THE BOWTIE BULLETIN August 2013
Next Scheduled Meeting - Monday August 26, 2013
Greetings from our PCCC VP
Summertime is here and we all seem to be keeping a wary on the skies for
rain. I think the second weekend in July set a record for postponed events.
Many of these events have been rescheduled, so keep an eye on your email
and follow us on Facebook to see what events are happening when. One
event that was not rescheduled was “Hot Summer Nights” Pilot Mountain,
NC. Six cars from PCCC made the trip, and all received thorough washing
compliments of Mother Nature, but a fun time was had by all.
Monday, July 15th, David Smith, Tom Doherty, and I went to Hilltop Home to
present Diane VanHusen with a check for $6,000. The look of surprise on her
face (she thought the check would be $5,000) was priceless. See the picture
elsewhere in the newsletter.
Changing subjects, Ray Bader had knee replacement surgery and is
recuperating from it. I am sure he would love to hear from you.
See you out and about.

How I Met My Wife
By Don Mende
Way back in 1968 I was 22 years old working as a bush cutter on a survey team, about as low as you could get on the food chain in the surveying business. It was like my first real job after getting out of The Navy. Not hitting on a lot, partying and getting into boy trouble kind of ruled my life. I think the phrase “instant gratification” kind of summed up my existence.
My roommate and very close friend was one of those guys that could charm a snake right out of his skin and if he ever flashed those deep blue eyes of his at a young lady it was over. So hanging around him was great just catching his overflow of women.
Along comes his female counterpart, gorgeous, shapely, same captivating eyes, he has to date her. Well this is not her first time in the ring and dating the town bad boy comes with some degree of risk to your reputation so she has to have a wing man, a security blanket, a defender if need be, my wife.
The date is set with one caveat; Mr. Stud has to provide Ms. Gorgeous wing man with a date for the evening, who better than your roommate, me.
Long story short, the beautiful people union was a big flop, but I met the most wonderful woman in the world on that blind date and we got married on 1/1/1970.
When I think about the last 43 years of marriage it seems like it was just a blink, guess that’s a good thing. When I thought of a way of describing our time together the only description I could think of was that we’ve built and lived a very comfortable life together, not overly rich in monetary terms but rich in history, love, and memories.
Love me some Barbara.
INTERESTING CHEVROLET FACTS
Since 1912, Chevrolet has produced more than 200 million cars and trucks. In Europe the Chevrolet brand name is mainly used for cars that have been manufactured by General Motors in Korea. A Chevrolet is sold every 7.4 seconds. General Motors became the worlds largest automotive firm when they purchased Chevrolet in 1917. Chevy has been mentioned in more than 1,000 songs. Chevy Nova sold poorly in Mexico because the word “Nova” is close to the Spanish phrase “doesn’t go.” Chevrolet made so many of their world famous 'Small Block' V8 engines that if you laid them out end to end they would circle the earth 7.5 times. GMC, or "Jimmy," was originally produced to be the luxury version of the Chevrolet line. The LT5 engine built for the Corvette ZR-1 was built by Mercury Marine. Chevrolet’s First V8 engine was built in 1917 and was rated at 36 HP. William Durant is rumored to copy the ’bowtie’ design from wallpaper in a Paris hotel in 1913, however his wife later said that he saw the design in a Virginia illustrated newspaper.
