Dear Jack,I most wholeheartedly want to
thank you, the Executive Committee and Board of Directors of the Texas Hereford Association for choosing me as the Honoree of the 2016 National Hereford Show. I feel very honored and privileged to have been chosen.
I regret that I was unable to attend neither the meeting on January 30th nor the Stock Show. Due to a short-lived illness I did not feel well enough to get out, during the latter part of January. It was very disconcerting that I was unable to attend. I had been looking forward to the annual meet-ing and Stock Show for many weeks but sadly while the spirit was willing the flesh was weak. I’m sure you un-derstand.
Even though I was unable to at-tend the annual meeting, at the Bo-tanic Gardens, I saw pictures of the very well done display put together by you, Lyn and Lee. You did a great job.
Thank you and the Association for the very nice, well written article that was published in the January 2016 Texas Hereford journal.
The gifts the association bestowed on me, without exaggeration, were fantastic! The custom Henry rifle and stand, the two plaques, the Hereford bull statuette, the silver loving-cup and flower arrangement and the very nicely framed family photo. They will all be treasured by me and passed down through the family for genera-tions to come. Again, please express my sincere appreciation to the Execu-tive Committee and Board of Directors for the very special gifts they gave me.
My very special thanks to you and all of the hard work and tireless effort you put into making this event so special.
On a personal note, I feel your energy, effort and dedication to Texas Hereford Association has been exem-plary and has made the Association what is it today, one of the best indus-try associations in the country.
Best regards,James Walker

6 TEXAS HEREFORD • April 2016
tailgateTALK By Jack Chastain, Editor
What an exciting time to be in the cattle business with Hereford
cattle. I am proud to see sale reports from all over the nation listing breeders from Texas as their top buyers. This can only expand and improve the genetics our Texas breeders make available to the industry.
THA has been very active this past month promoting THA and Herefords with a presence in the International
Room at the Houston Livestock Show, supporting the World Black Hereford Association, sponsoring part of the ABBA sale in Caldwell, sharing a booth with both TPHA and CHB at the TSCRA Convention as well as sponsoring a youth leadership workshop at the TSCRA convention. All were huge successes and THA should be proud of our involvement.
We have begun work on the 2016
annual membership directory. Every member will be mailed a herd listing form and ad reservation form. Please update your listing. I cannot stress enough how important it is that current members provide us with correct and complete information regarding phone numbers, e-mail addresses, directions to your ranch and herd information. We especially want to update those of you who have developed ranch web sites and can include you with a link from our web site.
Now is the time to select and hold a bull or group of bulls for our Fall Classic sale in Buffalo on October 19. We are also trying to build a female sale with this sale. We will accept both registered and commercial Herefords as well as other breeds and crosses.
Now is also a good time to select and breed a pen of heifers for our 48th annual replacement heifer show and sale to be held in Fort Worth on Sunday, January 29, 2017. Plan to select at least one or two extra to make sure you can get the minimum of ten for the pen show. We plan to have another heritage pen of cattle. Now is also a good time to select an entry for the annual Cowtown Invitational Sale. THA through some generous sponsors has encouraged our junior exhibitors to enter the open show by providing a cash award in the form of a scholarship. I solicit a few more donors as well as all junior exhibitors to consider bringing their heifers to the National Show in Fort Worth. The junior must be present and be at the halter of his or her own animal to be eligible for the $5000 high and $2500 second high placing heifers and more if funds are contributed.
Our juniors are busy preparing for another great state show and field day held jointly with TJPHA. The event will be held June 14-18 in Belton. As an advisor I can safely say that this event could not happen without the support of the Hereford breeders around the entire state. I encourage all members to respond favorably with both monetary and volunteer help. All THA members could benefit from watching our youth in action.
Hereford demand is as strong as ever and now is as good a time as ever to promote your herd with an ad in our publication. Remember “Advertising does not COST--IT PAYS!” ★

Advantages of THA Membership
SERVICE – The Texas Hereford Association is a service organization to benefi t the Here-ford breed and the breeder. Members are assisted in buying and selling cattle at private treaty and by auc-tion. The Texas Hereford Association spon-sors the Commercial Hereford Heifer Show and Sale and the Cowtown Select Sale and the THA Fall Classic. These sales promote the use of better Hereford bulls and females. The Texas Hereford Association is also ac-tively engaged in the promotion of Texas Herefords and in sponsoring seminars, fi eld days, and other events to encourage educa-tional opportunities for members.
ASSOCIATION – The Texas Hereford As-sociation was organized in 1899. Its mem-bership has included the elite of the Texas Hereford industry since its inception. Mem-bership dues are $125.00 per year . Associate memberships are available for $100.00 per year.
DIRECTORY ISSUE – Every active member of the Texas Hereford Association has a free listing in the Directory issue of The Texas Hereford. This Directory is used by thou-sands of Hereford breeders the year round. Information pertaining to your herd such as herd sires, bloodlines, location of farm or ranch, telephone numbers, etc., will be list-ed in this widely used reference book. This herd listing alone is worth the price of mem-bership. Associate members are also listed.
THE TEXAS HEREFORD – Monthly pub-lication of the Texas Hereford Association. It is the only publication in Texas devoted solely to Herefords. It includes news about the association, news about Herefords and timely editorial features. Active members can list Herefords for sale FREE in the Cat-tle For Sale column. This service has been responsible for selling thousands of Texas Herefords all over the nation. Texas Her-eford Association members may advertise in The Texas Hereford at low livestock rates – a considerable savings for your marketing pro-gram. Sale catalogs, brochures, fl yers, and other marketing aids designed are produced by our professional staff at considerable savings. (Advertising rates will be sent on request).
