medal Services.Hartlepool (Durham) and Selsey and Bognor (Sussex).

ON the morning of 26th September last athree-masted Danish auxiliary schooner,the-Doris, of Thuro, attempted to enterthe harbour at Hartlepool. A strongN.N.E. gale was blowing, with a veryheavy sea and rain, and Hartlepool Baywas all broken water. The schooner wasin ballast and her engine was of smallpower. She failed to make the entrance,and was driven to leeward across the bay.She narrowly missed the Longscar Rocksand anchored near them in heavy break-ing seas, which caused her to labourheavily, with violent pitching and roll-ing. Then her anchors began to drag.

The Motor Life-boat was launchedat 12.35 P.M. and made her way to theschooner, shipping heavy seas. Severaltimes the after shelter was full almostto the top. With great difficulty theLife-boat got alongside, and the Cox-swain hailed the schooner by megaphone,but the Master was unwilling to leavehis vessel. The Life-boat was drivenaway southward by the heavy seas,but again approached the schooner.The Coxswain then told her Masterthat he was in a very dangerous position,and that if he went on the rocks closeby the Life-boat would be unable toget near him. The Life-boat was againdriven away, and on approaching for thethird time saw that the crew were readywith lines to throw, but once more shewas driven awav by the seas.

At fhe fourth attempt one of theLife-boatmen was able to throw a smallline to the schooner. The men onboard made a rope fast to it. This washauled to the Life-boat, and by thismeans she was brought close along-side the schooner. Eight of the ninemen on board her jumped into tfye Life-boat, but the last man was washed backby a sea. The Life-boat was stillfast to the schooner ; she hauled stillcloser alongside ; and the last manjumped down into the arms of the SecondCoxswain. The rope was then choppedaway, and the Life-boat got clear,returning ashore through very heavyseas. A great crowd had gatheredalong the town wall and loudly cheered

the Life-boat as she arrived with thenine rescued men. The abandonedschooner continued to drag until shegrounded and became a total wreck.

It was a rescue very skilfully andsmartly carried out in the face of greatodds. The schooner, being in ballast andriding to her anchors in heavy breakingseas, afforded no lee for the Life-boat.She was jumping and slewing violently,and the skill with which the Life-boatwas handled can be judged from thefact that not only was ths whole crew ofthe schooner rescued but that in the fourattempts to get alongside the Life-boatwas not damaged.

The Institution has marked its appre-ciation of the skill and courage shownby awarding to Coxswain Robert Hoodthe Bronze Medal and by makingadditional monetary awards to him andeach member of the Crew. The Medalwas presented by the Marchioness ofLondonderry, D.B.E., a Vice-Presidentof the Ladies' Life-boat Guild.

Selssy and Bognor (Sussex).On 2nd November, 1930, at 10.30 in

the morning, the Selsey and BognorMotor Life-boat was launched, as newshad been received that a vessel was indifficulties to the west of Selsey Bill. AW.S.W. gale was blowing, with hardsqualls of wind and rain. A heavy seawas running and the weather was misty.After the Life-boat had passed round theBill and the neighbouring shoals, shefound the yacht Lucy B., of Rye, inbroken water, in a small bay formed bytwo shoals, " The Streets " and " TheHounds." She was on a dead lee shorein the full force of the gale.

The yacht had carried away somegear, and the two men on board her hadbeen unable to start the auxiliaryengine. They had let go their anchoras they got near land, but it would nothold ; the yacht drifted rapidly, and, asthe Life-boat came in sight, the cableparted and the two men ware just aboutto make a desperate effort to reach theshore by swimming. The yacht wasthen little more than a quarter of a mile

from the shore. To those on shore itseemed impossible for the men on theyacht to be rescued. She was in littlemore than six feet of water, with a wholegale blowing. The • seas were goingclean over the Life-boat; though soclose in, she was at times invisible ; andthose on shore expected to see hercapsize. But the Coxswain, withouthesitation, took her into the breakersand ran alongside the yacht. One ofthe two men succeeded in jumping intoher. Then the yacht sheered off.

Twice more the Life-boat attemptedto get alongside, but the water was soshallow that it was impossible. Thenshe tried to get a line and buoy to theyacht. This succeeded. The man onboard was able to get hold of the buoy,and the Crew hauled him through thewater in the buoy and got him on board.The Life-boat was then so near to theshore that she had to go astern beforeshe could turn. She reached her Stationagain at 12.15, but it was impossible,with the sea running, to take the Life-boat up the Slipway, so she was securedto her moorings, and the Crew and therescued men came off in a shore boat,which, in itself, was no easy task.

This was a service in which greatskill and seamanship were shown by theCoxswain and great courage by thewhole Crew. To Coxswain FrederickBarnes the Institution has awarded itsBronze Medal, and to each member ofthe Crew its Thanks inscribed on Vellum.Additional monetary awards were alsomade to the Coxswain and Crew, aLetter of Thanks was sent to theAssistant Honorary Secretary, Mr. J. E.Francis, and a Letter was also sent tothe Board of Trade commending theStation Officer of Coastguard. He hadbeen the first to give the alarm, havinggone, while off duty, to see if all was wellto the west of the Bill, which was out ofsight of the look-out position.

The Institution received a letter

from Mr. William Thornton, " late mateof the Lucy B." enclosing a donation ingratitude for his rescue.

A SECOND SERVICE.Less than twelve hours later the

Selsey Life-boat was again called out.During the afternoon the Crew hadstood by, as there was a good deal oftraffic in the Channel, and the secondcall came at 10.20 P.M., when news wasreceived from the Coastguard that avessel was in distress five or six milesS.S.W. of Selsey Bill. A strong galewas still blowing, though it had moder-ated a little since the morning, and avery heavy sea was running. It-wasonly with great difficulty and at con-siderable risk that the Crew boardedthe Life-boat at her moorings by meansof two shore boats. She got away at10.40, and fifty minutes later shereached the vessel, the Greek steamerMenelaos, of Piraeus, laden with coal andcoke and bound for Tunis from Rotter-dam. Her steering gear was disabled ;her hatches had been stove in ; and shewas unmanageable. Earlier in the daythe Motor Life-boat from Bembridge,Isle of Wight, had gone out to theMenelaos, but her crew had not thenwished to leave her, and had asked thata tug should be sent to their help.When the Selsey and Bognor Life-boatreached the steamer at 11.30 P.M. shefound that twelve of the crew hadalready been taken off by a Leylandliner ; but the liner dared not stand byany longer, as the Menelaos was driftingrapidly towards shoal water, and hadsent out an S.O.S. The Life-boat wentalongside, and the remaining seven menon board the Menelaos climbed downa rope over the ship's side and droppedinto the Life-boat. Just after midnightshe brought them safely ashore. TheMenelaos herself became a total wreck.For this service the usual monetaryawards were made.

Three Gallant Irish Fishermen.THE Institution has awarded BronzeMedals to three very gallant Irishfishermen, John Nolan, John Cahill andhis son Joseph Cahill, of Tralee, Co.Kerry.

At 4.0 in the afternoon of 7th Novem-ber last, the S.S. Co-operator, of Tralee,left Fenit to go up the bay to Tralee,with 113 tons of maize on board. Astrong gale was blowing from theW.S.W., with squalls of whole galeforce. A heavy cross sea was running,and the weather was thick and wet.When less than halfway up the bay thesteamer shipped several heavy seas,which carried away her tarpaulins andwashed off her hatches. She began tofounder at once about a quarter of a mileoff shore. It was then six o'clock.

The steamer's plight was seen by thethree fishermen, who at once launched asmall pulling boat. She was only thirteenfeet long. Fortunately the steamer wasslightly down wind from where theboats were lying on the beach. But forthat the three men could not havehoped to reach her, as it would havebeen impossible for them to row againstwind and tide. They got their boatunder the lee of the sinking steamer.Then, after several attempts, they wereable to get alongside and rescue thethree men on board.

The boat was very heavily loadedwith six men on board. It was im-possible to return against wind and tide,so she was headed to leeward, themen hoping to make the shore about amile up the bay. As it was, the returnjourney was very perilous. The boatwas so low in the water that water wascontinually washing in, and it was onlyby constant baling that the men wereable to keep her afloat. They succeededuntil they were within a few feet of theland. Then the boat was swamped andsank, but all six men managed toscramble ashore. No sooner were theyon shore than the engineer of thesteamer fainted.

It was a rescue carried out in circum-stances of great danger. The diffi-culties against which the three bravefishermen had to struggle can bejudged by the fact that they onlytravelled one mile and a quarter, andthey were out for an hour and a half.During all that time they were inimminent peril of losing their own lives.

Besides the Bronze Medals awardedto them for their gallantry, they haveeach received a monetary award. TheMedals were presented to the men on9th February by Mr. Finian Lynch,Minister in the Irish Free State forLands and Fisheries.

Rescue from a Yacht.Letters of Gratitude.

AT 7.15 on the evening of 22nd Novem-ber, a wireless message was received atWalton-on-the-Naze, Essex, from theSunk Lightship, reporting that theLightship could see flares four to fivemiles to the north-west. A whole galewas blowing from W.S.W., veering laterto N.W. The weather was thick andvery cold, and a very heavy sea wasrunning. The Life-boat got away at7.45, picked up the flares, and, twohours after leaving her Station, foundthe vessel in distress. It was theAuriga, of London, a 101-ton auxiliaryschooner yacht, with seven men andtwo women on board. The yacht had

struck on the Shipwash Shoal, haddrifted off and had sprung a leak. Itwas only with great difficulty that theLife-boat was able to get alongside, asthe yacht was pitching and rollingheavily. She found the nine people onboard in a state of exhaustion, but theywere all rescued without mishap, andfive hours later, shortly before 3.0 inthe morning, she brought them ashore.

A few hours later the Life-boat wasagain called out, and again it was ayacht that was in distress. Just before8.0 in the morning a message came fromthe Coastguard at Clacton-on-Sea that ayacht was driving towards the Gunfleet

Sands, about four miles S.S.W. ofClacton pier. The Clacton Motor Life-boat was already out on service inanswer to signals from the Nore LightVessel, so the Walton boat put out at

1 8.15. The gale had moderated, but itwas still blowing strongly from W.N.W.An hour and a quarter later the Life-boat found the yacht, the auxiliarycutter Holiday, of Yarmouth, driftingwith no one on board. She took her intow and brought her into Walton,arriving at 1.15 P.M. On these twoservices the Life-boat was out forthirteen hours.

The rescue of the nine people onboard the Auriga was carried out withskill and despatch, and the Institutionhas marked its appreciation of this fineservice by awarding to Coxswain JohnC. Byford its Thanks inscribed onVellum, and by making extra monetaryawards to Coxswain and Crew.

The Life-boat which carried out theservice was the new Waltou boat,E.M.E.D., which H.E.H. Prince Georgenamed last summer, and a message wasreceived from the Prince heartily con-gratulating the Coxswain and Crew.

The Thanks of the Rescued.

