Home. It’s where we live. It’s the feeling we get from freshly folded laundry in our bedroom. It’s playing the piano and singing with friends and it’s shared moments over dinner with family. It’s feeling healthy, eating well and enjoying the community we savour with other great people.

It’s looking forward to a little exercise and some laughter at the pub afterwards.

Welcome to your life at Evanston Summit. Welcome home.

“It’s where I’d live.”Brad, Author, movie buff and wine aficionado.

The North Central Family Support Program is looking for volunteers interested in helping out with a number of initiatives. • Volunteers to help with family games/connection after-

• Summer youth engagement volunteers to help with outreach activities for children in Huntington, Bedding-ton and Thorncliff e/Greenview.

If any of these ideas sound interesting or if you have a community engagement idea you would like to pursue, please contact Lili at [email protected] or at 403-275-6668 ext 221.

We will be joining our neighbours at the Northern Hills Community Association to celebrate Neighbour Day this year. Please bring your lawnchairs and join us for the Neighbour Day family movie event held at Vivo on June 18, 2016. There will be games, face-painting, food trucks and a movie viewing in the Vivo Parking lot suitable for the whole family. The movie will start at sundown but ac-tivities will commence around 7 pm. Another season has been completed and what a great season! Competitive teams both in Juniors and Adults all did exceedingly well and represented Huntington Hills Curling Club with PRIDE! In Bantams, we had six teams participate in District Play downs and two teams moved forward to Southern Play downs. Team Tommy Waite won the Silver Medal in Drumheller with teammates Ben Higgins, Kayden Pring and Chris Pratt and Coach Ed Waite - Congratulations on a great weekend of curling! We had two teams in Medicine Hat at the Winter Games and Team Hainstock and Crough both had a great time and made great memories to last a life time! Travelers Southern Play downs for Club Championship teams were held and our men’s team of Bob Genoway, Nelson Loftus, Sheldon Macarenko and Jody Welder sparing for Andrew Stevenson won a berth to the Provincials to be held in October with the winner advancing to the Na-tional Championship. Congratulations Team Genoway and good luck in the fall at Provincials.

March had Huntington Hills Curling Club host the fi rst annual High School Curling Bonspiel. The winners were Notre Dame and Ernest Manning and it was a great day of high school curling. Hopes are that from this inau-gural spiel a league will be a real possibility in the fall of 2016 and we will have inter-school competition for curling. Thanks to all of the schools that supported the Bonspiel and we look forward to a bigger and better event in the coming years. Thank you also to all of the sponsors that supported this event.

Club Championship teams at the time of this publica-tion have not been completed but are on-going and the City Manager’s Bonspiel will be held in early April at the Acadia Recreation Complex. I am sure that our teams will again proudly represent Huntington Hills Curling Club.

Corporate events and family rentals all had a great season and bookings are already taking place for next year. Come on our and join the fun on the ice and in the lounge. Book early.

Our Junior windup was a great success and thank you to all of the parents and coaches that assisted in mak-

ing the day so much fun for all of the athletes! We look forward to seeing you all again in the fall. We will host a Little Rocks 1 and Little Rocks 2 class as we have so many great young curlers, so remember to register in August. Our Junior Program for 9 – 16 year olds will again be Saturday mornings and this program is so much fun – if your children are thinking in giving it a try – give us a call and we can get them out on the ice! Junior Curling is the future of our great sport and the young curlers remind us why we love this sport – it is because it is so much FUN!

Registration for next season will start August 1 and again will be online. Leagues will begin curling late September and there will be Adult Learn to Curl clinics in mid-September and will be off ered again in October. Please refer to the Huntington Hills Curling Club web-site for details or contact Barb in the curling offi ce.

Have a great summer and we look forward to seeing you in the fall!

Huntington Hills Community Association is renovating the existing Hall in to a mid-sized Gymnasium with a renewal of the existing surrounding areas as well as an addition to the side of a front entrance/welcome area. This $2.2 million project will serve existing users and groups at HHCA and will attract others with needs for a gymnasium. Funding has come from City and Provincial levels but we are still in need of contributions and other

assistance to see this through. We will publish ways in which you can contribute (fi nancial or volunteer) in this newsletter, on our website (huntingtonhillscalgary.com) and in our Facebook page. We are a charitable or-ganization so will issue tax receipts for donations above a certain threshold.

Please take a look and help out your community association!

Ready Calgary Community Initiative for Huntington Hills Community MembersAs part of the coordinated eff ort throughout many com-munities in the City of Calgary, the HHCA has joined in a partnership with CEMA’s Ready Calgary to help commu-nity members and their households be best prepared should unexpected events arise, such as, fi res, fl oods, as well as other natural and human-made disasters.

