As we head into the hurricane

season, we begin to prepare for

storms and potential loss of

power, utilities and our regular

conveniences. The same

should be done in our practices

during the summer time dol-

drums. This is a great time to prepare yourself and

your staff for the possible slower times ahead.

Here are some tips that may serve to be helpful.

Regular staff meetings: Having regular

meetings with your staff is not always for

them. They keep you on track with the

things that are important in your practice.

You can reinforce office policies in case of a

hurricane, regular office policies, scheduling

strategies, insurance policies, PIP law

changes (that should keep you busy),

questions patients have for the staff and

how to respond, marketing events, and

philosophy. This is a great time to see what

your staff knows about what you do.

Discussing positive cases can be profound

to staff that otherwise may not see the

direct results you see day to day.

Taking time off: We all need time to stop

and sharpen the blade. A dull blade takes

longer to cut and is hazardous. Taking time

to get your mind and body healthy for the

demands of practice is essential in any

profession, especially ours. Find the time of

year where it is has been the slowest, and

take that week or so off. “Disconnecting”

from work is mentally and emotionally

healthy. Patients often dump their health

“baggage” on us as physicians, regardless

of whether you can help them or not. You

need to time to refresh and recharge. I have

found that over the years this practice does

not come as a loss of revenue but a

fountain of youth and inspiration for my

body and mind.

Educate yourself: Take the time to read

books, read journals, or take new classes.

Find one good educational seminar that you

would enjoy attending. Patients count on us

for the most up to date information on

THEIR health. They expect us to do that in

our down time. Share with your patients the

things that you are learning. They

appreciate the fact that you take the time to

learn. Don’t just get your basic require-

ments. The FCA is filled with great speakers

and the latest information on what is

relevant in our field. The National

Convention and Expo is August 22-25 at the

Peabody Orlando.

Have a great summer. Be safe. Get refreshed,

recharged and rejuvenated! See you at our next

meeting.