The skipper of the Auriga also wrotesending his " heartfelt thanks to theCoxswain and Crew whose promptitudeand superb seamanship were entirelyresponsible .for our lives," and thefollowing letter, most graphicallydescribing the feeling of those rescuedfrom peril of their lives at sea, wasreceived from Mrs. F. E. Pellew, whowas on board the yacht with her onlyson.

" I was one of the unhappy crew ofthe yacht Auriga that was wrecked onSaturday night on the Shipwash Sand-bank. Our engine out of action; theyacht drifting helplessly in the gale ;all seemed lost ; when the Life-boatcame out of the waste of water and wasskilfully brought alongside and one byone we jumped on board.

" I cannot express my feelings as Ishould like to do towards those dearLife-boatmen. It is almost impossible,but one thing will remain in my mind to

my dying day : those strong features ofcourage and endurance, and thosestalwart figures, lit up by the light ofthe engine-room. They seemed to be intheir element and on a pleasure cruise,not heeding the danger they had putthemselves to to come and save us. ...I have done much sailing and cruisingof all sorts and in different seas—for Ilove the sea. I have also met withvery bad seas and often had verybad weather and circumstances tobattle with, and have almost beendrowned twice, but I have never as yetmet men like those of the Walton Life-boat, with such kindness and considera-tion. . . .

" Their kindness to us all and the skillwith which the boat was handled in thedifficult passage to Walton-on-Naze arethings I shall never forget as long as Ilive. These men are real heroes. . . . Irealize now what wonderful men arethose who man the Life-boats all aroundthe coast, and who are so willing to lisktheir precious lives to save others.None of your Crews can be kinder,braver, more efficient than that of theWalton Life-boat. . . . I also wish tomention the exceedingly kind welcomewe received on landing at the pier ofWalton at 2.30 A.M. on Sunday morningfrom all those who had come to seeabout our welfare, in giving us hotcocoa and seeing to our being conveyedto the hotel where every comfort wasawaiting us. Your local Secretary,Captain W. Oxley, was kindness itself,and I do hope he will feel how sincerelygrateful we are, all of us, for his hospi-tality and attentions.

" I only want to add that my next-door neighbour's little son, aged 6, wasso struck with the narration of our ship-wreck that he instantaneously asked togo out, and went and put 2d in thebox for the Life-boat Fund, and to-dayhe rushed up to me and told me that hehad put his 2s. 6d., all his week's money,in the box, because they had savedTante Frances's life. . . . I have torepeat the story so many times and henever gets wearied of it."

The Institution later received a gift of£50 from Mrs. Pellew's husband, Captain.E. I. P. Pellew, O.B.E., M.R.C.S,

L.R.C.P. Mrs. Pellew's only son, it isinteresting to know, is a direct descen-dant of Admiral Pellew, first Viscount

Exmouth, who was one of the originalsubscribers to the Institution when itwas founded in 1824.

An Ex-Naval Man's Gratitude.ON 25th October last, the Motor Life-boat at Walton-on-the-Naze, Essex,went to the help of a small boat which,while on the way from Walton toClacton, had been carried out to sea.The sea was rough, with heavy squallsblowing. The Life-boat found the boatwith two men on board. She was quite

UNTIL 1921 Motor Life-boats could only |be placed at Stations where it waspossible to build a Launching Slipway,or where the boat could lie safely atmoorings. In that year an experimentalMotor Life-boat was built, 35 feet by8 feet 6 inches, weighing under 7 tons,and driven by a 35 h.p. engine. Thiswas the first attempt made to provide aMotor Life-boat light enough to launchoff a Carriage on the open beach. Thisboat was stationed first at Eastbourne,and is now at Kirkcudbright. She wasfollowed by another boat of the sametype, an improvement on the first, butstill experimental, which was stationedat Scarborough in 1923. Finally, lastyear, another boat was built of the sametype, but with important modifications,which constitute it a new class of thistype. This boat was stationed atHythe, and with her completion theInstitution believes that the experi-ments have reached a successful con-clusion.

The Lightest Type.The Hythe boat is 35 feet 6 inches bv

8 feet 10 inches. She has 115. air-cases,and 8 water-tight compartments. Sheis fitted with a new engine of 1^ litrecapacity, developing 35 h.p. at about3,000 revolutions per minute, andgiving a speed of 7J knots. Duringtrials this engine ran for an hour withthe engine-room full of water and theengine submerged. She carries enoughpetrol to be able to travel 116 miles atfull speed without refuelling. She is avery handy boat. She has a very smallturning circle and can make a half turnin eighteen seconds. She takes onlytwenty seconds to come to a dead stopfrom full speed. In another twentyseconds she can be moving at full speedastern. The Hythe boat is the first tohave vertical relieving scuppers in thesides, instead of valves in the deck. Ofthese she has sixteen. Should a seabreak on board, she could free herselfin about twelve seconds—more quicklythan any other type of Life-boat. Ifshe were capsized, even with a hole inher bottom, she would right herself infour seconds. • In rough weather-she cantake thirty people on board.

The light Motor Life-boat describedabove is of the self-righting type, andthe great majority will be self-righters.There are, however, a number ofStations where the Crews definitelyprefer a Life-boat which, while not ableto self-right, is more stable, and, there-fore, less likely to capsize. A lightMotor Life-boat of the Liverpool type

. has, therefore, been designed, which willbe 35 feet 6 inches by 10 feet ; will be ofapproximately the same weight as thelight Self-righting Motor Life-boats;and will be driven by the same 35 h.p.engine, giving a speed of 7£ knots. Thefirst boat of this new type is now underconstruction for Hoylake.

A 41-Foot Beach Boat.

There still remain, however, a numberof Stations which present a doubleproblem. Their launching conditionsmake it impossible to equip them withone of the heavier types of Motor Life-boat. At the same time, the conditionsat sea require a larger and heavier typeof Life-boat than the light 35 feet 6 inchboats. The Institution has thereforedesigned another type of Motor Life-boat which is a further development ofthe Norfolk and Suffolk type, and willbe known as the Aldeburgh type. Thisnew type will be 41 feet by 12 feet3 inches. It will have twin screwsand two 35 h.p. engines, which willgive a speed of about 8 knots. Theengines will be watertight, and willwork independently, but they will be inone engine-room. The boat will carry110 gallons of petrol, which will enableher to travel 130 miles at full speed.Like the 45 feet 6 inch Watson cabintype, this new type will have no end-boxes, but a flush deck fore and aft.She will have one large cockpit, withroom for twenty-four men, under a largeshelter,.which will also cover the engine-room. She will be a handy boat like thesmaller and lighter self-righting boat,able to come from full speed to a stand-still in twenty-five seconds, and thenfrom a standstill to full speed astern inanother twenty-five seconds. Like theself-righting boat, she will have verticalrelieving scuppers in the sides. Of thesethere will be eight. She will be able to

take seventy people on board in roughweather.

Successful Experiments.This boat will be much heavier than

the 35 feet 6 inch boat. Her weightwith gear and crew will be 16^ tons.She will, in fact, be too large and heavyfor launching off a carriage. This typeis intended for those Stations where theLife-boat is run down the open beachon skids. Such a boat has not only tobe specially designed with an unusuallyflat bottom, so as to keep as nearly aspossible upright while being launched,but has to be very solidly built to standthe bumping on the beach. Hitherto theheaviest Pulling and Sailing Life-boatto be launched in this way has weighed,with gear and crew, 12J tons. Duringlast autumn trials were held at Aldeburgh(Suffolk) with the late Campbeltown(Argyllshire) Motor Life-boat, a 43-footWatson boat weighing 16| tons. Thesetrials were carried out on a semi-permanent Slipway of rollers laid on thebeach. The boat had not been speciallybuilt for such launching, but the trialsserved the purpose of showing that aMotor Life-boat of this weight could besuccessfully launched off the open beach.

It is not too much to say that thesenew designs are the most importantdevelopments of recent years. Thesatisfactory completion of the experi-ments with a light 35 feet 6 inch typewill enable motor power to be used at alarge number of Stations where, up tothe present, the launching conditionshad made it impossible to place MotorLife-boats, and the Institution is nowgoing rapidly ahead with the work ofequipping them with motor power. Ofthe fifteen Motor Life-boats under con-struction at the end of the year, thirteenwere of this light type. Twelve of theseare self-righters and the other is thelight Liverpool type which is being builtfor Hoylake.

The 41-foot Aldeburgh boat for launch-ing off the beach will also make it pos-sible to place Motor Life-boats atseveral important Stations, at which,up to the present, it has been necessaryto retain Pulling and Sailing Life-boats, owing to the difficulties oflaunching.

The Wreck of the "Indian Chief/' 5th January, 1881.The Aldeburgh Life-boat's Journey of 120 Miles.

By Walter Riggs, Honorary Secretary of the Aldeburgh Station.IT is just fifty years since the barqueIndian Chief, outward bound fromMiddlesbrough to Yokohama, waswrecked on the Long Sand, off the mouthof the Thames, and the twelve survivorsof her crew of twenty-nine men wererescued by the Ramsgate Life-boat, Cityof Bradford, with the help of theRamsgate tug A id—as fine a piece ofrescue work as has ever been recorded.

It must not be forgotten, however,that there are very many stories ofendurance and heroism of our Life-boatmen that do not actually result inlife-saving, but are none the less worthyof recognition. It is fitting that justfifty years after the event one such storyshould now be told in full for the firsttime—the story of the part played by theAldeburgh Life-boat in that memorableshipwreck in 1881.

The Indian Cnief was wrecked at 2.30in the morning of 6th January, but herplight was not known to the Life-boatauthorities at Ramsgate till nearly noon,the information being brought by aninward bound smack which had sightedthe ill-fated vessel ashore. The weatherprevailing at the time was a typicaleasterly gale, with frequent snow squallsand the temperature below freezingpoint. I do not propose to deal herewith the particulars of the wreck andrescue, which have been so well describedelsewhere,* but should like to place onrecord what the Aldeburgh Life-boat,George Hounsfield, did in this historicgale.

The fiis; information of the wreck ofthe Indian Chief, received at Aldeburgh,was in a telegram from Gravesend to theeffect that a vessel was ashore on theLong Sand. It appears that a steamer,bound for the Thames, when proceedingup Swin had sighted her on the Sand,between the snow squalls, and had giventhe information on her arrival at Graves-end. The telegram was received in

Aldeburgh about 9 o'clock in the morn-ing of 6th January, and the assemblysignal was immediately fired. A crewwas collected, but, owing to the terriblesea running, it was considered almostimpossible to launch the boat. Afterconsultation it was decided to make anattempt and a crew volunteered. TheCoxswain was Rodney Pallant, withCharles Ward, Second Coxswain, whilethe Crew included such other well-known,life-savers as James Cable, Tom Ward,Harry Pallant, Fred Fisher, B. Kersey,E. Markham, John Green, GeorgeBurrell, Tom Cable and W. Mann. Onevolunteer named Jim Hurrey should bementioned, as he was not a regularLife-boatman, but volunteered on thisoccasion. Two other members of theCrew were skippers of Aldeburgh codsmacks, who happened to be at home atthe time.

