Attention Juniors: $5,000 for Top Jr. in Fort Worth National Show

Funds have been committed to award $5,000 to the top placing ju-nior heifer and $2,500 to second place junior heifer (if funds permit) that is exhibited at the National Here-ford Show in Fort Worth. A second scholarship will be awarded if $5,000 is exceeded. Exhibitor must be at the halter of his/her own heifer as well as be eligible to show in the junior show the previous week. To be eli-gible for the junior show, the owner-ship must be in only the exhibitors’ name, no siblings or partners. See rule 12 on page 188 of the Fort Worth Stock Show premium book. The heif-er must be eligible to show for Grand Champion (no Cow/Calf). This is an incentive to encourage junior exhibi-tors to exhibit at the open show on February 2, 2015. To be eligible for the award, the exhibitor must enter the open show by the November 15th deadline. The exhibitor must be a member of the Texas Junior Hereford Association.

The sponsors of this award are committed to making this an an-nual event and hope to grow the fund to increase the prize as well as cre-ate a special belt buckle for the event. Anyone wishing to join this effort should contact Jack Chastain at the THA office. ★

6 TEXAS HEREFORD • November 2014

WOW! What an incredible month of sales we

have attended this past October. Look at the sale results of the production sales held this month in the reports listed elsewhere in this issue. Hereford cattle are really moving to the forefront at a rapid pace. It is very rewarding to hear comments from some of the buyers saying that they are buying Herefords because their Hereford sired calves are out performing

their calves sired by other breeds of bulls. They are talking both higher percent calf crop as well as heavier calves at weaning. THA members should be proud of the product you are producing but never rest as we need to continue to improve the seedstock we provide to the industry. I encourage more breeders to collect carcass information and provide it in a more useable manner. One example is providing ribeye area sizes without

giving weights, inches per 100 pounds or indexes. Another rewarding aspect of every sale was the presence of new buyers seeking Hereford genetics. Some had grown up with Herefords or used them years ago, but they all were seeking top end Hereford genetics because they thought Hereford bulls would add value to their calves.

I wish to single out and thank the participants in our fourth annual Fall Classic Sale in Buffalo. Our co-sponsor Buffalo Livestock, sale chairman Curtis Younts, consignors, buyers and everyone else that had a part made this year a huge success. This is an event for members of THA. We hope to grow this sale more and more each year. Please consider saving a top bull or female for next years event.

Consignments are coming in nicely for both the Cowtown Invitational Sale and the Hereford Replacement female sale, both to be held on Sunday, February 1, 2015. We again will have the Heritage pen of heifers (our fourteenth year). Every THA member is most grateful to the consignors of this pen as this event has been most beneficial to the budget of THA. We plan to provide the high placing junior heifer scholarship in the open show.

Another item of interest is that we plan to have a silent auction at our annual meeting and social and need a few quality items. If you have something to contribute, please notify myself or Gary Buchholz, president. Please do so early enough to allow us to prepare a presentation for it. The meeting will be Saturday, January 31, 2015 at the Botanical Gardens in Fort Worth.

I urge all members to stay in touch with the officers of this organization. We have a few new projects in place and plans for many more. We welcome ideas and suggestions from members as to what they would like this organization to be doing.

November is a month we should give thanks for the many blessings that have been bestowed upon us. We are truly blessed to work with Hereford cattle and the fine people associated with them. ★

H MS 5139 Advance 4007 ET• The Iron Lake program took another huge step forward with our recent addition

of 4007, the high selling Hereford female in the recent Hoffman Herefords sale. She is a big bodied, huge ribbed female that exhibits plenty of natural muscling. She is sired by 88X, who is fast becoming one of the most prolific sires of the modern Hereford era. She is out of the famous Holden 5139, the high selling female in the Hoffman Dispersal at $176,000 and is now serving as a donor at Sierra Ranches in California.

C Miles McKee 2103 ET• The legend of C Miles McKee, the current Denver Supreme Champion

Hereford, continues to grow as recently in the Colyer Herefords sale, several Miles McKee daughters commanded an average of $35,800. His flawless eye-appeal and structural correctness are what the foundation of the Iron Lake program is built on.

The Future Starts Now At Iron Lake Ranch

C Miles McKee 43270668 x HH MISS ADVANCE 6155SFour (4) IVF Frozen Embryos

• This mating is sure to be a Home Run. Sired by the current Denver Supreme Champion Hereford and record setting C Miles McKee and out of HH Miss Advance 6155S, who was the high selling female in the 2013 Holden Herefords Production Sale at $95,000. She is a full sister to the ever popular herd bull, 8050U, and in her own right has produced 11 bulls that have sold in the Holden sale for an average of over $32,000.

CRR 719 Catapult 109 x KCF Miss Proficient U201Four (4) Conventional Frozen #mbryos.

• Catapult blends muscle structure, power and maternal strengths with a performance set of data that puts him in the top 1% of the breed for WW, YW, and CHB$ Index while maintaining a low birth weight. Combine this with the added strengths of U201, who herself ranks in the top 1% of the breed for 9 measurable traits. She is the mother of Knoll Crest herd sire, X51. The progeny from this mating will offer many traits that the Hereford breed needs and what cattlemen of all walks desire: a huge spread from birth weight to yearling weight and big carcass numbers that put you at the top of the breed for CHB$ Index, all in an eye-appealing, structurally correct package with plenty of muscle.
