Since we just completed our season’s premier event – the Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix,

you might think that our Porsche season is almost over. This is not the case. In fact we are just about at our half-way point as far as activities are concerned.

We just had two events – on the same day. We had another successful Auto X and I can’t thank the two instigators – Rob Hoffman and Scott Mores for pulling off another successful track event. What many of you might not know is that Rob and Scott have initiated and rejuvenated our participation with Auto X events without either of them ever experiencing an Auto X themselves.

After the event many of the participants joined others for our second annual Sushi and Speed event at Roboyko. Doing the chair honors were Paul Nickoloff with his lovely bride Diane. This is my favorite type of ARPCA event. Why – because all you have to do is drive to the restaurant, park your Porsche and meet with fellow Porschephiles --- and maybe have some great food and a few beverages.

Like last year, the event was supposed to end at 4:00pm, but like us many to not get home until after 8:00pm. Since this function was held in Greensburg we got to see many members from the East side that doesn’t attend other events. I hope that with the conversations and stories that were conveyed that we will see more of these members.

Speaking of Paul – as our Advertising Guru, he has done a dynamite job of increasing our advertising revenues. Lately he has contacted over 100 potential advertisers. We as a club can assist by using those organizations who advertise with us plus contacting those personal contacts that you know who could be potential advertisers.

Sewickley Car Store was kind enough to invite Louise and I (plus many others) to the introduction of the new Boxster. Porsche has done a fantastic job of upgrading this model and I’m sure that we will be seeing a

number of them at our events. The highlight for me was that my leg was giving me trouble so I had to find a place to rest and went and found a chair in the showroom lounge. Soon I was joined by Scott Ishler and Earl Seiler. Shortly thereafter, Bob Nichol – owner of SCS asked if he could join us – what am I suppose to say. He was more than welcomed to our little session and then our ladies – Mary Lee, Judi and Louise also sat down for our small get together. We kind of started out with a question to Bob on how he began his career in the automobile industry. We ended up listing to some fascinating stories about his early career, the founding of SCS and his racing career. We were in our little group for over an hour and we could have listened longer but the dealership was trying to close the store. Thanks Bob for you attention and your stories.

We are intensifying our efforts with our P3 program (Porsche Projects for Patriots) so if you know someone serving with our armed forces in Iraq or Afghanistan, please contact Judi Seiler with this information.

Again we had a great business meeting at SWS and a surprising turnout seeing as how the evening was the first Steelers pre-season game. Many new faces, which are really appreciated.

At our meeting, we decided not to do our Nemacolin event. Last year we had a much smaller than usual turnout and lost money of the event, so we decided to skip a year and will probably resume it again next year.

I want to thank Duane Smith for his great technical articles. Many of you have requested this column and Duane has certainly delivered.

A few hugs, some high-fives, lots of waves and even some pecks, it

must be time for the Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix!

This year’s PVGP was a much smaller version than last year’s celebration

but that was certainly okay with me. Our dining room just doesn’t look

like it’s July – no crates of registration packets, no boxes of programs,

envelopes, stacks of welcome letters. Something certainly is different

this year. It’s almost like we aren’t chair the Grand Prix.

Ken hasn’t been working feverously on his spread sheet after a daily

trip to the mailbox to heft the latest registration envelopes with checks

enclosed. He has lost all interest in the daily mail! What could have

changed our July lives so drastically? It’s all because of Motorsport Reg!

Along with the new registration process, we decided to have our

caterer Michael of Tambellini’s take on more responsibilities. He bought

all the soft drinks, water, and cookies with the $1500 Giant Eagle gift

cards that Randy Evans of Goosebumps was able to secure from Giant

Eagle. There was even money left over that we can use for other club

events. Michael also provided the ice. Now this doesn’t seem like much

but believe me, not having to worry about schlepping the drinks, ice,

and cookies was heaven.

In April Dale Rabeneck set up our Grand Prix registration on line using

Motorsport Reg as his model. Since our DEs have used this registration

format for several years, we felt certain it would help streamline the

PVGP tedious process but I had NO idea it would be this easy.