A Difficult Launch.A launch was eventually effected at

11 a.m. after great difficulty. It wasimpossible to get across the long line ofbreaking water on the shoals oppositethe town, so the boat, under sail, reachedalongshore between the shoals and thebreakers for about two miles before shecould edge off into deeper water. Shewas fitted with dipping foresail andstanding mizzen, and both the stormsails were close-reefed, but, in spite ofthis, the wind was such that the boatwas full of water to leeward between thedrum heads, and the crew were soonsoaked through. Conditions were slightlybetter when they managed to fetchunder the lee of the Shipwash Sands.Heavy snow squalls were continuallyexperienced, but they managed to pickup the Sunk Light Vessel. From here,in the light of the westering sun, whichnow broke through the snow, the seascould be seen breaking on to the LongSand and shooting up mast-head high.

Soon the mast of the Indian Chief wasseen through driving snow, with the seasbreaking over the foretop. Only one

mast was standing, the main and mizzenhaving been carried away during theprevious night. Just at this time, asthe sun was about setting, the boatfetched up under the lee of the wreckclose enough to ascertain that therewere no living souls on board. The Cox-swain having satisfied himself on thispoint, the Life-boat was put about andheaded for the Sunk Light Vessel inorder to find out if it had any informa-tion of any other Life-boat having beenin communication with the wreck. How-ever, it was impossible to get in touchwith the crew of the Light Vessel. Itwas known later the Ramsgate Life-boathad rescued the survivors at dawn thatsame day, some hours before the Aide-burgh Life-boat received the news ofthe wreck.

Running Before the Gale.It was not possible to take the boat

back to Aldeburgh to land there, so itwas decided to run to Harwich, and theCoxswain put his helm hard up and boreaway. Terrific seas were running acrossthe shoal water outside the entrance toHarwich Harbour. At times the boatseemed to be becalmed between theracing seas and at other times she feltthe full force of the gale and torealong on the backs of the breakingcombers. By marvellous helmsmanshipthe boat was kept well before the wind.Had she broached to nothing whatevercould have saved a capsize. Harwichwas eventually reached shortly after8 P.M., where the men were lookingforward to some dry clothes and somefood.

The Honorary Secretary at Harwichwas immediately on the spot to receivethe men. He reported that the HarwichLife-boat was away after a wreck onthe Pye Sands, that the Clacton Life-boat had also had a call and was awayon service, and that there was anotherwreck on the Maplin Sands and he hadno boat to send. He had tried to get intouch by telegram with the HonorarySecretary at Aldeburgh, the late Mr.James Osborne, but he had been unableto do so. He besought the Coxswainand Crew to set out again for the wreckon the Maplins. They had not had timeto change or even to get any food, but

they mustered again immediately, and,with the exception of one man who wastoo exhausted, Jim Hurrey, referred toabove, who was not a regular Life-boat-man, they all responded to the call.Hurrey's place in the boat was taken byBob Wilson, an Aldeburgh man whowas stationed at Harwich as a pilot.

A Night at Sea.

The wind was still blowing gale forcefrom the eastward. There was no tugavailable, so they had to beat out ofthe Harbour. Once clear they managedto fetch to windward to the Naze, thenceacross the lower end of the Gunfle^et to-the Swin Middle Light Vessel. Ongetting into communication with thecrew of the Light Vessel they ascer-tained that the vessel was ashore on theMaplins, but they could not get thebearings, and no flares or signals hadbeen shown for two hours past. Thesearch could not be continued in thedarkness and snow, so the Coxswain letgo his anchors between the Swin MiddleLight Vessel and the Maplin Pile Lightto wait till daylight. It was blowinghard, snowing and freezing all thatnight. At daybreak the conditions hadsomewhat improved, so they got theiranchors up and ran down to the MaplinSands, where they sighted the wreck.She was a large foreign barque in ballast,driven well up on to the Sand. TheLife-boat ran down within a quarter ofa mile of her and then saw the ClactonLife-boat'-draw out from under the leeof the wreck. She ran down and herCoxswain spoke the Coxswain of theClacton Boat, who reported that all weresafe, and that he was proceeding toClacton.

The George Hounsfield then reached offinto the Swin, under the lee of theBarrow Sand, where she spoke a Ger-man steamboat, bound down, and askedfor a tow. The German, however, tookno notice. There were three steamboatsriding with two anchors down in theSwin, waiting for the snow to clear beforeproceeding. The Life-boat managed toget within speaking distance of one ofthem, the Paradox, of Goole, hailed thebridge, and found that she was boundnorth. The snow clearing, the Paradox

got her anchors and took the Life-boatin tow up to abreast of the AldeburghNapes. The tow was slipped about twomiles off shore, and the wind being stilleasterly the Coxswain up foresail andbore away for the home Station. It wasjust coming dark, about 4 p.m., and hewas warned off by signals, as the seaswere very heavy on the shore and it wasconsidered too rough for a safe landing.However, the Crew were by this timeutterly exhausted and could not havecarried on to Harwich; so, in spite ofthe warning, the Coxswain put hisdrogue overboard and ran for the shore,where, after all, he managed safely tobeach the boat.

120 Sea Miles.It was now the evening of 7th Janu-

ary. The George Hounsfield had beenaway from her Station on this work forthirty hours.* For the whole of that

time—except for the hour or so ashoreat Harwich—her Crew had been in anopen Pulling and Sailing Life-boat, inan easterly gale, with snow squalls.

During that time the George Houns-field had travelled 25 sea miles to theLong Sand, and 21 back to Harwich.On leaving Harwich, in search of thesecond wreck, she travelled 24 miles tothe Swin Middle Light Vessel, where shehad tried to get the bearings of thewreck, and from there to the Maplin, nearwhich she had lain all night, and hometo Aldeburgh, was another 50 sea miles.Altogether, in those thirty hours, shehad travelled 120 sea miles.

There are still alive from this originalcrew Charles Ward (Second Coxswain),Tom Ward, Tom Cable, Harry Pallantand Jim Hurrey. Only last year twoothers, James Cable and John Green,passed away.f

National Safety Week.THE National Safety Week Council, onwhich the Institution is represented, isarranging to hold its second SafetyWeek from llth May to 16th May next.The object of the Week is to arouse thepublic to the need of additional effort toreduce the heavy loss of life fromaccidents of all kinds, and the Council isable to report that as a result of the first" Safety Week," held last year, therewas a marked reduction in the numberof accidents.

Last year the Institution invitedthe Honorary Secretaries of Life-boatStations, wherever possible, to arrangefor their monthly or quarterly exercisesof the Life-boats to take place duringthe Week, and the same request is madeto them this year, as the Institutionfeels that everything possible should bedone during this Week to bring hometo the public what the Life-boat Servicedoes to ensure safety at sea.

Foreign Life-boat Services. II.The United States (State Service.

Established 1848).

Since the publication of our extensivenote on this Service in the Novemberissue of The Lifeboat we have receivedthe Annual Report of the U.S. Treasuryfor 1930, which provides two mattersof interest to supplement that note.Eight more 36 feet 6 inch. Motor Life-boats have been added to the 104 ofthis type already on the coast, five ofthem having reached their destination" after travelling many hundreds ofmiles under their own power in excellentcondition without experiencing anybreakdowns or trouble " ; and twelvemore of these boats are to be built in1931. There is here a striking simi-larity in the development of the smallertype of Motor Life-boats in the Britishand the U.S. Service, a type of which,however, the latter has long since madevery extensive use.

But the most remarkable feature ofthe Report, especially for British readers,is that which contains at once an admis-sion and an appeal. The admission,almost startling in its courageous can-dour, is that " The Life-boats in anumber of the States are very old, andare giving out to a perilous degree.They have battled with the storms formany years, in fact, too long for safety.It is imperative that they be replaced."And this reference to what is describedas "-this unfortunate situation" is fol-lowed by the statement: " Then thereare new stations to be supplied, andother stations of strategic importancenot now having Life-boats that shouldhave them if the best interests of com-merce and humanity are to be served.It is to these ends that this earnest, soli-citous appeal is submitted." The italicsare ours, and we do not think we shallbe accused of over-emphasis. For it issurely remarkable that a State Depart-ment, entrusted by the people of theUnited States with the provision andmaintenance of the Life-boat service,and spending thereon three or fourtimes the sum expended by the RoyalNational Life-boat Institution, should

not only admit the inefficiency of anumber of its Life-boats, but shouldapparently feel impelled to utter a mostearnest appeal for help in this predica-ment. Our knowledge of the internalworking of the machinery of the CivilService of the U.S.A., and of the weightwhich just sentiment on a matter ofnational and international importancemay carry with the State in that greatdemocracy, is insufficient to enable usto hazard a guess as to what effect thisappeal is likely to have ; and, indeed,to be sure whether we are not witness-ing iere an appeal from the narrowlimitations laid down by a Treasury,compelled to ration each department ofState, to the generosity of the mil-lionaire who so often plays the part ofthe deus ex machina in American affairs.But two points emerge from a con-sideration of the passage we havequoted. One is the admiration whichwe feel for the fins courage and seaman-like directness with which the Comman-dant, Admiral Billard, states his convic-tions as to the needs of the Service. Theother is the feeling that, in spite of thedifficulties with which the Institution isfaced in securing the funds needed forthe efficient maintenance of the Service,the voluntary system, in which it. wasthe pioneer over a hundred years ago,and which has been followed by thegreat majority of those countries whichhave established a Life-boat Service, isthe one best suited to the provision ofthat service, at any rate, in the case of amaritime people.

Holland (Voluntary. Established 1821).

As many of our readers are aware,Holland, to its lasting credit, was thefirst country to follow the lead ofBritain in the organisation of a Life-boat Service. Indeed, while the Institu-tion was formally founded on 4th March,1824, as the result of Sir WilliamHillary's appeal to the nation in 1823,a number of public-spirited men formedthe two Dutch Societies in Novemberof the same year. The North and SouthHolland Society was founded at Amster-

dam; another Association, the SouthHolland Society for the Rescue of theShipwrecked, was formed at Rotterdamonly a few weeks later. It may perhapsseem regrettable that a work so trulynational in its scope and purpose shouldbe controlled by two separate organisa-tions, but it is gratifying to know thatthey have worked in complete harmonyduring the century of their existence,this being facilitated by the fact thatthe North and South Holland Society,limiting its operations to a sphere lessextensive than its name implies, pro-vides the Service from the northernmostpart of the coast as far as Scheveningen,while the South Holland Society ad-ministers the Service southwards fromthat point.

The Annual Reports of the twoSocieties for the year 1929 give ampleevidence of progress in every direction,and notably in the development oftechnical efficiency, whether in the con-struction of motor boats, the solutionof the problem of launching boats ona flat beach, the adoption of wirelesstelephony, or, finally, the examinationof the possibilities of co-operation be-tween aircraft and Life-boats in therescue of life from shipwreck.

