It had been 80 days since Santiago caught any fish, but he was not worried, he knew how to be patient. His time was coming and everyone in the village would feel bad about believing he was cursed.

It was beginning to get dark when Santiago realized that something huge was pulling on his line. He would not be foolish, he would allow the fish to tire himself out and then bring him in.

“I just want to get a look at you so I know how big you are my friend” said Santiago. All of a sudden the Marlin leaped out the of the water and Santiago couldn’t believe his eyes. Santiago was determined to succeed. All his years of fishing prepared him for this moment.

The marlin was getting tired now, it shouldn’t be too much longer, Santiago thought. They were both old and tired and neither wanted to give up. But in the end Santiago ‘s determination paid off.

“I will never forget this day my friend, or how you have challenged me”. “I met my match today and wasn’t certain that I would be the winner”.

It was a long way home and Santiago was very tired, but he needed to stay awake. He couldn’t have anything happening to the fish, not now, not after all they had been through. There would be time for sleeping just as soon as he got back to the village.

“I am very happy to see you Manolin” said Santiago, “but now I must rest”. “You sleep Santiago, I will have the villagers help me with your catch and I will be here when you wake up my friend” said Manolin.

Manolin never lost faith in his friend Santiago, and was very proud of him. After all, he had caught the largest fish of anyone in the entire village. “This will be the last time that the villagers say that Santiago is cursed”. “There is much that I can learn from him” thought Manolin.
