PRESIDENTS REPORT

As 2016 draws to a close, I look back on an veryenjoyable season of shooting steel. We went to a lotof matches and met a lot of shooters. I'd like to thankall the match directors who’s effort made thosematches possible. Without their dedication to thissport, we would not have places to shoot. Onehighlight this season was the filming of the WorldChampionships in OKC this July. It has and will airagain on Shooting USA (episode 3515) on theoutdoor channel. Another highlight was seeing morejunior shooters at matches than in prior years. Weneed to encourage juniors as that is the future of thesport. The new Freedom Arm challenge was verypopular this year. If anyone hasn't sent in their scoresyet, get them in before the end of the year. We as an organization are in better financialshape than a year ago. The 2016 WorldChampionships in OKC showed a nice profit. Alsogoing to an annual membership renewal with a lowermembership rate has seen us get many membersback into the fold. I've talked many past memberswho have rejoined the sport once again. Is thereroom for improvement, yes there is. The board isdedicated to improving the newsletter, both theregularly of it and the content. We have newnewsletter staff starting next year. Also we areworking on a new match program that will work onmore computers and will include the new categories. It will have a match writeup feature that will makeeasier for match directories to get the match resultsinto the newsletter staff in a format that can be easilypublished. A reminder this year is that everyone'smembership dues are due Jan. 1, 2017. Please getthem no later than the end of January so you can beincluded in the mass mailing of the Annual printednewsletter which includes match dates and locationsfor 2017. You will receive your membership cardand annual printed newsletter in mid March. Themore members we can include in the mass mailingsaves our organization money and keeps the dueslow. A look forward to 2017 includes the WorldChampionships in OKC. This will the 41st annualevent and it is a great place to shoot. If you nevermade it to the Oklahoma gun club make your plansnow as you'll enjoy the match and the people whohost it.Shoot Steel

THE NEW SILHOUETTERWhat's New?By Ken Horowitz

There is an often used misquote that "Everything that can beinvented has been invented" erroneously attributed to CharlesHolland Duell in his capacity as Commissioner of the UnitedStates Patent and Trademark Office during 1898 to 1901. UntilI further researched the matter, I was as guilty as anyone else.Duell's thinking was apparently the opposite of this in that hepurportedly really said something like: "In my opinion, allprevious advances in the various lines of invention will appeartotally insignificant when compared with those which thepresent century will witness. I almost wish that I might live mylife over again to see the wonders which are at the threshold."(Whatever happened to flowery speech like that?)One proposed source of origin of the above misquoteerroneously attributed to Duell may come from HenryEllsworth, a much earlier Commissioner of the United StatesPatent and Trademark Office in 1843. Ellsworth purportedlysaid: "The advancement of the arts, from year to year, taxes ourcredulity and seems to presage the arrival of that period whenhuman improvement must end."Over the course of existence of firearms and ammunition as weknow them the above two contradictory views could easily bemuttered by their proponents. Once the self-contained cartridgecame into existence and improved during the first half of the19th Century, things moved rapidly. By the time the late 19th -early 20th Century rolled around, we had single shots, breakopen actions, lever guns, bolt actions, semi-automatic and fullautomatic actions. Smokeless powder had bumped blackpowder from its monopolistic position. Beyond improvementsin materials and manufacturing techniques (includingtolerances) we haven't moved very much despite advertising andpromotional hype. The actions are pretty much the same andthe firearm goes "bang" after the firing pin hits the primercausing it to ignite the powder and the expanding gasses hurlthe bullet through and out the barrel. On the other hand, improvements to manufacturing haveenabled mass production of quality products. When I attendedQuality College on behalf of my employer some 20+ years ago,the definition of quality (after an exhausting study anddiscussion of various viewpoints) came down to "conformity torequirements." Today, any one of us can, subject to ourpocketbook and aesthetic appetite, purchase mass producedfirearms that will get the job done. On the one hand, I wouldargue that they haven't changed much; on the other hand, thequality and availability are better than ever and have continuedto get so. Chalk up one point each for Duell and Ellsworth. As far as cartridges are concerned, they look pretty much thesame as they did back in the 19th Century. There is still a brasscase (or other material such as aluminum, steel or plastic), aload of propellant, a primer and a bullet. Despite the myriad ofchamberings and bullets, there is hardly a task performed todaythat couldn't be accomplished by the offerings of a hundredyears ago. Back them, big game, dangerous game and varmintswere all biting the dust with the fodder at hand; LE was stillcapturing the bad guys; people were defending themselves; war