This latter problem led to a jointmeeting of the Committees of the twoSocieties with the Military Air Depart-ment at Amsterdam in February, 1929.

This meeting came to the conclusionthat the services of aircraft can beutilised in two ways, namely :—

1. For the purpose of taking observa-tions, and

2. For establishing a line connexionbetween the stranded ship and the shore,which latter possibility had alreadybeen proved by a trial near the Hook ofHolland.

As, however, a line connexion be-tween the ship and the shore is uselesswhen the distance exceeds 300 metres,and as at that distance it is generallypossible to establish communicationwithout the aid of an aeroplane, eitherby firing a line from the ship to theshore or from the shore to the ship, it isimprobable that the aid of an aeroplanewill often have to be called in, in orderto establish a line connexion. It must

also be borne in mind that at the shortdistance of 300 metres and less a Life-boat will generally be able to rendereffective service.

As it is, perhaps, not obvious to thelayman that there is no use in establish-ing a line connexion at a greater dis-tance than 300 metres, it is worthpointing out that at greater distancesthe sagging of the heavy line from whichthe weight of a drowning person issuspended becomes so great that he ispulled through the water, and thisprocess, if carried out over a long dis-tance, is fatal to the " rescued." Casesmay, nevertheless, occur in which air-craft might be able to render goodservice, and the Dutch Societies aretherefore grateful for the co-operationwhich they have received from the AirDefence Department, which has givenapproval to instructions issued to theSocieties' representatives on the coast,whereby the latter are authorised, sub-ject to certain conditions, to call in theaid of aircraft, if necessary, for thesaving of shipwrecked persons.

The Report of the North and SouthHolland Society adds the followingcomments :—

" Our local Committees and repre-sentatives will, however, not proceed tocall in the aid of an aeroplane unless ithas been ascertained that this is reallynecessary. They will have to bear inmind that the aircraft coming to theirassistance will not only have to fly tothe point where aid is required againsta very severe storm, but will also haveto land later on in the same severeweather.

" The daring achievement of airmenin the case of the Salento on the 26thNovember, 1928, has rightly arousedthe admiration of many ; during thesevere storm which was raging at thetime, they established a connexion, andthe Italian Government recognised thecourageous act of Flight Captain vanWeerden Poelman, First Flight-Lieutenant van Dorst, Flight-SergeantBosch and Flight-Sergeant-Major v. d.Hoek. But they and the persons who,though unacquainted with the needs ofthe Life-boat Service, called them up,did not know that to establish a con-

nexion with the Salento, which, lay1,200 metres from the coast, could leadto no result. The knowledge thusgained is, however, now in the hands ofour local Committees and representa-tives, and we therefore hope that if theaid of aircraft is asked for. it will berequisitioned by our local Committeesand representatives."

BEACH MOTOR LIFE-BOATS : GIRDERTRACKS.

The North and South Holland Societyhas decided to introduce the beachMotor Life-boat, of the type which is inuse in the Danish Life-boat Service,namely, a wooden Life-boat providedwith a 25 h.p. petrol motor, the pro-peller of which turns in a tunnelformed by two heavy wooden keels.

This Life-boat weighs about 4 tons.The character of the coast in Denmarkenables these Boats to be launchedwithout the use of a carriage. That isnot possible in Holland. The beachMotor Life-boat must, therefore, beconveyed along the beach on a carriage,which demands great pulling powerwhen the conditions are unfavourable.

" In consequence, the Society is nowengaged in carrying out trials for thelaunching off a carriage, which is in-creased to the desired weight by meansof iron, and the rear axles of which areprovided with the girder tracks of the' Roadless Traction, Limited,' of Houns-low, which have been found satisfactoryby the English Life-boat Society forthe -transportation of heavy boats.

" This arrangement ensures only veryslight subsidence even on soft ground.For these trials we obtained a set of thegirder tracks in question. In placeswhere, owing to the absence of horsesor the difficulty in obtaining themquickly, motor tractors are necessary,these will probably have to be morepowerful for launching the beach MotorLife-boats than those which we nowuse. For this reason we are on thelookout for a tractor of this kind. TheEnglish Life-boat Society has had atractor constructed for the same pur-pose according to its own specifications.The acquisition of a beach Motor Life-boat with the requisite pulling power for

its tractor is, therefore, a problem whichis still under consideration."

WIRELESS TELEPHONY.

In view of the Institution's adoptionof wireless in the case of Motor Life-boats at remote and isolated stations,the following from the Report of theNorth and South Holland Society willbe read with interest:—•

" In considering the equipment oftwo of our Motor Life-boats, theBrandaris, of Terschelling, and theDorus Rijkers, of Helder, with wirelesstelephony receiving installations, weapproached the Director of the Govern-ment Testing Station for Coastal Light-ing at Scheveningen, with a view tobeing included in the arrangementwhich is in operation between wirelesstelephony transmitting and receivingstations on lighthouses and lightships.We received the greatest assistancefrom the Director of the said TestingStation, Mr. P. van Braam van Vloten,and Mr. Ir. P. J. G. van Diggelen, andalso from the Direction of Pilotage. Asa result, the two Motor Life-boatsreferred to are provided with telephonyreceiving sets, which are made inaccordance with the instructions of theGovernment Testing Station, in a verysubstantial design by the NederlandscheSeintoestellenfabriek. They are chieflyN.S.F.4 sets with flexible wiring, andare provided with an on and off switch,a regulating resistance and a built-involtmeter for adjusting the filamentvoltage of the receiving valves. Theset is watertight and arranged in ametal box. The wave-length range is150-300 metres.

" Alongside the Coxswain, near thesteering wheel, a ' Brown ' loud speakeris fitted, protected against water;below deck the use of headphones makesit possible to listen-in when the soundson deck are not clear enough.

" The price of these sets, of specialdesign, and without the loud speakers isabout £90 per installation.

" It is gratifying to report that thesetwo installations, which, together withfurther accessories, will cost about £250,are being paid for by the sum contri-

buted by pupils of secondary schools inthe Netherlands, and handed over to theNorth and South Holland Life-boatSociety in December, 1929.

" The wireless telephony installationsrender it possible for the Brandaris andthe Dorus Rijkers, after leaving their har-bours, to receive reports from the Coast-guard Station which is in telephoniccommunication with the Local Com-mittee of the Life-boat Society. Theadoption of wireless telephony on ourLife-boats may result in the rescue ofshipwrecked persons who might other-wise be lost. It may also prevent aLife-boat making unnecessary trips.

"As a Life-boat may also wish tosend a report to shore, a transmittingand receiving installation for wirelesstelephony will be fitted on board thelatsst Life-boat, the Neeltje Jacob andalso on board the InsuKnde.

THE WRECK OF THE " PRINS DERNEDERLANDEN."

The South Holland Society's Reportfor 1929 contains a very interestingreference to the disaster which overtookthe Steam Life-boat Prins der Neder-landen on the 16th January, 1929, inthe attempt to save the crew of theLatvian steamship Valka, which hadstranded on the Maasvlakte.

" The eye-witnesses on the Valkawere too far away from the spot wherethe Life-boat capsized to make anyaccurate observation—J to| mile accord-ing to the Captain—and in additionthey themselves were going throughanxious hours on the ship, which wasbeing battered by the breakers.

" Nevertheless, interest attaches to thestatement of the Captain that CoxswainVan der Klooster twice succeeded, bystsaming against the high breakers, ingetting close to the ship. On bothoccasions it was impossible to establishany permanent connexion with the shipowing to the violence with which theboat was thrown up and down. Afterthese two attempts, deeper water wassought farther out to enable the Boatto turn, and, by running before thebreakers, to get behind the sandbankagain, so as to repeat the attempt.Notwithstanding the good seamanship

on the part of the Coxswain in avoidingturning the Boat in the breakers, thelast attempt to run before the latterproved fatal to the Boat. She was struckbroadside on and capsized.

" No definite reason for her being thusstruck broadside on can be given, andit is a question whether it was due tothe violence of the elements, eitheralone or in conjunction with a suddendefect in the engine room, or the steeringgear, or an accident to the Coxswain.

" The examination of the Life-boat,carried out by the Navigation Inspec-tion Department, gave no indication ofany defect in the equipment or theBoat's engine.

" The excellent service which shehad rendered during many years withher sister ship the President ran Heel,under very dangerous conditions, isa proof of the sound construction ofthis first type of mechanically-drivenLife-boats, at a time when internalcombustion engines had not yet beenfully developed.

[The Prins der Nederlanden was builtin 1908. Her late Coxswain, who wasdrowned in the disaster in January,1929, took part in the rescue of thecrews of four British vessels, 72 livesin all.]

" Nevertheless, from the explanationsfurnished by Professor Vossnack, it isevident to us that according to themore recent ideas regarding the con-struction of Life-boats, greater sea-worthiness is secured by the presentrounder cross-section of the KoninginWilhelmina type of motor boat. Theenormous dynamic moment which arisesand promotes capsizing if the Boat turnsbroadside to the surf has less effect in aBoat designed on these lines. Inaddition, two motor-driven propellersrevolving in tunnels considerably en-hance the safety of the Boat.*

" As a result of these considerations,orders were given for the constructionof two twin-screw Motor Life-boats, forwhich Professor Vossnack undertook toprepare the plans and the specification,and also to give his general supervisionto the construction.

[These two Boats, President Jan Lclsand President J. V. Wierdxma, went tothe Hook of Holland in August of lastyear, and the second Steam Life-boatwas then withdrawn.]

" Near the Signal Station at the Hookof Holland a powerful military search-light has now been erected, by whichships stranded at the entrance to theNew Waterway can, if necessary, be litup at night in order to assist the rescuework."

Germany (Established as State Service, 1852.Voluntary since 1865).

The Annual General Meeting of theSociety was held on 13th June last,when it was reported that in theprevious year thirty-three persons hadbeen rescued from shipwreck in con-nexion with eight casualties, thirty ofthe rescued persons being saved by theLife-boats and three by the RocketApparatus. It should be noted that inGermany, as in the United States andin France, the same organizationsupplies the Life-boat Service and theRocket Apparatus. This is indeed thecase with most of the Foreign Life-boatServices.

The total number of lives rescued bythe instrumentality of the GermanSociety since its foundation in 1865 is5,236."

There are now 115 Stations, 2 havingbeen closed in the previous year. Ofthe total number, 76 are in the Baltic,and 39 in, the North Sea. Sixty-oneStations are provided with both Life-boat and Rocket Apparatus ; there are39 Stations with a Life-boat only, and15 with the Rocket Apparatus only.Of the 115 Boats there are now 27Motor Life-boats, 12 of which aredecked boats, namelv, 2 steel twin-

screw boats, 5 steel single-screw boats,and 5 decked wooden boats; andthere are 15 wooden open boats, allwith motors installed. Three new openMotor Boats have been placed at NorthSea Stations, and a decked twin-screwMotor Boat, the Bremen, at Norderney.She is a 49 feet by 12 feet 6 inches Boatwith a steel (Siemens-Martin) hull.The propellers are protected by tunnels,as in the case of the Institution's MotorLife-boats. The Boat has numerouswatertight compartments. It is pro-vided with electric light and a wirelesstelephony apparatus, with a radius offifty miles. There is also an electricsearchlight, electric foghorn, and a life-saving net. The exhaust of the twomotors passes through the iron mast.This Boat replaces the single-screw Boatpreviously placed at that Station, whichhas been transferred to Travemiinde,where it will lie afloat in completereadiness to render prompt service tocasualties to aircraft in connexion withthe big Flying Station at that port.The new Boats are provided with Dieselengines.

