OLS INTRODUCTION
• After the Hebrews conquered the Promised Land, organized and use the Torah for the basis of their Government.
• In the 11th century B.C the Hebrews faced a new threat from the Philistines.
• The Philistines came from across the Mediterranean Sea and settled on the coast
THE PHILISTINES
• With war against the Philistines coming, The Hebrew tribes united under one ruler, Saul.
• Unfortunately, war with the Philistines was going badly. ..
THE ISRAELITES CHOOSE A KING
THE HEBREW KINGDOM WAS FALLING APART!
• Following the death of Saul, David was chosen as the new King and ruled for about 40 years.
• He is famous for his battle with Goliath (the Philistine Giant)
• DAVID founded the important city of Jerusalem.
DAVID BECOMES KING
• According to the Torah, David’s son Solomon built the Temple in Jerusalem.
• City became the center of Hebrew worship.

• After the death of King Solomon, the Babylonians invaded Jerusalem and destroyed the Temple of Solomon in 587 B.C
• The Hebrews were taken back to Babylon and held captive for 70 years.
JERUSALEM DESTROYED
Why would the Babylonians destroy the
temple?!
• While in Babylon, the Jewish people did not accept the polytheistic beliefs of the Babylonians.
• They began to gathered in places to worship.
• Sacrifices were reserved for the Temple, so the Synagogues were used for prayer, which became increasingly important to the Jewish people.