We had a stuffing party on Thursday evening before the Grand Prix

with about 6 volunteers. Dale had printed out the latest registration

list which was color-coded to identify Concourse Cars, we created piles

of printed material to be included along with door prize tickets and

lunch wrist bands and we were off walking around the dining table and

filling our packets. Oh, did I mention that the list was alphabetized?

That little bit of news saved oodles of time trying to get the packets in

order as they were filled. We were finished in record time and rewarded

ourselves with pizza and beer!

I can’t thank Dale and the volunteers enough for making the PVGP

nothing more than an enjoyable evening with friends, no rush, no

sweat, no problem.

whatever. That seems to be a lost cause. I’m going to begin interviewing

sorry, it’s a great place! Also upcoming is our Fall Rally, put together by

Fast Frank. This Rally is a “Modified” Poker Run!! We start at the old STAR

Theater in Bridgeville (I-79, Exit 54). First car off at 10:00, so get there

about 9:30 or so. By the way, we could use a few volunteers to assist this

Fourth Gear, Fifth Gear, I’m ‘outta here!

Iron Jack and I, your co-editors, are looking for some articles from you.

What did you think about your first or any track, autocross, rally, social

event or PVGP? We would like to publish your article and perhaps you

will get someone interested to try one of these events and get involved.

If you like, we could interview you about your experiences and then

publish the interview.

We just finished organizing the the final route for this fall rally and Poker

Run. It will begin in Bridgeville and end at a restaurant on October 6. See

the September edition of the RUNDSCHAU for times and directions to

the starting point. For those of you who do not know what a Poker Rally

is---you and your navigator will receive a playing card at the beginning

of the rally, three at different location during the rally, and one final

one at the end of the rally. The best Poker hand at the end will be the

winner. Ties will be broken with the number of correct answers to the

questions and the right mileage. At the end of the rally we will end up

at a restaurant for fine food , tall tales, and many excuses. There will be a

five dollar donation per car that benefits the P3 program. Hope you can

join us for a few hours of fun and enjoyment.

Meet the New Boxster… Same as the old Boxster?

Two words… absofrigginlutely not! First off, thanks to the greatest rock band of all time for allowing adaptation of their lyrics for article title (posed now as a question) and theme (sans politics).

First, a little history... The inaugural 1997 Porsche Boxster was released with an impressive (at the time) 201 hp. In name, Boxster is derived by combining boxer (the flat 6 motor design) and roadster (an automobile with an open body that seats two and has a folding fabric top and often a luggage compartment - thanks Merriam). As the first Porsche designed strictly as a roadster since iconic 550 Spyder, the Boxster was

also Porsche’s first foray into water cooled non-front engine vehicles (proving air conditioning can work on a Porsche not in motion). The 986 (Boxster 1.0) shared many parts with its big brother even though 996s were not introduced until MY 1998. Much credit for saving Porsche in the 1990s is given to the Boxster. Not only revolutionizing a company it did so likewise to an entire auto industry segment.

Driving a 986 Boxster is nothing short of fun. Its mid mounted engine, near perfect 50/50 weight distribution makes for an extremely “toss-able” yet forgiving vehicle. Solid power, great cornering dynamics and awesome braking all thanks to Porsche’s fantastic racing heritage make driving it one heck of a blast – let alone doing so top down. Three years into production, it received a bump to 217hp with a 2.7L motor and the Boxster S was introduced with a 3.2L.

In 2005, a model refresh heralded in 987s and another bump to 237hp while the S was boosted to 276hp. It also received a permanent hardtop (though Porsche named the fixed roof Boxster a Cayman… and charged a premium for losing the drop top and providing a slight increase in hp). 987s more importantly began the aesthetic differentiation from big brother (aside from an ’02 headlight/fender/bumper refresh on 996s). MY 2007 brought hp boosts for all 4 Boxster variants (Boxster, Boxster S, Cayman and CaymanS) but S models especially with a new 3.4L powerplant. Other than mostly behind the scenes technological improvement, bumps in hp, a new motor and fantastic 7speed PDK

transmission introduced in 2009 (with 987.2), the Boxster, now a teenager, has essentially been the same great vehicle as introduced in 1997.

Enough history...