The engines of the twin-screw MotorLife-boat Bremen develop 144-146 h.p.,and give a speed of 11 knots.

It is interesting to note that theGerman Society, in spite of the meagre-ness of its funds, thought it worth whileto send models of its newest MotorLife-boats to the Antwerp Exhibition.The Report also refers to the adoptionof the line-throwing pistol, invented byMr. Sander, an engineer. This line-throwing pistol appears to have given somuch satisfaction that the Society pro-pose to substitute it for the RocketApparatus on the coast as and whenoccasion arises.

The German Society now has twenty-four Station Branches, and thirty-eightFinancial Branches. A considerablepart of the revenue is raised by whatmay be called Flag Days; but thegreater proportion of the support comesfrom shipping and shipbuilding centres.The Report deplores the fact thatalthough considerable progress has beenmade in technical development, therewas a fall in the number of subscribers.It concludes with an appeal to the

public to help the Society to maintainits'great humane work on the basis ofthe voluntary self-sacrifice of the Crewsand the voluntary contributions ofpublic-spirited men and women.

Spain (Voluntary, with a Subsidy from theState. Established 1880).

At the present time the Societypossesses 59 Stations. The latter com-prise 48 unsinkable self-righting andself-draining boats, of which 16 havemotors on improved systems. It hasalso 81 line-throwing apparatuses of theSpandau, Boxer, Lyle, Dawson andEvans systems.

The Superior Council of the Societyhas, since its foundation in 1880,recordedand given awards for the saving of morethan 12,000 lives, and presented 18 GoldMedals, 998 Silver Medals, 2,785 BronzeMedals, and £7,155, exclusive of theamount of the monetary awards emana-ting from special foundations.

It has, since its foundation in 1907, res-cued, by means of its boats and life-lines,the crews of 120 sea-going vessels, ofwhich 15 were English, 10 French, 7Italian, 1 Portuguese, 6 Norwegian, 1

Danish, 2 Russian, 1 Austrian, and 3 ofthe United States.

Belgium (State Service. Established 1832).During 1929 the Belgian Life-boat

Service rendered services to five vessels,two being Dutch and three Belgian, andrescued 66 lives. The Life-boats whichcarried out these rescues were thoseat Ostend, Middelkerke and Zeebrugge.

The Belgium Fleet now has twoMotor Life-boats, which were built by aGerman firm in 1926. These boats are,with slight modifications, the same asour own Watson Cabin Life-boat, com-plete plans of which were supplied bythe Institution to the Belgian MarineAdministration. It is particularly in-teresting to note that these boats werebuilt in Germany as part of the WarReparations, and we doubt if any pay-ment made under this head has beenmore appropriate, and more likely tohelp in healing the wounds of war, thanthese two Lifa-boats, provided by an ex-enemy country in order to help Belgiumin saving those, of whatever nationalitythey may be, who are in peril of ship-wreck on her coasts.

The Storeyard's Children's Party.THE seventh Christmas party, given bythe staff of the Storeyard at BroomfieldStreet, Poplar, with the help of the staffat Headquarters, took place on 20thDecember at the Bromley Public Hall.Four days before this a tea was given to240 children at the special school for thedefective in Piggott Street. At theBromley Public Hall 170 children werepresent. Besides the tea there was aconcert and community singing, dancingand a gymnastic display, and every

child was presented by Father Christmaswith a bag of fruit and sweets and a toy.At the end Captain G. H. Bevan,O.B.E., R.N., Deputy Chief Inspectorfor Stores, who has now reached theretiring age, was presented with a letterfrom the children of Broomfield Street,Poplar, expressing their sorrow that hewas leaving the Institution. A smallboy and girl then presented a bouquetof flowers to Mrs. Bevan and a fountain-pen to Captain Bevan.

The Twenty Branches with the Highest Collections, 1929-30.WE publish below a table showing thetwenty Branches which made the largestcontributions to the Institution duringthe financial year ending the 30th Sep-tember, 1930. Fourteen are English,four Scottish, and two Irish.

The total sum raised by these twentyBranches was £50,803, which is £8,303more than in 1929. This is a verynotable increase. On the other hand,in 1929. a contribution of £745 was

Reference has already been made tothe magnificent achievement of Glasgowin beating the City of London Branch by.over £4,000, and taking the first place inthe list. This is the second time thatthe City of London has lost its place atthe top. The first occasion was in 1924,the Centenary year of the Institution,when it was displaced by the Manchester

sixth in 1929, is now eighth ; Bristol hasgone down three places, and Leeds two.It will also be noticed that there are anumber of cities and big ports which donot appear among the first twenty.

In the City, with its fluctuatingpopulation, and in the big seasideresorts, where there is a great influx ofsummer visitors, any calculation of theamount per head is impossible. Ofthose Branches in the list where such acalculation can be made, Oxford comesfirst with nearly 3^d. a head—a veryfine achievement. It is worth recallingthat in 1928, the last occasion whenOxford was among the first twenty, ithad the best contribution per head, withjust over 3Jrf. Glasgow comes secondwith just over 3d. per head, and fiveothers have contributed over Id. perhead—Edinburgh, Leith and Granton,Bradford and District, Dundee, Aber-deen, and Southampton and District.Last year only four of the twenty-fiveBranches raised over Id. per head. Thisyear the number is seven.

Many Branches which do not appearin the list have a higher per head contri-bution than any of the twenty, for, ofcourse, the smaller the population, the

easier it is to get a high collection perhead. This fact emphasises the achieve-ment of Glasgow, which, with a popula-tion of over a million, has collected morethan 3d. per head.

In order to appreciate the significanceof the '' per head " figure, it should beremembered that the Institution needsannually, in order to provide andmaintain the Service, £300.000, and thatthis represents \\d. per head of thepopulation of Great Britain and Ireland.

11 per Head.It will be seen, therefore, that every

Branch should aim at getting at leastI d . per head of the population within itsarea ; that none should be satisfied withless than Hd., and that those large townswhich raise more than this have reasonto congratulate themselves on theeffectiveness of their methods of appeal,and to be proud of the generosity withwhich their citizens have responded tothe appeal of the Service. But, asstated above, it must be borne in mindthat it is much more difficult to achievethis result in great cities, with a hugeworking-class population, than in smalltowns and seaside resorts.

Scotland's Achievement.OXE of the notable Life-boat events of1930 was the great increase in theamount contributed to the Institutionby Scotland. In a year in which of theeight districts into which Great Britainand Ireland are divided for the purposeof the Institution's appeals, four showedan increase, and the other four a decrease,Scotland increased her contribution byover £12,000, or nearly 80 per cent. Hercontribution in 1929 was under £16,000.In 1930 it was over £28,000. Of thissum over £9,000 was in the form ofspecial donations, but, even withoutthese, the increase was over £3,000,which is more than £1,000 higher thanthe increase of any other District.

In 1926, the year before the ScottishLife-boat Council was formed, under theChairmanship of the Duke of Montrose,Scotland contributed £10,722. Eachvear since then has shown an increase,

and Scotland has now much more thandoubled her contribution of five yearsago. During the four years of the Coun-cil's work the average annual contribu-tion has been £17.193. During the fourprevious years it was £11,308, so that theaverage increase is over 50 per cent.

Under the constitution of the ScottishCouncil, every Branch which remitsover £100 is entitled to have one repre-sentative on the Council, and a secondrepresentative if it remits over £200.The number of Branches entitled torepresentation has increased in the pastfour years from 18 to 34, and thenumber of representatives from 29 to 47.

As these figures show, many Brancheshave contributed towards the notabledevelopment in Scotland, but the chiefcredit belongs to Glasgow. Its record lastyear, and, in fact, during the past fouryears, is unequalled by any Branch in

the history of-the Institution. In 1926,the year before the formation of theScottish Council, Glasgow contributed£2,391, being fourth in the Institution'slist of Branches, with the City of London,Manchester and Liverpool occupying thefirst three places. The next yearshowed an increase of over £1,000, thenext a further increase of over £600, andthe next a further increase of over£1,000. These increases brought thecontribution of Glasgow in 1929 to£5,152, and the Branch then took thesecond place in the list, the first placebeing occupied by the City of London,with £9,930.* In 1930, Glasgow contri-

In so doing, it muchmore than doubled its previous record,took first place in the list of Branches,the City of London being second with£8,987, and contributed a larger sumthan had ever been received from oneBranch, with the exception of Man-chester's contribution of £14,854 in1924, which included a sum of over£10,000 raised as a special Cente-nary gift to the Institution. On thisnotable achievement, Glasgow, andthe whole of Scotland, deserves thehearty congratulations of all Life-boatworkers.

The whole of Greater London, which includesa number of Branches, rai ed £20,030 in 1929,and £20,737 in 1930.

Donation from the Scottish Fisheries.IT will be remembered that during the

terrible gales in the winter of 1929to 1930, great damage was done tothe Scottish fishing fleet. On one day,llth November, 1929, it was estimatedthat the fleet, when fishing off the EastAnglian coast, lost over 27,000 nets.*At the request of the Secretary of Statefor Scotland the Lord Provosts of the

Scottish cities opened a public subscrip-tion list to help the fishermen to replacetheir losses. After all claims had beenmet, there remained a balance of£135 9s. 5d. This balance has beenhanded over to the Institution by theFishery Board of Scotland, and theBoard wrote that it did this " in viewof the intimate connexion the Institu-tion has with the life of Scottish fisher-men."

District Conferences.Meeting of Workers from North and Mid-Wales.

A CONFERENCE of Life-boat workersfrom Branches and Ladies' Life-boatGuilds in North and Mid-Wales washeld at Llandudno on the 22nd October,1930. Delegates from ten Branches andeight Ladies' Life-boat Guilds were wel-comed by the Chairman of the UrbanDistrict Council at the opening of theConference, and, in the unavoidableabsence of Sir Godfrey Baring, Bt.,Chairman of the Committee of Manage-ment, Mr. George F. Shee, M.A., Secre-tary of the Institution, presided, sup-ported by the District OrganisingSecretary.

Mr. Shee thanked the Chairman ofthe Council for his presence and wel-

come, and then gave a brief survey ofthe work of the Institution. The Dis-trict Organising Secretary thanked theDelegates for the splendid work whichthey were doing, and invited their helpin giving him the names of anybodywho would assist in starting a Ladies'Life-boat Guild in any of the followingplaces: Ruthin, Ruabon, St. Asaph,Newport (Salop), Shifnal, Bishop'sCastle, Ledbury, Ross and Flint.