Dr. J. K. Mulloy SchoolOur young students are now fully engaged with the aspects of curriculum that deal with seasons, grow-ing things and life cycles. We are really excited about the possibilities of constructing an outdoor classroom that would benefi t the students at school and also our community of Huntington Hills. We have an overgrown slope that is now going to be cleared of all the scrub and made available for us to use. We are most pleased about using this area as an extension of our existing class-rooms. Outside school hours this area will be a place where everyone from the Huntington Hills community can picnic or use as a performance space, since it is a great slope for an amphitheatre. Our application for a grant from Calgary Parks Foundation was successful, and they have made the generous commitment to pay a Landscape Architect to design the outdoor classroom so that it conforms to City of Calgary and Calgary Board of Education codes and policies. We will then be sub-mitting the required applications to develop this space. In addition to this project, we will also be having the children work towards beautifying the school grounds with the addition of native plants and a butterfl y gar-den. They will also be working under the leadership of Calgary based Canadian Artists, Réal Fournier and Carol Schmidt, to paint murals that will add interest, life and colour to our outside walls. We feel that these projects will serve not only to enhance our school but also to add dimensions to the already wonderful community of Huntington Hills. If you would like more information about any of these proposed projects, please contact the school.

Calgary: City of Animals, this year’s U. of C. community forum, brought together Canadian scholars in history, animal studies, and geography to explore the roles that animals play. The fur trade, cattle ranching, and the Stampede are part of our history. So too is our relation-ship with animals and it is interesting to adopt that per-spective about our shared spaces, as well as the city’s past, present, and future.

We categorize urban animals in diff erent ways, as wild and domestic, livestock, companions, and entertainers. Have you thought of how your interaction with animals shapes Calgary and traces were left on geography, and

The Status of Emergency Preparedness in CalgaryFloods, snowstorms, fi res, power outages, telecommu-nication failures — these are just some of the natural, technological and human-induced events that Calgary needs to be prepared for, according to the recent Sta-tus of Emergency Preparedness report from the Calgary Emergency Management Agency (CEMA)

A quarter of Albertans report having three or more ‘precautionary’ measures in place to support their own preparedness. “We’ve seen an increase of almost 10% in the number of families with 72-hour kits,” says Tom Sampson, Chief of CEMA, noting the growth. “While this is improving, there is still work to be done to ensure citi-zens understand the risks and take some responsibility for their own preparedness.”

The best ways individuals and families can prepare:

Know the risks. Flooding is most common May-15 to July-15 but can occur at any time of year. Be informed about current conditions. When weather watches or warnings are in place, be prepared for severe weather such as fl ooding, lightning, tornadoes, or winter storms. For more information visit Alberta Emergency Alert (emergencyalert.alberta.ca)

Make a plan. Know how to reach your family members if you are not with them when an emergency or disaster strikes.

Get a kit. Ensure you have a 72-hour kit stocked and ready to go that contains supplies to support you and your family for the fi rst 72 hours of an emergency or di-saster.

Calgary.ca/cema provides great resources for individu-als, families and businesses to learn what they can do to prepare.

Hello Residents,

Thinking about a yard improvement project?Garages, decks, fences and even driveway widening are just some of the projects that often require a permit.

“Before you pay for materials, hire a contractor, or do it your-self, we encourage you to visit calgary.ca/homeimprovement or get in touch with us here at The City,” says Jamie Fandrich.

Planning Services Technician at The City of Calgary, Fandrich is part of the team that helps Calgarians understand Alberta’s safety codes and City bylaws on the phone and in person at the Municipal Building. The latest resource Fandrich’s team uses to educate Calgarians on development and building regulations is the webpage calgary.ca/homeimprovement, which allows any-one interested in doing a renovation to browse popular home renovation topics for bylaw and permit information, property and land designation, drawings and forms they will need to complete their home renovation.

“It can sometimes be diffi cult to understand when you need a permit and what City bylaws might impact your project – we’re here to help guide you through the process,” Fandrich says.

Planning, development, licence or permit question? Visit Calgary.ca/homeimprovement or call and visit Planning Services.

Friends of Nose Hillcont’didentity? Consider the routes animals take and the plac-es where they live. We can learn more about viewing the city as an ecosystem, that includes animal life, and see/be humans as “one animal” among many in the urban environment.

Shelley Alexander, a lead in the Candid Conservation Science Lab, made a study of human-wildlife confl ict, es-pecially wolves and coyotes, both in the fi eld and using a geographical information system (GIS). Sean Kheraj is co-editor at niche-canada.org of Nature’s Past: Canadian Environmental History Podcast. Susan Nance, who stud-ies entertainment, communication, performance, and historical animal life, is associated with animal welfare. For information you can go to: www.facebook.com/Cal-garyInstitute.

You can become a Parks volunteer and help take care of natural areas, off -leash areas, parks, green spaces, playgrounds, pathways, trees; conduct research; and provide park users with interpretive experiences. In-dividuals commit six shifts per season. For example at Nose Hill Park, you will greet visitors; off er information; present “biofacts”; lead interpretive activities; and pro-mote Parks programs.

If you are looking for a volunteer project for your com-pany or group, join the Parks Environmental Team on a green initiative project, such as invasive species (weed) pulls, painting projects, playground renewals, and more.

Volunteers of all backgrounds, abilities, and experience are invited to contribute. Once accepted, volunteers receive orientation, training, and support. To apply, call 311 or email: [email protected].

Don’t forget there will be public cleanups of Nose Hill on June 18 and July 30 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Meet at the Edgemont Parking lot (Edgemont Blvd. and Shaganappi Tr. NW) These are P.U.P.P.Y. events with Parks staff and volunteers who help park users pick up.