After much anticipation, late June this year marked arrival of Boxster 3.0 (aka 981) in the US. Yours truly has been fortunate enough to meet and drive the new Boxster while attending launch parties at both local dealers. What can I say, like a dog drooling over liver treats I’m easily bribed with new cars, free food and drinks – thanks Sewickley and Auto Palace! In short, Boxster 3.0, like 1.0, is a new revolution not only to a brand but to an industry segment again.

One of Pete’s messages in the song epitomizing political uprisings

was “Don’t expect to see what you expect to see” [Townshend – in case you don’t know great music]. This statement could not be more apropos in describing the new 981. Take it a step further here and all I can say is expect to see what you don’t expect to see.

Non-technically speaking, Boxster 3.0 hit the gym hard. Not only shedding pounds but building muscle as torsional rigidity is apparently increased 40% (via a new chassis). Wheelbase extends a couple of inches also enabling front and rear tracks to expand a little over 2 inches and almost ¾ inch, respectively. Models comes dressed with 18 inch wheels standard (in 1997 16’s were protocol) while providing OEM options for 19 and even 20 inch shoes! The 265hp propels it from 0-60MPH in 5.5 seconds while the S model 315hp power-plant accomplishes same task in a sub-5 4.8 seconds. How does it drive? Fantastic!! It’s more powerful and nimble than 1.0 but my private test track [cough]Bigelow Blvd.[cough] prevented me from more elaborating testing.

Impressive technical improvements aside (and there are many many

many many many more), the 981 is equally impressive visually… inside and out. Styling cues borrowed from the Carrera GT don’t end with the front headlights. Side intakes are reminiscent too with beautifully sculpted passenger compartment door skin recesses flowing exquisitely to rear quarter panels. On paper, rear spoiler integration across the entire hind quarters even thru tail lights looks a bit Mitsubishi Eclipse-esque. In real time it looks suhweeet! The interior has absolutely top notch fit and finish like the exterior. It also incorporates the typical upward sloping center console so commonly found in modern day Porsches completing the cockpit feel. Initially it elicits Ouija Board skepticism when viewing the myriad of buttons. A few minutes getting to know them provides more than adequate solace though. Certainly one becomes easily comfortable in short order knowing your eyes need not leave the road while tactically adjusting temp, PSE Stereo, or perhaps reaching for the Sport Plus mode fun button!!!

Bottom line… those who purchased previous Boxsters were certainly no fools (hidden song reference) because both 986s and 987s (and 987C) having proven to be nothing short of fantastically capable vehicles to wear Porsche badges. Anyone who purchases a 981, a la Boxster 3.0, will welcome the new revolution with countless smiles ear to ear. Is it enough to make me want to get my motor out of my a _ _ and back to the middle? Well, I certainly wouldn’t turn one down if given to me… I’ll stand pat for now because the slush funds don’t match up to the $85k model I virtually put together on Porsche.com’s configurator. That said, a certain co-pilot I know can’t wait to see the 981C… even hinting it make the short list as a suitable replacement for her current chariot – aka “the white car over there”.

Don’t believe it’s that good? It is! Want further proof? See the August 2012 issue of Roundel (BMW’s attempt at Panorama) which admits defeat [again] to our beloved Boxster. It sights Automobile magazine’s Aug 2012 showdown between the Boxster S, Z4 clown shoe, and SLK55 AMG.

The next time on of our local dealers throws a launch party, you should attend because exciting things are definitely happening with Porsche. There are a slew of new things in the works which will surely catch your eye if not your wallet.

So, January kicked off revolution 1 of 2012 with the new 911/991. Revolution 2 has been decisively marked with the 981’s introduction. Maybe we’ll be lucky enough to get a more important 3rd revolution this November. I’m talking about previews of the 981C… right Pete?

SPEED AND SUSHI By Rob Hoffman, Photos by Cindy Monyok

This year it was really more like “Speed and Sushi.” With the second AX of the 2012 season taking place at the Greensburg/Jeannette Airport and a social at Roboyko, August 11 was a Porsche filled day.

Although, a bit windy, overcast, and chilly at the airport, we had a 23 participants overall and many spectators. The “Speed” part of the day started about 2 hours earlier than a typical autocross does, so that we had plenty of time to meet with our non-racing friends at Roboyko. Registration opened at 7 a.m. and the AX at the airport was underway a little after 8.