Service during the past twenty years,and a similar resolution of appreciationof the services of Captain Howard F. J.Rowley, the recently retired ChiefInspector of Life-boats. Both resolu-tions were enthusiastically carried. Inreply Mr. Shee thanked the Delegates,and said he would have much pleasurein conveying to Captain Rowley thetribute to his services which had beenproposed and so well received.

A discussion then took place onbranch work and methods of publicityand propaganda, during which thefollowing points were made :—

On the question of " What constitutesa successful Branch ? " it had beenfound that the aim should be to have agood working Committee and a strongLadies' Life-boat Guild, and to arrangeregular sources which could be reliedupon to raise a definite income eachyear. The basis of all Branches shouldbe annual subscriptions, because thissource of income was not affected, aswere Life-boat Days, by a bad season atseaside places or bad weather. •

Principal Methods of Appeal.A general discussion elicited the fact

that Annual Subscriptions, Life-boatDay, House-to-House Collections andDinner-table Collections were regardedas the principal forms of appeal whichcould be carried out by a successfulBranch. It was agreed that a greatfactor in most of these efforts was thecollector, and a band of enthusiastic andwilling collectors was essential.

On the question of appeals for annualsubscriptions, the value of the personaltouch was strongly urged, and it wasagreed that a postal, appeal, if sent outon the right lines, could be made effec-tive. The importance of sending outapplications for the renewal of all con-tributions in a systematic way wasemphasised.

The great value of the Ladies' Life-boat Guild was stressed by manyBranches, and the numerous ways inwhich the Guild, as a whole, and themembers of the Guild, as individuals,could help the work were dealt with.Apart from the efforts already men-tioned in connexion with a successful

Branch there were Whis.t and BridgeDrives, Dances, Bazaars, Concerts,Carol Singing, etc., etc. For individualmembers of the Guild there were privatecollecting boxes and collecting cards.The leaflet provided by the Institution,with a small envelope attached, forHouse-to-House Collections had beenfound by a number of delegates to beone of the most successful methods ofcollecting.

With regard to Life-boat Days, itwas agreed that a day should be heldwherever permission could be obtained,because the people who gave on theseoccasions could not be reached by othermeans. Early application for a definitedate was considered very advisable, andexperience had shown the value ofgetting clergy of all denominations torefer to the Institution and its work inthe sermon on the Sunday before Life-boat Day.

Other points dealt with were : —The value of the Essay Competition

all over the country.The importance of sending the

Journal to contributors of 10s. andupwards.

The value of placing out collectingboxes in hotels, shops, etc.

The facilities for prompt and economicprinting at Headquarters.

The importance of em^ hasising thecost of the Institution's administration—under 5 per cent.

The value of Branch Annual Meetings.The value of using the films which

were provided free for the use ofBranches, and also the lantern slideswith their accompanying lecture.

During the Conference the attentionof Delegates was particularly drawn toLeaflet No. 1, published by the Institu-tion, which gave hints and suggestionson the organisation of appeals andSpecial Efforts, and also to LeafletNo. 10, which gave a complete list ofthe literature and stores which wereavailable for the use of Branches incarrying out appeals.

In the afternoon the delegates wentto the Palladium Theatre and saw thenew Life-boat Film for Wales. ThisfilTi, which will be available for the useof Branches, shows two Welsh Life-boat

Stations, two Irish Stations on the otherside of the Irish Sea, and an EnglishStation on the other side of the BristolChannel. It is in two reels, one takingfifteen minutes and the other twelveminutes. The Delegates were enthu-siastic in their approbation of the film.

The Royal Life-boat Matinee.THEIR Majesties the King and Queen,Patrons of the Institution, H.R.H. thePrince of Wales, K.G., President, andH.R.H. the Princess Louise, Duchess ofArgyll, Patron of the Ladies' Life-boatGuild, attended the fourth annual Life-boat Matinee in London, which was heldon 7th November at the LondonHippodrome.

The theatre was lent to the Institutionby Mr. R. H. Gillespie, ManagingDirector of Moss Empires, Ltd., and thesale of tickets was in the hands ofa special committee of which theMarchioness of Londonderry, D.B.E., a iVice-President of the Ladies' Life-boatGuild, was chairman.

Their Majesties were received by thePrince of Wales, Princess Louise,Duchess of Argyll, the Duchess of Port-land? a Vice-Patron of the Guild, theMarchioness of Londonderry, Sir God-frey Baring, Bt., Chairman of the Com-mittee of Management, the Hon. GeorgeColville, Deputy-Chairman, the Mayorof Westminster (Captain J. F. C. Ben-nett), and Mr. George F. Shee, M.A.,Secretary. Bouquets were presented tothe Queen and Princess Louise, Duchessof Argyll, and, in the interval, Mr. R. H.Gillespie, Managing Director of MossEmpires, Ltd., and Mr. Frank Bcor, theManager of the Theatre, were presentedto Their Majesties.

Among those who gave their patronageto the Matinee were their Excellenciesthe French, Bslgian and Japanese

Ambassadors, the Norwegian andDanish Ministers, and the Mayors andMayoresses of Westminster, Finsbury.Islington, Holborn and St. Pancras.Among those who took tickets were theBelgian and Japanese Ambassadors, theGerman Embassy, and the Maharajaof Bikaner, the Maharaja of Jammu andKashmir, the Maharaja of Baroda andthe Sultan of Jodhpur, who were inLondon attending the Indian RoundTable Conference.

A variety programme was given, andamong those taking part in it wereMiss Gladys Cooper, Sir Gerald duMaurier, Mr. Henry Ainley. Miss BeatriceLillie, Miss Isolde Menges, and Mr.George Robey. To all who so generouslygave their services the Institution wouldlike publicly to offer its warmest thanks.The programme also included " Heroesof the Sea/' a sound film of the Life-boatService, taken by British InternationalPictures, Ltd., and presented to theInstitution by Mr. John Maxwell, theChairman of the Company. It had notpreviously been shown in public.

The programme sellers were boysfrom the training ship Stork, in chargeof Captain C. Gordon Grant. R.N.

The Hippodrome has accommodationfor 1,587 people, and every seat wassold, many applications for ticketshaving to be refused. The gross pro-ceeds were £1,542 15s. Id., and a messagewas received from the King and Queenthat they " had enjoyed the Matineeimmensely."

Buttons After All!IN the report of Life-boat Day inGreater London, in the last issue of TheLifeboat, it was stated that for the firsttime no buttons had been found in thecollecting boxes. But buttons were,after all, given for the help of theService—but in a very different way.

One of the collectors in St. Pancrastells us that she was stopped by an oldwoman who was selling a miscellaneous

collection of small goods in the street,and the following conversation tookplace.

Life-boat Carol Singers.LAST Christmas a number of Branchesagain arranged carol-singing parties.East Grinstead (Sussex), which has beenmost successful with its carol-singing forthe past four Christmases, collected over£16 in two evenings, in spite of fog.Selsey and Bognor again had a party,

which divided its proceeds—over £14—between the Institution and the Institu-tion for the Blind. Other Brancheswhich went carol-singing were Crawleyand Three Bridges (Sussex), Lsather-head (Surrey), Tenterden (Kent), andWolverhampton (Staffordshire).

any wind and with a smooth sea, on receipt ofinformation from the Coastguard that a vesselwas ashore on the Pentland Skerries, andfiring rockets. With the full tide the positionwas reached within an hour, and the steamtrawler Strathgyle, of Aberdeen, was foundaground, having stranded while bound fromAberdeen to the fishing grounds. Her crew ofnine were ready to leave, but as the tide rosethe vessel refloated, and, although makingsome water, was able to proceed to Wick underher own steam.—Expenses, £7 11s.

August 2.—THE SOUTHEND-ON-SEAMotor Life-boat saved the houseboat Diadem,of Faversham, and landed her five occupants.About 8 P.M. it wets reported from the PierHead that a boat was in distress off CanveyIsland, and the Life-boat put out in a strongsoutherly breeze with a rough sea. TheDiadem was found bumping heavily on a sand-bank. The owner, his wife and three children,and their dog, were on board. The boat wastheir only home. As the man would not leave,the woman and children, who were veryfrightened, were taken off and landed. TheLife-boat then returned to the boat andbrought it to the Pier.—Expenses, £11 13s.

August 10.—THE PLYMOUTH Motor Life-boat was called out at 4 A.M. in a dense fog,with a moderate southerly wind, and rescuedthe occupants, forty in number, of two launchesand two boats, which were lost in the fog. Theboats belonged to the Royal Air Force and hadbeen with a party to Yealni River. All effortsto trace the boats having failed, the Life-boatwas sent out and found them near the Mew-stone Rocks, at anchor in a dangerous position.Fortunately, the wind and sea had not in-creased while the boats were out, or disastermight have overtaken them. The local Air

. Service Authorities expressed their apprecia-tion for the prompt help given, and the Har-bour Master also expressed his appreciation.—Expenses, £6 Os. 6d.

August 18.—THE ROSSLARE HARBOURMotor Life-boat was launched at 7 A.M. in aS.W. wind, with a heavy ground swell, as asteamer was seen to be ashore on SploughRocks, off Greenore Point. There had been athick fog during the night, but this had liftedsomewhat at the time of the launch. The vesselproved to be the s.s. Redvers Buller, of Cardiff,which had run aground in the fog while onpassage from Cardiff to Wexford with a cargoof coal. The Life-boat remained in attendancein case her help was needed, and eventuallythe steamer came off the rocks under her ownpower and proceeded on her way to Wexford.—Permanent Crew. Expenses, 7s.

August 19.—THE DOUGLAS Motor Life-boat was launched at 9.50 A.M. in a moderateW.S.W. gale, with a very heavy sea, as themaster of an incoming steamer reported pass-ing a yacht in difficulties eight or nine milesS.E. of Douglas Head. On reaching the spotindicated the Life-boat found the yacht, whichwas the Cymro, of Holyhead, being towed inthe direction of Ramsey by the steam trawlerDean Swift, of Fleetwood. The Cymro had

engine trouble, and all her sails had been blownaway. The Life-boat accompanied both vesselsto Ramsey Pier Head and then returned toher Station, arriving there at 3 P.M.—Expenses,£5 13s. 6d.

August 20.—THE MOELFRE Motor Life-boat was launched at 12.15 A.M. in a moderateS.E. gale, with a very rough sea and rain, andlanded the crew of three of the ketch Henrietta,of Kilkeel. The Henrietta, which was outwardbound from Birkenhead with a cargo of coal,had come to anchor off the east end of MoelfreIsland, but in the heavy weather her anchorshad dragged and she was in danger of beingdriven ashore. The Life-boat ran alongsideand quickiy got the three men aboard, but itwas not possible to return to Moelfre, so theBoat put into Beaumaris, and was taken backto her Station at 11.30 the same morning.—Expenses, £13 16s.