was being raged with catastrophic bloodshed; target shooterswere performing amazing gunmanship.Once again, if anything has improved, it's the quality andefficiency of manufacturing. Cases are more consistent, bulletsymmetry and construction are amazing, powders and primersare more consistent and cleaner burning. Plus, even afterabsorbing the increases in price over the past few years due tothe shortage, in today's dollars, ammunition and components aremarkedly less expensive than they were "back in the day." Forexample, that 90¢ that I paid for a box of low-end high velocity22LR ammunition when I started shooting as a teenager wouldset me back $6.95 today, adjusted for inflation; that $3.50 boxof shotshells would go for $27.01 today.Variety is always nice but claiming to have found somethingnew and innovative is a bit disingenuous when it comes to mostofferings these days. It's akin to the latest food fads; mixingdifferent ingredients wouldn't give anyone the right to claiminvention of sustenance. Neither does shortening or lengtheninga cartridge case; changing shoulder angle; reducing orincreasing bullet diameter; okay, you get the point.I didn't invent the wheel, discover fire, or develop reloading. All of that has been done before and I'm happy to follow othersand take advantage of what has been done already. You willnot see a 17-50 Horowitz with a tiny bullet in the necked downmouth of a 50 BMG. Besides sounding dangerous and apt toexplode, it would serve no purpose other than self-aggrandizement, certainly not my bag. Some cartridge developments do have more merit than others. On the lower side, I would put all of those "better deercartridges." There are so many cartridges that will effectivelyharvest deer and there no such thing as "deader." They eitherwork or not if the shot is properly placed and bigger, faster, flatter don't make up for improper shot placement. On the other hand, in our own sporting sub-segment, the needfor a sufficiently weighted bullet that would be flat enough totopple our Big Bore steel targets without unduly beating up theshooter with recoil spawned a group of cartridges that truly didfill a void. Various somewhat concurrent efforts led todevelopment of several cartridges, all of which do an adequatejob. While my favorites are the 7mm BR and 7mm TCU, I'd behard pressed to argue that any of the others wouldn't do as well.Even between my two favorites, either will do. I like each forwhat I would consider subjective reasons and if the other hadnever been developed I imagine I could be just as happy. We all have our likes and dislikes. These need not necessarilybe founded on anything more than a whim. But beingforthright, no one needs to claim that something is better if infact it is just simply different. From my perspective, for sometime now there has been sufficient variety of cartridges; yet, Iwelcome anything additional that makes a sport shooter happy.I guess I can be in both the Duell and Ellsworth camps at thesame time.

Entries have been slight slower this fall, and as some of you know, I’ve been splitting my time betweenmy home base in SoCal (with my computer) and our homerenovation in Aberdeen, Washington (with my phone and wifihotspot). Needless to say, I’ve not been as Jimmy-on-the-spotas my previous slacker contributions.

Here’s an update prior to the year-end wrap-up that should bepublished in the Jan-Feb 2017 period, where scores andparticipation will determine the Person of the Year, and therunner’s up and other pageant champions.

Notably strong in both ½ Scale and 1/5 Scale scoped categoriesis Steve Soya from Michigan. Even on his abbreviated shootingseason, he’s managed to dominate both arms of thecompetition. Val Shaver of Nevada is a strong second place inboth these fields.

Special note to Harry Sharp, Jerry JR Ray with their ½ Scaleopen sight 60x60’s from the WCC at Grants Pass, Oregon, andEric King for his ½ Scale open sight 40x40.

Congrats to Steve Martens (our Prez!) for his terrificperformance at the East Coast Championship 60-round match.Steve took the championships in all ½ Scale and 1/5 Scaleevents, including both Aggregates! Steve’s scores qualified asrecords in the ½ Scale program for ½ UAS and the ½ Agg.

Shoot well, shoot safe! See you next year for another round oflong range accuracy and nerves!

Happy holidays!

500 Meter News by the Old Guy

Since IHMSA agreed to sanction some 500 meter silhouetteshooting, a number of people have begun shooting the longerranges who had not done so before. Among them is Gary Crewsof Oklahoma who shoots the 500 meter course of fire at theOklahoma City range with Jim Fields.

Right from the start Gary made it clear he was going to be goodat this. He won the Iron Sights Unlimited category at the 2016World Championships back in July with a 37x40. This is aseriously good score.Over the thirty-five years people have been shooting the riflecourse of fire with handguns, only a handful of shooters haveshot 37x40. This was the first time since IHMSA sanctioned500 meter silhouette shooting that anyone had shot 37x40, so itbecame the IHMSA record. This score wasshot 9 chickens, 9 pigs, 9 turkeys, and 10 rams.