Scott Mores and Trevor Hill designed the technical course the night before. Each driver ran 2 sessions with 4 runs in each. The course included slaloms, sweeps, gates, and a twist at the end that made the course very challenging. Trevor Hill took several participants on an “instructional ride” to get more acquainted with the course at speed.

Rabeneck in second, and Scott Mores in third. After the event and a few fun runs we made our way to Roboyko for the “Sushi” part of the event.

Roboyko’s lot was full of P-Cars, when the AX’ers arrived. It was a great site to see. Many of the new faces from the autocross attended and mixed with the crowd. Overall there were more than 20 cars in the lot and as usual the food was great, the beer was cold, and the crowd was friends. No better way to spend a Saturday…

THE ONGOING SAGA OF THE TURBO By Rob Hoffman

On every road trip (usually only to Ohio) that we take, Scott and I expect something to go wrong. Usually nothing does, but we always have Paul, Dale or Scott “The Ish” on alert as we may need someone to post bail at some point. This trip to Ohio was no different, we were full on expecting to go to jail and we actually almost did this time.

After picking up the fender from the guy I bought it from in Versailles, Ohio we tried to make our way back into town for lunch. Only problem was we couldn’t get back there. Every road into town was closed for construction. Part of me wonders, as that town was so small, did they know we were outsiders and shut down their town so we couldn’t get back into it? Nah… Trying to find our way we passed a police car with an officer inside who gave us a very strange stare, almost like “who are these two idiots?” Maybe he thought we were beautiful, maybe he thought we were two famous guys in an exotic red Honda Civic with a

sunroof, maybe this town was just so small the locals didn’t know who we were… I digress…

We carried on, fender packed in, radio on, roof open. It was a beautiful day. The GPS directed us to Highway 31. Sixty more miles of flat cornfield bliss and as the boredom began to overtake us as we noticed that the road ahead was a few miles of valleys and dips. We figured with enough speed we might be able to catch a little air in the Nine Ereven. (that’s what we call my 2008 Honda Civic EX as it has been an honorary Porsche this summer.) Now Scott has never been behind the wheel of this performance machine. It’s tricky to drive with all of its 140 horsepower and front wheel drive. You’ve got to have a firm hand to shift it from second to third as you might be traveling at the lighting fast speed of 45.

With all that power, we started to “lift” the exotic machine that is my red Civic on Highway 31. We figured if Scott pushed it just a few miles per hour more we would no doubt catch air. Instead of watching the cop coming towards us, we were too busy seeing if we could fly. All of the sudden we see that same police car we saw coming into town, again. Scott slows to a mild roar and we pass him in the opposite direction and Scott says, “He got me.” I said” What?” He says, “He’s turning around.” I look in my mirror and didn’t see a thing. Scott pulls over onto a dirt road and says, “He got me, he’s coming.” I looked out my window up the road, and turn to Scott and said “Dude, are you nuts? Nothing is coming.” Right as I said that I turned and looked out my window and before my eyes over the crest of what they call a hill in Ohio, is a cop car, lights and sirens going. Apparently, Ohio cops can clock your speed as they pass you…. Why didn’t I get the memo?

$109 later, ticket in hand Scott looks at me just as the cop is about to walk away. I have no idea what’s running through his head. Suddenly Scott pipes up “Ah, excuse me sir?” “Since I already have the ticket, you see, we’re in this car club, and we have this magazine, and well, it would just be hysterical if I could have my picture taken with you?”

The officer turns and looks at Scott and says “You wanna do what?” Scott replies, Ah take a picture with you.” The officer explains that he cannot do that as it is against the policy for him to pose with us, and Scott pleads once more. At this point, I have Dale’s number ready to call for bail and I’m thinking how am I going to explain an Ohio prison to my wife.

The officer chuckles at him and says, “I’ll tell you what, you can take my picture as I pull away.” As the officer gets in his car and pull away Scott jumps out and snaps a few photos. He gets back in, we laugh at how bad that could’ve actually gone and get the hell out of Ohio.

Needless to say the next time I need a part, I think I’ll just pay the shipping or maybe we’ll make another road trip out of it and see what trouble we can find again. Until next time…