August 21.—THE FILEY Life-boat waslaunched at 4.20 A.M. in a whole S.E. gale,with a very heavy sea, to the help of a numberof fishing cobles, of Eiley. The boats had beenleft at anchor overnight, but a sudden gale hadsprang up and the whole fleet was in dangerof destruction by being driven ashore. TheLife-boat was the only available boat thatcould safely be launched in such conditions ofsea and weather, and by means of her menwere taken out and put aboard their craft andthe majority of them were got safely ashore.The Life-boatmen gave their services free onthis occasion.—Launching expenses, £4 17s.

August 21.—THE BRIDLINGTON Life-boat was launched at 2 P.M. in a strong S.S.E.gale, with a heavy sea, to the help of thesalvage steamer Kernoozer, of Yarmouth, whichwas in difficulties owing to the sudden gale andwas seen making for harbour. Entry into theharbour was very dangerous owing to the heavysea running across the bar. With great diffi-culty three Life-boatmen were put aboard thesteamer, and with their assistance, and withthe Life-boat in attendance, the steamer safelyreached harbour. This service was witnessedby some thousands of spectators.—Expenses,£10 4s. 3d.

August 21.—THE GREAT YARMOUTHAND GORLESTON Motor Life-boat waslaunched at 6.10 A.M. in a moderate to freshS.S.E. gale, with a very heavy sea and rain, asthe Coastguard had reported that a vessel,about one miie E. by S. of the CoastguardStation, was sending up distress signals. Sheproved to be the motor yacht Etenia, of King'sLynn, which had left that place the day beforefor a run to Ostend. She had nine personson board, including the Mayor of Lynn andMr. Gargett, who owned the yacht, a memberof the King's Lynn Local Committee of theInstitution. The Life-boat got under the leeof the Etenia, and with great difficulty twoLife-boatmen were put aboard. Then withtheir help and with the Lite-boat in atten-dance the yacht was taken into safety.—Expenses, £10.

August 23.-—THE EASTBOURNE MotorLife-boat was launched at 9.30 A.M., informa-

tion having been received from the Coastguardthat a vessel was in distress about two milessouth of Beachy Head. Before the Life-boatcould reach the position a pleasure steamerhad taken the vessel in tow—the motor yachtFirefly, of Southampton—which had enginetrouble, and was in difficulties in the heavysea and strong southerly breeze. The Life-boat accompanied the two vessels until theyreached Newhaven in safety and then returnedto her Station, arriving at 1.45 P.M.—Expenses,£17 18*.

August 23.—THE HUMBER No. 1 MotorLife-boat was launched at 3.40 P.M., in a strongE.S.E. breeze, with a rough sea and rain, andrescued the crew of two of the auxiliary sloopDakar, of Hull, which was loading gravel onthe south end of the Inner Sinks, and had gotinto serious difficulties when overtaken by theincoming tide. The sloop was swept andburied by heavy seas, and the Life-boat, aftergetting as near as possible, effected communi-cation by means of her line-throwing gun. TheDakar then passed a hawser to the Life-boat,and by this means she was gradually towedclear of the beach. The Life-boat still re-mained in attendance until it was ascertainedthat the sloop had sustained no damage. TheDakar then made for Grimsby under her ownpower, and the Life-boat returned to herStation, arriving there at 4.30 P.M. Theowner, Mr. P. Burn, of Beverley, sent a con-tribution of £5 to the Institution in apprecia-tion of the services rendered.—PermanentCrew Expenses, 7s.

August 29.—THE BLYTH Motor Life-boatput out at 3.20 P.M. to the help of the steamdrifter Ocean Lassie, of Yarmouth, which hadstranded during foggy weather on the northend of the Sow and Pigs Rocks, and had notreplied to the signals of the Coastguard. Itwas found that the drifter had a crew of tenon board and was bound for the Tyne withfish. The Life-boat remained by her until, asthe tide rose, she refloated at about 4.45 P.M.As she was able to proceed to the Tyne andrequired no help, the Life-boat returned to herStation.—Expenses, £5 11s.

August 30.—THE FILEY Life-boat waslaunched at 1.10 P.M., in response to signalsfrom a vessel ashore at Horse Rock Scar,during foggy weather, with a moderate swelland moderate northerly wind. The vessel wasfound to be the steam drifter Girl Ena, of Yar-mouth, with a crew of ten on board. HerSkipper asked that the Life-boat should standby, and she remained until shortly after 7 P.M.,when the drifter refloated and was taken toScarborough. The Life-boat returned to herStation at 7.45 p.m.

An unfortunate accident occurred at thelaunch of the Boat, John W. Willis, a memberof the Crew, being killed by the carriage wheels.A pension was granted to his widow, an allow-ance made for a dependent daughter, and thefuneral expenses paid.—Expenses, £22 14s. 6d.

September 6.—THE NEW BRIGHTONNo. 2 Motor Life-boat put out at 6.30 P.M. ina moderate southerly breeze, in response to a

message received from the s.s. Mono, Isle, andthe Mersey Docks Board, that a vessel was indistress on Taylor's Bank. A coasting steamer,however, had meanwhile come to the help ofthe steamer. While returning to her Stationthe Life-boat came across the fishing boatAysJia in difficulties. She was beating upagainst the breeze, but would have been unableto reach a safe position before the ebb tidemade, without help, so the Life-boat took herin tow.—Expenses, £7 18*.

The following services were also reported :—July 21.—THE BERWICK-ON-TWEED

Motor Life-boat was launched in a rough sea,with a strong N.N.E. breeze, at 10.50 A.M. andsaved the yacht Stella, of Greenock, bound fromHull to the Clyde, rescuing her three occupants.The Coastguard had reported the casualty bytelephone, and the Life-boat came up with theyacht, about three miles east of Burnmouih,not under control. She was taken in tow bythe Life-boat and brought safely across thebar and into Berwick Harbour at 12.30 P.M.—Property Salvage Case.

August 8.—THE LONGHOPE Motor Life- ,boat was launched at 4.30 P.M. in a light S.E.breeze, with a smooth sea and dense fog, onreceipt of information from the Coastguardthat a vessel was ashore on the PentlandSkerries, and found the steam trawler LouisBotha, of Grimsby. Her crew had launchedthe ship's boat and laid out an anchor. Then,as the trawler was in danger of turning overwith the strong tide, they had landed on theSkerry. On the arrival of the Life-boat thecrew returned to their vessel, and the Life-boatstood by in case her help was required. At9.30 P.M., as the Life-boat was running out awire hawser to another trawler in order to towoff the Louis Botha, the latter suddenly slippedoff the rocks into deep water, and, with theLife-boat still in attendance, made for Long-hope Harbour, reaching there about midnight.—Property Salvage Case.

August 16.—THE CA1STEH Life-boat waslaunched at 6.25 A.M. in a moderate W.N.W.breeze, with a rough sea, as the steam trawlerJean Dore, of Boulogne, was seen to be ashoreon the Middle Caister Shoal. The Life-boatwent alongside, and gradually, with the risingtide, the vessel refloated, and, with the Life-boat still in attendance, proceeded south underher own power, coming to anchor off the mouthof Yarmouth Harbour.--Property SalvageCase.

August 30. -THE RUNSWICK Life-boatrendered assistance to the steam trawlerCornelian, of Grimsby, which had stranded,with a crew of fifteen on board, at KettlenessPoint, while returning from the Faroe fishingground, during thick weather. Information ofthe casualty had been received from the Coast-guard, and the Life-boat proceeded to thetrawler at 9.25 P.M. Additional anchors wererun out, and the Life-boat then stood by unti lthe following morning, when she helped torefloat the trawler. Reported that the President of Germany hadawarded Certificates to the members of theCrew of the Margate Motor Life-boat, who, onthe 28th-29th December, rendered assistanceto the German motor ship Hermine. Voted 10s. to the Life-boat Coxswain andSecond Coxswain, who. with the Second MotorMechanic, put out in the Life-boat's boardingboat on the 21st July and landed the onlyoccupant of the motor launch CintiHa, whichhad broken down off New Brighton Pier, in astrong N.N.W. wind, rough sea, and ebbingtide.

Voted £3 to three men for putting off ina small boat and rescuing eight men of thesteam trawler Lord Percy, of Grimsby, whichhad run aground, and later sank, on the northside of the IsJe of Swona, in the Orkneys, onthe 3rd June. The trawler ran on the rocksin a dense fog at 5 A.M., and the three men,hearing the steamer's whistle, put off andhelped in an attempt to run out an anchor.While this was being done the trawler's boatwas dragged down into 25 fathoms of waterby the anchor chain. The skipper, who was inthe boat, was drowned ; but one of the crewwho was with him was rescued. The rescuers'boat had a narrow escape from being draggedunder also, as it was towing the other boat, butthe tow rope snapped under the strain. Afterthis mishap the rescuers, who had run con-siderable risk, took off the crew and broughtthem safely ashore. The body of the skipperwas also taken ashore.

Voted 5s. to one of the New Brighton Life-boat Crew, who put off in the Life-boat's motorboarding dinghy, with the Permanent MotorMechanic, and rescued the sole occupant of theyacht Mascot, of New Brighton, which, whilebeing brought to its moorings, was caught in amoderate south-westerly gale, and, with thetide ebbing, was drifting towards GladstoneDock Wall, where she would in all probabilityhave been dashed to pieces. The yacht wastowed safely to her moorings.

Voted £3 7s. 6d. to nine men, in two boats,all members of the Life-boat Crew, whorescued the crew of two of the fishing boatJfancy, of Llanduduno, which got into diffi-culties off Little Onne's Head and was indanger of driving on to the rocks, in a strongwesterly wind, with a rough sea, on the 6thSeptember. Some of the men put off from theshore in a motor launch, and the others, whowere in a fishing boat near by, got a line to theendangered boat and kept her from going ashoreuntil the arrival of the launch. The crew ofthe endangered boats were taken into themotor launch, which then took the two fishingboats in tow. On the way back a third fishingboat was also taken in tow and brought intosafety. Also granted 7s. 6<i. to the Life-boatCoxswain, who had kept a look-out from theshore during the rescue ; and 5s. for fuel con-sumed.

The Life-boat put out at 4.15 P.M., andon coming up with the Boozer about two and ahalf miles S.S.W. of the Ballycotton Light,took her in tow to safety. This was the firstservice of the new Motor Life-boat, and it isinteresting to note that the fishing boat shesaved was formerly the Life-boat Ol'n'erGoldsmith, stationed at Ballycotton fifty yearsago.—Expenses, £4 12*. 6rf.

Sept. 19th.—The MARGATE Motor Life-boat rescued the Captain and Mate of theS.S. Treport, of London, which struck somesubmerged wreckage in the Prince's Channel,while outward hound from London for Treport,and became submerged after being beached onthe Girdler Sands. The Life-boat was calledout in response to information received fromthe Coastguard, and left at 7.50 A.M. in astrong S.E. breeze with a moderate sea. Amotor boat also put out from Margate andtook off five of the crew, but the Captain andMate remained for a time. They were rescuedby the Life-boat as the steamer settled downand became awash.—Expenses, £4 (is. (W.