Only a month later Gary was back at the Oklahoma City range, and this time he shot 38x40. Wow! That is outstanding. This isthe new IHMSA 500 meter Iron Sights record. Prior to IHMSAsanction only three people had shot 38x40, and no one ever hasshot a 40x40. The three others who shot 38x40 had beenshooting 500 meter silhouette not just for years and years but

decades. Gary really has put the word out that he is the one tobeat at any 500 meter match he attends.

It also is worth noting that Gary shot the 38x40 with 10chickens, 10 pigs, 10 turkeys, and 8 rams. This means that onseparate occasions he has had 10 in a row of each animal. Thismade him eligible for the Iron Sights 500 Meter Grand Slam pinwhich the Old Guy mailed off to him right away. It is furtherworth noting that the eight others who have earned this 500Meter Iron Sights Grand Slam pin over the years spent yearsand years working toward it. Gary did it within a month.

There also is a 500 meter pin for a 40x40 scoped. If you areeligible for either one, please get in touch with me, and I willget it off to you. You can email me at: [email protected]

In other 500 meter news Harry Sharp shot a very nice 36x40Iron Sights Unlimited in October at the Avenal, Californiarange. This was on a windy day, and Harry did a great job ofreading the wind.

On the other hand, does anyone remember a day of 500 metershooting when the wind did not blow? Actually I do. It was theday in Yuma, Arizona when Ted Zysk shot the legendary 30x40in Iron Sights 500 meter half size. In his day Ted was the kingof Iron Sights 500 meter shooting. He held both the Revolverand the Half Size records. May his soul rest in peace.

Left the Range, Dave Whitman,IHMSA# 19L

IHMSA has lost one of its pioneers, DaveWhitman, IHMSA #19L. Dave’s request wasthat there be no memorial service. This requesthas been honored. However, the JosephineCounty Sportsman Association’s PistolSilhouette Club felt that some lasting monumentbe placed for future shooters to know him andhis accomplishments. Thus, this plaque has beenplaced in the JCSA main office.

IHMSA Match NewsBy Dan Hagerty

There will be some Changes coming this next year. Firstand foremost, I will be resigning as the News editor andwe already Have a new editor in training. When he isready to take over, we will let you know.

To make the Job easier for the new editor, We need tomake some changes to how Match reports are beingsubmitted. When the match Director submits his Reportsto HQ either digitally or by paper work, The match reportsneed to have the following information:

1. City and state nearest Match2. Club Name3. Date(s) of match4. Name of person submitting article5. Region for club (this is recommended but not

required)

Without this information, your match reports will not beprinted in the IHMSA News. As I have learned I getaround 40-50 Match reports each month and without thisinformation, It makes it very Hard to process properly thereports. If sending your reports digitally, Please send themas a document or PDF file. Please no excel spreadsheets orClub newsletters!

As some people may have noticed, the Match forms are nolonger printed on colored paper. The main reason for thisis that Scanners have a hard time Identifying text on theform when it is on colored paper. There is also a small costsavings but not much. Also, if anybody does not mindprinting out their own forms, Please email me and I willforward you digital copies of the forms.

I will still be doing the Match functions for HQ, So Pleasestill send your Match reports, Match Recaps and sanctionfees to me. If you try to contact me via phone, The phonenumber listed is my personal Cell phone. I do not carrythis phone mainly due to I work in the in-home serviceindustry and I know you would not like your service techanswering personal phone calls while working in yourhouse. So, Please leave me a voicemail and I will get backto you.

2017 is just around the corner and it is time for Clubs tosubmit their new match schedules. Included on thisnewsletter is a copy of the 2017 Match schedule inputform. I will be emailing a copy to all Match directors that Ihave information for but I included in the news for matchdirectors I do not have information for. Please make sureyour state or regional director approves your match

schedule. The Director can electronically sign the schedulewhen sending via email by stating that he approves theschedule in the email.

The match reports will get caught up in January. To getthis newsletter out, They were Not included.