Sept. 19th.— The WICKLOW Motor Life-boat was launched at 9.15 A.M. in a strong S.E.gale with a very heavy sea, and stood by alocal fishing boat, which was in danger of beingdriven ashore. So rough was the sea that itwas impossible to rehouse the Life-boat on herreturn, but this was done on the followingmorning.—Expenses. £6 8*.

Sept. 19th.—The SCARBOROUGH MotorLife-boat was launched in a S.E. gale with arough sea and rain, as three motor cobleswhich had gone out fishing had not returned.The Life-boat left at 1.40 P.M., and finding thecoble The Eagle with her engine disabled about200 yards from the Pier, escorted her toharbour. Going off again in a N.N.E. directionfor about two miles she fell in with the Premierand stood by until she reached safety. Pro-ceeding again on the same course, she metthe Relianrr. II., and accompanied her intoharbour. By this time the weather was verybad, and the last boat was fortunate in makingthe harbour without accident.—Expenses,£15 15*.

Sept. 19th.—The ROKKLARE HavbowvMotor Life-boat saved the fishing luggerBenita, of Wexford, and rescued her crew offour during a whole E. by S. gale with a veryheavy sea and rain. The boat was seen bythe watchman on duty to be, flying a signal ofdistress, and the Life-boat was launched at8 A.M. The Benittt was found to be makingwater as she had sprung her mast and hadcarried away her rigging. With considerabledifficulty communication was effected, and thedisabled boat was assisted into RosslareHarbour, the Life-boat returning to herStation at 10 A.M.—Permanent Crew : Ex-penses, 7*.

Sept. 19th.—The PADSTOW No. 2 MotorLife-boat put out in a moderate S.W. gale witha rough sea and saved the yacht Emanuel, ofBridgwater, rescuing her two occupants, whenshe was in a dangerous position off the DoomBar. The Coastguard had reported that thevessel was in need of assistance, and at 6.15 P.M.the Life-boat went out and towed the yachtinto safety.—Expenses, £2 5*.

Sept. 19th-20th.—The WEYMOUTH MotorLife-boat rescued the crew, two in number, ofthe ketch Leonie, of St. Malo, and afterwardssaved the vessel. Information was receivedthat flares of distress had been seen underSandsfoot Castle, and the Life-boat waslaunched at 10.35 P.M. in a strong S.W. galewith a heavy sea and rain. The ketch, whichwas bound from Poole to Roseoff, in ballast,was found ashore. The men on board weretaken into the Life-boat, which reached Wey-mouth again at 11.25 P.M. At 9 A.M. thefollowing morning the Coastguard reportedthat a small vessel was drifting out of PortlandHarbour. As no tug was available the Life-boat put out at 9.20 A.M. The vessel wasfound to be the abandoned Leonie. Two menwere placed on board and she was broughtinto Weymouth Harbour.—First service : Ex-penses, £12 10s. ; Second service : PropertySalvage Case.

Sept. 20th.—The HYTHE Motor Life-boatwas launched in a strong gale with a heavy seaand rain, and stood by the motor vesselSenator, of Hamburg, the engine of which hadbroken down. The Life-boat put out at7.55 P.M., the Coastguard having reported thatthe vessel was drifting up Channel, flying asignal of distress, five miles to the S.E. ofDungeness. The - Life-boat found a tugendeavouring to effect communication withthe casualty. The third attempt was success-ful. The Life-boat stood by the tug and thevessel until they neared Dover, and thenreturned, as her services were no longerrequired.—Expenses, £22 13*. Cxi.

Sept. 20th.—The PLYMOUTH Motor Life-boat landed eighteen of the crew of the S.S.Umberleigh, of London, which had stranded inBovisand Bay during a whole S.S.W. gale witha very heavy sea and rain, while bound fromAntwerp to Barry, in ballast. The Life-boatwent out at 3.30 A.M., and was asked by theCaptain to stand by. This she did in terrificweather, it being reported that the galereached a force of eighty miles an hour. Atdaylight the Life-boat left the steamer afterarranging to return at 1 P.M., but at 9.30 A.M.an urgent wireless call was received, and sheimmediately went back. Eighteen of theUmberleigh's crew of thirty-four were taken offin the breeches buoy and landed at Plymouth.At 4.30 P.M. the Life-boat was again called outto stand by the ship while she was beingrefloated, and returned at 5.30 P.M.—Expenses.£15 16s.

Sept, 23rd.—The PETERHEAD MotorLife-boat rescued thirty-two lives from theS.S. City of Osaka, a vessel of 6,000 tons, whichhad stranded in thick weather, about one mile

to the south of Whinnyfold. The steamer hadleft the Tyne the previous day for New York,in ballast, with seventy-two persons onboard. Information of the casualty wasreceived from the Coastguard at about 6 A.M.,and the Life-boat was promptly launched. Theweather was thick with a rough sea and amoderate southerly gale, but owing to theposition of the vessel not having been givenexactly, the Life-boat failed to find her. andreturned. On learning the correct position,the Life-boat again put out and reached thecasualty at 10 A.M. She remained with heruntil 5 P.M:, and then took off eight men andlanded them at Peterhead. Later she put outfor a third time and rescued a further twenty-four men. She then returned to her Stationat 6 P.M., twelve hours after she first set out.The remainder of the steamer's crew wererescued by Life Saving Apparatus. TheCommittee granted an additional reward to theCrew in recognition of this long and arduousservice.—Expenses, £5 17s.

Sept. 27th.—The SCARBOROUGH MotorLife-boat escorted into harbour six driftersand a motor boat. At 1.15 P.M. a telephonemessage had been received from the WhitbyLife-boat Coxswain that a small vessel washeading south towards Scarborough. TheLife-boat Crew assembled and waited events.At 3.30 P.M. the vessel was sighted, but onaccount of the very rough sea and state of thetide she was unable to make harbour and putto sea again. Shortly afterwards six driftersappeared in sight and the Life-boat waslaunched at 5 P.M. in a strong N. gale, with avery heavy sea and heavy rain, to stand bythem and the motor boat as they made a dashfor harbour. The drifters, the La Parisienne,of Lowestoft, Brighter Hope, Nellie Gardnerand Arerfall, of Banff, Treasure, of Grimsby,and the Dewie Rose, of Fraserburgh, togetherwith the motor boat Valkyrie, of Fraserburgh,eventually made harbour with the Life-boatin attendance. The Life-boat was rehousedat 6.40 P.M.—Expenses, £17.

Oct. 1st.—The WHITBY Motor Life-boatwas launched at 11.35 A.M. in a moderateE.N.E. breeze, with a rough sea, and showersof rain, and escorted into harbour the motorfishing boats Faith and Irene, of Whitby.Several boats had gone off to their crab pots at5 A.M., but by 9 o'clock they had all returnedwith the exception of these two. A watch waskept, and at 11 o'clock the Faith was sightedsome distance to the north. As the sea wasby this time breaking heavily across theharbour entrance, it was considered advisableto launch the Life-boat in case her help wasrequired. The Faith was met and escortedsafely into harbour. The Life-boat then layalongside the Fish Quay until at 1 P.M. theIrene was sighted, and she too was met andescorted home.—Expenses, £9 6s. 6<f.

Oct. 1st,—The BERWICK-ON-TWEEDMotor Life-boat was launched at 9.30 A.M. ina moderate W.E. gale, with a rough sea andstood by four local fishing boats. It had beenseen that the boats were experiencing great

difficulty in making harbour owing to the veryheavy seas that were breaking on the bar, andthought advisable to send the Life-boat out incase her help was needed. Eventually all theboats made the hazardous crossing safely, withthe Life-boat in attendance.—Expenses,£2 10s. 6d.

Oct. 2nd-4th.—The KXMOUTH Life-boatwas launched at 8.15 A.M. in a moderateeasterly wind with a moderate sea, and stoodby the motor vessel Ben Johnson, which hadstranded on the Pole Sands while bound fromSouthampton to Exeter with a cargo ofbenzol. The Sen Johnson carried a crew ofnine, and is owned by the National BenzoleCo. Her crew declined to leave, so the Life-boat remained with her all day, returningashore about 5.30 P.M. On three subsequentoccasions the Life-boat went out, at midnightand at 1.5 P.M., and then at 11 P.M. on thefollowing day. The vessel was eventuallytowed off by tugs. A gift of £5 5*. was re-ceived from the National Benzole Co.—Expenses, £72 10*.

Oct. 5th.—The LOWESTOFT Motor Life-boat saved the motor fishing lugger Tennessee,of Lowestoft, and rescued-her two men in theearly hours of the morning when she wasswamped by the heavy sea in a S.W. gale whilefishing. Information that the boat was indistress had been received from the Coast-guard at 3.40 A.M., and a few minutes later theLife-boat went out. Distress signals were seenin a northerly direction, and the boat wasfound. Her occupants—an old man and aboy of fourteen—were taken into the Life-boat in an exhausted condition. The boat'sengine had failed, her anchor had parted, andshe was drifting into heavy seas just as theLife-boat picked her up. She was towedashore.—Expenses, £33 17s. 6rf.

Oct. 8th.—The GREAT YARMOUTHand GORLESTON Motor Life-boat renderedassistance to the motor vessel Eiffel Tower, ofLondon, which had fouled a wreck on theNorth Bank while making for Yarmouth. Thevessel was first observed by the Coastguard,and when a flare was seen the Life-boat waslaunched at 5.15 A.M. in a moderate S. galewith a very rough sea. When she reached theEiffel Tower the latter was about half a mileS.W. of the St. Nicholas Lightvessel. TwoLife-boatmen were placed on board, and afterreturning to port for a tug the Life-boatwent to sea again and stood by until thevessel was safely in the harbour.—Expenses,£21 13s.

Oct. 8th.—The BERWICK-ON-TWEEDMotor Life-boat was launched at 3.30 P.M. ina strong N. wind, with a rough sea, and rain,and stood by the motor fishing boat WhiteHeather, of Burnmouth. A message had beenreceived earlier from the Coastguard that afishing boat was making for Berwick, and asthe sea was breaking very heavily on the barit was thought advisable to send out the Life-boat in case her help was needed. She waitedat the harbour bar until the While Heatherhad crossed safely, and then returned to her

Ladies' Life-boat Guild:New Appointments.

THE Viscountess Bertie of Tliame,who has been Chairman of the CentralLondon Women's Committee of theLadies' Life-boat Guild since 1925, hasresigned, owing to the fact that she isnow living almost entirely in the coun-try. Lady Bertie was awarded the goldbrooch of the Institution in 1929, inrecognition of her valuable services tothe Life-boat Cause. She has beensucceeded as Chairman by Lady Dorothyd'Oyly Carte, the Deputy-Chairman,who has been a member of the com-mittee since 1924, and the ViscountessBearsted has become Vice-Chairman.