Have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

LOUISIANA DIRECTORS REPORT

The 2016 IHMSA season in Louisiana was concludedlast weekend, and I want to personally thank my brother,Charlie Braud, for personally keeping IHMSA alive inLouisiana. Charlie is personally running 3 IHMSAmatches, with little or no help. Our membership andparticipation have dwindled to almost nothing, but we aredetermined to keep IHMSA alive here in Louisiana. Toease the workload at these matches we are planning toinstitute some fairly radical changes. With inspiration fromDave Nuetzel and the shooters in Pensacola, FL, we planto start using "ringer" targets with impact sensors. Thesesensors will trigger a LED lamp when the target is hit, andwill reset after about 10 seconds. This way, we can spareour aging bodies the strain of many trips downrange topick up steel. We realize that with this system we will losewhat, to most shooters, is the initial appeal of metallicsilhouette shooting - seeing the targets fall ! But, with ourcurrent situation we are left with no better option. Charlieplans to use this system at all matches in Louisiana. Ourcousin Lanny Blake is helping with the electronic side ofthis project. Charlie tested the prototype the other day andsaid that it worked perfectly. Hopefully, whenimplemented, this system will remove the heavy labor thatwe have had to endure at our matches. We would haveloved to go with auto-reset targets, but 2 of the ranges inuse will not allow any permanent installation of targetsystems. The price and mobility of these systems makethem impractical as well. If your travels bring you toLouisiana, we would love to have you join us at a match. We look forward to a better 2017 ! ---- Philip BraudIHMSA #13794 Louisiana Director

Match Report2016 South Central Regional Championship

Sept. 30, Oct. 1-2Jim Fields, Match Director

OKC Gun ClubUnbelievable was the only way to describe this match, anyone missing this one missed some great weather,

great times with special friends as well as some great food & excellent shooting conditions all three days which couldonly be described as bluebird weather from Thursday thru Sunday.

We had a total of 157 entries for this match, down a little from last year but not bad considering we had 5 or sixof our regulars missing for one reason or other. Would have easily been over 200 entries.

We had shooters not only from Oklahoma but also from Minnesota, Kansas, Missouri & Texas, all had a greattime shooting steel, telling lies, making excuses for missing targets; I think I even picked up a few new excusesmyself. We appreciate all our out-of-state shooters.

We had a total of twenty-nine (29) 60x60's shot in this match, so all had a great time in the shoot-offs.Those shooting 60x60's in this match were Steve Martens (4) Scott Thompson (4) Jim Fields (3) Josh Delso (3)

John Blue (3) Gary Crews (2) Joe Coleman (2) Jack Tessman (2) Jim Meyers (1) Josh Grounds (1) Ryan Schuff (1)John Weaver (1) Teresa Coleman (1) Larry Curts (1)

Four gun BB went to John Weaver, TX with a 220x240 & 4-gun SB was won by Steve Martens, 221x240.Steve Martens from Minnesota won the 500 meter scope with a 38x40, & also the open sight with a 33x40 great

shooting Steve.Linda Lanning from Kansas won high lady in UAS-BB with (58x60) Teresa Coleman, won high lady UAS SB with

a UAS-60x60, great shooting gals.Scott Thompson won the Iron Man award with an eight gun total of 409x480.Our high junior in UAS-SB was Josh Grounds, one of our target setters, shot a fine 60x60+5, great shooting

Josh; Ryan Schuff won high junior in UAS-BB 8i UASFS, & Keldon Friesen 8 years old, a brand new junior shooterfrom Hinton, OK, shot a 58x60 in practical hunter class with a brand new Charger, for high junior, great shootingKeldon. His Older brother Daylan, 10 years old, shot a 59x60 in his first match also, howvever Daylan was notclassified yet, fantastic score for his first match ever. Their dad, Larry was a very proud papa indeed. This is whatour sport is all about.

Lever gun short range went to Rick Escott & the .22 category went to Dan Zimmerman. We had a tremendous amount of door prizes we gave away. I think everyone in attendance won at least

one.Our big raffle was for a Dillon RL-550 progressive press which was won by Josh Delso, congratulations Josh; the

Shilen barrel certificate was won by Robin Weaver, John's other half, go gal.I want to thank some of the companies who donated prizes or gift certificates for this match, Sierra Bullets,

Cabelas, Shilen Barrels, Midway, Champion Shooters Supply, Hornady Bullets, Starline Brass.Again, our target setters did an excellent job of keeping the match moving smoothly & the office personnel & line

crew did an excellent job as well as John & AJ Richards taking care of the AIR gun part of this match, you guys aregreatly appreciated. Also would like to thank Debbie Tessman, Teresa & Joe Coleman who did the food preparationall three days. We had an excellent cook-out Saturday evening.

See all the match results accompanying this article. That about sums it up for now, shoot straight, shoot safe, & the good lord willing, I'll see you at the next match.
